9:03 PM
night :)

Anyone know what CSS I'd use for a "lightbox" overlay?

@Moshe which lightbox are you using?

I'm not sure that height: 100%, width: 100%; will work across all modern browsers.
@drachenstern - I'm trying to write my own.

Or are you going to do the work yourself and forsake using any sort of library that's already been written and debugged?
Why am I not surprised?

@drachenstern - Yes, so I can learn and so I have a lightweight lightbox.

9:14 PM
My suggestion is to learn the way I learn: read someone else's code.

Ok

Then you have a tool that works and you know how they did it and you don't waste time.
I appreciate wanting to learn, but there's a tradeoff

All the lightboxes I've seen require extra HTML.

@Moshe yeah, that's pretty well the name of the game.

Since I just need to display several images, why go through extra HTML and a whole library for a single lightbox?

9:16 PM
When you decide you want to rent an apartment, are you going to
1. learn local zoning laws
2. become a building inspector and inspect an apartment building
3. become a general contractor and build an apartment building
4. become a mechanical engineer and design an oven, an A/C, a garbage disposal
5. become a structural engineer and design a staircase and a hurricane/tornado proof building
6. become a concrete engineer and pour a foundation.

No.

Or will you simply decide to spend $xxx a month and find somewhere close to the office?

@drachenstern Hopefully not in that order, anyway

@MichaelMrozek presumably not. But he does seem to design his apps in that order, so I wonder...
@Moshe remember that as much as we give you shit, we are on your side and we do like you, but sometimes you ask some really silly questions. "how do I make a lightbox" when reading the source for one will do just fine. There's no rule against reverse engineering to understand something. I do it all the time. But you notice me and Tim and Rebecca and Josh and Michael (^3?) all seem to have the same advice to you regularly: google it, think about it, stop before asking.

@drachenstern - You only see the negative here, sheesh. If I knew the answer, I wouldn't ask here. Although honestly, SE has become somewhat of a crutch.
@drachenstern True, I need to shut up and code, only asking questions once I'm done researching.

9:20 PM
@Moshe that's exactly it. We don't rely on SE as our crutches. We all recognize that you're young, and we all were just as curious when we were your age, but we didn't have SE to go run to and ask questions of.

Okay, that said, I'm going to be back soon. Got to write some code.

This is the first result if I google for css lightbox overlay

@drachenstern Cubing Michael Mrozek is a truly horrifying thought.
Unless you mean actually stuffing him into a cube, in which case I'd need more information (dimensions, number of air holes, &c.)
2

lmao

@PopularDemand hehe

9:22 PM
I rather meant @Michael Mrozek and @Michael Meyers and whoever else on here is a @Michael that we keep pinging. (done intentionally, yes)

@Michael ducks

brb, gotta go talk to the boss and get something for the wife <grumble />

@drachenstern beat me to it.
Gotta code this.
Thanks @RebeccaChernoff.

@drachenstern Yeah, Mrozek and Myers are the main two. Petrotta shows up occasionally. Pryor, once in a blue moon. I think we may have even seen Stum and Kniskern once or twice.

@PopularDemand We may need a bigger box.
2

9:30 PM
Just realised I've got a palindromic rep on SO (35053)
3

Not for long

@PopularDemand why do I always want to stick a second e in there?
@ChrisF nice

@drachenstern Iunno.

Looking for downvote love stackoverflow.com/questions/5225478/…
@PopularDemand How do you post a question/comment?

@PopularDemand rather appended to the commentary than to the author, but I wish I knew too ;)
@Richardakacyberkiwi why downvote love? Why not just flag? Is it your post? Are you trying to get a badge? I would revisit your consideration there.

9:40 PM
@Richardakacyberkiwi I don't understand what you're asking me.

@drachenstern Eh, wrong answers get down votes, not flags. :P
@PopularDemand He wants to know how to onebox the link, I believe.

I hadn't actually read the link yet. Was just curious.

@Richardakacyberkiwi it's automatic if you post a link to any non-deleted SO question or answer.

@PopularDemand you mean the link and nothing else?

You can't have any other text in the message though, except -- optionally -- a reference to the message to which it is a reply.

9:41 PM
Also 122k users tend to be right more often than wrong (altho I've noticed that particular username being wrong more often than not, so I'm not entirely surprised)
@PopularDemand say "except for a reference to the message in which it is to reply"

@drachenstern Gone now ;)

@ChrisF >.>
You should know better than to post something like that on the meta tavern of course

@drachenstern at least it went in the right direction ;)

@ChrisF true

He deleted his answer.

9:43 PM
I thought closed questions were supposed to prevent further answers? I seem to be able to add answers to closed questions recently..

A: Provide feedback that a question was migrated while posting an answer

Jeff Atwoodedit: we DO provide feedback on migrations to people answering via topbar notification The unsubmitted answer would still be saved as a draft, since we auto-save drafts for questions and answers every 45 seconds. However, I'm not 100% sure the draft would be visible when you came back to that...

@Richardakacyberkiwi If you were in the process of adding an answer then there is a grace period during which your answer will be posted

@ChrisF Is there a good reason, given it will likely be merged and therefore null and voided? Just musing... rhetorical

@Richardakacyberkiwi Well according to your browser the question is open and accepting answers. I suspect it's an edge case that's not worth fixing for the number of times it happens - though with the volume of traffic on SO it happens quite often.

I would personally prefer you to remain vigilant and commit ritual seppuku if you find yourself doing it too often.
On Meta.
does anybody here support digitalblasphemy?

9:53 PM
What's that then? (clearly the answer is "no" in my case ;))

@drachenstern: THANKS walks away grumbling
and @Moshe too.

hahahahah I knew there was a third ;)
@MichaelPetrotta my thanks

@MichaelPetrotta I apologize. If you care, you've just pulled me away from coding so justice has been served.

@Moshe: yep, I'm happy now. But, unbeknownst to you, I've given you an unconscious great idea for your next game

I wasn't writing code at any rate (contemplating my next three projects simultaneously while wondering why my office is so brightly lit and downloading digitalblasphemy freebies) so ... there you go. ;)
@MichaelPetrotta will it involve (null)?

9:57 PM
@MichaelPetrotta What would that be?

Does anyone know of a post where a user awarded himself the bounty?

null is always involved. You just can't get rid of it

@PopularDemand No, but it would be ironic if it were a post about being able to award oneself a bounty.
@MichaelPetrotta /blame null

@Moshe: if I told you, it wouldn't be unbeknownst.

@drachenstern - I took a glance at the code while I was in Dunkin Donuts earlier, couldn't find the bug. I'll look again later.

9:58 PM
@Moshe while you were in dunkin donuts?
@PopularDemand I didn't think that could be done.

@drachenstern yes, revised

@Moshe but you saw the SS of course?

@MichaelPetrotta But it would still be an idea.
@drachenstern Yea.

laziness always a good idea
2

@drachenstern It can. It's used when someone meets the requirements for auto-award but the bounty offerer doesn't want that answer to get any of the bounty rep. The offerer doesn't get the rep back, of course.

9:59 PM
back to work (well, a meeting, anyway)

@MichaelPetrotta But that idea... :-)

@Moshe no, meetings will not a fun game make.

@drachenstern Meeting Dash: Game of the Year edition - Help Flo keep the conference room in order while spoiled execs trash the place.

@Moshe what's up with this "game of the year" baloney?

@PopularDemand Isn't that against at least 10 rules of the universe? The community says "aye" and the bounty offerer wants to stiff him/her?

10:01 PM
Also, I think the group behind "Diner Dash" and a thousand other games with that sort of title would take offense to your use of that title

@drachenstern Er, @mootinator started it.

@Moshe well I'll help end it ;)

@drachenstern shrugs

sometimes I hate InnoDB

Why?
waits for files to upload to server

10:09 PM
soooo slow for certain operations. And it's just plain a pita for large datasets
> localhost:1482 npi 1212 Query ALTER TABLE individual_to_taxonomy DROP INDEX taxonomy_id, ADD INDEX taxonomy_id (taxonomy_id,individual_id)
I mean the table itself is only 600 mb with 2,761,530 rows...

@Moshe Say what?
is starting to get cranky at people.

A: Can Dance Dance Revolution type games assist with weight loss?

JasCavDDR is excellent for weight loss - as long as you apply the OTHER aspects of losing weight. For example, don't play DDR for two hours and then go and down a gallon of ice cream, or a bag of Doritos, or a Mountain Dew. You have to balance both your workout routine AS WELL AS your diet. There are ...

Better step away from that :/

You and your private betas. :P

That's still private? Eh..

Until tomorrow I think.

Oh, I thought I read 1 day left a couple of days ago, and assumed it had opened by now. Sorry.

10:16 PM
@mootinator You added "Game of the Year edition" to Tavern vernacular.

@Moshe I will neither confirm nor deny this rumor.

@ircmaxell if only there were a SE site that catered to dba's and offered some help in return for posting a really interesting question (where really interesting were defined as more than "it's slow, why?")

@mootinator Well, I'll just check back in a few hours. :P

Fitness & Nutritionfitness.stackexchange.com

Beta Q&A site for physical fitness professionals, athletes, trainers, and those providing health-related needs. Topics include exercise and training, nutrition and diets, wellness, and activities related to strength, endurance, agility, and cardiovascular fitness.

Currently in private beta.

Looks like a non-starter given current stats and <1 day to go

@TimStone I would make it 20
> public beta start in 20 hours

10:17 PM
Oh, 20 hours? Hmm.

@drachenstern Seriously. If only, maybe I could be done already!

@Richardakacyberkiwi It's really closer to 84 days.

Oh, and I found out today why one of my VMs was acting REALLY slow

@mootinator Is that how long the public beta lasts? (I should read meta/faq/something)

It does seem a bit silly that those stats are even shown for sites in private beta, hrm..

10:19 PM
@Richardakacyberkiwi Or longer. Really helpful post about that appeared on Writers.

Q: What happens now?

Ralph GallagherWriters.SE is passed it's 90 days in beta. So what happens now? It doesn't look like we're quite up to par yet, but we've got 2 Excellents out of 5.

turns out Windows was paging out parts of the kernel. But when it tried to page it back in, VMWare was out of memory, so it swapped it out internally. So no matter what windows did, it couldn't get itself into physical ram (although it thought it was)...

@Richardakacyberkiwi As long at it takes - at least 90 days though (except in the case of AskUbuntu)

except in the case of AskUbuntu Because that only took days?

@TimStone Suffice to say, piddling around in private betas has made me realize the value of having a core of people at least vaguely familiar with the goals of an SE site.

@mootinator indeed.

10:24 PM
@Richardakacyberkiwi It was launched early to coincide with the launch of the latest version of Ubuntu

@mootinator I can imagine so, heh. There's some rationale behind the high commitment requirements then, huh? :P

@TimStone Unfortunately ;)

@RebeccaChernoff

@jjnguy we've established that she's good. I didn't realize we had established she could read minds too

@drachenstern I was just wondering if she was here.

10:34 PM
puts back of her hand on forehead you're thinking of a cat...wearing a tutu...doing the hula hoop

Well, that certainly sounds like @jjnguy

@RebeccaChernoff Hey!!!!

@RebeccaChernoff Actually I was thinking of a hula hoop wearing a cat doing a tutu. You backwards person.

@TimStone DOes it...does it now?
@RebeccaChernoff Thanks for the consolation prize!

@jjnguy With your super-fast work internet connection, I can only assume that you get everything done at lightening speed and then have hours to think about nonsensical things like that

10:37 PM
@TimStone I'm at home now. :(
Back to mortal speeds.

And to think I was thinking of a fire. Go figure.

@jjnguy Oh, in that case, @RebeccaChernoff is just being silly. That's probably more common anyway, I should have taken that as the default option.

@TimStone Ha. Indeed. I will share my mortality with you in a sec.

@badpssockpuppet oy
@jjnguy (:

@jjnguy Ohh, shiny new SpeedTest thingadongdongs. :o

10:41 PM
@TimStone Yeah, it scared me at first.

Apparently determining your ISP speed is now a war game. Good to know.

It's kinda cool.

Yeah. :D
Hooray for consistency.

We both get A's! Yay!

\o/

10:44 PM
I'm surprised at those speeds it's only 86-87th percentile.. you would have thought the states were in the backwaters when it comes to internet speeds, given.. well, what I read about them

@drachenstern Ha. I'm pretty sure those are the top 75% for the US.

Well, I know that I could pay more to move up a few tiers, so I suppose there's enough people with faster connections to offset the...mess that is a majority of connections in the rest of the U.S.

@jjnguy me?

@drachenstern Oops, I got confused by the orange avatar.

@jjnguy the percentile is reported bottom right in the images, so 86% not 75%?

10:47 PM
@Richardakacyberkiwi Oh, it says US...now I feel stupid.

@jjnguy sa'll good

11:01 PM
This is hinky. Anyone want to weigh in while I drive home?

Q: Question awarded 0 bounty?

Tim CooperI found an answer to which it appears a bounty was awarded to, however, the value stated is 0 and does not show who awarded it. I'm guessing this is due to the bounty giver's account being removed?

What we need is a sockpuppet that we can merge into another account for purposes of testing this theory.

11:31 PM
New SpeedTest, old results:
I still get the best distance!
Take that @jjnguy @TimStone

@badpssockpuppet Ouch!

Hah :P

Why? Because you're about 50mi from the server?

Oh come on, how the hell is not showing a name in the tooltip not a bug?

11:32 PM
So that's actually just "most likely 50 miles" ... you could in fact be going a lot further than 50 miles of cables (not likely)
@TimStone the question is a support issue, not a bug in the SE2.0 software.

I just wish SE didn't have to support user deletion :|

...Except for the mentioned missing name, which is.

It's so ugly.

@TimStone how do you know that?
It could literally be a row in the db which when converted to csv has a field that resembles ,"",

Because there's...no name?

11:34 PM
data != application
you of all people can appreciate that.
I agree it's an issue, I just agree more with Jeff until we know that it was a SE2.0 fault.
I'm entitled to be wrong too ;)

Eh, I think it's the application not guarding against bad data.

SE needs more Anonymous Coward

@badpssockpuppet you deserve a +1 for that, too bad there's no metamod ;)

A star will do
...is it really necessary to delete a user's votes while you delete the user?
I mean, it doesn't delete the posts, it doesn't delete the name (unless the mod anonymizes by hand), it might as well not touch votes. :/

@EvanCarroll is it you?
Guess the 1-rep's got your tongue eh?

11:38 PM
Must be a bitch to be unable to respond huh @EvanCarroll?

@badpssockpuppet I concur. I would not.
@TheOutOfStarsException sockpuppetry!

@badpssockpuppet Well, under the assumption that the most common user deletion reason is sockpuppetry, it probably makes sense...but I'd argue that it could be an optional process.

@TimStone No, you usually merge sockpuppets afaik

What happens to their self-votes then?

11:39 PM
they're killed with fire

But the rest of their votes remain intact?

@TimStone Why wouldn't they?

@drachenstern needs moar jquery

Hey VS ... do me a favor and quit trying to help k thanks

11:40 PM
Let me doublecheck.

@badpssockpuppet Well, why would a deleted user's votes get deleted? :P I was just making sure. If that's the case, then I don't see any particularly good reason for it, no.

I have a merge log around.
@TimStone A deleted user's votes do get deleted, and you just linked to a support request for a bounty from a deleted user worth +0

sometimes I just want to write code, not do 50,000 other things

@drachenstern meet vi. vi, this is drachenstern

@badpssockpuppet Erm, now I'm confused.
I know a deleted user's votes get deleted.

11:43 PM
@TheOutOfStarsException bah, notepad++
since I was asked the quality of this machine.

@drachenstern That sucks

shakes head

It's flag city!

I will be so happy when this codebase becomes something that starts literally using more jQuery, like jQuery templates.

@TimStone Just flag the question, you weight whore :P
7

11:48 PM
@badpssockpuppet Bah, I'm already at 500 :P

or you risk the mods not noticing the four posts are on the same Q, thus skipping a much needed protect

@TimStone I don't know what I'm at, that means I don't flag enough, right?

@TheOutOfStarsException Yeah, heh. :p

I haven't been on stackoverflow in far too long

Also downvote those answers, they'll get deleted anyway so you'll get your reps back, but in the meantime you can let Trusted Users™ kill them with fire without mod intervention.

11:50 PM
chat takes up all my SO time :-)

@TheOutOfStarsException you and me both.

Also a new legitimate answer doesn't have to fight for visibility.

@badpssockpuppet Hmm, I hadn't considered that. The posts were spread out pretty far apart (the question is fairly old), so hopefully it's not a huge issue.

Also link us the question so we can downvote with prejudice

Someone already killed all of them :P

11:51 PM
:p next time read my mind and be faster ;)

I mean, if the mod clicks through one of the links he'll probably see the situation and also protect, but you don't need to click through the flag to delete the post.
...and deleting the post from the question page doesn't automatically dismiss flags as valid, while deleting the post from the mod flags page does (which makes the process slightly less annoying).

@badpssockpuppet Yeah, you're right. Without knowing what the tools look like, it's hard to appreciate how things look from the other side. I'll keep that in mind for next time.

@badpssockpuppet speaking of mod tools, is there another chat-cast this week?
@TimStone I wonder if the SOIS team would mind you seeing the visual cues in the form of an offline screenshot.

@TimStone You get the title, the first few lines, a small user card, the list of flags (mod flags aren't anonymous, the rest is) and a list of actions moderators took on the user/post

Ah, alright.

11:54 PM
#mysqlfail! A REPAIR operation is non-blocking for reads... That could get ugly quickly...

ranging from "question viewed by: <list of mod avatars>" to "Added comment" to "User suspended"

@drachenstern Well, it's not terribly important so long as I have an idea of what the best way to approach the situation is.
Actually, didn't Benjol write a question to address this in some part?
pokes Gravatar

@TimStone Ivo posted screenshots here: chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/230

Yeah it's not like its anything impressive.

@drachenstern Wait until your analytics graph starts getting enough data. That thing can get unreadable fast.

11:59 PM
@badpssockpuppet that may be so. I don't see it happening on dba.SE
I also look forward to being proven wrong ;)
