@RocketNikita if everyone chose the first four options, they would all show as 100%. Hope it's clear now
If you're referring to how it looks, it's probably incompatible with your zoom level + browser settings

hello everyone, is there any way to know how much our strike has taken money from stack exhnage
thank god @SonictheAnonymousHedgehog

@Starship-OnStrike Not really. The strike action has diverted some SE employees to jobs that mods normally do, like handling flags. That has an indirect cost because it delays the tasks that those employees would've been doing instead of handling flags.
The strike has caused some low quality posts to accumulate on the network. In theory, that reduces the value of the networks content, but it's hard to put a dollar value on it, and most of that stuff will get cleaned up after the strike finishes.
The network earns advertising money, which is calculated from page visits. Now maybe fewer people are visiting to ask & answer questions because of the strike, but I'd be surprised if that was significant. I guess striking mods & curators may be viewing fewer pages, but their numbers are tiny compared to the general number of visitors.
OTOH, people have been visiting the site because of the news interest of the strike: just look at meta.stackexchange.com/questions/389811/… which has 82k views. So it's possible that the strike is actually making money for SE. ;)
Of course, the real cost is the long-term effect on the general perception of the SE brand. Companies buy Teams because Stack Overflow has a good reputation. OTOH, events over the last 5 years or so have reduced that reputation for many developers, especially those who are regular SO users.
In 2018, the majority of regular SO contributors were enthusiastic about recommending SO / SE to their colleagues & friends. These days, few people have that enthusiasm, and some are even embarrassed to mention that they are regulars on SO.
In a recent MSE comment, a programming teacher mentioned that they used to recommend SO to their students, and gave lessons on how to use it properly. These days, they wouldn't dream of sending their students to SO.
@SPArcheon I've linked that Wolfram article a few times on MSO & MSE.
@SPArcheon Similarly: If it happens one time, it could be an accident. If it happens twice, it could be due to incompetence. But if it happens three times, it's enemy action.

2 hours later…
3:27 AM
@Starship-OnStrike you're really out for some blood and carnage huh

4:16 AM
@Starship-OnStrike Unless people started cancelling ad spending and teams subs? Probably none
Also the point isn't to hurt SO, its to try to nudge them in a 'better' direction in general

2 hours later…
6:07 AM
@Starship-OnStrike I suggest thanking the strikers instead.

6:46 AM
I will settle for chocolate ice cream with extra chocolate

MY BROTHER IN CHOCOLATE! HAVE YOU HEARD THE GOOD WORD OF... TRIPLE CHOCOLATE ICE CREAM?

Someone tell him chocolate isn't good for him and is a human-only thing

seems speciesist

You can use "contact us" tries to hide snort or go get roas . . . Go and present your case on meta snort snigger and let the community decide
laughs at screen hi-rep-user-ly
goes to the front page to see crap and calm down

(seriously though, the only reason you wouldn't get triple chocolate ice cream was... the same company has a brilliant peanut flavoured ice cream)
doggo got white rose (yeah, fannnncy ice cream :D)

6:56 AM
Here's an ice cream flavor that tastes better than when it is in any other product: Melon.
In jams, in ice cream, in everything
Flowers always cloy
I mean it's essentially honey with badly processed essential oils

@M.A.R. isn't there a famous melon growing region in your area that basically has giant guano towers?

And the sort of person that likes honey flavor I tend to avoid lest I catch diabetes
@JourneymanGeek I haven't slept the whole night and I don't even recognize my brother

Do you even have a brother?

Hmm
Interesting question
I probably do but this is from long-term memory only
While I'm happy that you've decided to re-enable the data dump, your ongoing dishonesty and gaslighting of the community you purport to preside over continues to be galling. Looking only at official statements, your CTO, Jody Bailey, posted an answer stating unambiguously that "Stack Overflow senior leadership…decided to stop the dump". Merits of that decision aside, it directly conflicts with your statement here that "Our intention was never to stop posting the data dump". Maybe you meant to add more qualifiers to that statement to avoid it being a lie? — Cody Gray - on strike 8 hours ago

@M.A.R. Blegh. Selective quoting.

7:03 AM
Also probably saying some interesting things, if I remembered who this guy was or what this whole thing was about

"While working on this strategy, we decided to stop the dump until we could put guardrails in place."

Oh yeah

All I'm concerned with right now is what 8SPT does to a rat's cardiovascular system. Which is nothing.
After the exam, I'll be concerned with sleeping
And after that the headache
And after that, I'll try to figure out who these people are and why they're dumping data

well or not

She's probably a nice woman. Has one of those Latin names

7:52 AM
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog Yes, and this smells like a fake concession thousand miles away.

@BigJoe that's not giving any rep. ;)
@RocketNikita eww survey!
@AndreasdetestsAIhype I suggest stroking the strikers instead.

@ShadowWizardStrikesBack what about striking the strokers?

@M.A.R. digestive issue, it's terrible.
The data cause a mess inside one's belly.
@M.A.R. who is?

@ShadowWizardStrikesBack please elaborate

@M.A.R. but @SPA will get mad
@OlegValteriswithUkraine depends what they stroke! If wrongly done, they deserve striking. :D

8:23 AM
This convo is making me stroke-stricken

8:38 AM
@ShadowWizardStrikesBack xD In the interest of public decency, I'll drop the rest of the combinations

8:54 AM
combining all the combinations

9:04 AM
please refer to it as "actioning the actioners" kthx

Action is out of fashion

fashion the fashionable actionably!

@ShadowWizardStrikesBack I am really tempted to reply "I'm on strike on scolding users too, go ahead"
Would it annoy just me or everyone in the room?

@SPArcheon If that includes posting fractur, I support you going on indefinate strike
@SPArcheon Yes

@balpha ah, I see you are a fan of generic parameters!

9:16 AM
@SPArcheon you the most. ;)

@OlegValteriswithUkraine Generic parameters are great! And an Action returns void, which is even better, because generic responses aren't my thing, even though they're also in fashion

9:34 AM
How can you return void? Is it like speaking without words? ;)

@JourneymanGeek FYI the video link you posted is blocked in the USA

@balpha you could delegate that to someone else! I'll see myself out

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog ... sigh
Its Russel Crowe going ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED? from gladiator

@ShadowWizardStrikesBack it's like when the abyss screams back at you

And honestly, strike or no strike, sometimes people take a little too much 'joy' in drama

9:41 AM
Yep. @Starship-OnStrike Stay constructive. No need for lists of drama. Or comments asking why you get downvoted (those are always no longer needed and deleted on sight)

@JourneymanGeek That said, I am seriously thinking of doing what I suggested him to do if he does not himself.

@Starship-OnStrike Speaking of your now-deleted question, an easy way to find answers to it would be to go to the list of questions, sort by votes, and go to the last page.

@SPArcheon no real benefit honestly
Unless you're focused on ... well drama really

meta.stackexchange.com/a/389812/369802 < that's the post for the 'current' drama. Previous drama's also had such a post. No need for a post of posts about posts, that's too meta.

9:42 AM
@JourneymanGeek who? what? where? (aka WWW ;))

I see only action, fashion, and above all balpha sitting on his throne. :P

@JourneymanGeek Having a single list of every preceding incident? I see a lot of value, especially since as I already stated in my answer on meta I think that the company follows the same exact formula (or "Canovaccio" if you prefer) every single time. I am not interested in ranking, I am indeed interested in "historical preservation"

Also, the "top 5" controversies is inherently subjective. There were dozens of controversies, ranging from minor to major in terms of causes and effects, and where one is on the scale would be a subjective determination.

@SPArcheon I think someone maintains a timeline

9:45 AM
Yes but don't go telling someone that if they come up with some kind of 'objective' measure for 'most controversial' the question can stay, because it won't.

@JourneymanGeek Any idea about Who&Where?

@ShadowWizardStrikesBack Why are you watching @balpha on the toilet?
@SPArcheon I'm running on about 3 hours sleep
MOMENT!

@JourneymanGeek looking for hidden gems.

(I did edit it because I saw the link was wrong. apologies for that)

@ShadowWizardStrikesBack there are no Gems, only cowpat landmines

9:47 AM
@JourneymanGeek who wrote it?

@JourneymanGeek Rainbow. WordArt. Title!?

@JourneymanGeek stops two years ago. Also not what I had in mind.

Well yeah it's not meant for live events, just historical archive.

@ShadowWizardStrikesBack Samuel Liew, and it's open-sourced

I'm a little upset that my resignation wasn't deemed noteworthy enough to include. But only a little 😄

@JourneymanGeek I am thinking about this but for every event. And it should be easy since I think that event specific answers already exist, all missing is something aggregating them.

@balpha Well you did come back :D

true

@JourneymanGeek That was also not noteworthy enough to include :P

10:23 AM
@balpha sorry, that's just my belly
@Tinkeringbell good ol' NLN. Though if I see that abbreviation today I'd assume it stands for "New Language Noodles" or something

Neural Language Network? :P

Whoops, bad net, sorry

@M.A.R. Is that related to alphabet soup?

@M.A.R. no worries

10:41 AM
@M.A.R. you ate too much data for lunch.
Max should be 25mb.

11:02 AM
Anyone knows Nicolas well enough to suggest him to sign the letter?
!!/coffee m0sa
hmm what to do...
@ShadowWizardStrikesBack brews a cup of espresso for @m0sa
becoming Smokey

11:53 AM
@ShadowWizardStrikesBack 👋!

@NicolasChabanovsky oh hi!! :D
Didn't even think checking here lol
So you know the open letter I guess.
19 former mod/staff already there, you can be the 20th.... :D

It is a pleasure to be 20th, done! =)
5

@NicolasChabanovsky awesome! @mousetail can you please give Nicolas his well deserved ◊? ;)
(making a shortcut here, but can't see any reason to go the long way)
@Nicolas so what's up? What have you been up to recently?
@Peter came from RU.SO but think he's pretty new, and dunno who else is active there and also here.

12:09 PM
@ShadowWizardStrikesBack Nothing! Just enjoy the life of an unemployed adult :) Last year I had to move out of Russia because of the war. I landed in Serbia but did not have time to start working on my language skills. So now I have time! I spent last month learning basic grammar of the Serbian language. :)

Help! I'm about to write a new VBS script... need someone to stop me....
@NicolasChabanovsky huh, nice! Lucky that you could escape, heard many were recruited by force to the army.
Hope you'll find a job soon. :)
Also, your profile still showing Saint Petersburg. @Nico

@ShadowWizardStrikesBack Thanks! Yes, but I am in Novi Sad, Serbia. I need to update it :)
Done =)

Nice!
So few remember to update it. ;)
(myself included!)

Thank you! Done there as well!

looking for other outdated places

12:23 PM
@NicolasChabanovsky yay! And cheers from those of us still in Petersburg :)

@OlegValteriswithUkraine still Saint? ;)

@ShadowWizardStrikesBack unless they decide to rename it again

@ShadowWizardStrikesBack still cursed if you ask me :)

@OlegValteriswithUkraine so move away as well... if you can...
Here he comes...

@ShadowWizardStrikesBack I know him. He are a former ru.SO CM and co-founder ;)
oh @Nicolas Hi there! I'm also here ;D

12:29 PM
oh my just thought of possible bug. Since there's no year in the signer join date, next year when people will join, there will be no way to know which year they joined. ;)

@ShadowWizardStrikesBack I hope the strike dosen't last till next year

@PeterKolosov yes!
@JourneymanGeek it might as well. D:

@PeterKolosov 👋!

I'm most active here. Glad to see you here, dear @Nicolas! ;)

@ShadowWizardStrikesBack can't, at least for the immediate future. Life goes more or less as usual around here, though, so it's not too bad

12:36 PM
@PeterKolosov yeah, I confirm. :D
@OlegValteriswithUkraine figures, media always blowing things way out of proportion. Glad to hear!

Most active with @rene's bots. :D
And the @ProgramFOX also

@ShadowWizardStrikesBack yeah, certainly nothing resembling a total collapse. It's just gradually getting worse day by day :)

@OlegValteriswithUkraine not really collapse, but media here painted it in such a way you think all adults in Russia were pushed by force into army. :D

@ShadowWizardStrikesBack really? Well, that's a bit far from the truth, it's more of a "how unlucky you are" situation (age, category of fitness to serve, being dumb enough to show up if you get summons for the military).

12:52 PM
Uh... doesn't not showing up entail consequences?
Or is the whole country's infrastructure just that broken that nobody can do anything?

@CodyGray-onstrike its a big country
and supposedly (citation needed) its worse in the smaller outlying areas than the big cities, and who hates you

Even big countries can have effective government apparatuses.
Especially police states... That are at war...

I'm getting my news off twitter so what Oleg or Nicolas or someone else in russia is likely a more reliable source :D

Yeah, probably! :-)

@CodyGray-onstrike This one started a war... I don't think it is that effective :P

12:55 PM
Depending on your aims, wars can be quite effective.

If you have ineffective aims, sure :P

@CodyGray-onstrike in this case... not very effective

@CodyGray-onstrike yes, it does, but better than being dead, you know ^^". There was a loophole in the system that until you personally received summons, you aren't considered avoiding service. The recently passed a law, though, that it will no longer be required: being sent one to your e-gov account will count as receiving it.

So you've immediately cancelled your e-gov account, or at least sent yourself a bunch of emails with huge attachments so the mailbox will be full and the server will bounce everything back, right?

@OlegValteriswithUkraine heh, that's more likely indeed.

12:59 PM
Failing to show up after that in three weeks will have even more severe consequences than now: one won't be able to leave the country; can' inherit, sell, or buy property (!), get loans, or become an enterpreneur.
@CodyGray-onstrike xD They also forbade deleting the account (by request only) a while ago. I am personally not that concerned, though - fit for military reserve only.

@OlegValteriswithUkraine here the army just send a Military Policeman to hunt down the deserter, and he's sent to couple of weeks in jail, then set free with no further consequences whatsoever.
Many choose this path, several weeks in prison instead of three years army service. lol

Yeah, that seems like something one would have to seriously consider.

@ShadowWizardStrikesBack well, welcome to my country where since 2023 your basic civil rights can be suspended over not wanting to die :) Or kill

@OlegValteriswithUkraine But how long until they're down to needing the reservists?

@OlegValteriswithUkraine pity!

1:03 PM
@CodyGray-onstrike who knows

@CodyGray-onstrike probably only when bigger countries will join and Russia will be the one being attacked.... aka WW3. :(

Bigger countries than Russia, eh?
I guess we're safe from WWIII after all.

most likely it's going to be a bloody drawn out conflict going for several more years.

@ShadowWizardStrikesBack as things are going... ehhh, I'm doubtful
@OlegValteriswithUkraine Its hard to tell from outside, and one can never predict the future. Someone might drop dead and their replacement might decide the war isn't worth it and blame his predecessor for example
It might end soon, it might drag on

@JourneymanGeek heh, or be even worse, we have plenty of candidates :) hopefully it won't last, but short of a black swan event happening, this is going to drag on for a quite a while

1:10 PM
@CodyGray-onstrike no lol, than Ukraine. :)
@OlegValteriswithUkraine well we have such conflict here for many years.... :/

1:35 PM
and the dupe post the company made is now deleted, along all the comments - including Jeff ones - posted on it.

It is merged, so that stuff should be on the other question?
Wasn't me, I don't know enough about how merging works.

oh, nope disregard this, it is just a merge issue. Comments are moved to chat.

heh, Catija cleaned the mess. Well, at least that's a decent attempt.
@SPArcheon and many comments are still there under the answer so not sure which they moved.
@Tinkeringbell doubt anyone knows, it's very very rare thing...

But I know @CodyGray-onstrike asked for it, so he might be happy now :)

@ShadowWizardStrikesBack @Catija probably can answer but I think they just deleted one of the two posts and moved every comment on the deleted answer to chat for retention, then posted a link on the remaining answer

1:41 PM
@SPArcheon they didn't delete any post, as far as I can see. The answer was just moved to be under different question.
Or not? Didn't notice two answers.
oh, disregard you're right, saw it in timeline now.
Such a big mess... lol

@SPArcheon good guess
Hey all - we understand the confusion about how this answer was conveyed. I've worked with Philippe to identify ways we can address your feedback and, as such, I've merged the two questions and moved the comments from one to the other so that they're all in one place. Additionally, I've clarified the statement so that it conveys what we intended as we understand that this was being interpreted as a different story from what Jody shared previously. Apologies for any confusion. — Catija ♦ 2 mins ago

For those too lazy to view timeline themselves ^

@ShadowWizardStrikesBack Short explanation: Philippe posted the same answer on two posts: the original one and the "FAQ" style announcement he made and people commented separately on both. Now the two have been merged and Catja had to delete one of the two resulting identical answers. Since she probably couldn't save the comment anyway else she moved them to chat and left a notice on the other non-deleted answer.

@Tinkeringbell well that's not the point, what's annoying most is the lack of any kind of real apology from those who did it, i.e. management.

If ever reading this looks kinda off a mess, it is because it is. Not much Catja could do.

1:47 PM
@SPArcheon she did what she could, and I respect her for that, especially this one word in her comment, starting with "A".

@ShadowWizardStrikesBack Meh. At this point, any kind of apology will be a 'mom told me to the community demanded I'd say sorry' anyways.

@SPArcheon yeah saw it, it's not really FAQ like, it's just official announcement, which is useful feature, but being abused recently to make each and any post from management be "announcement" while it's not. It's complete lack of understanding how this feature should work, part of the fact SE management is disconnected from the community and the sites they manage.

@ShadowWizardStrikesBack I doubt there is a way to migrate a comment to another answer since I fear this is the only instance that would have been useful in the whole network history. So chat was the only option she had (and I truest that she would not just delete those)

@SPArcheon the comments should have moved too I think
@ShadowWizardStrikesBack I know how it works, and its scary :D

@Tinkeringbell nah, there are ways to apologize properly. Not that it will help, but still.
@SPArcheon indeed

1:51 PM
An announcement can be posted as the question so that Feedback(tm) can be posted as answers.
The "FAQS style" I am referring to is the one commonly used for the "how this works" post where it makes sense that the question is indeed a series of questions that link to answers. Because that is not for discussion.

@ShadowWizardStrikesBack Again, meh. A proper apology is unprompted, for which it is now too late.

@JourneymanGeek does it involve a steel chair and cold water?

You can make it as fancy as you like, but it will never be able to be unprompted again.

@ShadowWizardStrikesBack Worse

@JourneymanGeek oh no. Not the thing with the eyes.... D:
or... no.... uh..... tickling torture....

1:52 PM
And that is the point: the "FAQ style" does not involve discussion, so attempting to use that for an announcement betrays the fact that you are not accepting / wanting feedback.

@SPArcheon well, still better than posting it all only in the blog.

@SPArcheon turned one answer into a comment on the other and moved the comments along with it and then deleted the comment.

See? SCARY :D
Merges are uncommon. + slightly off brand use of comment conversion

Oh. Yeah. I merged the questions first

Also, if someone complains about the supe post going away... techically, can I hit them on the head with an iron ladle? :D

1:59 PM
Practically you're striking though.

Technically hitting people over the head is striking. In a certain point of view

Practically, striking when you're striking isn't right.

@Tinkeringbell it's even left.

2:40 PM
@ShadowWizardStrikesBack Depends on where you strike. Sometimes its even wrong :D

@JourneymanGeek right can't be wrong.

3 lefts make a right
Maybe the right wrongs can make a right, or maybe a left

@JourneymanGeek nope, that would make a u-turn
oh wait
doing math

Yes right

-1 + -1 = boom
I rightfully demand right to have rights.

2:46 PM
but do you FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHT TO PARTY?

@JourneymanGeek only when @Spe is around.

p A r T y !

yay!!
oh wait the letters are drunk
PARTY - People Always Roam The Yard.

Hello Tavern! How's it going?

3:00 PM
@EleezatheOtherWorldWizard foggy

Ah, it's very sunny over here
too sunny....

I mean in the Tavern and SE in general. ;)

Actually IRL here it's pretty clear. And even not so hot, only 28 celcius. :D

All the Stack Exchange stuff going on I see
28 celsius over here would basically feel like an oven lol

3:02 PM
@EleezatheOtherWorldWizard correct. But trying to smalltalk it away, at least here. ;)
@EleezatheOtherWorldWizard well with the global warming, won't last for long... better buy AC while it's cheap... ;)
Here we got only one extreme heat wave so far this year, couple of weeks ago, three days with 40+ degrees, and most scientists claim it will get much worse.

Oven weather!
:,)

Yeah, should boil eggs instead of using gas for that! :D

The weather in the UK is so annoyingly fickle, it could be super cold one week and a heatwave the next...
For a couple years we'd get snow in March

@EleezatheOtherWorldWizard yeah, was in London last August, during one of those heat waves. :/

August is peak oven season

3:06 PM
Most clothes we brought were never used lol
Luckily hotel had air conditioner in the rooms.

Yeah, most houses here don't have AC and are designed to stay warm...

Also, I didn't think it would be so hot, so brought only three shirts, so had to recycle.
(day on, day off with each shirt aka worn each for two days ;))

At least the weather will encourage me to drink more water

@EleezatheOtherWorldWizard not to mention bus, train, etc. Real sauna. D:
@EleezatheOtherWorldWizard hopefully!

Also because of exams... exam halls get quite hot
Hydration is very much needed

3:18 PM
@EleezatheOtherWorldWizard halls? Not in the ordinary class rooms?
Also, you had time to keep drawing? And complete driving license?

@ShadowWizardStrikesBack Nope we have the big sports hall set up with exam desks and everything
@ShadowWizardStrikesBack Most stuff is on hold until after exams are over, but I'm still doing driving lessons and finding time to sketch a little

@EleezatheOtherWorldWizard huh, nice. I think? ;)
@EleezatheOtherWorldWizard good!

So glad this whole exam nonsense will be over in just a week :,D

3:36 PM
28 outside 32 inside for me

@DavidPostill good score!

@DavidPostill 23 inside, 25 outside here :(
It sucks, I don't get how that much heat got in.

@Tinkeringbell a living human being is a mobile oven. :D

@ShadowWizardStrikesBack yes. 100 watt an hour. The math still doesn't add up. Especially not since I'm ventilating once outside is cooler than inside, then the apartment should lose heat overall, which it doesn't.
For reference, a single tea light is also around 100 watt an hour and I light plenty of those in the winter, it never causes any noticeable temperature change... And that's also with doors/windows closed and mechanical ventilation off.
The math just doesn't add up

3:59 PM
@ShadowWizardStrikesBack Sargeant Nicholas Angel?
Bloody 'ell
It's too hot to exist
Someone turn off the world until it cools off

What would happen if we turned off the sun for like... 10 seconds.

@Spevacus Almost nothing - just like eclipses

Turn it off for a week?

GcL
@Spevacus If you mean turn off it's light emission, 8 minutes later there would be a 10 second period where the Sun facing side of the Earth is was dark.

> The planet's temperature would drop to about zero degrees Fahrenheit (minus 17.8 degrees Celsius) over the course of the week. That's certainly chilly, but it's not enough to freeze off the human race and other forms of life on the planet.

4:12 PM
This will be glorious.... but someone has to do this. Prepare, Tavern.
Your next t-shirt is coming....

but what of the crops

4:25 PM
@DavidPostill And if we turn it on again, how soon would it continue global warming? :P

4:36 PM
@SPArcheon raise eyebrow Rock-ly

4:54 PM
Maaaan, you open meta any time of the day and there's ripe drama for the picking. I'll have to lookout for diabetes dramaticus
Hey @Loong! How are you!
Such a long time

@M.A.R. I am fine. :-)
And you?

@Loong I'm doing great, as evident by my insipid humor. How's everything these days? You know, besides the obvious Harlan county stuff

5:07 PM
The sufficient work ensures that I don't get stupid thoughts.
We sorted out a small metal chip this week. It had almost 6 Sv/h under water. I found that a bit impressive.

@DavidPostill Sounds exciting. Let’s try it.

5:22 PM
> HE COMES.
As the original version says....
> it is supposed to look like this and don't you dare to edit it.

@Tinkeringbell quantum. :D
@M.A.R. yeah, that's his real identity!
@Spevacus worthy question for.... umm... some SE site! :D
Question is, how you ignite the sun once it's off? Maybe bring another sun, then with cables?
I read a book where the people, in some very distant future, actually move stars from place to place as needed.

5:42 PM
just sling a planet into it
we don't actually need mercury, do we?

oh, look, three votes.
someone appreciated the post.
that's enough for me

6:05 PM
@Loong Isn't that dangerous?
What does the chip do, besides killing if you stare at it too long?

We did most steps under water; that helped a lot.
But still it was better to be quick.
Total collective dose of the work was only about 0,1 mSv. So it was a good job.

Still sounds rather nerve-wracking to be honest XD

I am still not sure where that chip originally came from. I estimate the specific activity is too high for a piece of the core shroud.
So maybe it's a broken piece of the movable internals.
maybe from an instrumentation lance

Oh well. If it was a critical thing, things would've melted down by now? XD

We don't have any nuclear fuel on site anymore.

6:13 PM
Ah, apologies:P in my defense, I don't think you've ever named the place so I couldn't know? ;)

And a small amount of fuel from a commercial power reactor cannot go critical.
@Tinkeringbell Let's say it's one of the big sisters of your Borssele plant. ;-)

@Loong Hahaha okay, okay, I'm feeling dumb enough now :P how's the weather over there?
@Loong but Borssele can melt down or something, that's why my youngest brother got iodine pills from the government!

still 21 °C but cloudy now
@Tinkeringbell Sure. Borssele is still in operation; so it still has all the fuel.
So if you really manage to stop all the redundant and diverse means of cooling it, it would melt sooner or later.

Then what was the "small amount" thing about? I thought you were referencing the fuel that wasn't on your site anymore with that..
@Loong Sounds lovely. Still almost 24 here :/ and no clouds

And furthermore Borssele has passive autocalatyic recombiners and a containment filtered venting system. So it couldn't do a Fukushima-like event even in case everything fails.
@Tinkeringbell You need a certain amount of fuel and moderator in a useful configuration, to start a chain reaction with that low enrichment. We don't have the fuel for that anymore in our plant. Borssele still has it.
But anyway, for a core melt accident, the core doesn't have to be critical.

6:24 PM
That all sounds somewhat reassuring, except for that last bit XD

I would love to explain how the all the layers of safety systems work, but I guess chat is the wrong place for that. ;-)

Hahaha
I bet they all work, that's good enough for me ;)

:-)

6:53 PM
@Loong Sufficient work is always good
@Loong Even optimistic cores have meltdowns
@Loong on ELU chat I sometimes start multi-message mini-lectures and always feel bad afterwards. Though I hope they're not just feigning interest

7:10 PM
Yes, I see what you mean.

7:21 PM
@M.A.R. Oh, wasn't feigning the interest at all, but I'm severely doubting my own ability to understand a full explanation:P
(just in case that wasn't clear above XD)

Oh, I didn't doubt it.

7:49 PM
Hahaha thanks XD

A: Is there a correlation between opposing the use of AI-generated content on Stack Exchange and rating AI low in general?

SPArcheon How strong is the correlation between not liking AI on Stack Exchange, and not liking AI in general? The issue is that while Artificial "Intelligence" is a widespread term that is used for a whole range of different and often unrelated technologies there is nothing close to the common meaning of "

@SPArcheon how long did it take you to parody this? (+1)
