I have an old graphire tablet, friend has a bamboo once you learn to work with them, they're awesome. In the right situations.

Hello
I ask here before going to meta. Were there already a close proposition for question which will never find an answer?
For example, this question:

Q: How to kill Application Switcher?

konzepzAll of the sudden the Application Switcher's graphics breaks: Restart does help, but became a nuisance. How can I kill it? Restart it? UPDATE: Logging off fixed this.

the guy logged out and back in and it seems to have solved his problem
this question will most likely never get an accepted answer. would it be better to close it, so that people with the same symptoms (but not the simple solution) can ask again?

Heh, that comment length counter bug report got all sorts of answers.
I'm still fairly certain it's a duplicate, but I couldn't find an original, so maybe not.

Anyone know what's causing this?

Q: Reputation history on "my profile" page shows 0 for some days

Sachin ShanbhagI just checked my reputation history page in "My profile" and for some days, it shows 0 reputation gained/lost without any further descriptions. Given below screenshot for reference - I know this means on that day my reputation score had some changes, maybe some acceptance and some downvote o...

@Chris My guess is something to do with a deleted something or another, but I'm not sure.

I feel like it's been asked before, but I couldn't find anything on Meta
It almost looks like a bug, not a discussion, but I could be wrong.
@TimStone For the transcript...

Q: Why do I keep getting told I posted less than 15 characters when I posted more than 15?

HoganI tried to post the following comment and it claims it was less than 15 when it was more. Based on Tim's comment and testing I believe it would not let me post because with @Shadow removed it is less than 15. However, the characters left message indicates I have passed the 15 character minimum t...

Q: Why don't idle days show up, but a 0 rep day does show up?

mtijnAs the title says, why does this 0 rep day show up in the screenshot? If a day has 0 rep, it was probably not very productive. So, why not classify it as idle and not show it like SO does for all idle days? I have no idea why this shows up, I probably had some rep and then lost it. If that's tru...

@TimStone Excellent, thanks! Voting to close this question as a dupe of this one.

Yeah, I was kind of iffy if they were actually duplicates since the old one isn't as clear about the issue being there's nothing displayed (ignoring the huge image of course). They should probably be retagged as either or (more likely) too.

Why does the chrome page speed extension report a score that is orders of magnitude better than the score that I get from google for the same page using my API key? Caching?

6:23 PM
First Steve Jobs, then Dennis Ritchie, now John McCarthy. Just wanted to mention that because I hadn't seen it anywhere until just now.

@TimPost Hmm, it shouldn't...In the FAQ they mention that it uses a different rendering engine and user agent (although I'd be surprised if they were using something that was drastically different from Chrome), but eh...what about network location?
@PopularDemand Oh wow, seriously? Damn :/

@PopularDemand you really need twitter.

@TimStone The API says 72, the chrome extension says 95

@PopularDemand We clearly need another banner on Stack Overflow.
(Just kidding, of course.)

The banner is what happens when Jeff goes on vacation. We're not doing that again.

6:27 PM
@TimPost Oh, well I guess the score is largely dependent on factors other than speed anyway isn't it? Rather daft of me, sorry. Uhm, hmm...

Is there any difference in the recommendations? (I'm not terribly familiar with the extension/service)

@TimStone I thought of that, but the Chrome version reports 95% from The Philippines over broken wifi, where the API reports 72.

@TimPost That sounds like a Meta meme: "When Jeff goes on vacation"

@jcolebrand I'm perfectly capable of wasting my life without assistance from technology.

6:30 PM
@TimStone And the list of 'problems' is quite different.
I'm pretty sure it's caching, as the API still reports on stuff I fixed.

Ohh, then yes.
The online tool does cache results for a certain period of time (I'm not sure how long though, they say "short").

Now if only the Chrome extension would let me export in some format I could parse :)
Well, six hours later, it's still showing a stark difference. I'll try at 12 hours.
Needless to say, the API results aren't something you want to graph when you just finished major surgery.
I've got some triggers in Mercurial that automatically call it, based on strings in the commit log when I push
Should be 92, graph says 72, client says WTF?

Yeah, ouch. :/

Fortunately, I can make HG say "Did you click this link? Does the data match what you got in tools?" if not, "Push later"
The reports are triggered on changegroups

6:48 PM
Aww now WTF. One went up, the other went down
I wish the client wasn't so fixated on a single number.
The problem, clearly is "Refresh" != "Refresh"

7:07 PM
@TimPost What was wrong with the banner?

@Moshe Well, it's quite simple. If you take the current age of programming idols, factor in the life expectancy of their gender (which is overwhelmingly male), you'll quickly conclude that the banner will be quite busy serving a rather unintended (and to many, quite annoying) purpose.
Furthermore, who merits a banner?

Q: Dennis Ritchie goes into the night without a quote on Stack Overflow?

tzupAlas, Dennis Ritchie is no longer with us. But I don't see a Dennis Ritchie quote on Stack Overflow. Why is this so? I think he deserves it. Out of 100 programmers (Stack Overflow's audience last time I checked), I expect all of them to know. Not a rant, just an opinion.

If that can't be decided with a published algorithm, we should not be doing it.
Death has this tenacious habit of keeping the rest of us quite busy.
The banner for Jobs was an egregious mistake. It's not going to be repeated.
If you want to honor a programmer that died, go write great code.
I suggested replacing the ads with a memorial in the appropriate tags, so it's shown to people who would appreciate seeing it. Does an Andriod dev care about the man who birthed LISP dying? Probably not.
On the same token, would you invite Microsoft to Stallman's funeral? Probably not.

Not every site on the internet needs to capitalize on the sympathy overload...

Everyone that cares about it probably heard about it.
Unless we have some goal other than a memorial. e.g. this person's family needs help, it's probably best to continue with business as usual. I don't mean to sound harsh or jaded, but we can't have another "Why did Jack get a banner when Joe didn't?" The simple answer is , neither get one.

7:22 PM
Precisely. You can't win once you start choosing like that.

Joel set a bad precedent. That was a mistake, it's not going to be repeated.

Steve didn't deserve it anyway... what a cluster. He was certainly a visionary, but also quite the selfish arrogant asshole.

That's precisely the call that we're not going to make again.
And I agree with you.
If RMS kicks it next week, I'd hate to see a banner, so would he.

@TimPost I guess I'll finally forgive you for deleting my chat messages. ;)

And I guess I finally forgive you for writing them.
:P

7:29 PM
Touché

I'm kidding. Sometimes moderation sucks. You like the post, you agree with the post and you also have to remove the post.
It's not a personal thing, it's just enforcing what the community says, which is occasionally overridden by what management says.
It is most decidedly a privilege as much as it is a burden.

Q: Can an overriden method ever be analized statically?

TrufaGiven this situation: interface Interfaz { void M1(); } abstract class ClaseAbstracta : Interfaz { public void M1() { } public abstract Boolean M2(); } class ClaseConcreta : ClaseAbstracta { public override Boolean M2() { return false; } public virtual void M3(Int32 i) { ...

Is the question clear?

You probably meant "analyzed" instead of "analized"...
Also, what does "statically animalized" mean?

7:45 PM
@Chris damn spell checker

I suspected as much.

and damn dysleixa [sic]

It also might help to give the declaration of abst.

8:34 PM
Someone had wayyyyy too much time on their hands: ecsspert.com/twitter.php

9:21 PM
do you really think so? Once you learn the basic formulas it's just a matter of sitting down and doing the translation from vector to CSS

9:58 PM
I like the atari one.

Can anyone confirm whether tactical downvoting was the motivation for locking in votes?
0
A: Should we allow edits to reverse upvotes and downvotes?

NullUserException இ_இI don't think this is an issue. I do this all the time to reverse downvotes and upvotes I give because: I misunderstood the question or the answer and upon further reflection I want to change my vote. The post was ninja edited (ie: within the 5 minute edit window) and my vote is now "wrong," bu...

A: If you just witnessed tactical downvoting, is it a reportable offense?

Jeff AtwoodTo help deal with the "tactical downvoting" problem, we have radically reduced the window for undoing votes. There is now only the very briefest of windows where you can undo a vote. (edit: this was increased to 5 minutes) After that, the vote is permanently "locked in", until the post is edite...

For some reason, I always thought that there was some other motivation, as well.

Do you mean about the votes needing an edit to change your mind?
I'm pretty sure that predated tactical downvoting by some period
They may have changed the window due to tactical downvoting

@Chris Like what?

To enrage voters with unsteady hands! I smell a conspiracy.

I suspect Jeff made some claim about limiting just as a matter of policy at some point, but so far as I can recall it was all about the codexon

> Agree? Disagree? Walnuts? Cantaloupe?
Brillant!

11:16 PM
@Shog9 I think that it would be rather annoying to allow people to flip their votes back and forth at will
Reputation histories could get messy
Plus, it could encourage other bad behavior: "Here, upvote ten of my answers today so I can get Mortarboard, then go ahead and reverse your votes."

yawn

@jcolebrand Yes.

@Chris Meh.
Do you understand how much finesse it takes to do effective "tactical voting"? (as opposed to simply down-voting competing answers, which is still possible)

Crap I forgot to do something while I was out today.

DO THAT THING!

11:22 PM
Thanks @Shog9!
It was "buy milk".
I am going to do that now.

It's always buy milk. Donno why I think I won't forget it, when I always do.

@TimStone I think the five-minute window is plenty of time to appease voters with unsteady hands. :)

I've stood in the store, next to the milk, and then walked out with cream (but no milk).
I get milk delivered now. And still forget it.
I grew up on a dairy farm, where daily I would - you guessed it - forget the milk.

I used to purchase milk at the store when I already had milk in the fridge
I just buy a half gallon everytime I think I might need milk
I'm very rarely wrong
When I am, guess what tasty treat I give myself when I get home

Milk?

11:34 PM
Girl Guide cookies!
Now I must cook something.

mmm... frozen thin-mints.
Hum... Why oh why is "Ace of Spades" tagged as a blues song?
