Hello! Where can I find the current moderator policies, which are mentioned in this article? stackoverflow.com/help/mod-agreement-policies
specifically the policies for stackoverflow.com.

12:59 AM
@cheater as per that article - the tag on addition to the static mod agreement and such
There's no special policies for specific site mods usually

1:11 AM
@JourneymanGeek unfortunately that tag doesn't list much at all

Rob
@cheater SO has requirements that differ from other SE sites: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/399278/… and stackoverflow.com/election/12 list a few examples beyond the Moderator Agreement.

@cheater that's cause most of it should be in the mod agreement

@Rob @JourneymanGeek hmm, none of those docs really list what a moderator should be doing, when they should edit a question or close a question, and what they shouldn't be doing. Is there no such document?

Rob
Not that you asked about it but our site AskUbuntu has an additional agreement that must be signed.

it's good to know, thanks

Rob

Some moderators take a hands off approach, only doing what a user can not do, and some take a very hands on approach; frequently commenting, asking and answering, doing reviews (closing after first vote), writing extensively in the child meta, flying to conferences, etc.

is there a definition of what sort of quality is expected from a moderator's work?
s/from/of
for example, if a strong moderation action is performed, but it happened due to not understanding what was being viewed, because not enough care was taken to understand it, what happens?

Rob
It ought to be good enough that no complaint is successful; but mistakes do occur, and they should realize them when pointed out. Usually moderators have expertise in the subject of the site that they moderate; but it's not a requirement. IF you have a disagreement simply state your case on the site's child meta (NOT MSE) and people will take a look at it and discuss the problem - also there's a 'contsct link' at the bottom of the webpage if you feel (for good reason) that you can't resort
to the usual process.

what does "no complaint is successful" mean?

Rob
That you are wrong.

sorry, not sure what that means. would you mind rewording this please?

Rob
1:35 AM
If you complain and everyone says that you are wrong your complaint isn't successful.

hmm.. is this some sort of official policy?

@cheater moderators are kinda trusted to use their judgement. Most are pretty experienced on their respective sites

Rob
How did you think it worked?

@JourneymanGeek of course. but there's no system that doesn't get abused.
btw, does this chat make the star trek communicator sound when someone @'s me?

@cheater yes

1:37 AM
thanks.

Rob
It's not exactly (or even close) to the same sound, but that's how people refer to it.

@Rob sorry, i couldn't picture how moderator action review might work.

@cheater Here, see also the Linked and Related list in the right column.

2:11 AM
@Rob, thanks for the link. I have read the link, as well as looked at the right column items and read the ones that seemed relevant, however none of them really answer that question.

@cheater practically bring it up on meta. In practice the community can overrule a mod closure but you really need to make a great case for it

@JourneymanGeek I understand that's the approved process for overruling a mod. But how do we ensure the mod's work is of good enough quality? If there's no process for that, then there's potential for abuse - a mod who closes questions too harshly, makes wild question edits, etc wouldn't be controllable.

Rob
Answered, a dozen comments above; and directly above your last comment.
You complained and received a few answers, that it wasn't a "moderator" was one of them; and this:
Regardless, there's no abuse to report here. If you think your question was closed incorrectly, you can ask about it on meta, which you already did. — John Montgomery 2 hours ago
Then it was reopened:

2:36 AM
I guess someone is a fan of last winterbash

@Rob the only answer a dozen comments above is "how do you think it worked?", or did you mean something else?

@cheater Typically, the fellow members of the site in which the mod would potentially be causing harm with their tools would hold them accountable on Meta. If this became a frequent problem, I'm sure a Community Manager would take notice and have a chat with the moderator. There's no real formal process for reviewing a mod's work, and I feel like the creation of one would leave much to be desired.

why do you feel that would be the case?

Mainly because there's just so much that encompasses what a moderator does and how they handle the tasks they're set about to do, that creating a formal process for reviewing the actions they took would be very... Well, it would be time consuming for any reviewer. The simplest solution is what's currently in place: If a moderator is abusing their privileges, and has perhaps been brought up in an abuse report to SE Staff...
Then I'm sure it'd be handled appropriately.

(JG's sock here...)
> Even with active community self-regulation, moderators occasionally need to intervene. Moderators are human exception handlers, there to deal with those (hopefully rare) exceptional conditions that should not normally happen, but when they do, they can bring your entire community to a screaming halt — if you don’t have human exception handling in place.

2:43 AM
Keep in mind as well, it's rare that a mod operates solely on their own in difficult scenarios. Other mods can hold them accountable in certain scenarios, and hopefully the mod team of that particular site can have a conversation about controversial decisions and reach a consensus.

and that's what we do
a lot of the time, mods also go "hey, I'm doing <foo> to other mods, or ask for advice"
We also don't have the option for non unilateral closure and such

Rob
@Aibobot Better with animation:

Lots of mods prefer to not use their unilateral closure and deletion powers unless it's needed. Others use them a bit more loosely, but still only when they're sure something needs closed/deleted/etc.

yup

i'm not talking about extremely difficult situations or anything like that. just casual egregious edits or closures
and.. it's nice that you guys think like this of yourselves, that you'll do the right thing, etc. but no such self-description has ever stopped anyone from being abusive
i mean i hope you see the problem here. you're the ones you're accountable to, and you're giving your word that you're doing the right thing here.
it's not unusual for there to be a divide between what people do in a certain situation, and what they say they'll do after being asked what they would do

3:05 AM
@cheater I mean... Once again, Meta's your friend here. If the edits and closures really are egregious, then the rest of the community should back the poster of the Meta question.
If a mod refuses to cooperate with the requests of the community... then that's another situation entirely.

what community? pretty much only mods frequent meta. closures are anonymous. there's no accountability.
how do the users know if there's a single mod being overly strict? how do we know it's not joe today, john tomorrow, and jane on friday?
there's no way to carry any sort of accountability record or score
(at least that i know of)

@cheater closures and edits have a record of who did it
at the very least in the timeline

Closures, deletions, edits are all very public.
Well, deletion's a bit more tricky to get a hold of (10k privs and all that)
But if it's your post, you can see who deleted it.

I'm under the impression that there may be a few automated red flags for mass deletions even by mods
or might be a shog special

Closure was hidden from the post notice recently so that new users don't feel quite so ganged up on when their question is closed (and for a few other reasons.) But the people who voted to close are still visible in the revision history and timeline.

3:11 AM
I see.
thanks for pointing that out.

There's loads of accountability detailed per post, and I'm sure there are mod logs of mod only actions (suspensions, account destruction, other stuff I'm not aware of)

Q: What is the XY problem?

GnomeWhat is the XY problem? When asking questions, how do I recognize when I'm falling into it? How do I avoid it? Return to FAQ index

Hey Rob, not sure how that is related.

I think what Rob's getting at is that you perceive a problem with mods performing egregious closures/edits, and are trying to propose a way to accomplish a degree of accountability/review of mod actions. In this instance, moderator abuse is the X, and your proposed solution is the Y. You're focusing on the Y much more than the X. There'd have to be a fair few instances of mod abuse to warrant your proposal.

@Spevacus basically everything that a mod does is logged

3:20 AM
No ninja-modding, eh? :D

@Spevacus that's a leap. we're talking about one specific aspect of a thing, that's why we are focusing on that thing.
Either way thanks for helping me understand this so far. How can I find out whether a user is a moderator, if I go to their profile? Is there a way to see this?

@cheater All mods have a little diamond just after their name, and their profile has a diamond after their name, as well as a blue (or purple? I'm colorblind) tag that says "Moderator"
Here's our friendly neighborhood Journeyman Geek, a mod on Meta Stack Exchange.

@Spevacus actually its very useful when you want to check back on something you did before :D

Thanks, now I see the difference!

@cheater Mhmm! Not everyone who votes to close your question, votes to delete your question, or edits your question... is a moderator. Only if there's a diamond after their name are they a moderator.

3:29 AM
@cheater its probably useful to know who's a moderator before worrying about moderator abuse

Thanks. I wish this were displayed prominently and explained in the closure message. For example, "this question has been closed because of a vote of non-moderator users". It is a normal assumption to make that if a piece of content has been removed or somehow otherwise disabled then that this has been done by a moderator, since that's how most websites work. SO is different, I get it, but it would help users like me who don't use it that often.

a lot of 'moderation' type tasks are done by the community, through queues and other means

right
i became completely unaware of this, even though I used to know it

@cheater but in some cases you can have say 4 non mods and one mod, or any number of non mods with a mod doing the final vote

right
thanks for the help, I appreciate it!

@cheater There is a link in the blue closure banner which refers you to the help center for more information; for detailed information there is the FAQ:

A: What is a "closed" or "duplicate" question?

Justin StandardWhat does it mean for a question to be closed? When a question is closed, no additional answers may be posted to it, although the question and existing answers can still be edited (by users with edit privileges or by suggested edits) and voted upon, and will continue to count for badges. - Users with at least 3,000 (500 on beta sites) reputation may vote to close any question (see limits below), five votes are usually required.
- Moderators may close any question (regardless of their reputation) with a single vote

@Tinkeringbell @JourneymanGeek I have started a bounty on this question with a optional message. Ping me if this sounds improper to start a bounty.

4:25 AM
eh, it seems valid to me @Pandya
pretty useless but valid :D

@Aibobot useless?

4:46 AM
I'm skeptical of the effectiveness of bounties for getting FRs to get accepted

Ohk. You mean bounty is useless, I thought you meant that FR is useless.

5:34 AM
@Νеvеrꭑoꭇе of course that I did(n't)! :D
@Ollie nope and nada. Why?
@Pan! Hello!
@Pan there's almost no such thing as improper bounty. Sometimes it's pointless and waste of reputation, but improper? Very rare, e.g. if it's only to block question closure on a bad question that needs to get closed.
It's your rep, do whatever you wish with it. :)
@Aibobot well it's just a bump, that cost rep. Each bump has equal chances to make the request done, or at least get a review status. No?
Quite a few of such bumps got requests I posted to get done, sometimes years after I posted them.

@ShadowWizardWearingMask Hello! How are you?

I have a general question for anyone who sees it: What do you think about "just" using a userstyle/userscript to fix any and all issues with how the sites look and work?
like there's been dark mode themes for SO forever, anyone who really wanted to use a dark theme could find them or just use a general dark-mode-maker addon/extension

alrighty, just looking out for accidental self-dox

9:31 AM
All good... and one can't dox me using email, just spam.
And somehow I hardly get spam, which I consider miracle.

I mostly get java and data analyst job offers from recruiters who don't understand the distinction between those and a c# dev
idk if I'll be working for anyone after this job though

@user1306322 what you mean "just"? People doing it for years, and it's all good.
There is one big script that unify tons of things, SOUP.
Personally I don't use any, but it's fine that others use. I just point a blaming finger at userscripts first when something weird happens, which I can't reproduce. ;)
@user1306322 what you mean? What job you have now?

well, if we're trying to bring the "greater good" efforts to all site visitors, ideally we should be active on metas and pester devs to fix these things, but "just" fixing these issues for ourselves and calling it a day is easier and a helluva lot faster than waiting

@user1306322 true, but many people won't use the scripts, some just don't know how to install and can't be bothered, some too lazy, some without a good reason, like me. :)
So it can't really replace the bug reports and feature requests on Meta.

@ShadowWizardWearingMask c# dev :P and in the meantime me and my boiz made a private Q&A stack ripoff site just how we wanted, integrated it with our email, calendar, git and issue tracker, so now that I know it's not that hard, idk maybe i've gone mad with power

9:39 AM
It will always be a workaround/bonus.
@user1306322 stack ripoff? Doesn't sound good.... ?

and at my current position I might be fit for a lead position but I kinda wanna do my own things and I've found that I totally can, as it turns out, because it's totally possible
@ShadowWizardWearingMask well, in visual style mostly
none of the complexities of inferred and partially explained complicated systems which govern the real deal were even attempted
coz it turns out we don't need most of that for work

@user1306322 Oh, I see now. Well good for you, leading is more profitable than "just" developing, usually more interesting too. But you also get to pay for mistakes you don't make.

all the users behave adequately, so no need for distinction into different reputation privilege threshold levels, so only "normal user" and "admin"

Whatever makes you happy! :D

it was a fun experiment and the feeling of "oh shit we actually can" is undescribable
but now I know I don't want to grow an open public community around such a site :p
not by myself
that would definitely not bring me happiness

9:44 AM
@user1306322 take Shog. ;)

hehe :) he already found a new job without fully leaving his old post
and besides I've gotten too used to only having adequate users on a Q&A site, idk if I can go back to dealing with internet randos

@user1306322 well when your new site will get more traffic than SO, he'll be happy to join, I'm sure. :P
@user1306322 how you get those "adequate users"? Weren't they all "internet randos" in the beginning?
Random is random, you can't know how a person/user will evolve.

honestly if I were to attempt a public community of any kind in the future, I would implement "gated communities" to join which you'd have to prove your adequacy in some way, like show a history of posting normal things and putting some effort into them on the "open space" portion of the community first

It depends on many factors as well.
@user1306322 ^

some subreddits operate like this - you can't post until you earn some karma on other subs, some even have manual approval process to join
I know, they can link their SO profile :D

9:48 AM
I bet some of the worst trolls on SO/SE are awesome people who can be awesome users. But they got so pissed off, that they became something different.
And you can't in any means identify them in advance, no test can see this.

but really I'm tired of dealing with the meta side of things, while being a user of these sites for so long. And in general, in life, I'd rather spend time doing cool stuff that I actually want, and not building tools and communities around those tools which could empower me to make the stuff I want, as a roundabout sidetrack thing

Putting gates in the community will just cause less people.

it's like there are people who want to be doctors and teachers, I get that, but I'd rather teach only a few people who have already proven their competency, and only when I know it's going to be worth it because I'll be working with them later, you know

@user1306322 when you build sites, the human factor is crucial, you can't escape it.

I guess what I mean is I'll be contributing to society in a different way, coz i'm tired of this (gestures broadly at nothing in particular), and I'm still excited about other things

9:54 AM
If you can do this, kudos. :)
back to writing boring code full of bugs
:D

well, I'm still writing code, just a bit less boring and for other projects
also turns around to see what's going on in the work window

10:16 AM
what I also meant to say was, I respect those who still have the entrusiasm to keep on doing this, and hope everything will continue just as well without my wayward attempts at contributing :p
for a complicated machine such as this, when you realize (of course after years of it developing and existing and using it personally) that it could have been designed differently, better perhaps, it's hard to watch it evolve sooo slowly and recently in the wrong directions
it's hard to maintain enthusiasm
the apocalypse times aren't helping either lol

When the "One question with new activity" label in the All Questions page appears
Upon reloading the page it disappears, and doesn't come back for at least ten-fifteen seconds.
Why is this?
It's not just reloading the page either
if you click on another question, and then come back, it's also gone.

@Ollie when you refresh or navigate away the banner goes away for good until another activity as far as I'm aware

Q: Real time updates get lost when navigating back to a page

DennisI love the real time updates to questions, answers, and inbox we have now, since my F5 key was starting to wear out. There's one scenario though that still makes me refresh manually. I'll illustrate for questions: While looking at Recently Active 'javascript' Questions - Stack Overflow, suddenl...

As far as I understand the mumbo jumbo there, the banner is pushed more real time than that the actual list is updated?

5:31 PM
Thats my same understanding of that jumbo
But I have an inherent un-expertise in mumbo

Rob
As explained the question and the banner telling you about it are two separate things; the banner goes away either when you reload or leave and come back, while the question disappears because your cached view of the webpage didn't have it so it's not there when you go away and come back.
Similar to 'an edit has been made ...'.
Arguably they could leave the banner active (visible, regardless) until either you click on it to dismiss it (refreshing the page and showing the update) or the page times-out and the update automagically appears and the banner toasts.
🍴↖️🎃 :)

Rob
@Rubiksmoose Viewing the source (Luke) it looks like they use wss:// to pass messages; and it's a lighter load to trigger the banner(s) for everyone on the tab, rather than fetch the vote count, user icon, title, question body, and potentially fire MathJax for everyone (leaving a partially updated webpage, with one question accurate, and the vote counts (and any edits or [status]) stale) so essentially most of the webpage is wrong (whereas a user reload
would (theoretically) provide the user with a webpage that is current (correct) in its entirety.

Lots of lost souls today... you can see it's getting closer to Halloween.

Spooky.
Not unhappy that fall's breezing in soon, though. It's my favorite season :)

@Spevacus I'm hoping for lots of wind :) I do like fall, though I like spring best: somehow the days getting longer gives me a bit more energy

@Tinkeringbell Springtime allergies absolutely wreck me, unfortunately, otherwise I'd like it quite a bit more. :(
This year wasn't so bad, though. Had like... one bad week during spring, and that was that.

8:18 PM
Oof. Just a week sounds quite well then?

Really well, yeah. Ordinarily it's about a month long ordeal. Each day, praying that allergy medication works.

Blegh..I guess that makes me glad the only thing I have to worry about is eczema, which doesn't do too well in very hot weather. But cold baths help :D

@Tinkeringbell cold?

It's honestly one of the reasons why I like fall so much. Everything feels so much more... clear.

@Spevacus I know!

8:21 PM
@Ollie cold. Ground water in a kiddie pool cold ;)

They also have awesome cider doughnuts out here...

@Spevacus Fall is nice!

@Tinkeringbell especially in Vermont. It's so pretty.

Most trees here are pine trees, so not much prettiness sadly

@Tinkeringbell Oof, my girlfriend has eczema as well. She has some sort of lotion that works really well for her, though, that I guess keeps her mostly rash/itch free with only the occasional flare up.

8:23 PM
@Spevacus I have some creams that work. I always wait too long (I won't start unless it's a heavy flare up) because they're a pain to use.

Rob
@Tinkeringbell I like the crinkle cut sweet mixed ones (circled), it used to be that you could buy whole jars of just those but now they only are available in the mixed jar:

They leave you stickier than the average toddler and require a lot of counting of days to use/ use not
@Rob I think this is similar to those crinkle cut ones. You can actually only buy big pickles like the one I had in ... Like a butcher shop but for fish?

Why can you only fetch vote counts every second?

@Tinkeringbell That's called a fishmonger.
A fishmonger (fishwife for female practitioners) is someone who sells raw fish and seafood. Fishmongers can be wholesalers or retailers, and are trained at selecting and purchasing, handling, gutting, boning, filleting, displaying, merchandising and selling their product. In some countries modern supermarkets are replacing fishmongers who operate in shops or fish markets. == Worshipful Company of Fishmongers == The fishmongers guild, one of the earliest guilds, was established in the City of London by a Royal Charter granted by Edward I shortly after he became king in 1272. Partnership w...

@DavidPostill Thank you! They're called visboer in Dutch, I somehow guessed it wouldn't be fish farmer in English ;)

8:28 PM
@Ollie Why would you want to fetch them more often?

Rob
Always called them "the fish store", to distinguish from "the fish market" which is more outdoorsy (even if partially indoors). Hard to explain without a photo; the fish butcher ?

@DavidPostill I don't. Just curious.

@Rob it's a fish store. Completely inside business thing ;)

Rob
@DavidPostill No for me also, that's the "fish market".

@Rob A market implies more than one vendor. So a fish market would have multiple fishmongers. A shop however is also a fishmonger.

For those wondering what my quick question was about: meta.stackexchange.com/a/353755/361484

yeah... i'm of the opinion of yea that's a problem... but not necessarily a fire
If any of the, problematic, side effects occur, it'd be bringing the action to the forefront where it can be flagged for a mod to step in

@Spevacus *userscripts

Well, nearly anyway.

Rob
Mod Tools on a few sites is good enough, much of the power and far fewer of the complaints.
The Review Queue is where the tears fall.

9:14 PM
I wonder what the status on the review queue overhaul is.
@Ollie Congrats on 2k btw :)

@Spevacus oh you saw that?
Thanks :D
If you upvoted, thanks :P
I'll be going now though

Later!

Rob
