@JourneymanGeek Some people in our company take them as well. Some saved up enough vacation and overtime for years to take a long leave, others just take unpaid leave and call it a sabatical.

Question: since there are so many answers to questions here on meta is the best way to come up with something that won’t get closed as a duplicate. Is to find something broken with the site and then ask a question?

@JcbJoe No, it is to use other sites like you normally would... not go hunting for it.
Even then, you're likely to find things that do seem broken but were long since reported.
So always search for duplicates first.

6:59 AM
@Tinkeringbell makes sense. There is one other site that I have rep and that is photo site I have 99 rep. I don’t have any questions I can think of so I e been stuck. Also meta I have 169 meaning I have some kinda chance to reach 200 but I’m stuck here also. Any tips?

7:10 AM
@JcbJoe Stop trying to gain an increase in an imaginary internet score, and start help building a good library of questions and answers. If you don't have questions and don't have answers at the moment, there's no shame in just doing nothing for a while.

Ok. Yea all my questions are answered so I will chill. Thanks

To be fair, the entire point of reputation is to encourage participation. It just works a bit too well.

@Mithical That's news... meta.stackexchange.com/help/whats-reputation : "Reputation is entirely optional"
As far as I can tell, there's no mention there at all that reputation is there to encourage participation... just that it's there to gatekeep some forms of participation and limit the access to that to people that have shown they understand these sites.

A: Is Stack Overflow a type of game?

Jeff AtwoodThe World's Largest MMORPG: You're Playing it Right Now Not every activity can be turned into a game. And perhaps not every activity should be a game. But when it comes to community websites -- sites that get better for everyone the more users actively participate -- these are already so close t...

The point of badges and reputation is to gamify participation. And it works.

So either things have changed in the past 11 years or the help center needs an overhaul.
Heh. Quote from that answer:
> You should shape and define your community by explicitly acknowledging and embracing the game-like aspects you want to encourage, rather than pretending they don't exist.
I don't think reputation hunting is one that should be acknowledged, embraced or encouraged XD
Pretending a problem doesn't exist is just as bad though, I guess.

7:27 AM
I don't think it really needs to be stated outright in the help center. It's just that gamification is how badges and reputation work by nature of their very design and there's not really any way of avoiding it. We have "milestones" in privileges, and "achievements" in badges... and they're designed in such a way that they try to reinforce good behavior (hence badges for edits etc., rep for good posts).

Well... as for 'rep for good posts' being a reinforcer, I have stuff to say about that. If a single upvote takes 5 downvotes to undo it... it's not 'rep for good posts'.

Yeah. That's annoying.

In fact, both badges and rep seem to reinforce bad behavior more than good behavior... see the example above XD
And sockpuppets, and voting rings, and even that dude posting on Fiverr selling SO rep.

There's a reason "try" is emphasized in that message. ;)

Horrible attempt then, if you ask me XD

7:32 AM

Poor SE employee who would have to make such a post: From today on, all rep will be replaced by abilities. XD
"BuT MaH ImaGinaRY NumBAAAH!"

Or don't remove it, just nerf it and make it a number with no practical application.

@Tinkeringbell all I wanna do is get to 200 so I can get the associate bonus so that every community I like I’m not limited by restrictions. I think once I’m not considered a noob anymore then I will be fine

@JcbJoe A first post on a site will still be a first post, no matter if the account making it has 1 or 101 behind their name. Noobs will be noobs.

All I’m doing now is reading

7:40 AM
Well you can ask, answer, and edit, though I wouldn't recommend the latter again, having seen you struggle with it on MSE.

I have 134k cumulative reputation and a moderatorship on SE and am still entirely capable of putting my foot in my mouth on sites I'm not familiar with.
(134? 136? My flair and my chat profile say different things.)

@Tinkeringbell I need to improve my searching skills. Once I do that I should be golden

Because?
It seems to me you still don't get it, and are still just looking for a way to increase a number fast, instead of for a way to increase a number while being useful.

I actually have lots of questions. I just keep getting them closed or dups it’s discouraging when you search fir like an hour to get it shutdown in 4 mins

Right... but having the association bonus won't fix that.

7:46 AM
True

Remember that every site has a help center page that details their scope. As for finding duplicates before asking, try putting your draft title into Google and seeing what you find. If you don't find the question you were going to ask on that site, it's less likely to be a duplicate (although still not guaranteed).

Nice. Thanks for the info

@Mithical hey
Do you remember what brand the SO Watches were that we got?
I wanted to give mine to a coworker who will actually wear it instead of having it gather dust on my shelf (I haven't worn any watch in 2 years) and would like to find out what brand it is so I can put a call for someone who wants it on my company's blackboard

I don't remember offhand and it's not near me at the moment, sorry. I can check in about half an hour.

@Mithical I looked and the watch itself has no visible markings
I wonder who I could ask where it's from and what model it is

JNat, maybe?

I found it again decluttering my spare parts bin and it seems to be a bit too precious to just leave to gather dust in my closet for the rest of its lifespan
I'd like to give it to someone who will wear it

I lent mine to a sibling for a couple days and he somehow managed to crack the face while sleeping.

9:39 AM
Is Jnat pingable somewhere?

I tumbled twenty feet down a mountain wearing that watch and it got away unscathed, but it couldn't survive sleeping...
@magisch Usually here, but I think he might be on vacation.

ah well
a picture will have to do then
I'm in the habit of giving away things I don't use before I let them sit to rot

@magisch ^appears to be that

ah
nice

@magisch I vaguely recall its some random company that did corporate gifts...

9:49 AM
Thanks for the help

@Mithical I think your sibling misundertands the meaning of 'rough sleeping'
Also, I am amused I got to use the mod message I sent to aibobot, and sad I couldn't use it in its full glory
(I had to crop out the picture for size constraints )

10:06 AM
Lots of mod messages for science XD

@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 sounds like a recipe for baaaazzzzzzaaaad sleep

12:10 PM
stars while sleeping
But actually got to go (well not to sleep it's only 3 pm), got to make some food and prepare kids for this evening, we're going to family for the holiday dinner. ;)

May your family dinner be better than mine! :D

Well there will be this dish:
Gefilte fish (; from Yiddish: געפֿילטע פֿיש‎, "stuffed fish") is a dish made from a poached mixture of ground deboned fish, such as carp, whitefish, or pike. It is traditionally served as an appetizer by Ashkenazi Jewish households. Historically it consisted of a minced-fish forcemeat stuffed inside the intact fish skin. By the 16th century, cooks had started omitting the labor-intensive stuffing step, and the seasoned fish is most commonly formed into patties similar to quenelles or fish balls. These are popular on Shabbat and Jewish holidays such as Passover, although they may be consumed...
:P

That doesn't look too bad. Better than family, at least :D

@ShadowWizardIsVaccinatedV3 will they have this?: chewboom.com/2018/01/27/…

@Rob Well, I think I can do with a 10 dollar one just as well, probably wouldn't even notice the difference :P

Not any more ;)

@JourneymanGeek thx

Rob
3:13 PM
@Ollie You are doing that again:
If you continue there'll be no warning.

ooh ominous :D

Rob
He's not the first.
It's helpful when senior Charcoal members assist new members, ignoring the help is optional.

3:56 PM
uhhh.... someone reviewed that last SD post funny

@JourneymanGeek it feels weird to choose 'Looks OK', I shouldn't edit spam posts, so I decided to share some unhelpful feedback :P

4:21 PM
@Rob On the "senior Charcoal members": I am a Core member and blacklist manager, 2) I noticed you haven't pinged @Spevacus (or Makyen, for that matter) for doing exactly the same thing, 3) I do that to help the project. I've asked the OAP about it, and they say it's fine, depending on the chat room's rules.

Rob
@Ollie That's not true

Is there anything wrong with pointing out spam that still needs nuking?
4

I'm kinda confused over what the fuss is about too
3

Can you back that up? We could discuss this in Room 11540 where all the "senior Charcoal members" are, if you like.

I love to read monolog about Charcoal
@Ollie blacklist manager is not major thing. It's about regex. I feed up after 50k feed back

4:36 PM
@Shree shrug. Just listing what's on the Roles page.

in Charcoal HQ on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, 9 mins ago, by Makyen
@Rob We don't have a restriction to not do that. We would, however, appreciate that the user then goes to the MS report and deletes the comment on the MS report which was automatically created for them as a result of replying to the SD message.
Good points were made on both sides, I guess (for anyone doing that in here).

@Ollie Just because I was pinged: I personally don't find it that big of a deal. Cleaning them up would be nice but it's not the end of the world, or close to it, if it isn't cleaned up.
I don't always clean mine up (I just deleted the comment on the one you linked, for example) but I'll try and compromise and keep that in mind in the future.

3 mins ago, by Ollie
Good points were made on both sides, I guess (for anyone doing that in here).
I'll do that as well.
Maybe leave it at that?

Yay
Oh you were made a blacklist manager? Congrats btw!

Thanks! :D Now I won't have to wait for you to approve my watches.

@Ollie This might be a silly question, but who or what is an "OAP"?

5:12 PM
@cigien Other Awesome People.
Or person

Oh, I see. Thanks, google was not helpful with that :)

......
@Ollie in the UK it stands for "Old Age Pensioner"

Err

That's what 3 of the top 5 hits showed me. I figured that's probably not what Ollie meant, so I had to ask :)

Rob
5:16 PM
Google comes up with Old Age Pensioner - the acronyms dictionary comes up with a screenfull: acronyms.thefreedictionary.com/OAP

@JourneymanGeek I qualify ...

Eat more stroopwafels.

Likewise... ASBO...
which I didn't quite get the expansion for years

@cigien These people! (You're an other-awesome-person too!)

@Spevacus It asks for a log in, then 404s :D

5:27 PM
@JourneymanGeek ...awesome somebody online?

Anti Social Behaviour Order
Literally no one outside the UK seems to use it, and mostly in books?

Oh, right, "as-bo" :P
I don't think I've ever seen that written down, only ever heard it be said :P

@Spevacus I take it you can only see that if you're a member?

@Ollie Probably. I assume your Github user hasn't been added yet. You'll be in there when it is I imagine.
@JourneymanGeek Aww

@Spevacus is it a list of blacklist managers?

5:31 PM
@Spevacus Done.

Yayyy

;)

@EkadhSingh-ReinstateMonica Pretty much, yeah. Basically gives us some permissions for the SmokeDetector repo (like closing and reopening PRs but not merging them, adding/removing tags to issues/PRs)

Congratulations @JourneymanGeek for 12 years on the Stack Exchange network

Oh man, next year, there might be people using the site who weren't born when Journeyman started out here :P

I was 1 when JG started using this site :P

@cairdcoinheringaahing A week from now, we'll get our first set of (legal) users who were born after SO was launched to the public

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog Jeff (and the other private beta users) already have 13 Yearling badges. We very possibly have users here younger than SO's entire existence :P
@EkadhSingh-ReinstateMonica If you're 13, how do you have a Yearling badge?

@cairdcoinheringaahing SO was launched on July 31, 2008, but only people who had previously registered for the private beta could sign in.
It wasn't officially opened to the public until this month, 2008
In other words, SO as a site existed since July, but SO as a public site existed only since September
That's why SE Inc. celebrated its birthday in September 2018, rather than July 2018

7:25 PM
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog Fun fact: code golf has been part of this network since the very beginning :P

@cairdcoinheringaahing Yeah, I came across their "blog" post on their meta today. Code golf questions weren't explicitly off-topic on SO yet, but they were made so and a separate site was made for it

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog I know, I wrote that blog post :P

Well, unlike a real blog post, the top didn't indicate authorship, and I was interrupted when reading that...but yes, I should have noticed.

Code golf on SO was a surprisingly difficult topic to research tbh. I have less than 10k rep on SO, and a lot of those posts are deleted
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ We figured than an externally hosted site blog would die out fairly quickly, and there's no point adding ownership to a post on SE beyond the existing measures

8:10 PM
@cairdcoinheringaahing Yeah, not having participation on the site can result in not being able to research its history. Wikipedia ended up creating a "researcher" user group so that users interested in researching the history of the site can do so without having to go through the process of becoming an administrator

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog this may be a stupid question, but could you link to what you’re referring to?

Q: CGCC Blog Post #2: The history of PPCG and CGCC

caird coinheringaahingWe recently turned 10 years old. Unfortunately, we didn't really realise and therefore didn't really celebrate or even mark the occasion. But, it got me thinking about the history of the site, and now that the site blog is a thing, I thought I'd write up a brief (or rather, not so brief) history ...

Thank you :)
@cairdcoinheringaahing 👀

Be warned: it's a long read :P
That post is the closest I've ever come to hitting the post length limit on SE, and I know that because I did hit it :P

8:41 PM
@cairdcoinheringaahing An easy way to get around it when you hit it is to shorten all your links to relative URLs
You'll probably be able to add in an extra paragraph or two just by changing absolute links on the same site to relative links

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog I did. Arguably, I could've made the https://codegolf.stackexchange.com/u/<user-id> links into /u/<user-id> and linked to their meta profiles, but I felt like moving the unappreciated posts section into an answer was a better alternative

I remember this case:

Q: Prevent answer ban from kicking in for a single honest mistake for a new user

AJ HendersonI ran in to a very unfortunate issue recently on Video Production. We had a new user who asked a question regarding a problem they were facing. A high-reputation user asked for a full log in a comment. Since the user couldn't fit the log in the question due to the character limit, he decided to i...

Has Stack Overflow Jobs been discontinued? My /current post was edited to say this but I can't find a source

9:50 PM
@MatFergusson The jobs board is being discontinued. The Jobs section as well as Developer Story will eventually be removed from the site, no later than April 2022. — animuson ♦ Aug 26 at 17:57

@PM2Ring Thanks. I'm surprised there's no more direct announcement.
It's nothing like how they sunset documentation
It's a shame, I liked SO Jobs

I guess it wasn't announced directly on MSO (or MSE) because it doesn't directly impact the running of the network.

10:10 PM
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog reminds me of my own experience meta.stackoverflow.com/a/348029/3357935
