@HansPassant We have two different versions running. One auto-pops the content bubble. It results in 400% more traffic to the new feature. It is also WAY more obvious what you need to do to dismiss it. So, overall it's better UX. Looks like you're seeing the more passive version. — Joe Friend ♦ 7 hours ago

Joe considers a modal that covers the main content as you scroll as the better option. Was he a PM at Quora previously?

"We've covered answers by a link to sign-up page and hey, 400% more traffic there".

I like the way Gabe opened his announcement.

Meta... wassup!!
I can have different profile pic on SU than Politics, correct?
Curious is anyone knew or send me a starting point link

user315433
You can have everything different on different sites. Edit and save the changes only for the current site.

I started with my profile pic on politics but after I saved it changed on SU too??

user315433
3:12 AM
So you saved it for all communities. Don't do that.

I must have overlooked something or just dummy 101 novice rookie alert

user315433
There are two ways to save, look for one that's less obvious.

I'm looking now

user315433

I only see Save from that tab
Google Chrome
Does that matter

user315433

It doesn't. What is next to "save" button at the bottom of that page?

user315433
The screenshot isn't useful.

So true... lol
Appreciate your time!
I sign on with my Gmail, could that be why?

user315433
The "save for this site only" option does not become a button until you first use it as a plain link. After that the site gets the idea that this is something you may want to do, and offers both options as buttons.

user315433
Balancing "offer an option" with "don't confuse users".

I'm totally confused and I apologize; seems like it should be simple and I could have swore I've seen that option before too.
@Michelle What do you mean by "does not become a button until you first use it as a plain link"?

Your screenshot... do you see the link "customize your profile just on this community" there? Click that, if this is what you want to do.

Du'oh!!! yA HA YA HA YA HA!!!
Thank ya!! Thank ya very much!!
Testing now to confirm and validate!

Probably with a calculator to count the hats you earned.

Or to predict how many hats you should have, based on the age of your account and the reputation.

Someone had a brilliant idea: since there is no SU in Japanese, let's translate existing answers to Japanese and post them along the original answers. Interesting.

Does it make sense for SE favorites to be public? Compare to similar functionality on Wikipedia: "No users, not even administrators, can tell what is in your watchlist, or who is watching any particular page. Publicly available database dumps do not include this information either."

user315433
It may not seem like a problem for programming questions, but in the Workplace territory the fact that someone is interested in X can be revealing.

user315433
People use "favorite" for all kinds of things, Hashim. I've seen folks use it as a jury-rigged "social network" wherein they favorite everything their friends post and expect them to do likewise - since it's public (unlike voting) it's possible to exert social pressure to "enforce" this sort of reciprocation (or even fealty). Are we gonna invest time building out features that make such uses better? Hell no! Nor is it worth dev time to build out a crappy replacement for your browser's bookmark feature, particularly when there are so many critical features left unimplemented. — Shog9 ♦ Sep 19 at 0:00

user315433
Weird. Also wouldn't happen (as much) if favorites were not public.

user315433
The search parameter infavorites:userId relies on this, I but can't imagine it being used for any good when userId is not yours. I tried it once by making Normal Bot favorite thousands of questions to mark "possibly interesting" ones, as a surrogate for custom question filter. Quite pointless.

Fred AndersonWhenever you come across a mother bear with Cubs always pick up a cub and pet it, this builds trust with the mother.
