that's why it looks good now

@NickCraver Oh, you're inheriting from #hlinks a

correct
what are you seeing as an error in firefox 4?
it behaves correctly, using firebug to view?

When you hover over the link, an error is generated

the popup shows or no?

I believe the correct behavior is that the popup should appear on hover
It does not anymore, the triangle still works though

@NickCraver If I visit a SE site – say, 10 days in a row, but I'm not active (I only visit it once), does these days count as consecutive?

might be an addon

So, eh, it just happened to fell into a situation that I happen to prefer to the current one ;)

i just installed 4.0 RC1, no errors shows on hover

@NickCraver I'll have a look
--safe-mode dum dee dum...

yeah let me know, it'll come up on meta for sure
@Nyuszika7H I'm not 100% sure, never looked at the code, to be safe just vote at least once though....there is a meta on that somewhere

1:06 PM
Nope, same error in safe mode
Error: u.hasClass is not a function

@YiJiang you're on the 4.0 RC?

@NickCraver Firefox 4.0 RC on Ubuntu, yes. It's called 'Mozilla Developer Preview' for some reason

installing on ubuntu, hold

user153011
34 days until Fanatic on SO :)

1:10 PM
LoL

there are people on SO that have visited every day
literally every day

@NickCraver really? gasp They must be crazy people
:)

you might be one of them @Pekka

@YiJiang - are you pulling from ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa?

@SMark that's impossible, because I joined only in November '09 :)
(Off to investigate why @Rebecca had to smack her head against the wall.)
I don't get it

1:14 PM
@NickCraver firefox-next

I am just guessing @Pekka

that's not the official RC is it? isn't that the nightly?

btw, I am using nightly, got same error on firebug

@NickCraver The ppa looks official, not sure if its the same 'official' RC they're offering on their site
> This PPA will contain Milestone builds of the next version of Firefox (alpha, beta, RC)
Yeah, it should be the same
@Pekka You do not need to understand the Rebecca, just let her be and star her messages

@YiJiang fair enough

1:17 PM
That reminds me, how's the Book of Rchern?

@YiJiang I think @badp and me somehow came to an unspoken agreement to drop it, because we go so many :|'s from the main character
We are sensitive guys. Frowns affect us
2

@Pekka Yeah, when @Zypher asked where to find it I refrained from linking him to it
Mainly, though, it's the laziness in the refactoring required to put Webapps into the story

@badpssockpuppet yeah, me too. However, it can still be found on Google I think
Ah no, it can't, not directly at least

@Pekka Starred list
or just search the room for "piratepad"

@badpssockpuppet yeah, that'll work!

1:24 PM
@YiJiang - I get an error on the nightly but not the official...same on windows
definitely their bug

@NickCraver Okay

sorry...can't explain why their selector engine isn't finding that, something wacky

It's the nightly build, things break all the time, which is why I switched to using the milestone builds instead, not sure why its breaking for me on the milestone build too though

the linux builds are always wacky as well, there have historically been issues with only firefox in linux, same versions as windows

@NickCraver Eh, with only Firefox in Linux? Or do you mean with Firefox only in Linux?

1:32 PM
I think he means only in the Linux version of Firefox

@badpssockpuppet correct
the guitars site had an issue with performance with a jquery guitar tabs plugin, performance was lagging up to 2 seconds but only in the linux builds
mac/windows were fine, 0 delay

user153011
Hi again! :)

Unrelatedly, there's an error with the panda page

Shouldn't you post "Eeeeek! What happened to my Panda?"? :P

1:53 PM
@NickCraver Is the repeated tabs on top and bottom tab lists a bug? I'd like to think it is

@NickCraver The fact that 'reputation' and 'favourites' tab is repeated in the top and bottom tab section on other user's profile page
So should this be downvoted 2 posts or the user himself was downvoted once?

should say 2 times on there
will add that
@YiJiang I still don't follow this, screenshot?
I see favorites up top, rep on the info page

Rep third on the top, second on the bottom, fav fourth on top, third on bottom

ahhh it's different for moderators
yes that's a bug, looking
will be fixed next build

Q: What does Computer Hardware add that isn't already available on Super User?

Ivo FlipseProposal: Computer Hardware When I was browsing the proposed questions, I noticed that a lot of questions would be perfectly fine for Super User and the others are shopping recommendations, which goes against the FAQ of any Stack Exchange site as far as I know. If this proposal is mainly focusi...

@YiJiang can you send me a url?
rollups don't happen in that case currently, though they will

@NickCraver Hmmm? The user I captured there?

2:05 PM
yeah

Hang on, the internet is a lot slower than usual today, might have something to do with the earthquake in Japan

2 cables cut with that one

@Nyuszika7H:

SuperUser is about general computer related questions. It doesn't have as much activity in the hardware tag as I would expect. Two reasons I think: first, people don't know that this would be a good place to ask questions that are too hardware specific and second, the experts don't frequent the site as often. I am not sure about this but I feel that most of the people there are the ones who are programmers (frequent SO) and come over to SU to answer.

2:07 PM
Hmmm... Just noticed Firefox 4's native client side validation

ok that was a display error, that user's post was downvoted, not the other way around
fixed for next build as well

hey.. has rep graph has been removed from profile page?

i asked it on meta but not sure its a bug or its really been removed... any one know of details?

@Shekhar_Pro the new one is much better

@YiJiang That's a received downvote I think

@badpssockpuppet Yeah, Nick said so himself

How can I help you?

Repro on SF, SU, not SO, not SE

I can't

I got Server Error in '/' Application. on www. SU SF too

4:09 PM
@badpssockpuppet not sure

Oo.. hang on, repro'd for SupoerUser

And not any more. Is it a transient bug? I can't reliably repro this

I haven't been able to repro it even once
I get 301 DROP THE WWW as expected

user153011
@balpha lol

4:12 PM
I got 500 Internal Server Error with wget, btw

It's a transient bug. Around 50% of the time it would work, then 50% of the time I would get 'Something Bad Happened' and even one YSOD

@SMark yes, exactly
@YiJiang No, I never get a formatted error page
Always the stock MS one

I tried wget, worked fine as well

@YiJiang still got one of the lolcats open?

4:14 PM
There, I can confirm its a transient bug with wget too - one request worked flawlessly and another ended with a 500 error

that said, I'm using OpenDNS

@balpha I have one still open, yes

4:15 PM
SuperUser.com at 64.34.119.12

the YSOD page doesn't help much, but the lolcat page has the actual error as a HTML comment
what does it say?

<!-- Actual error:
No site found with BaseHostAddress=www.superuser.com-->
Hehe, nice way of concealing the error, hmmm...

user153011
No repro in Chrome 11 dev and Firefox 4 latest nightly.

there is ping lost on lots of place to www.superuser.com

okay thanks @YiJiang, that helps. so the www removal sometimes fails. probably means a misconfigured webserver

4:21 PM
@SMark Interesting website

may be dns are not sync?

user153011
> www.superuser.com returned a 500 Internal Server Error. The server failed to fulfill an apparently valid request.

4:23 PM
@SMark Well actually, given that it's reporting 50-100% packet loss for stackoverflow.com, I won't count on it

@YiJiang, looks like server problem on that site now

user153011
> It's not just you! 404.stackexchange.com looks down from here.

it was working properly before

@SMark no, the request reaches the serve fine -- but the "www." is supposed to be automatically removed before it reaches the app
which seems to be not happening somewhere
the sysadmins have been ordered to fix :)

4:24 PM
@balpha, I was wondering like that before but, you and nyuszika7 can access it, so I am confused :D

Well, if it's just wrong on one of the servers, it depends on where haproxy sends you, I guess.
the extent of my knowledge on network -- let alone IIS -- configuration is "if you pull the cable, it won't work"

user153011

ah, haproxy hash source ip and map to seperate server?

Q: Automatic Firefox Home Page Selection

PrashantGuptaSo there are 2 web sites: http://homesytem.lan/ and http://www.google.com Now, I want my browser to go to [1] and if [1] is not available then go to [2]. Another way to look at this is, if I am on home network I want to go to [1] else to [2]. The browser is Firefox. How can this be done?

"We currently use IP-hash based routing to determine which server visitors to stackoverflow.com end up on"
Posted by Jeff Atwood on January 14th, 2010

I think we’ve finally arrived at a semi-stable network layout for running Stack Overflow and the rest of the trilogy.

Here’s a diagram of our current network layout:

The most recent changes were all in the name of redundancy:

The last part is in reference to an unfortunate recent switch outage at PEAK, our datacenter provider. It was handled swiftly, but now there is no longer a single point of failure upstream of us at PEAK — we’re being served by two different switches on two different internet connections. Kudos to PEAK for not only handling this rapidly at the time, but also more permanently fixing it in a way that makes it less likely to happen next time. …

make sense now

A: www.superuser.com down, superuser.com not down

ZypherWe had an IIS server in the pool that wasn't re-directing correctly. I've recycled the server and it is redirecting correctly now. I'm looking into how we can prevent this in the future.

There we go

now the panda back too

user153011
> Yep! We can access www.superuser.com.

@NickCraver I can feel another Eeeek coming your way. "OMG people can now deduce whom I downvoted (much more easily)". Yes, there is no time stamp, but the downvotes are still sorted in chronologically with the rest. And yes, there is no link to the question on which the downvote happened, but that doesn't help much. If I have a strong suspicion who might have downvoted me (I usually do), I just go to their reputation tab and bam! it's there.

@RegDwight that's changed in the code already so that (unless you're on your own profile) the downvotes are rolled up
i.e. all you see is "they downvoted something on day X"

4:43 PM
@balpha Is that deployed? That's not what I'm seeing.
I am looking at someone else's page right now.

no, not yet. that's what I meant by "in the code".

Okay, thanks. Looking forward to the deployment. Cheers.

Q: Cycling between element above and below current array element

Yi JiangThe title sucks, but it's really very simple - given an array and a starting element, cycle between one element above, below, then two element above, and below the starting element. For example: Start: 5 5 > 6 > 4 > 7 > 3 > 8 > 2 ... It doesn't matter if the code initially ...

@balpha It's not like my code is extremely ugly, I'd just keep thinking that there's a clean mathematical solution, and indeed we do! (erhm... right? I'm not entirely sure how that would work)

-1^i alternates between plus and minus, and the i*LENGTH part is just to circumvent the fact that JS's % preserves sign
actually, it has to be Math.ceil, not floor

Q: Allow prepopulating the tags field when linking to the Ask Question page

badp's sockpuppetOn Gaming, we would like to use game-specific and genre-specific tags. As such, it would be helpful to have links to the Ask question page which have the tag field prepopulated. For example, one could post the following link on the Braid forums: http://gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/ask?...

(short answer: what Tim said)

Though it can be easily implemented with an userscript.

or, I suppose, just typing the text directly into the box.

It’s been a while since we’ve done something arbitrary, complicated, and confusing, so today I’m happy to announce that the name of the company has been changed, effective immediately, to Stack Exchange Inc!

There’s a method behind this madness, of course: we want to emphasize the importance of the 45 sites in our network, which has long since stopped being about programmers:

That, plus, whenever we told The New York Times that we were “Stack Overflow,” they would go to stackoverflow.com and have a heart attack. At least this way people wondering about the company understand that we’re about more than just programmer questions. We have Battlestar Galactica too! …

user153011
So it was Stack Overflow Inc. before?

I think it was technically Stack Overflow Internet Services, but it sounds like they just went by Stack Overflow most of the time

user153011
Ah, right, SOIS…

> Thirdly, although the recent comments feature of the envelope is duplicated by the Stack Exchange popup on the left hand side of the toolbar, the envelope was always significantly quicker at reporting new comments
I'm pretty sure that's absolutely never been the case for me.
Am I just crazy, or? :P

@TimStone your totally right
its the other way round for me
the MegaCollider is instant

Ah good, so I wasn't imagining things.

People are mixing up 2 things with this though.
The envelope itself as a notification service was useless basically.
The page it linked to though...
(;

You've confused me. :P

8:12 PM
I think all the envelope complaining is ridiculous, but killing the envelope without providing an alternate link to /users/recent wasn't the best move

Well, it seems silly to link to a page you're removing, but I guess making it less accessible until you did, but still linked, would have placated some people.

Right, it was the content on /users/recent, but that's really a separate thing from the envelope icon. At least the way I think about it shrugs

I thought you were trying to imply that the page was an effective notification service, which seems silly since you'd have to refresh the page to constantly to know things changed anyway, but I get the feeling you really had two separate thoughts and I joined them by accident, heheh.
I am curious what's on that page that isn't in your profile now, though.

I see I missed out on some ignorance by going to be early last night. lol

Oddly enough, I went to sleep early too.

Hi all, quick question: Do moderators have a "nuke tag" button? We got a new meta tag on about 10 questions, if I flag a mod can they remove them easily or should retag manually?

lol dammit. WHY DID I CLICK, WHY?
tis on the tip of my tongue >_<
@Fabian which site and is there a meta post about it?

I pinged the user in chat after I noticed it

But he didn't show

@Fabian no, mods can't do that. Need a dev, but for 10 questions it can just be done manually with some patience.

Then it's probably easier to do it by hand, it's just 10 questions.
But I still think mods should have a nuke tag button

@badp Jeff would say either "make it so" or "needs more awesome". That's all he ever says
