gizmodo.com/5830354/… <-- looks like a September launch if all of the top brass at Apple are denying it. Anybody got a recent WSJ article on when the launch will be?

stackoverflow.com/users/109749/jcolebrand?tab=activity uhh, no I didn't. I only earned one badge

Sigh :-)
@zypher hello

@EvanCarroll Are you kidding? He's totally a socialist dictator.

National socialist, no doubt.

Socialism requires democracy and equality, two concepts you don't see on MSO.

@EvanCarroll In theory, socialism both requires and sustains equality. In practice, it requires class warfare and sustains class disparity

4:09 PM
Nine of ten stores I went to to get this unlock done were either "vaporware" or bought up by carriers. One would have helped possible.

@Shog9 This is why I prefer Fascism. That and they use hatchets. And the trains f*cking run on time.

@Shog9 really, please continue to blur the distinction between socialism and the state-capitalism of the USSR.

@EvanCarroll Damnit man when you talk like this you sound educated.

@EvanCarroll No need - they put "socialism" right in their name, just like the nazis, thus forever damning it to a decoration for totalitarian states

And, Iran, Iraq, and China all put Republic in their name, and North Korea "Democratic". Politics is not religion, you don't get to chose your label.

4:13 PM
The fact that anyone kept using it for anything else after the 1960s is a sad indictment of the poor quality of socialists we get around here

I'm pretty sure politics is religion.

Yes, Republic is also a synonym for "dictatorship"

You could make the same argument about Atheists.. Luckily, your argument has no merit.

The Constitution never outlawed the union of religion and state, they only said the state would never pick a specific religion.

@EvanCarroll I do though!

4:14 PM
Seeking to revive and destigmatize a term that was wrongly framed is honorable and noble: socialism and atheism included.
these terms are not dead just because the frame was hijacked.

So what I wanna know Evan is if you're gonna do what Atwood told you abit ago and start a new account?

Hey, if you want to spend your days carrying a torch for a word, that's your prerogative
but it's bad PR

@EvanCarroll kinda like "hacking"?

@jcolebrand I don't listen to Atwood anyway, I do what's right. Not what he tells me. Remember, I believe he is morally deprived and fearful of a real confrontation over the facts of his actions.

And this is where I get off. I'll be back around later guys.

4:15 PM
I submit myself only to a democratic system. We unfortunately don't have one here.

...

@Shog9 It's not bad PR. It's bad PR to lose the efforts of all the good-willed and hard working people that fought for these terms. And, it's a total capitulation to bad framing and ignorance to take such an action.

@EvanCarroll The good-willed and hard working people that fought for those terms were betrayed, sold down-river, and killed. I don't think we can harm them any further.

I think that's a pretty shallow statement worthy of scorn. Your conclusion that we should abandon a ship with virtuous men at the helm is ludicrous. Those men often lost their lives not to a bullet, but to an obsession over refining a theory that would make the world a better place. Their investments aren't lost if you can take the banner of public education and pick up where they left off.

@EvanCarroll The ship was boarded, the crew killed, the Jolly Roger raised, and a long career of murder and mayhem begun. The blood of martyrs that once stained those decks has been obliterated by that of the many victims broken on it since. You would cling to this ship for the symbolism it once held, ignoring the charnel that surrounds you?!

4:27 PM
this chat should be moved to the philosophy room.
Unless that was deleted, in which case this argument should go the same way.

You do these men no service if so. This ship sails into port with you at the helm and your cause is dead on arrival: the stench of blood precedes you, and no matter what good intentions you might have, no one of good character will stick around to listen.

You're holding the ship and the crew responsible for an external and unrelated problem -- that's not clinging to symbolism. That's refusing to take a selfish vacation with injustice.
If the men or the ideas were in any way responsible, abandoning the ship would be the worthy cause. I'm not on the ship of the USSR. I'm on the ship of democracy and equality.

The ship is inanimate, a creation of men now gone for a once-noble purpose that has been perverted and lost so many times it is now barely possible to consider without being tainted by the events that followed.

I won't get off the ship of equality just because some bastard attempted to hijack the concept and did something atrocious and unrelated under its banner.

For decades, the sight of this ship meant death. To ask those whose families died or suffered on its decks to forget this is to respect an object more than an idea.

4:32 PM
That was incoherent. Try again please.

If a rose by any other name would smell as sweet, then you would do well to pick an inoffensive name for your roses. Giving your sweetheart a vase of rapes would be a poor choice.

Maybe you should drop the metaphor you're getting distracted trying to establish a non-existent point as you rummage through poetic nonsense.

Maybe you should drop the metaphor you're getting distracted trying to establish a non-existent point as you rummage through poetic nonsense.
oh the irony

Then I'll return to my original point: "socialism" was a word coined to represent an idea. But that idea is no longer associated with the word.

So you suggest we forge a new word that has the same vulnerability -- to be framed wrongly by people adverse to those ideas. Except this new word will be unconnected with history in fact.
How about this. How about I start calling every dunce that responds to me without thinking a Shog9, and then I can force your hand into changing your own identity!

4:35 PM
@EvanCarroll Any word has this vulnerability. But only certain words have the history of death.
@EvanCarroll You could do this. If you were able to sufficiently publicize my foolishness, you might even be successful.

Not actually claiming that you have any resemblance to a dunce that responds without thinking. But, you don't have any say so in the matter, and justness of my framing you isn't being called into question. You just have to concede that at some point, if I'm successful it would be more expedient for you to just abandon the name.
Then, I can pick your new name and we can do it all over.
Socialism -> Liberalism -> Progressivism -> Liberalism -> Democratic Socialism
we can play this game all day long!

@EvanCarroll A more apt analogy would be for you to go out as "Evan Shog9 Carroll" and carry out acts of extreme thoughtlessness, such that the words "Evan" "Shog9" and "Carroll" all became tainted as a result

And, then to think it's defensible to request that you abandon your experience in fact with the name, your history, and good deeds for a new name. A new name that won't even be a blank slate the second someone murmurs, "this is just Shog9 re-branded." To which you'll have no credible defense for.

@EvanCarroll To request? If my name became synonymous with evil through no fault of my own, I might well regret that... But it wouldn't take a request to make me change it.
It is a meaningless name that I created to represent myself; if it no longer does the job, then I would discard it without hesitation.

Ok, well I regret socialism is linked, via ignorance, to the atrocities of the USSR. I don't justify the USSR, and I regret some people, stupid ignorant näive people, think they're synonymous. However, I think socialism as a general concept has something to offer today; and, I'm not going to call it something else just to appease a dunderhead.
So, I regret the link that has no merit and is the result of malicious framing. But, I deny your request to change the name because of faulty link.

4:50 PM
We use this crude language because we lack the ability to communicate ideas without it. And over time, the language itself takes on an elevated status in our minds; the sounds, the little black symbols, we forget where the idea ends and the symbol begins, to the point where some symbols remain holy long after the idea has been forgotten... But the symbol is but a tool, like the hammer or the sickle - once broken and dull beyond repair, they should be discarded and replaced.

Go for it, call yourself a Bright if you'd like. Working with a virgin term loses the past, admits defeat on the frame, and results in another whole bucket of detriments that I'd rather not accept.
None of this changes the fact that Jeff Atwood is most certainly not a socialist.

He's the Stalin of Q&A, socialism incarnate!

A: What can I do when getting "Sorry, we are no longer accepting questions from this account"?

Evan CarrollI don't think this policy is fair. I've recently found myself unbanned after a full year of being wrongfully banned for something I never did. Now I find that I can't ask questions because after I was banned for a year a policy was implemented that would ensure that upon my ban being lifted, I'd...

5:26 PM
Interesting but I wonder what will they do about the add-ons.

5:51 PM
ya know what? f*ck you visual studio.
Oh, and for the record, I've been waiting on the task to end now for about five minutes

6:05 PM
The hell are people doing talking politics in here.
I leave my libertarianism at home, keep your socialism in your central planning committee.
Also, the concept doesn't apply to websites at all. Participation in them is voluntary.
Maybe someone should make a "crappy Jeff Atwood analogies" room and discuss those sorts of things there.

lol
You tell 'em!

6:35 PM
My phone has been dropping calls at least twice per conversation lately >:(

Good luck complaining to the provider about it.

Ha.

Speaking of complaining, I sure wish my neighbor would take their kids to an actual playground.

Maybe you shouldn't be working from the swing set today.

hehe
I must say, that is a good case for a dedicated office or at least renting some co-working space.

6:43 PM
My basement is quiet today.
As every day.
Except for that entire year where they were building houses around me.
That wasn't quiet.
My house is 40 years older than anything else on the block. Huzzah.

6:56 PM
heh

7:45 PM
Hola, anyone around?

Nah

We generally hide about this time every day

I don't see anyone.

What does "Out of votes - you may not vote on this user any more today." mean?
It looks like I'm out of votes, but what is the "this user" but about?

Are they just hard and fast preventing upvote/downvote abuse? Interesting...

Q: AJAX help for amateur PHP developer using sajax

WikkiI have a php application that scraps web site content and stores data into text file on server. I have all the functions written in functions.php. There is a function which when called does all the job and calls many other functions within the same functions.php. How ever when i try to invoke t...

@Moshe Normal votes or are you approving edits?

@mmyers Approving edits.

That's normal then.

pats himself on the back for this unmaintainable line of code:
$(this).parent().parent().attr('colspan', 1).next().attr('colspan', 1).show();

@mootinator I like that.

8:03 PM
Changed .show() to .fadeIn().find('input').focus(); That's 100 times nicer to use now.

lmao

<-- Trying to find a nice way to keep a rate hidden except when someone wants to override it.
So, now if they type @ while while filling in a quantity that lovely jQuery runs.

@mmyers But I'm confused by that text. What does "this user" have to do with it?

@Moshe you were approving edits, right?

@jcolebrand Yes.

8:06 PM
There is an imposed system edit whereby you can only approve so many of a user's edits in one day.
Think of it as anti-fraud

It's another anti-gaming measure. Edits give reputation so the number you can approve of one user is limited.

You do realize that the first thousand edits earn you +2 apiece, right?

@jcolebrand Yea, I didn't pay attention to who posted the edit. I just look at the quality of it.
Maybe that's a bad idea though.

Ok, well they do for you ;)

Got it now. Thanks.

w00t! Google buys Motorola! Awesome!

@Shog9 that's so four hours ago. Please quit being so ... proletariat

I've been gone.

Whyever would you do that???
Did you tell someone before you left!

You're boring. I'm busy dreaming of unlocked Motorola phones. They're dancing in my head. Like sugarplums. But tastier.

@Shog9 #LazyWeb where's the post on metaso about the privilege levels for each site stage
nm, random already did it

I really wanna stab someone now
I'm sending in "07/29/2011 12:12:12"

y u no like [things that resemble ISO dates]? Also, does that mean the error message has a different date than the one you sent, or?

10:28 PM
I need to stay away from databases for the rest of the day, I think.
I had a near miss with our production Fogbugz database, and unintentionally clobbered some data on a staging server.

@TimStone no, I can't copy-paste
It's like a phsyical deformity of my brain. Please don't laugh at me :p (you bastards!)

@mootinator Whoops :o

DROP Database FogBugz Waaaitaminute, what server am I connected to? O_o.

@mootinator lmao
