I feel a bit bad for suggesting to a new user to post a question, as the question is being downvoted...

4 hours later…
04:16
Should a which was implemented later as part of a general update be closed as a dupe or answered with a note that it is now ?
I thought I knew the answer but I'm doubting myself...

Q: How should duplicate questions be handled?

mbillardWhat should I do when I see a question that is a duplicate of another one? Should I answer it? Should I downvote it? Should I comment? Should I edit the question to indicate it's a duplicate? If I can, should I (vote to) close the question? What happens when I vote to close as duplicate? Or: Wh...

@Rob I was unsure if it would count as a dupe
Is asking "please implement X bit of formatting" a dupe of a post that says "We've implemented a bunch of formatting updates"?
Rob
Rob
Seems that way, more of a guess at edge cases without a link to the question. Edit the FAQ to include the necessary information to answer your question, or ask a new question.
Back in a bit.
@bobble If it's specifically mentioned there, close as dupe. If not (e.g. it ended up becoming a non-issue due to another change and your feature change isn't specifically mentioned), do the latter.
> Refinements for revealing spoilers. We now reveal this on click / tap for a more consistent experience across devices—fewer accidental reveals as well, since it’s no longer a :hover interaction. Clicking again does not hide the spoiler. We also now add a badge to the top right corner. You can see how these work on our design system documentation. It looks something like this:
does it specifically mention keeping spoilers distinct from blockquotes once clicked? Honest question, since it definitely gets close
05:13
I think the current grey background for spoiler blocks is now... permanent? Looks dupe to me.
Yeah, the announcement ammended it with "I’ve made sure to continue highlighting spoilers in gray."
but the answer was posted later? huh?
oh, countered by this answer, so, yes, it's a dupe now.
Rob
Rob
05:49
@bobble I don't see a duplicate because the issue hasn't been fixed, nor is this a duplicates. I checked all the answers in your second link, and there's no mention of it, the first link was asked long before asked Aug 25 '20 at 17:41 (the time of the second link's announcement); the first link should have been marked a dupe sooner. Now the first link is an old request, and too long after the announcement; it might be bumpable (with a
necessary edit), but that won't help it much. This is what I see using.my browser:
Notice under "Draft saved" the bold vs non-bold.
It just hit the review queue, and I reviewed it consistent with the above.

@bobble I stand corrected, MAT's link is correct; sorry it took so long to answer, in the middle of something. Changing review.
The part about the boldness still stands for Mobile FF and Chrome; left a comment.

@Tinkeringbell who did you arrest? ;)
@SmokeDetector yeah, who doesn't like Drupal Gummies...
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 Neighbours, parents, brother.... :P

Wow, seeing my message to yaakov collect 4 stars over the weekend feels strange...
You'd rather see them gone, or?
Nah it's okay. People felt the need to star it, thats fine. Just feels strange to me personally. But I can't mold the world after my own likings
Yeah, most of the times people are weird ;)
07:46
I value your weirdness. Just so I can fit in more easily ...

(I appreciate people who can apologize, it's hard to do, and I talk from experience ;))
(I don't know what you apologized for, but it doesn't really matter ;))
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 You can read the logs ;)
@Luuklag meh I'm lazy :D
Also if it was something bad you said about Collectives, he's not part of that. At least not active development, I asked him. ;)
Nah it wasn't "work" related
oh
Now I'm curious
setting bug fixing aside
ohh this. lol, can't see it as offending in any way, but still nice of you to apologize. :P
back to bug fixing
Oh hello when you arrived? @Cole

@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 Back again -- one of those mornings when I'm having to do everything in little bursts -- too much to do, not enough time.

09:11
@Shree aka lurker ;)
So what's up? @Shree
Nothing new .
V2 of lockdown (45+ days)
I was forced to stay at home.
Some projects slip through the fingers, but that's okay :D
@Shree sorry to hear.... hope you'll get back to normal life soon, and get your fingers on some nice projects. :)
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 Much appreciated while I'm having a break from wresting with some stroppy code (somebody else's stroppy code at that)
@ColeValleyGirl heh, know too well what you mean.... :O
I'm usually working in the GUW technique when having to get something done with code written by our main programmer. Guess Until (it) Works. :D
It's a branch of Trial and Error, just that it doesn't have a way to see errors, so I'm stuck with guessing different ways until something works. lol
For example, he wrote whole new framework, from scratch, to render HTML. One letter off, or in wrong place, and you get empty page.
</rant>
09:30
Oh, if that's the worst XD
Nah it's just example lol
Worst... hmm. Probably one of the production bugs?
;) That kind of guessing sucks though. I encounter it a bit once in a while too.
And before you ask "So why don't you ask him for help or to solve his bugs?" the answer is that he's always super busy with more important stuff. :D
I've been staring at a function definition all morning (no comments, of course, or meaningful names) and going: what on earth is this supposed to achieve? because as far as I can tell it adds no value. Except if I remove it, everything breaks.
Mind you, everything broken's with it in as well :)
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 Heh.
09:33
@ColeValleyGirl omg.... I've been there so many times. And more than few times, with my own code. LOL
Plus the person who wrote this did not believe in using handy-dandy well-proven library modules; they always rolled their own code to duplicate the libraries.
@ColeValleyGirl caption: SOInc looking at CMs during the mess, 2019, colorized
So it's just a completely tangled ball of string.
@ColeValleyGirl sounds like my chief programmer! D:
@ColeValleyGirl No... tangled balls of string are easier :D
(I like untangling tangled balls of string/yarn...)
09:35
@ColeValleyGirl well seriously though, sometimes fresh set of eyes can see things that just evaded you, which can be trivial... if you can share the code maybe we can help?
I guess my programmer life is easy then. Most of the code is readable, the only thing really lacking is test/build automation (and as such there are quite a few production bugs but no one gets angry if you make one)
Also what's the goal? Removing fluff from the code, in general?
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 Thanks for the offer, but this ball of string is 8000 lines long and not properly modulrised.
@Tinkeringbell yeah you're spoiled. ;)
@ColeValleyGirl ohh. ouch.
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 For once... :P
09:37
lol
Now to change the code so that school can't register players if the team was not approved. Sounds easy, but might have some pits in there, code isn't 100% my own. Wish me luck! :D
Goal is moving it from Lua 5.1 to 5.3, and adding in some missing functionality. Subsidiary goal is removing the fluff, injecting some structure and improving the UI. But I'd settle for just working in the new environment right now.
hehe, and you can't just keep it as-is?
No -- doesn't work in Lua 5.3 but 5.3 is what we now have in place. Except for the users who haven't upgraded, so it actually needs to work in 5.1 and 5.3 but that's actually not hard. Or it shouldn't be if it wasn't a complete mess in the firs tplace.
So minimum is 5.1 and 5.3 compatibility, and then the extra functionality (because the 5.3 environment will support things that the 5.1 didn't, and users who have upgraded are clamouring for stuff they've waited a long time for).
10:09
huh. And error message isn't helpful? Stack trace? @Cole
10:24
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 Stack trace, stepping through line by line, dumping variables at various points... I'll be here until Doomsday. Almost considering starting from scratch and recoding the whole thing -- if I use libraries instead of the roll-your-own approach it will be less than a third of the size, and I can re-use some fairly decent chunks of code.
@ColeValleyGirl recoding is ideal, if you have the time and stamina for that.... :)
@ColeValleyGirl Oh how often I do this with my own code
And multiple times with the same piece of code, when I find out I'm re-using an old bit instead of the current version
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 I'm honestly thinking it will be quicker -- and the end result will be better.
@ColeValleyGirl well depends what's the error/problem of course, but yeah... that makes some sense.
10:32
At least the next time I need to do some work on it, it would be well-structured and documented. Even if some of the comments are: 'And this bit is magic I don't understand' :)
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 yup
I copy pasta too much
but then again VBA propperly warns you when you use an invalid name etc.
10:43
Hi rob
@SmokeDetector k
I finally put out my extra post I had laying around, to request a better location for username autocompletion on comments: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/366928/…
Good thing to do while waiting to clear your post-vaccination wait
11:07
@Luuklag well VBA is pretty much closed programming environment, little room for mistakes... from the little I know about it.
Depends on the options you set ;)
But generally the errors are helpful enough to see where you went wrong
Like swimming in a swimming pool, vs. swimming out in the open sea. ;)
You can still drown, but less likely.
Well, things can get funny when you start calling in other applications, like browsers etc to scrape HTML for example
@Luuklag it's only 15 minutes, no?
Used it to complete WhatsApp reading backlog lol
@Luuklag ohh, yeah.
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 I filled in that I had some allergies, so the doctor extended my wait to 30 min.
11:10
That's like having a stormy day, even inside swimming pool you'll get in trouble
But yeah, usually only 15 min.
@Luuklag ouch. First dose or second?
First
Nice, will do, for now. Kudos!
Second dose in two weeks?
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 no 5

@Luuklag oh, Rob isn't the typical lurker, he can't be pulled out like the rest of them. :D
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 haha, an @-mention would also help to awaken him, but no need
@Luuklag long time. What kind of vaccine?

@Luuklag you'll risk facing his wrath, that's risky. :D

@Luuklag so I'll wait a month until I can change name again, to Shadow the Angry Wizard.

@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 Hopefully you don't need a mask anymore then

God will protect them, right ;)

true, though chat.stackoverflow.com/rooms/197438/the-meta-room looks rather quiet at the mo
Keep them safe from being infected xD
@tripleee yeah a nuke wouldn't be out of order there
@Luuklag funny but that's the case already, sort of.
@Luuklag yeah, it's extreme case of a bored troll...
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 I think I've seen one of the two already suspended once somewhere
@SmokeDetector k
@Luuklag he was trouble here, but self deleted his account, dunno if he got suspended. Probably though.
If it was new user I'd say it's even the same person, but exposing an old identity like that is dumb so probably two different people. Though something is off. meh
11:50
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 very nice picture i kike it
@Wolf thanks! blush but you can't see due to my mask ;)
@Wolf you know @Rocket?

@SmokeDetector why
Hey guys, sorry for that stupid question, but is Stack Overflow dead? I asked some questions with tags like or and I get almost no clicks and no interactions
No its not dead, quite the contrary
your question is most likely off the front page quickly, and then organic trafic is low
the good old days back (~4 years ago) I can remember that there were almost wars to answer questions as quickly as possible. wild west things haha
Also your PWA / WPA question is far too broad for SO
Yeah I know I was expecting lots of downvotes haha
But I did not even get that
12:58
And the transaction one, well yeah its an android question I guess...
true thing
that other mapping thing has also very low clicks
In the android tag you have about 2 hours of time on the frontpage, if you don't attract anyone, then you're out of luck after that basically
anyway thanks for the expected downvote :-D
at least something is still working as expected
@rekire that wasn't me ;)
the timing was so close, never mind :-D
13:02
np
I really wondering where to get help nowerdays. Reddit? I'm really running out of ideas where I could find people which are willing to share their knowlage
@rekire I've left you a comment
wohoo
@rekire Well, if I were you and it's this important you get help/knowledge from others, I wouldn't rely on anything where people share for free, and start hiring/paying :P
as for this one: stackoverflow.com/q/68157850/578411 do I really need to look at or build a github project to have a code sample we can reason about. Your question seems simple enough but it would improve a ton if answers and future visitors could match their understanding of your problem with an MCVE in your question
13:09
@Tinkeringbell those js questions are for a playground projects to learn something new with absolutely no option for me to make money with that knowledge. therefore I'm not really interested in spending money for that
@rene this question is about a library of the google architectural components, if you know that lib, no code is required out of my view. If you are not familiar the official code project is helpful... The minimal code sample would be not much smaller then that linked git repo. I see there no reason so share non working code
Not sure if that is a stupid idea of me
@rekire simple and easy-to-answer questions on SO get quick answers. That's the sad reality.
@rekire I wouldn't call it stupid but if you take lazy as an option, be my guest.
Complex questions, or questions that require actual effort to answer usually wait long time before getting answer, if any.
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 if i would raise the attention of the right people they could answer quickly. I would guess the answer would just require up to 5 lines of code
@rekire Oh well, at least there's no hurry/real need to get an answer from others then. Just keep at it, learning how to figure it out is as important as learning the answer :)
13:17
@rene got your point. But the minimal example requires about I would say 100loc
@rekire if you know who to ask and can get their attention elsewhere, no need to ask on SO, probably... ;)
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 well also true... however I guess I know one 300k rep user which might know the answer of the question, but I have no direct contact to him
While that's not so great for you, I bet he's happy no such feature exists! XD
haha that's true
a couple of years ago I met him on a congress. cool guy^^
Ah yeah, the good old times when there were still congresses.
13:21
@rekire Should have exchanged buisness cards then ;)
I was young and had none haha
@Luuklag lol
@rekire sorry but no good advice in mind. If that user is active in chat, you can take that path.
lol @Glorfindel's edit floated old crap upwards :D

Does something need to be a -3 to be deleted?
@Luuklag question, yes.
Answer can be deleted at -1
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 the circle is complete then, I encountered that post after Smokey detected this post.
13:46
@Glorfindel huh! lol

haha, I just found out my daughter is friends with the daughter of a politician
Thank you lady from the Balet school, who just puts every students first and last name in one big pdf file

Well you can now ask for some favors... ;)
Nah, he is in a party I have no connection with
And also 1 parliment member doesn't do much xD
My little daughter had in her kindergarten "class" the great granddaughter of Rabin. (One of Israel's most famous past Prime Ministers, who was assassinated.)
Rabin?
Meh I was 4 when that happened
14:05
Yitzhak Rabin (; Hebrew: יִצְחָק רַבִּין‎, IPA: [jitsˈχak ʁaˈbin] (listen); 1 March 1922 – 4 November 1995) was an Israeli politician, statesman and general. He was the fifth Prime Minister of Israel, serving two terms in office, 1974–77, and from 1992 until his assassination in 1995. Rabin was born in Jerusalem to Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe and was raised in a Labor Zionist household. He learned agriculture in school and excelled as a student. He led a 27-year career as a soldier. As a teenager he joined the Palmach, the commando force of the Yishuv. He eventually rose through its ranks...
no wonder I don't know the name
@Luuklag so you do know lol
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 Google did ;)
lol
Anyway, the granddaughter of Dalia went to same kindergarten as my own daughter. ;)

@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 Still a waste of dough.
@Ollie Feel free to post dragon, I'll edit in the closure/deletion stuff to my own answer.

@Spevacus done already.
@Tinkeringbell eaten
Rob
Rob
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 Hey, I was eating that; before you edited it and replaced the image!
@Rob fellow crabs resisted
A pizza should be a tiny bit tomato (if it can't be switched for a better base) and perhaps pineapple. The rest should be meat.
14:54
I like mushroom, olive, and salami as toppings
@Tinkeringbell meat better have its own place. ;)
@bobble mushroom maybe, depends on what else is there... olives... bleugh :P
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 I mean, pizza with meat is an excellent emergency dinner if you can't just get meat :P
Is that ham and spinach?
@Tinkeringbell Dunno... it's meat. Not sure which animal. ;)

@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 Too much leaves though :P
Ugh, I'm getting hungry :P
@rob @Spevacus would you both visit the page and share your intentions there?
@JuanM Absolutely. I considered writing something earlier but I felt that I should peruse the site more to get a deeper feeling of what I'd be getting myself into.
yes, that's a good move. ^^

@Rob are you a freelancer?
15:06
I think the team will want to see more action before any moderator appointments are made.
@JuanM This is why I'm fairly tentative in how I approached the situation. Having an outsider (for the site, not necessarily for SE as a whole) request appointment doesn't inspire much confidence. Ideally, users with at least some reputation should be trying to step up, but we wouldn't be in this situation if that was happening, would we? :(
Exactly, that's what's going on.

@rene 6 to 8 was right!
@Rob I see. I didn't know. Looks like some questions have overlap with the workplace.

@Spevacus gone.
thank ya
Nice work on the burnination stats @Spevacus. I'll try that on the next one, other duties permitting.
I just kept the list of questions that, at the time of your burninate-request's creation, had the tag, in a new window and kept that window open on my work PC. Then I could just scan through and do a rough approximation of what all happened with 'em.
I should get dangerous with SEDE and do it that way. It'd be much more efficient.
But thank you :)
