3:32 AM
Hello everybody! I'm seeing timestamps on some messages, but not on others. Is that expected behavior?

I think the timestamps only go on if the time has progressed substantially since the last message

Ahh-- so the absence of timestamps implies that the messages were, temporally, close together. I get it.

You get a timestamp every 60 seconds regardless
If you want to see it in better action, there's a lot more people in the general chatroom (chat.meta.stackoverflow.com/rooms/16/general-chillaxing)

This is just what I need-- yet one more thing to be a sink of my time... >smile<

Yeahhh that's the general consensus!

3:39 AM
I'll have to play w/ it more tomorrow... Do I remember properly that you're in .au? You're already living in my tomorrow.

Yes
Yes I am
Living it up at 1.41pm
I can tell you that nothing much has changed, and I don't watch the lotto so I don't know what the numbers are going to be

2 hours later…
5:20 AM
Woo-hoo! 40k day!!!

1:22 PM
wow, people. =)

Yes not to crowded at the moment
I am hoping the channel helps bring more community to serverfault
Down the road that is

Could be useful. I'm concerned about the time sink. Where's the SF IRC channel?

freenode, nobody really talks in there other than Zordache and I. It is mostly just the RSS feed of new questions

ah
I'm starting to think between the actual SF, chat, and meta that there will not be enough time in the day to keep up with them all.
(New SF meta that's referred to.)

Well I am thinking meta could be for actual community issues ...
This can be time sink ... but I thought about your concern as well
Might be too many places for our community

1:33 PM
Volume will probably be less on the SF meta though. I'm actually happy about that, as it's difficult for SF to get much attention on the high volume SO meta.

Agreed. I think people might use it more if it is just SF

All I consistently watch on meta is Atwood's "recents," haha.

Not sure if you saw Robert's blog.stackoverflow.com/2010/07/… but he talks about the community taking ownership
I think SF is ready for that myself

I did, it makes sense.

I also think that the meta just for SF might help with that
Other than I have the blog which I hope might get some attention and grow the community a little bit
I'm also open to ideas on how to grow the community of course

1:37 PM
I suspect you're right. It's definitely loose right now.

Wish I was in here yesterday for when more people were here...
But my apartment building had a big fire yesterday :-/

As do I. They should return. Ouch, that's no good. Make it out unscathed?

Ya I am fine and my unit seemed to be pretty much okay. Not sure when I will be allowed back in or if I will have to move
Couple of neighbors got burned bad though
Glad I switched jobs to a more understanding company though -- just in time :-)

Are you working remotely now or did you relocate?
Congratulations on the gig, btw. I thought that was cool.
I try to make a point not to make comments like that on SF.

Working remotely. Going to go to NY to meet everyone when I can, but had to postpone my trip
Ya, well I think this might be a good place for that sort of talk

1:42 PM
Wow, that Apache2 question was instantly deleted.

Let people get to know each other a little bit.
By the owner?

I'm not sure, I had no way to tell.

Hmmm I think it must have been. Under tools there is a posts recently deleted not by owner
Oh you are 10k yet ...
Almost though!

Yea, probably within the next two weeks. I'm pretty active lately.

Whatever happened with your geographically dispersed mysql by the way?

1:55 PM
I can't get this damn "Electorate" badge to pop. I pretty much stopped voting on answers around 600 too. It's annoying, I want to vote on answers again.

lol

Still in progress, working on the project still now. We're duplicating all the the primary production application infrastructure in a new data center. I've essentially decided to write a SLA around a manual failover process, as HA is mainly a solution within the same site with our current architecture and general application type.

I never really got into the badges myself

I'm still considering some things so it's subject to change. I might write something up about it when it's done.
Nevertheless, my priority is absolutely data integrity. That severely limits the options.
I'm pretty close to that Linux badge, that's one I'm excited about. ;)
249.

Oh I was happy to get that one :-)
I was the first one
I need to work on my Windows badge now ... more the real life one :-)

2:05 PM
I've virtually eliminated Windows from my career.
I try to keep enough knowledge so as that I can hold my own though.
Around here, all Windows is used for is intranet. That's significantly outside of my career scope.

In the past for me it has always been Windows for internal stuff + email. Linux for customer facing production
But now I need to get into IIS and SQL

Nod, SO's approach surprised me.

Well I think they find .NET/C# to be a very pleasurable environment to develop on

2:42 PM
hi Evan.

Hey there. I just had one of those "Ohh-- my sound is turned up pretty loud" moments when the chat "tweedled"... :)

Nice. Hi #6.

Hey, Mark...

(User interaction note: Clearly I need to put this in a new browser window instead of on a tab... Switching between answering a question on Server Fault and the chat window by moving back 5 tabs is a loss.)

2:46 PM
Hi Everyone :-)

Oh... it's Kyle.

@Evan: Most browsers let you rearrange tabs by dragging them

haha.
1st and 2nd tab in the SF window.

Yep... using Chrome. I just broke this one off as a new window. Now I can ALT-TAB between Server Fault and chat. Bliss...

Ctrl-Tab usually shifts tabs within a browser as well

2:49 PM
@Warner - interesting viewpoint. I've mainly been a windows dev for as long as my career, so I can't compare directly - but I've never had problems with integrity on Windows. It depends on what you are doing, but dare I say (or at least, whisper) FUD?

@Kyle: That was my problem... I'm typing an answer, I hear the "tweedle" noise, and I have to CTRL-SHIFT-TAB, like, 8 times to get back to the chat window.

You can just those noises off our change the options if you want as well in the upper right if you didn't notice that

Integrity, Marc? I do not believe I questioned the integrity.

in Server Fault, by Warner
Nevertheless, my priority is absolutely data integrity. That severely limits the options.

Oh, a miscommunication on our part. Kyle and I were discussing..

2:51 PM
ah, fair enough

Architecture for highly available MySQL with automatic failover in physically diverse locations

linux mysql disaster-recovery heartbeat linux-ha

@Kyle: Oh, I want the "tweedles". I was mainly saying that having the chat as a separate window makes it easier to get back to the chat window fast when it does "tweedle", rather than flailing around swapping tabs w/ the keyboard or, gasp, reaching for the mouse.

The Windows thing is more a personal preference on my part. Best tool for the job, and all that. Fact is, I do not appreciate the types of career paths typically associated with Windows administration.

@Evan: Whatever makes you happy, just pointing out stuff in case you were not aware... not saying it is any better

@Kyle: >smile< Definitely...

3:07 PM
It really annoys me when people upvote questions like "phpmyadmin port change?". Stupid Electorate badge.

I'm not sold on question upvoting being useful, but then I'm rarely approaching the site from a "I have a question to ask" perspective (in which case question scores might be useful).

I agree. I'm not sure we want to encourage people to ask more questions without consideration.

Hey there, Zypher.

@Evan howdy
@everyone else Howdy to you too :)

Hi Zephyr!

3:16 PM
word.
I'm starting to feel like I'm tech support for "acidzombie24."

@Zephyr: Nice one on that "how does PING work" question. I got asked something like that once in a phone screen, and I asked the interviewer "So, you probably don't want me to start by explaining bit-banging on the keyboard controller, eh?"

So you've interviewed for Google too, Evan?

haha yea ... on the opposite side we had someone in on an interview once, they answered it "you type ping <site> and then it tells you if it is up or not"

@Warner: Heh heh... Wasn't who I was thinking of, but actually I did get one of those, too. :) "How many bits in a POSIX permission describe the owner's permission?" Heh heh...

3:33 PM
@Evan Wow, that's an interesting way to go about it.
@Zypher Hopefully they were entry level.

they where ... the position not so much ... but for what they where asking for salary ... well we had to at least bring them in for an hour ... ended the interview in 20 mins.

Who do you work for, Zypher?

Company Called Teleperformance not many people have heard of them

haha
They have a call center about 100' from me across the parking lot.

haha nice

3:39 PM
They have training in the same building as I am in right now.
They bought up CallTech a few years ago in Columbus, Ohio.

ohh
yea, i'm out at westbelt about 1-2x a year

Nice
Let me know next time you're around and we can grab some lunch.

@Warner: Do you ever get to any of the user group meetings, etc, around Columbus? I'm over near Dayton...

absolutly ... i have a hardware upgrade due in the fall so that is probably when i'll be out

I don't want to put my e-Mail address in here because it will be indexed, but feel free to hit me up via LinkedIn.
I was at Yet Another PERL Conference and attend LinuxFest almost every year.
COLUG isn't as active lately.
I've been to some VMWare user groups.
Overall, I attend tons of seminars, conferences, and events in the area.

3:43 PM
Neat. We'll have to meet up sometime. I missed the last LinuxFest. I do hit the Columbus VMUG now and again. I dunno if I'm gonna make next week's meeting or not, though... leaving on a trip next Wednesday and I have no doubt I'll be cramming to get work done before I leave.

Definitely! I've been bad about attending the VMWare stuff lately, I've been wanting to try to catch another VMUG meeting though.

The Cincinnati-area VMUG meets in the evenings, which usually works better for me. The Columbus VMUG being in the morning is pretty difficult to get to... I end up having to deal with traffic on the way, inevitably. For people who are in Columbus, though, the morning meeting time is probably a good deal.
So, consequently, I end up at the Cincinnati meetings more than Columbus.
Dayton isn't big enough to rate... :)

Ah, I see. I've never been to a Cincinatti meeting.
That's tough about Dayton. I've not been that in some years now. I used to drive down every year or two.

I go to both because I'm virtually equally far from both.

That makes a lot of sense. Meeting different people is half the fun of attending those type of events anyway.

3:52 PM
I really enjoy hearing about others' experiences, environments, etc. Some of the vendor product pitches get a little tiresome, but the Q&A and networking is the most fun.

I have tickets for LinuxCon in Boston so let me know if anyone is going!

Have you been before? Is it a good conference?

Nope, this is my first Computer conference
That is where I live (or at least, lived up until yesterday) so it was easy for me to go

Oh wow, monty is speaking.
I won't be able to attend this year but I'll keep it in mind for the future, looks to have a lot of potential. Let me know how you like it.

I think the last one in OR was supposed to be cool

4:09 PM
It travels?

Work calls... Phh. If it wasn't for these pesky Customers I'd have more time to play Server Fault. Talk to ya'll later...

Warner: Ya, it is the Linux Foundation Conference. I think this is the second one

4:37 PM
oh god ... horrible horrible hold music NOOOOO

hi Zoredache.

not sure I understand what the numbers mean.

Dark gray, right column-- questions answered
Light gray, left column-- votes
If you hover over the text, there's alt text.
Your overall answer to rep ratio is quite high, Zored. That's awesome.

Warner: That just means if is give two word answers "Use Nagios."
;-)

yeah, it just shows how much time I have spent when I should have been doing other things....

chuckle, Zored.
It must be cool to see people using the app you've been working on, Marc. I always loved that.

5:21 PM
if we weren't down 1 tech at work, my rep wouldn't be as flat as it was now...

Back when I ran BBSes-- same thing. That's what drove me to do what I do now.
Ouch, Zored.
The way it packs lines together requires a different approach from other communication mediums. It's easy to confuse context.

To split the context...

5:27 PM

Haha, sweet Zored.
What does being a room "owner" allow?

you can make this room a "gallery"
meaning anyone can watch
but only people you allow to can talk
and you can add RSS feeds
see the "edit" link (top right)

Ah, so making people "read write" would apply to a room set in gallery (+m, hehe) mode?

@balpha, wow, thats neat. How often are the RSS feeds pulled?

It would also be cool to have a dynamically updated SF badge on the bottom row. Watch your rep.
Between that and the RSS feeds, this could be the main dashboard.
A "flag" button to have a list of the right column of questions to watch that could be toggled would be awesome as well. Again, along the lines of a SF dashboard.

@Zypher what is the length of your desk to be able to put 5 screen ? :)

guestimate ~ 5 ft ... i cheated and put one on an swing arm that clamps to the back of the desk (the monitoring one since i just glance at it not actually need to do much on it)

Oh there is a 4th screen behind the cat in that picture if you count laptops

7:36 PM
no no ... i'd be at 6 if we where :)

Ergotron monitor mounts are awesome.

maayyybe if the laptop was open and usable
@Warner yep, my only complaint right now is the one i have isn't quite high enough and about 2 in of the bottom of the screen get clipped by the other monitors, which is ok because the red and yellow alarms are at the top :)

Does anyone think that the chat stream is going to draw content from the written content, and the Stack sites loose their effectiveness as wikis/Q&A data that persists?

No rep for chat :-)
My guess would be if it does take anything away it will just be part of the comment stream which should go into answers anyways if there is valuable stuff there

hmm .. since you need meta rep to chat how about (when it goes live) be able to get some sort of rep on the META site for chat
oh wait

Not at all. The only discussions regarding technology I'd have via this medium is with professionals.
