hm :D
I just threw a bounty (with aibobot) with the express desire to advertise a post :D

@Rob its ok, aibobot's rep is basically the money you fish out of the washing machine :D

Rob
Now that paper money is plasticized (maybe not in Singapore, but Australia has it; if you ever see their money) it survives the washing machine and other abuse fairly well; so that reference doesn't work everywhere - but we used to have paper money, and I've washed it. :(

I was thinking coins actually :D

Rob
We used to fish those out of the fountain with a magnet, when I was a child, a month's allowance in 5 minutes. 🌞

I just figured that you were throwing away rep so Aibobot could function at a low level again.

3:26 AM
naw
If I really needed to reach those depths again I'd just request a merge or abandon aibo and start again

Rob
But we'd sure miss him. 😢

I'd just go with the same ava and name. Getting 20 rep would be easy :D

@BabaYaga yeah, I came up with Tom as an avatar
@Mithical I see your point
Really, your finger is in my eye

the potential for confusion with avas is generally not that food a thing.

Pent-House Mouse is the inaugural Tom and Jerry short produced by Chuck Jones after being fired from Warner Bros. Cartoons, released in 1963. Production returned to Hollywood after five years (the previous 13 shorts were produced in Czechoslovakia and directed by Gene Deitch). == Plot == Tom is relaxing in a penthouse, while Jerry is struggling to look for food, being forced to tie his tail around his waist to stop his stomach growling. Suddenly Jerry sees a lunchbox at a 125-story skyscraper construction site and jumps into it, eating through to it. However, the steel beam on which the lunchbox...

Chuck Jones style is not really enjoyable TBH, but maybe second (third) best Tom and Jerry
I hate the new one. I hate it more for trying to imitate the 1940s style
It might pass as kids entertainment (which anything does) but it's definitely not Tom & Jerry

lol
I haven't given the new ducktales a chance cause of the art style
I'm really really attached to the 80s/90s style of animation

The crazy Bakshi type, or the Disney classics type?
Well I hate Disney's monotony and lack of heart now. You get good stuff like Coco, or bad stuff like Frozen 2, but they all look the same.
Hell, even Rise of Skywalker feels the same
The same half-hearted give-us-your-money production

but, bomber planes in spaaaace
and just as slow

Apparently Disney bought LEGO Batman? It probably means we're not going to have LEGO Batman anymore. At best stripped of all that edge to the humor. The whitewashed non-humor of this decade
@JohnDvorak haven't even watched it. I knew what I was gonna get and I couldn't have endured that
Probably yell at the screen all the way through the movie

10:33 AM
@M.A.R. oh, stuff like duck tales, dark wing duck, animaniacs...

but, intelligent species used as food used as lighthearted humor!

animaniacs for one is so much better as an adult.

I thought Animaniacs never reached adulthood

11:15 AM
@rene or any other sql wizards around?

sure

mag
I have a problem that I can't quite fit into words either. I have a table that has date ranges stored in a from and until column. Both are dates. The query I need to write needs to split these by day, e.g if the from and the until date are 5 days apart, the query should generate 5 result rows, one for each day, carrying over the other information from the row
something like a reverse group by

You need a support table to generate days.

mag
So I need a temporary table to do that
Wait, I could fill a temporary table with all the days until X days after and then inner join on it with a between thing to make that work, right?
Can I fit that into a view or will it have to be a SP?

if you have a big enough table you can do a select row_number() from posts for example
that will generate a resultset with numbers and then you can do a dateadd(d, rownum, convert(data,'2010-01-01')) to get dates

mag
11:24 AM
is there something like make_interval in tsql

Hey guys, first time I get to see the mod tools on MSE, is it by-design that answers and questions use different fonts to display the title of the question?

@mag no.

mag
awh. I need to generate a calendar table then

@Luuklag it is smaller I believe? still the same font.

@rene yeah the fontsize is off, which I found odd, but by looking for similarities I deducted that its a difference between Q's and A's

mag
11:32 AM
@rene what kind of sorcery is this

@Luuklag I think there is an MSE post about that
@mag it is a way to get a sequence of numbers and put them to good use ;)

mag
How big does the table need to be for this to work
e.g how many entries?

if you do a cross join not that many rows ...

@Rob Most of the disappointment is because of what could have been, not what is.

mag
I don't know if I should be thankful or afraid of your sql powers

11:35 AM
I mourn the lack of variety in the humor. Just like being too rash with comedy will offend many people, being too uptight removes all the color
@mag No need to be afraid. He's probably done all the world conquering he could
smiles at the camera

mag
posts has what, 100 million by now?
So i'll just inline a random number table with that many

@mag I have added a second way to give you a number of rows, without the need of a table at all. second resultset

Rob
@M.A.R. Are you referring to 1977 or something else?

@M.A.R. not yet:
Still some flowerless places.

@Rob I'm referring mainly to the current state of Disney productions. Disney has had two or three eras of quality decline AFAIK

11:42 AM
Decline? Why?
Just changing with the rest of the world.

@ShadowWizardWearingMask what does all that grass mean? Iran is definitely not grassy
We're two thirds desert
And Sahara seems to be doing quite well

@M.A.R. bug
Grass took over.
The flowers fight it.

@ShadowWizardWearingMask I dunno if contemporary Disney is in a state of decline. It's certainly incomparable to 1970s.
It will probably be glossed over later because thanks to some animation geniuses, you get good stuff sometimes.

mag
@rene This works perfectly, thanks

yw

mag
11:45 AM
I assume i'm just generating a sequence of numbers between 1 and however many days in the future I want
thats actually brilliant

brilliant is @rene

@mag yes, you can still use a where to limit or transpose the number in the projection, if needed.

Has a few billion years of evolution behind him

mag
@rene That's exactly what I needed to solve my problem, and I was coming up empty for 3 hours and counting
And this one is even incredibly performant. Outputting all dates of the next 3 years takes under a second

Rob
@M.A.R. @Sha - M.A.R. you are concerned about their only problem - the delay of Mulan, otherwise they're in the green (black).

11:55 AM
I would personally prefer if Mulan was delayed indefinitely.

Rob
They made a 100B last year, up from previous.

Is it going to be an intriguing (if definitely not accurate) remake of an old cartoon many people like, or just a bland cosplay with nothing more to offer than what colors dance around the screen? Considering their history, almost definitely the latter
@Rob well the company is doing alright for now but people are not going to remember Frozen 2 a decade from now.
Things like that always work out until they don't.
People get bored and move on to something else, and gaining them back becomes increasingly difficult.

Rob
@M.A.R. You know what this is:

@Rob Rob, I don't know why you think I'd need to vehemently defend my opinion on Disney's recent blandness, or why you feel compelled to prove me wrong with a straw man.
BBL lunch

Rob
You are dropping 4 zeros from your currency shortly, that graphic is the good news:
The rial (Persian: ریال ایران‎, romanized: riyâl-e Irân; sign: ï·¼ ; ISO 4217 code: IRR) is the currency of Iran. A proposal has been agreed to by the Iranian parliament to drop four zeros, by replacing the rial with a new currency called the toman, the name of a previous Iranian currency, at the rate of one toman = 10,000 rials. This change is expected to take place between 2020 and 2022. There is no official symbol for the currency but the Iranian standard ISIRI 820 defined a symbol for use on typewriters (mentioning that it is an invention of the standards committee itself) and the two Iranian...
Vehemently?, you are unable to.

12:10 PM
@M.A.R. hey! Straw woman also exist.

Anyone else observing this problem with adding tags? meta.stackexchange.com/questions/353785/…

Rob
To put it into perspective, for anyone else watching. Imagine you are fairly rich, richer than most people in North America - you have ten million dollars in your bank account. You go to the bank the next day and they tell you that you have one thousand dollars. How would you pay your rent or buy food. Why would Frozen 2 be a high point in a 100 year old company, it wasn't that good of a children's movie.
So, rather than accusing you of not making sense I'm asking you what you mean, politely. If you shouldn't be trusted with such a great responsibility there's no need to lash out, just say so politely.

@Luuklag No idea how that's happening to you, but that is a really weird bug.

@Luuklag no repro ._.
chewing noises

Omnomnomnom

12:25 PM
@Spevacus @JourneymanGeek, added some details.

@Luuklag ah, I can try on android
no macs here or FF ._.

Using 10k tools on desktop this doesn't happen. But it does happen on the ask page on desktop, and the inline on android

I'll also give it a shot on my android.

no repro on android >_>

@Rob What I mean does not have anything to do with a particular movie. I'm criticizing what I've seen from the company over a decade. I'm talking about a trend, not a single movie.

12:26 PM
Same deal, no repro. That's odd.

@M.A.R. they're big enough and corporate enough they don't need to innovate
and they have enough cash to buy over any franchise they want.

Sounds like Microsoft.

Sounds like it resolved itself by now for me.

the golden age of WB for me was when they took risks.

Except Frozen 2 demonstrates well what I'm talking about. A safe, conjured plot, safe characters, safe stereotypes (at least only with regards to what things get criticized often in the society), and a safe ride on the zeitgeist

12:28 PM
@M.A.R. its a sequel
Its safe, sells more toys...

@Luuklag One of those things that happens for 5 to 10 minutes then disappears?

@JourneymanGeek At the moment, they have enough creative to keep them going. Keep making Star Wars sequels though, and surprises would be on the way. Case in point, Solo.

@Spevacus I guess so

@M.A.R. eh
actually I disagree on that
they do have some creative stuff, but that's things like the mandalorian

@JourneymanGeek I don't think people would endure stock food for long.
@JourneymanGeek Yeah, I'm referring to the three sequels, not The Mandalorian.

12:30 PM
@M.A.R. and to me, I prefer the "longer form" stuff :D
@M.A.R. 2 were enjoyable, the last was uhhh
didn't invoke the sense of wonder

@Spevacus At least we still have the screenshots

What? No they weren't

@M.A.R. wrong choice of words :D
well the second was a little, IMO

@M.A.R. true. I bet they'll never produce a movie with gay male couple - they're way too coward for this, as well as any big corporation in the whole world. They only take the safe path. So these days it means strong female hero, several other females, dark skinned characters in various positions, etc. So that all the important audiences are happy. :)

@Luuklag Yeah, I saw what you were pointing out there. Super weird. Oh well, if it re-emerges, you've already got the report ready :)

12:32 PM
Still, not their fault. They're a business after all, and the movies are still good.

@ShadowWizardWearingMask not even that :D
even stuff like avatar, or more ... adventurous sci fi
tell a story never told before

@Luuklag Also, while you're here, grats on 10k :D Meta has a looot of deleted goo... enjoy :)

@ShadowWizardWearingMask Take a look at the Fantasy books these days.

@M.A.R. show me :)

thanks @Spevacus, I don't know if I want to see all of that ;)

12:33 PM
@Luuklag well there were some NSFW pics few days ago. :D
Think maybe even animated.

That people are trying to sell with PC pandering is revulsive, even if it's a collective sin. It's like "sex sells" → "making characters gay sells"

@ShadowWizardWearingMask No thank you, I don't think IT will like that

@M.A.R. eh, it needs to fit the character.
A bit like the whole push to make james bond a POC

@Luuklag so don't let IT see it. ;)

which I find insulting. We need our own heros.

12:35 PM
It's quite nice that R/A and Spam content is hidden by default, at least ;D

@JourneymanGeek a large bit

@JourneymanGeek POC? Bond?

@ShadowWizardWearingMask The next Bond is apparently going to be a dark-skinned female.

@Spevacus yup, bet it saved lots of people from being fired. :P

IMO making Idris Elba James Bond is a waste of a perfectly good actor who could easily own an original role on his own

12:36 PM
@M.A.R. and? About time. :D

Oh ha, if they leave that guy alone he can make a great Bond.

@M.A.R. meh, he can be someone new, and better :D

Still, what's POC in that context?

I like the whole concept of Bond as an Anachronism, and getting upstaged by someone else :D
@ShadowWizardWearingMask person of colour

12:37 PM
@Spevacus Yeah, thats a great feature!

@ShadowWizardWearingMask The problem here is making Bond female, and a dark-skinned one, is so misguided as the atrocious history erasing that it is, that I'm pretty sure it's no more than a marketing tactic.

the other name I saw was some dude called Dev Patel...
does he look like... a "James Bond" ?

Lol the dude from Lion?

as opposed to an actual indian dude on her Majesty's Secret Service and kicking ass?

You should just give him roles where he ponderously gazes at the ground

12:38 PM
@M.A.R. of course it is marketing tactic. And I bet they'll soon edit the old movies to remove any trace of scenes that are not politically correct, and release them again, clean and shining.

Well all the glamor is making me go blind, @Sha

@ShadowWizardWearingMask the problem with trying to make things politically correct in that sense is... it makes the erasure worse.

Meanwhile racists are racist, and sexists are sexist. The difference all of this censoring is supposed to accomplish is intangible.

That's what people want, so that's what people get...

@ShadowWizardWearingMask Neither cinema nor people are static entities being affected by each other. There's conscious choice, and each one affects the other.
So a zillion celebrities say BLM or donate to Notre Dame, while you get all this hypocrisy in movies. What is all this but a new way to conceal your real intent?

12:41 PM
@Luuklag you can now also see all the off topic questions on MSE long after they're nuked, e.g. this one. :)

@ShadowWizardWearingMask or worse :D

@M.A.R. it's all about trends. Those with zillions of followers in social media set those trends, and everyone follow.
And those with zillions of followers often get paid to say certain things.
So... it's circular, in a way.
@JourneymanGeek worse than off topic? Yeah, mentioned it before. ;)

The other day I was reading this opinion piece from I think NY times where a guy was explaining how MTV Cribs instated the consumerist tradition on the minds of the people from his generation

@ShadowWizardWearingMask heh, the other day someone had posted something we needed to uh... have deleted...

I didn't even know this show existed. But holy crap does it explain a lot.

12:46 PM
and some poor user actually looked and flagged it in horror

It's things like that that shape a society's behavior.

@JourneymanGeek hmm?

things that don't belong on SE :D

So people are all moralizing saints somewhere, but still watching things like Kardashians' ego trip elsewhere.

@JourneymanGeek things that are usually hidden behind/below clothes? :D

12:48 PM
lets leave it at that
@M.A.R. uhh.
I don't moralize
or watch reality TV :D

I saw that one post where some user posted two selfies that ChrisF edited after its deletion, but that wasn't necessarily vulgar, just nonsense.

Not you. Not anyone that sits down for five minutes and gives these things some thought.
@Spevacus Lol is it that same teenage dude I'm thinking about?

Probably.

'@Spevacus oh those are common

He has this sad look on his face and often goes "halp I'm stuck"?

Welp, error: no errors.

Can also add triggers, e.g.
$.on("UserGotUp").perform("flush");
I hate those toilets with a sensor, they always flush extra times just because I move around. Pure waste of water.

or... the ones that don't flush when you walk away

Toilets shouldn't flush on their own IMO - it's really something the person should be doing.
Urinals are fine, and much easier to detect when you really leave.
But the top of the top is something I read about a while ago, toilets that analyze what you put in them and alert you of health problems.
Let's see if it's still a thing...

i haven't seen that done at an individual toilet level, but for communites, like a college, or a city, etc

Huh, yeah it is. Newer article, I remember something from over a year ago. lol

lol

3:29 PM
@ShadowWizardWearingMask put a tissue roll

those usually flush when you're sitting on it
repeatedly
also... autolights that turn off cause the sensor's outside the stall

@Aibobot you mean light in the room itself activated by motion?

yup

@Aibobot ha, this was a fun occasion back then in the university

We had it for years at work and it was super irritating because when sitting for over 5 minutes it was turned off and you had to exit the stall!! Luckily it was changed at some point.

@MetaAndrewT. pretty sure it'll just clog them, like any toilet. ;)
@MetaAndrewT. do tell! :D

well, sometimes we had to dance (at least hand waving) just to ensure the sensor hit again...

NTU has a wierd campus :D
its spread out over a hill so the floor numbers make nooooo sense

This is really annoying if you want to click on a badge, or to just read it.
I'd kind of prefer it if you could click to remove the list, and not move your cursor.
@Rob not by clicking anywhere.
