11:00 AM
A lot of folks who hold opposing viewpoints might care as passionately as you do.

@JourneymanGeek On meta, there is always opposition.

@MartinJames hmm'
"Us vs them" vs "A contest of ideas"

@SomewhatMemorableName Not everyone is as capable of filtering their words ;) Opinions are opinions, and although it helps if they're expressed nicely, they're just opinions in the end ;)

I mean, the opposition might be right, but it's always there:)

@Tinkeringbell and sometimes folks with poor filters can be a good source of.. unvarnished truth
just need to powerwash off the guano ;)

11:01 AM
@MartinJames More of a spectrum than a left-right thing I guess :P

@MartinJames or see it as "there's our side - folks who care about $site" vs...
I don't even know ;)
Spammers? ;p

People who have a different idea of what caring means in this context

I'm thinking more of users like.... Evan

If someone's arguing on meta, they clearly and obviously care at least a bit

@SomewhatMemorableName Oh I can think of a few folks like that

11:03 AM
@Magisch Yeah.. never tell someone on meta 'don't worry' :P

didn't see the point in naming and potentially summoning shaming.

@JourneymanGeek Meta is a temple to truth

hopes he's not on that list

@MartinJames I consider it a marketplace of opinions.
And sometimes I'm selling. Sometimes I'm buying

@JourneymanGeek More af a car-boot sale.

11:05 AM
I don't think you'll ever reach 'truth' on meta :P

@MartinJames and every now and then, the crappy little trinket you picked up for a 5ver is a bloody original faberge ;)

Meta is murder, after all

@Magisch and proof anyone can be horribly wrong ;)

@JourneymanGeek Do they have car-boot sales in oil sheikdoms?

@Magisch Meh... I don't think that's true either.

11:06 AM
@MartinJames never been to one.

@Tinkeringbell I was quoting a famous blog post

@Magisch Well, it isn't famous enough: I don't recall reading it :P

Coms to think if it, do they have car-trunk sales in 'murrica?

@MartinJames I'm pretty sure I've seen some on tv

@MartinJames for some reason I'm thinking EEVblog Dave and dodgy speakers

11:07 AM
9 years old now

Compared to UserVoice? Meta is Murder.

@Magisch Hahaha okay that was a good read ;)

@Tinkeringbell Jeff's blogs are actually pretty well written

I thought you meant murder in the sense of 'downvotes, close-votes, deletions and nasty comments' ;)

and a darned useful way to get insight into the decisions made, and changed into the early days of SE

11:14 AM
Well... I don't have time to read all of them right away :P

lol
Excuses!

I've finished my ice cream, lunch break is over, I should probably start compiling code again :P

(naw, I just remember a handful so I look smart and erdutite)

@Tinkeringbell I would leave that to the compiler. Have another ice cream ...

ice cream?! Are you cheating on me with others, @rene? :D

11:16 AM
please start compiling the code as soon as possible so you can continue reading that blog, or just chatting with us ;p

Oh wait, it's not that ice cream. All good!

right, I guess I was OK

@rene I don't think I can sneak out of this open floor plan office that easily :P
But yeah, the compiler is running

Sadly my code compiles instantly
so I don't have an excuse

@Magisch Nothing goes instantly here :( I'm working with emacs and some proprietary language (magik). I need to compile, start sessions... I don't even have autocomplete or spellcheck warnings :(

11:19 AM
we recently even bought a new server to make the latex compiling faster
a behemoth 25 page delivery note report compiles including barcodes in 2s now
That is with dev debugging enabled

Most fun? I have to work on a server, and the connection fails at least 5 times a day
Which means I have to log in again...

@ShadowWizard meh, the "about me" is really supposed to be the one place where you can write pretty much what you want ("be nice" policy still needs to be observed, obviously), so... not inclined to do delete. What I've done in the past in these clear cases, though, is just clear their "about me," so I'll do that

@JNat heh, smart.... thanks!
Poor spammer.... ;)

@JNat sorry to bother you but would you mind checking if a dev or an SRE is aware / working on this bug. It is about to be closed as a duplicate which I think is wrong but that might cause it goes unnoticed.
for 6 to 8 weeks ...

@rene I pinged people ;)

11:32 AM
awesome, thanks

Just a Naturally occuring conversation here

@rene why SRE?

@ShadowWizard maybe a sql query / batch that is timing out?
that needs no dev, just someone kicking hardware / config

@rene so why not pinging @bluefeet about it?

I reckoned they are still a sleep?

11:36 AM
But she'll see the ping when waking up... ;)
(no need for "they" when gender is publicly known :))

I do try to take these kind of things into account when I ping SE staff ...

You're too good...

floral, almost

So everything's an audit today? — ivarni 1 min ago
funny

... noticed Shroud of the Avatar has "released" on Steam, been reading the reviews. As I feared they confirm my original feelings.

11:46 AM
@Derpy What's that?

@Magisch The aleged "spiritual successor" to Ultima Online. In the works AT LEAST since 2013, and still as now in a beta stage.
And no Ultima at all

cheap knockoff mmo?

It is made by Richard Garriot, so it is no knockoff.
That is the guy that made the original games, before EA bought and destroyed Origins
But the gameplay is nothing at all like the Ultima Online people loved in the old days.
Basically, the whole situation now looks like Mighty #9

@Magisch these quotes from a review should give you a pretty rough idea of the state of the "game"
> Before I quit, I knew this game-in-progress was doomed to fail for one main reason: Letting a privileged few purchase wide areas of the map, townships and such, for outrageous sums of real world cash, and then, along with a monthly subscription fee, making the rest of us slobs pay our new "lords" real world cash to "rent" a plot monthly for the privilege of living on their land

lol

and if this already looks bad....
> But wait..there's more..If one of the "lords of the land" quits the game, everything he owned, including the plot you rented from him, your house and everything in it, disappears! You'll have to start all over again! <look of incredulity>

So basicly just a serf simulator for people with disposable income

@Derpy ewww... sounds like a really bad game.

12:13 PM
I guess. I'll stick to WoW

I made a self promise long ago: never pay for online games.

I pay monthly for WoW and feels its worth it
Well technically I pay monthly practically I pay with ingame gold

@ShadowWizard I made that promise too, yet I broke it for one game I play a lot ;) I feel like if I play it that much, the developers need some money to keep the game ad-free ;)

12:35 PM
@Tinkeringbell hehe, well, I do pay one time for "small" games, or PS games, just not online games where the company is making tons of money anyway from people who get addicted. :)

I guess I'm the addict in that case :P

what game? If I may ask? ;)

Empire 4 kingdoms ;)
I have a nice group of people there, next bbq will be somewhere in September
It's a mobile game... not really very interesting unless there's fun people

> This app is completely free to play. Additionally it offers optional in-app purchases.
huh
Like printers which are really cheap, but the ink costs tons of money.
@Tinkeringbell and they all pay? Or just you?

@ShadowWizard Out of a group of 65, I think about 10 pay monthly, and another 20 do single purchases now and then
The rest plays for free, and it's really a game that can be played well for free too

12:41 PM
whoa.. lots of people. How you met all of them?

@ShadowWizard free to play mobile games can be very different. Some are filled with microtransactions. Some you won't ever feel the urge to pay a single coin for.

@ShadowWizard It's called an alliance :P People want to belong to a group, and ours has a system of 2 sub-groups. We recruit new players into the first tier, if they stay and reach a certain level, they get invited to go the second... and then they eventually end up in the group of 65

or just play... Ingress

@SomewhatMemorableName I've heard of that. Doesn't that require walking?

@Tinkeringbell at least walking, can be as fast as riding a bike/car

12:45 PM
@SomewhatMemorableName Doesn't sound lazy enough for me :P

.... Ingress - did you realize Pokemon GO is based on Ingress?

When both were developed by Niantic... yes.

@Derpy Yes, I knew that ;) That's where I know the name Ingress from ;)

Many Pokemon GO Poke-stops where actually ported from Ingress as far as I know
that's why some of the Stops had such weird descriptions.
... I think somewhere there is a stone donkey statue with a description similar to
> Nope, this isn't the Concrete Donkey from Worms

12:50 PM
I actually played pokemon go for some time

Worms does wonders to went out anger.
I still have my CPU level 1 enemy teams called "The SharePointers" with the worms "OWSTimer", "w3wc", "BDC Module" and "ConfigDB"

... looks like your truest enemies...

@Derpy oooohhh ConfigDB ....

googling 'w3wc' returned The Hyphen Site™ as the first result!?

typo, it is w3wP
W3wp.exe ==> IIS Worker Process

1:15 PM
The dystopia we deserve

1:32 PM
What makes them think we deserve this?

@Derpy Is that and as in only chicken wings with cheesy crust? you can still get just chicken wings? :P

I'm more interested in a stand-alone cheesy crust

Hahaha that shouldn't be too hard?
What is a cheesy crust btw? Is that like the top cheesy layer of lasagna?

@Tinkeringbell Probably. Only the refrigerated container with the pre-packed, freeze-dried cheese version got lost.

@Tinkeringbell Sometimes (mostly for american style pizza) they put cheese in the crust
So like a solid about 0.5cm diameter cheese strip is folded into the crust before baking the pizza

1:41 PM
@Magisch Ooh... I knew that, I saw pictures of it. I think you can order those here too ;)

@Magisch Yeah - and it explodes out of the crust like lava, burning my face:(

Somehow I was thinking the chicken wings had a cheesy crust

I don't eat pizza tbh

You're not alone ;)

1:42 PM
there are boneless chicken cheese crust chicken wings
For when you really want to let your arteries know you hate them

@Magisch It's all too much.. I'll just have the ham salad.

@Magisch Well, if my mind is allowed to sometimes make me think I hate me, I can certainly let parts of me know I hate them :P

I much prefer the solid crust, (well, our dog does).

@MartinJames you should post bailey pictures

1:49 PM
@Magisch IP usually post them in 'The Litter Box' :)
@JohnDvorak Umm.. I think the 'Bailey' reference was to our dog's name, rather than castle architecture:)

Pheasant plucker..

did he really kill that bird?

Is it really a pheasant?

@Magisch Yup - I was walking him on his extending lead when he lunged into the grass verge. He held the bird down until it was dead, picked it up, carried it home and ate it on the lawn.

Is that legal?
You'd get in trouble for killing a bird here

2:30 PM
@JohnDvorak Well, not really, not by then. More a pheasant carcass.
@Magisch Well, the bird was on a grass verge at the side of a public road. If some landowner wanted to lay claim to it, s/he would have a hard time in court, (especially as teh evidence got eaten).
@Magisch It was not permitted/intentional on my part. By the time I looked round, there was just a cloud of flying feathers and the bird was already done for.

It's still abetting if you as much as don't report the crime.

I'm not a fan of pheasant anyway. They fly like the Spruce Goose and I've lost a screen once and headlamp twice to their near-useless takeoffs and pathetic climb-rate.

Let's start with re-tweeting: SO members work on eliminating wild life and the picture as evidence.

Sure, let's get more social groups against us. Why not?

@JohnDvorak Meh - it's rural reality. If B sees a bird/rabbit in range, he will hunt it and kill/eat if possible.

2:41 PM
@MartinJames you're more used to the climb-rate of a harrier?

The bird or the plane?

@rene I understand that hummingbirds can do VTOL. Pheasant are more VLLLLTO.

@MartinJames but, the same can be said about armed robberies :P

@JohnDvorak Bailey is rubbish with armed robberies. He can, however, hunt for food, I cannot change that:)
The weird thing is, he totally ignores cats, even kittens that would be a trivial kill.

@JourneymanGeek Ah.. I did wonder...

I don't normally pin my own posts, but this one time I will make an exception. THIS ONE TIME

Congrats Catija, well done, and I wish you well as you build up your severance package :)

We won't let you live it down even once :P

@Catija Hi!

meta.stackexchange.com/questions/313084/… (basically the russian CM's the new international team lead... though, I'm not sure what's left as far as international CMs are concerned)

Making them team lead requires them to do managerial tasks. That doesn't need people to manage but it does guarantee 40% or more of your time is wasted ...

3:28 PM
True

so... New associate... and they post a Meta Question. Change to ToS... and they use a blog post.
I will never understand them.

Blog posts don't allow feedback
That's the sole criterion

or there's a blog post later
but they've been saying for a while they prefer meta to blogs
anyway, now to bed. I might have a long day ahead in a good way. Potentially involving pizza, but certainly cake :)

> If you don't know how catija is pronounced, now would be a great time to ask.

3:42 PM
It's on my profile.

I noticed :)
Given the announcement stated the link to your profile and ended with this statement, it's quite funny (as in interesting)

@JohnDvorak you realize this criterion would be very bad in my example? ;_;

Why?

Most blog posts get feedback in the form of meta posts somewhere... so it's not quite "no feedback". It's also worth considering that moderating that feedback is easier on-site than in disqus or whatever the blog uses for commenting.

4:31 PM
I mean, no feedback that affects your MSE rep

You made history of being the first to be announced like this on MSE.
And you totally deserve it!

Thanks :D En-bluening will happen soon, I think. Waiting on the official announcement.

7:12 PM
@Catija You gotta first get through these small mountains of paperwork @TimPost mentioned?

Nah. Separate thing.

@Catija isn't that MSE post by @TimPost considered official announcement? Can it be more official than that? ;)

Have you looked at my account recently?

@Catija looking now

@Catija I see you joined all SE sites 12 days ago or so... did you know you're going to get hired back then so prepared yourself? :)
(I mean all sites you didn't have account in before, which weren't that much ;))

7:23 PM
I've been sitting on this since the beginning of July. :) Got the offer three weeks ago. :)

@Catija Your answers and patience are adorable.

@Shadow Charcoal participants are often members of many sites they don't actually participate in

too bad you can't be both blue and italic

I am joining a lot of sites, just because of checking smokey's reports, and maybe flagging

@Catija By the way, to answer the question you asked me back at the airport: I don't use scripts like FIRE in Charcoal because I'm uncomfortable with the idea of my reviews identified as being "from FIRE"
Back when I was a Wikipedia contributor, I used an automated tool called Twinkle, and adjusted a setting to prevent it from adding a link back to the tool's home page in my edit summaries.

7:27 PM
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog sure, but they don't join 60 sites at once.

Looks like we have some dissent:

A: Welcome Stack Overflow Valued Associate #599, Catherine Kuck AKA Catija!

Thorsten S.Unfortunately I must say that I am not so impressed by the choice...or saying it otherwise that SE/SO is exactly going to the way I feared it would to. Sorry, I cannot congratulate the choice. Reasons. There was an old Sci-Fi chat "Mos Eisley" who was the predecessor of "The Restaurant at the E...

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog ... That's true... but I joined the sites I hadn't joined through Charcoal because of the job, not Charcoal.
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog You don't come through being a mod on a site like IPS without singeing a few fingers. :) If there are things I can work on, it's good to know.

@Catija looks like it goes way before that.
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog she already got it...
(all sites)
I appreciate your honesty, that's really not trivial. To be honest, I think it's important to have opposition and know that not everything is perfect. So while I did downvote since I don't agree, I wanted you to know this answer is important and should indeed stay. — Shadow Wizard 2 mins ago
:)
(if we're into oneboxing)

@ShadowWizard Nothing I did caused Mos to implode. There were problems in there long before I used the room. The final straw involved joking about things that had no right to be joked about, and caused a bunch of suspensions for the people involved. There's a lot more to the story than what Thorsten's presenting.

@Catija And not only to that story ;) Just keep your standards, I like them :P

@Catija I think most of us know that

I don't recall that user being at all involved in js chat

@Sonic where you saw the SO job in Israel? I see here only two NY open positions.

I must say though the answer is a low blow and even for someone who wasn't on stack at the time and has only read up on the mos eisley incident years later out of curiosity it's painting CMs and people trying to get the toxic cesspit nature to stop as the villains unfairly

7:37 PM
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog oh. Well.. I'm really bad at marketing. Thought you meant programming position. :) (so, no... not considering.)
@Catija might be worth discussing later, probably in different room... but surely not now and not here. Cheers! :)

@Catija Will you still be in an active role moderating the two sites you were moderating before you gained employment?

@KevinB he's not, he just collected some stats to prove some point.

Hmm, I am at least supporting our marketing department at facebook as much as possible.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Nope. I'm not even on the mod list there any more. :)

CM can't be ordinary mod...
2

7:40 PM
@Catija I asked Shog, and he did say that employees can moderate sites purely through their staff rights during their spare time as an employee

SE can't and shouldn't control what their employees are doing in their spare time.
(As long as it's legit.)

This is unlike Wikipedia, which requires their employees to have separate accounts for work and non-work purposes

I've got 170+ sites that need help. Those two will always have a special place in my heart and I'll know them better than most of the other sites around but I'm going to have to divert my focus if I'm going to succeed at what I've been hired to do. :)
2

@Catija From what I could tell, you had your heart set on becoming a mod on MSE for a very long time. How are you feeling now that your wish (if it exists) came true?

It's like a ship's captain who has been promoted to manage all the ships.

7:43 PM
I think they call that person an admiral. ;)

@πάνταῥεῖ "KC BBQ sauce depends on this..."

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog I wanted to make sure that the CMs had the help that they needed. Me, personally, being a mod here was an interesting thought but I didn't think that they'd pick me over someone who'd been on MSE for much longer or had a ton more rep.

@Catija I mean, you did have a very high candidate score on MSE, 35/37 (if I remember correctly).

@Catija Admiral Catija.... sounds good! :D

7:46 PM
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Really important reason, yes. Do you consider this spam?

@πάνταῥεῖ Don't believe so

So why your message? (+ ping)

Hey, you have your diamond now :D

@πάνταῥεῖ Just a quote from the question that I considered funny

@Catija Think it's less a question of rep and more a question of style and personality

7:47 PM
@KevinB They're talking about Mos Eisley (a defunct room on SFF) and The Awkward Silence, the common room on IPS.

From the outside it looks like you can be what the CM team needs right now
(Totally not biased btw hides)

@πάνταῥεῖ The reply was intended to associate my message to yours. The ping was unintentional.

Right, i was referring to his reference to JS chat in the answer

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Just share it, no ping needed.

it was quite a different situation.

7:48 PM
@KevinB that's not related directly to @Catija but rather to the Welcome Wagon, which caused a big drop in chat activity.

@KevinB Ah, I missed that part. :)

(in which she's deeply involved)

@πάνταῥεῖ How am I supposed to make the association clear? Also, people have done it many times to my [cv-pls] messages.

@Magisch I hope so! :D And I'm looking forward to diving in.

^^ Just be fast enough :3 (I obviously failed to be now)

7:49 PM
still not convinced people taking their crude chat conversations elsewhere is a bad thing
I realize there needs to be a space for these, but chat.SE is probably not that space

@Magisch of course not, it's a good thing.

like, the welcome wagon is clearly what set the problem in motion for us, but there were... other events that were the reason people stopped participating. It was more in how flags were being handled and what tooling RO's have to deal with it. but that's all mostly cleared up now (aside from the tooling part)

As an IPS mod, we're gonna miss working with @Catija, but hopefully her work on the network sites will give us a chance to work together in a different way. I'm really excited to see how the let's-work-with-the-small-sites-and-grow-communities aspect of the ongoing push will turn out.

the root access model showcases how you can still have crude and personal conversations without having to have them on chat.SE

8:15 PM
so... he was kicked for being problematic, and after the kick, was no longer problematic? sounds like the right tool was used.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog The answer consists of three parts. Part two has as much to do with Catija as, say, me, and the other two parts are just complaining about moderation
I don't see why the answer would or would not indicate Catija would make a good CM
So I agree with the delete vote
The congrats answers don't have much substance to them, sure. But this answer actively derails from the conversation

@Catija Out of complete curiosity, if I may ask: You used a different last name in your emails toward me, than is mentioned in the post by Tim Post. Why is that?

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Multiple personalities...

Maybe the tavern isn't the place to ask this
could be personal

Probably pre-marriage and post-marriage names, one official and one in actual use.

@ShadowWizard witsec...

@canon huh?
The United States Federal Witness Protection Program, also known as the Witness Security Program or WITSEC, is a witness protection program administered by the United States Department of Justice and operated by the United States Marshals Service that is designed to protect threatened witnesses before, during, and after a trial. A few states, including California, Connecticut, Illinois, New York, Texas, and Washington D.C. have their own witness protection programs for crimes not covered by the federal program. The state-run programs provide less extensive protections than the federal program....
