@RebeccaChernoff ah. you declared hipster victory on me.

That's why I didn't go the full distance of trying to take care of the multi-element issue. ;)

Q: Why do we have a link to some bizarre chat room on the main page of tex.stackexchange.com?

Andrew StaceyOn the main page of tex.stackexchange.com right now is a link to a chat room: In which the relative merits of Word and LaTeX are discussed. I don't like to see that there. I think that TeX-SX has stayed fairly civil on the relative merits of different systems: our task is to sing the prais...

Ahahahaha @badpssockpuppet
LOOK WHAT YOU DID!

@Jin hipster victory is not mutually exclusive! I declare us both hipster victors!

Jin
@RebeccaChernoff meh, i liked hipster victory 5mins ago. not anymore

You've moved on to trendy victory?

@TimStone it's not always about winning Tim. Winning is so conformist

I noticed, that was quite the transition. I somehow feel defeated inside.
@badpssockpuppet Respectable answer. Turns out the fact that the room showed up was a bug anyway, though, on account of it being frozen. Yet another chat ad issue, heh. ;)
I should have made that tag just so I could gather up fist-shaking points towards it.

@RebeccaChernoff how many sites launched officially now? and how many moar to go?

19 launched, 24 in beta

@Jin, the important thing to remember is that there's basically a month before anything else hits 90 days. (;

Plenty of time to recover with excessive amounts of bacon.

Jin
@RebeccaChernoff thanks for reminding me...
a month = 4-5 sites.

@RebeccaChernoff 90 days isn't the only criteria though...

8:45 AM
Right, but it is the first criteria considered.

@Benjol I don't think any of the sites other than the first few were launched in 90 days

Atheism is coming up for 90 days next week, but I don't see it launching any time soon (if ever TBH)

Actually, I think it's pretty close to ml, iirc I tweaked that once.

Break time for me, back is starting to hurt, heh.

10:02 AM
@Rebecca. BTW, I've worked out why I don't downvote much: there's no built in mechanism for notifying me that something I've downvoted may have got better and need my attention. I'm too lazy to favourite them all or keep a list. So only things that a irrecoverably bad tend to retain my attention - and they get flagged or close votes.

So, hrm... it seems like the team has decided on a solution for the rep from questions problem
They should've implemented this together with the new user page; a global recalc will probably be needed here

@YiJiang where?

14
A: Should we cap reputation gained from questions at +2000?

wafflesI am for this system provided there is an adjustment: Cap question rep at 500 Allow for another 500 rep more from questions per 2000 rep gained. Question rep means, all rep generated by question upvotes and accepts. Overall this change will affect less than 1000 users on Stack Overflow. ...

Jeff accepted waffle's answer, which I take to mean that the solution would be implemented soon

12:01 PM
In jeff's sede query there's rather a lot of 'big' names (but not mine, I'm surprised :)

@Benjol But that won't be the final solution
And I definitely see a few help vampires

Yeah, I know, but it's funny that he should have suggested it with himself, Jon Skeet, Lasse, etc in the original query
woops, I am in there after all :)
gonna take a hit on that query I fear :(
I could lose 1000 reps, I think
hohum
fair's fair, at this rate my meta rep is going to be overtaking my SO rep sooner than I imagined :)

Hey, are you even reading the answer? I don't think you'll hit the 500 every 2000 cap any time soon

Maybe I'm not reading it right.
looking at Jeff's query, I've got 413 upvotes on questions, so that makes 413 * 5 = nearly 2000 rep
which would mean the other 4000 are from non-questions
so I figured that would be 2 * 2000, which would get me an extra 2 * 500 reps
a bit sloppy, maybe :)
agrhgghg help, my body wants suger, and says the apple and orange I'm offering don't count :(
Of course, those calculations depend (apparently) on what order those votes came in

A: Make an application that adds two inputted numbers together

Joey AdamsHere's a short and elegant shell solution: #!/bin/sh { seq 1 "$1"; seq 1 "$2"; } | wc -l It's great for when you want to add a couple natural numbers that aren't too big. Here is a generalized version that sums all the arguments: #!/bin/sh for i in "$@" ; do seq 1 "$i" done | wc -l

^^ That's just plain evil

2:35 PM
googles bash wc

@ircmaxell I do, a little

count2 = (count2 || 0) + 1 while count1 >= 32 && count1 >>= 1

@MichaelMrozek Your highest is 18?

4:04 PM
what will count2 if the while is false from the start?

lol

@YiJiang Yep. Feel free to upvote all my answers to fix that

@MichaelMrozek That's almost as bad as me putting forth effort when I already subconsciously knew of a better solution.

@ircmaxell I am unsure. let's ask irb

4:05 PM
cool

@MichaelMrozek Ooh, I saw that this morning, but now I need to go upvote it.

Tell me, is there a way for me to exclude MSO activity from the SE profile?

@ircmaxell nil:
irb(main):001:0> count1=0
=> 0
irb(main):002:0> count2 = (count2 || 0) + 1 while count1 >= 32 && count1 >>= 1
=> nil
irb(main):003:0> count2
=> nil

that's odd

4:08 PM
makes sense to me
basically the line never runs

@YiJiang You mean you don't want people to know you aspire to be a box-office-busting movie producer?

actually, it won't be nil, it will be unchanged @ircmaxell

That's odd, since c2 is later used in bitwise addition
def encode_count(iterations)
  case iterations
    when 0..1024           then 0
    when 65011712..(1.0/0) then 255
    else
      count1 = iterations >> 6
      count2 = (count2 || 0) + 1 while count1 >= 32 && count1 >>= 1
      result = (count2 << 4) | (count1 - 16)
      result += 1 if decode_count(result) < iterations
      result
  end
end

irb(main):004:0> count2='test'
=> "test"
irb(main):005:0> count2 = (count2 || 0) + 1 while count1 >= 32 && count1 >>= 1
=> nil
irb(main):006:0> count2
=> "test"

Then again, I guess nil << 4 is still nil, which when ored with a number is that number

4:09 PM
@ircmaxell this is only if the while is false from the start

Right

count2 = (count2 || 0) + 1 while count1 >= 32 && count1 >>= 1 is the same as:
while count1 >= 32 && count1 >>= 1
  count2 = (count2 || 0) + 1

        $c2 = 0;
        while ($c1 >= 32 && ($c1 = $c1 >> 1)) {
            $c2 = $c2 * 10 + 1;
        }

This is making my brain hurt :-)

lol
I think that's the same...
(different language of course)

4:11 PM
$c2 = $c2 * 10 + 1; is the same as count2 = (count2 || 0) + 1 ??

        $c2 = 0;
        while ($c1 >= 32 && ($c1 = ($c1 >> 1))) {
            $c2++;
        }

@RadekS FYI this may be NSFW if your workplace is extremely strict.

Can anyone test me what the heck this means?
Initially, one or more hash contexts are set up as with the other S2K
   algorithms, depending on how many octets of key data are needed.
   Then the salt, followed by the passphrase data is repeatedly hashed
   until the number of octets specified by the octet count has been
   hashed. The one exception is that if the octet count is less than
   the size of the salt plus passphrase, the full salt plus passphrase
   will be hashed even though that is greater than the octet count.

   After the hashing is done the data is unloaded from the hash

@PopularDemand Oh yeah, I forgot that flag existed.

@Moshe "Anyone know what folder MySQL puts the database files in?"
VtC: S&A

Okay, this isn't a programming question. I'm asking for another reason.

Ok but you gave zero details
a) you do realize that an individual service is part of a program, which gets installed, right?
b) is the service currently installed or you need it to be?
c) what exactly is it you're trying to do here?

Read: There is no magical services directory

d) goto the properties of the service in "services.msc" (pro-tip: <win><r>) and find the service location there

4:57 PM
I'm trying to disable an admin control service.

@TimStone That's a shame. I could use some magical services.

Since ASP.NET is nonproprietary and all that ... and since just about everyone should have that on a production IIS server so it's not hard to find
HOWEVER PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS NOT A MAGICAL SERVICES INSTALL DIRECTORY, THIS IS THE INSTALL DIRECTORY FOR THIS PARTICULAR EXPLICTLY LISTED ONE GIVEN SERVICE.

@PopularDemand I started with a comment about Jon Skeet's Tony the Pony sockpuppet, but since that started to spiral off into a dangerous direction, I'll just respond with the typical: Unicorns!

@TimStone oh damn, I would've liked to go down a mad spiral this AM

@TimStone Then I believe that I have no choice but to say "Waffles!"

@HoLyVieR it's usually done every 3-6 hours depending I think on expected load for the scheduler. Badges are rewards not rights, so just be happy when you get them

@drachenstern Ya, I know it's just that I find it to be wierd that it wasn't awarded yet.

Q: Flag weight deputy badge bug?

middaparkaI've been on "flag weight 500 (max)" on main for a while (probably the best part of a day, if not longer), but I've not been awarded the Deputy badge. I'm I missing something or is this a bug?

Q: Seriously, is there a Microsoft--English dictionary?

artistoexIt seems Microsoft badly tries to coin terms even if there are already widely used and well-accepted ones around. (Example: Mastered Format for ISO and much of its network terminology) Unfortunately, they're often between you and the solution to your problem. So often, it seems quite possible ...

am I being dumb that I have a flag weight of 250 and I don't consider it a problem?

@drachenstern It's actually good
You are flagging more stuff that needs to be flagged than stuff that doesn't need.

But I'm not at 500 obviously
Ok, networks about to go down, time for lunch

Well to reach 500 you just need to flag more
Eventually you'll reach it for sure, if you're flagging properly.

@ircmaxell interesting
/*
 * And now, just to make sure things don't run too fast..
 * On a 60 Mhz Pentium this takes 34 msec, so you would
 * need 30 seconds to build a 1000 entry dictionary...

I really can't understand if there's sarcasm there or not
I'd have to blame the comment to see whether it was written in 1997 or not.

Yeah
I just finished a PHP implementation of that
Up to 54 classes/interfaces in the library so far
make that 61 (I lied)

Anyone want free SO rep for an easy SVN question?

SVN Update
Do I win??

@mootinator It's not that easy... close, though.

Q: What does it mean when SVN indents a status code by one extra space?

Lord TorgamusI just did a plain old SVN update through Subclipse, and this came up in my SVN console: update C:/project/ -r HEAD --force U C:/project/.project D C:/project/mroozek U C:/project/timeStone U C:/project/barchern U C:/project/lorem.java A C:/project/ipsum.java...

As I said in a comment, I figured the answer out while writing the question, but I'm not going to answer for a little while so that someone else can benefit.

Ah.
I have a guess but I don't know, so I'll leave it.

@mootinator Someone posted the right answer.

@PopularDemand Yay I guessed correctly.
has earned 25 self-esteem reps, and now has Autonomy and 2500 other privileges in SelfOverflow as a result.

7:57 PM
@mootinator SelfOverflow? Oh god, are you bleeding? Is it bad?

@PopularDemand Yes, and yes. But it hurts so good.

@mootinator Well. That'll teach me to ask questions.
