Hmmm... I think I missed something, must have been a netsplit

;-)

lol

"if you don't understand the appeal (and I was being sarcastic when I said they were 100% identical), this isn't for you. I want IRC to die in a fire. It's an abortion, an abomination. Just MHO of course :) "

@Warner: Was just messing with you :-)

10:01 PM
Oh, must have been lost in text.

IRC is like 4chan, really, but less useful.

shrug.

Don't much of the technical details, but I think I just longed for a next generation of IRC

You seem set in your opinion, Jeff, so there's no sense in debating. I essentially hold the opposite opinion.

Without all the netsplits

10:02 PM
Use another network

I love the ability to edit posts

haha, radius.

@Jeff, 95% of the time I would agree, but there are rare channels where you can occasionally get useful help. Getting useful help frequently seems like more of the exception then the rule though.

radius: I thought freenode was one of the good ones?
IRC offers lots of free help as long as you don't mind them calling you names while they help you :-)

10:03 PM
I like editing in the context of SF but in the context of a forum or other communication mediums, it allows people to be sloppy and unaccountable.

I'm on Undernet and I rarely see netsplit

Which are two things I love about IRC and mailing lists.
You are ultimately accountable for what you say, period. Once it's sent, it's out. There's no editing, there's no take backs.

Freenode is a relatively good network, but try and ask a complex question or high-level question in #ubuntu, or #debian... I just doesn't work

s/There's/There is

I actually like EFnet's #linux but it also examples behavior people take exception to.
Being told to RTFM can be plenty healthy.

@Warner: Quick, popquiz, what is on line 2,323 of the ps manpage ?

A joke?

From my point of view the problem with IRC is that on a too big channel, there is some chat multiplexing

Yes, my sense of humor is just that bad I guess...

sometime hard to follow

I agree, radius. I don't spend much time in places like that.

10:06 PM
@radius, and if you have too small of a channel you wait around for hours and nobody answers your question since they are all idle...

It eats up too much time.
But I will visit there to talk to some smart people with a specific goal sometimes.

@Zoredache it depends, #perl on Undernet is quite good

Regardless, I think SF serves that purpose much better.

low noise, great people, asking quite quickly

I've been raving about SF since I found it. I've not found such a medium where there's a concentration of smart professionals who know their stuff, especially about Open Source. It's great, I hope it can stand the test of time.

but, yes, you will get a faster answer on SO

I use IRC for group communication regularly, however.

it's just different, you can't exchange in the same way on SO and on IRC

Indeed.
Same as how we couldn't have this dialog on the SE sites..

yep

10:09 PM
I did like it when I got perl questions answered by Randall Schwartz :-)
#perl on freenode is pretty amazing

I met him at YAPC a couple weeks ago.
Him, Larry Wall, Damien, Matt Trout...
That's sweet, Kyle.

this isn't meant as a replacement for IRC, it's something a bit different. That's why I don't get all the "hey mannnn just use IRC and stop reinventing the wheel!" talk
I mean, we could use PHPBB and stop "reinventing the wheel" of discussion, too.. :)

@Jeff Oh god no not PHPBB

I liked your point regarding accessibility, as that was a legitimate point. Especially with the introduction of area51.

so for those who like IRC, good on you. I do not. But I'm not trying to kill it, either -- this is an alternative

10:11 PM
I always liked phorum, haha.

anyway, even before SO, SF, .. IRC was not my first place to ask question... most of the time google do the job

I'm out for the night. Good talking, people.

I rather prefer to use IRC to exchange idea

@radius, IRC == desperation for help. ;) I agree with you on that, exchanging ideas.

10:13 PM
good night Warner

I wonder if there are any plans to build chat as a separate product that can be used for a private organization? Right now we are using a Google wave as a multi-media chat between our team, but this seems to work better...

@zoredache that's unlikely, we aren't pursuing anything but public internet stuff
corporate work is a very different beast entirely

@Jeff, I didn't really think you would. I can always dream I guess. I am really liking the interface so far. It will be interesting to see how it works when it goes live and more people start using it.

10:32 PM
@Jeff this is off topic but I read somewhere that meta.so was for engine and meta.x.se was for site related meta. Why there is no meta.sf and meta.su ? I found this quite not homogeneous. For me meta.so should be related to SO only and the engine meta should be meta.se

@radius, he mentioned yesterday that there will be a meta.(sf|su) soon.

ok nice, is there anything about moving meta.so also ?
