(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ So I recently learned that's a table flip and not a field goal celebration. Suddenly a lot of things make a lot more sense.

Eyeballing the salaries on jobs in my area, I think they are realistic and well within the range predicted by the calculator.

I'm inclined to migrate this to the main meta.SE

Q: Is there a list of the most up voted questions?

DavidG25Looking for a list of questions with the most upvotes. Like most up voted questions of the day, week, month, all time. Does this exist?

user315433
Why not just answer it there? I can do it.

2:47 AM
@Michelle We both did it. This is a general question. It applies to all stacks. That's why I'd like to migrate it to the general meta.

user315433
The thing is, next time an EE user has the same question and looks at the EE meta... they'll ask again because this post won't be there.

user315433
Will you migrate that one too?

One for you. One for us. I'll keep the second one and post a link to meta.SE .

Next Town Hall: Salary calculator, or maybe New Top Bar
Anyway, there's a "New" button on SO Top bar that links to... the calculator. Will we expect that "New" button on other sites when there's a new... feature?

@Elias There was some discussion of using the new new feature feature to announce the new feature feature, but that seemed redundant.

On MSE, maybe it can link to Recent feature changes post.
wait... wrong post... should be the other one from CM
Ergh, I see Kasra working on New Tob Par related meta posts...

5:02 AM
@Shog9 I reckon that's also largely cultural
In germany for instance a lot of employers prohibit discussion of salary and will only bring it up at the very end if interviewing somewhere with the rationale that sunk cost fallacy might cause people to work for less.

user202362

why the NEW salary calc is shown to me?
I am not from US UK FR CA or any listed countries

@redhand Because they don't have a mechanism to show a thing only for certain countries, methinks

@Magisch I don't care about that. I don't want to see stuff that doesn't matter for me
@Magisch are you really enjoying that thing?
after typing all details, show the error message?

I'm from germany, so it works for me
I guess

also it missing lot's of technologies
@Magisch did you checked it?

@redhand Yeah, it's not very accurate
Income disparity between country <-> city is well over 50% here depending on where exactly you live
I could be making twice of what I do now and would be worse off if I had to live in a city for it

@Elias and actually working on it I suppose. The mod-stuff moved where it should be.

@JourneymanGeek sorry, were you asking this because of my message about LegendOfEquestria?

nope, that was just a self made rant sorry. LoE is a fan made "mmorpg" attempt... some time ago they had some serious problems after a cyberattack.

@Derpy how do you make a mlp mmorpg?

@Magisch horses.

What are you doing in there? singing for level ups?
or is this some incredibly contrived way to turn mlp into a fantasy combat mmo?

secretly kill your enemies and render them down into horse glue cutie marks

@Magisch first, there are multiple rpg boardgame that focus their rules around story more than around combat. Even FATE is more focused on character interaction than on actual fighting.

Yeah but MMORPG in the sense of the world is a mass multiplayer combat arena
the "rpg" in that word is like 99% window dressing
Like WoW got shit back then for not being hardcore and combat focused enough

that's because you only played the WoW like stuff that is just centered around "get them to play everyday for at least 10h"

11:40 AM
That's what an MMORPG is
A game that isn't that isn't an MMORPG. It's not necessarily bad, but it's not an MMORPG

Sorry, I will have to disagree. To me, Ultima Online was far more of a mmoRPG than WoW will ever be.

In the same way that not everything involving an arena and multiple players is a MOBA

The October Draconids, in the past also unofficially known as the Giacobinids, are a meteor shower whose parent body is the periodic comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner. They are named after the constellation Draco, where they seemingly come from. Almost all meteors which fall towards Earth ablate long before reaching its surface. The Draconids are best viewed after sunset in an area with a clear dark sky. The 1933 and 1946 Draconids had Zenithal Hourly Rates of thousands of meteors visible per hour, among the most impressive meteor storms of the 20th century. Guys, it's time to talk about sunsetting the new topbar.

@redhand I believe it is the same green it has been. If you think the contrast is bad, there's the meta announcement - post an answer with that feedback (as requested there).
@redhand man, you are lagging like crazy...

Welp
@Oded You are just coasting on the ironic quips today eh :D

@Oded I am saying that in SO, with the light BG, the green is perfect. but here, both BG and FG are dark colors.

possible solutions 1. Change the top bar bg color -> bad idea.

See how it is not in the sentence, and on a separate line, and in all caps? Maybe it doesn't belong there.

At least |||≡||| is artistic. This new button just feels like seeing a dog inside of a tree instead of a cat. Or, like, a giraffe inside the gorilla cage. Or, a 10 foot wave in a pond. Or, a break statement outside of a loop. Or, grass on the moon. Or, a sand storm in Hawaii. Or, you get the point. It doesn't belong there.

How many of you got the open on load version? I was in the New button in the topbar group and it hasn't bothered me much. (I wish it would go away after I visit the target link, however.)
I don't know why we are testing open on load. That doesn't seem appropriate ever.

I was in the had to click group
But I'm not bothered by it at all. I clicked it, calculated my salary when I would move to Germany, concluded it wasn't enough and went on with my life.

I didn't click the new button. I didn't realize it was a button. I visited the page via one of the community bulletin posts

how close to accurate is the salary calculator?

@NVZ From germany I can say it's not for me
I live in a rural area there is no way to get even 25th percentile on the calc for what I do

@NVZ Given it's designed by a company that is trying to get more people to apply for new jobs, I don't see a reason why it would be accurate.

> This salary calculator is based on the comprehensive data from the Stack Overflow Developer Survey.
Julia Silge on September 19, 2017

Today, we launched the Stack Overflow Salary Calculator, a tool that allows developers and employers to find typical salaries based on experience level, location, specific technologies, and education.

We did this because we believe developers should be empowered with more information around job searches, careers, and salary. In fact, we know that developers want more salary information to make better choices about their careers; we have seen that ads for Stack Overflow Jobs that include salary information get 75% more clicks than ads without salary information. …

7:38 PM
Ah, so it's based on polling
have to draw a line somewhere and say, I trust everything beyond this point, eh?

Is it by design that the extra duplicates that get added after I dupe hammered don't get added to the linked section in the sidebar? Example

@Michelle whoa... only one week suspension for such abuse of power... Shog is really too good. IMO permanent ban should be placed. (e.g. until 2200)
We don't need such stupid people in Stack Overflow.
(and of course he used a script)

There seems to be a rather strong theme of 14 seconds on each edit.
With 5 minute breaks at times.

Probably to evade rate limiting or IP banning
(or auto detection)
I take my words back, that one is smart. But in a bad way. Those bring tons of harm.

I am not aware of the borders for detection. It does seem that type of stepped approach would be good at bypassing them though.

Indeed.

user315433
They do have a lot of answers, hence rep. So it's not all bad. And in any event, not as damaging as, say, a mod merging [java] and [javascript] tags. (Hypothetically speaking).

10:00 PM
heh, that would be one helluva april fools

It's abuse of power in the worst way that can be.
Ideally, there could have been a way to take away edit powers instead of total suspension, but SE isn't there yet.
Let them ask, answer, etc, but don't let them edit anymore.

user315433
Side benefit: we no longer need a calculator to count the number of links to the salary calculator.

It's everywhere, yeah.

Nicely done.
How did you collect the ID of all posts in need of the retagging?

SQL + JavaScript
ad-hoc
sorta tested
ish

You screen scraped that user's revisions... ?

10:46 PM
diff the old and new revisions, compare to current revision, update where needed and possible.
@ShaWizDowArd oh lord no. That would've taken ages.

The things CM's do these days.... lol

select h1.Text BeforeTags, h2.Text AfterTags, p.Tags CurrentTags, h1.PostId
from PostHistory h1
join PostHistory h2 on h2.PostId=h1.PostId
  and h2.UserId=[baduser]
  and h2.CreationDate > h1.CreationDate
  and h2.PostHistoryTypeId=6
  and h2.CreationDate > getdate()-90
join Posts p on p.Id=h1.PostId
where
h1.PostHistoryTypeId in (3,6)
and not exists (select 1 from PostHistory where PostHistoryTypeId=6 and PostId=h1.PostId and CreationDate > h1.CreationDate and CreationDate < h2.CreationDate)

So why JS?

because it's easier than SQL?

@Shog9 that's for sure, but only jQuery ;)

10:47 PM
var allAdded = {},
   allRemoved = {},
   allEdits = [];
tagEdits.then(function(results)
{
   for (let row of results[0].rows)
   {
      let BeforeTags = row[0].split('|').filter(v => v.length),
      AfterTags = row[1].split('|').filter(v => v.length),
      CurrentTags = row[2].split('|').filter(v => v.length),
      PostId = +row[3],
      added = AfterTags.filter(t => !BeforeTags.find(t2 => t === t2)),
      removed = BeforeTags.filter(t => !AfterTags.find(t2 => t === t2));
      for (let t of added) allAdded[t] = 1 + (allAdded[t]||0);
That gave me pretty much everything I needed
I'm not much of a SQL user. It'd have probably taken me all morning just to figure out how to split tags.
(And yes, I know the query catches some posts twice when they're retagged multiple times. I wrote this on the fly and didn't particularly care about edge-cases)

Well, you could write some custom function in SQL, probably, but yeah... easier with something you're already familiar with. :)

If I wanted to re-implement string handling basics, I'd use C - at least then I'd have pointers to work with.

How you learned JS? @Shog
(and when?)

uh...

Secret?

You weren't a developer before being CM...

A: Scrolling Overflowed DIVs with JavaScript

Shog9scrollHeight should be the total height of content. scrollTop specifies the pixel offset into that content to be displayed at the top of the element's client area. So you really want (still using jQuery): $("#thediv").each( function() { // certain browsers have a bug such that scrollHeight ...

First JS answer ^

Gonna say, back around 2000, I was spending a lot of late nights in a crappy call-center job on NT workstations configured to run a terminal emulator, Outlook, Notepad, and Internet Explorer.

lol reminds me of myself.... back in 2000 I learned classic ASP from a book while working as a security guard, in the night shifts.

So out of boredom, I'd wrote code in Notepad and configure IE's Active Desktop integration (essentially, a web page as wallpaper) to run it for the next person to log into the terminal.

JS came later, much later.
It was books, bamba, and chocolate.

10:58 PM
@ShaWizDowArd yes, but not web. I wrote C++ / C# / VB for desktop apps. The only web apps I worked on were internal tools for bug tracking and triaging crash reports.
Big piles of regexs to scrape the output of cdb and sosex run against crash dumps

@Shog9 so why didn't you become a developer?

Also some SQL. But the less said about that the better.
@ShaWizDowArd After 10 years, I was bored with it. Developers have to listen to user complaints and fix things. CMs can complain and don't have to fix things.
No matter how many things you fix, there are always more complaints.

@Shog9 in SE developers don't have to listen, just fix. No?

You'd have to ask one of 'em...
Oh, you mean why didn't I join SE as a dev?

@Shog9 yup

11:01 PM
Jeff asked me to join as a CM

You know it's never too late... ;)

well... "technical evangelist" or some such was the original request. Which became "community coordinator" then CM

@Shog9 hehe, yeah this makes sense.
But you kept sharpening your skills, at least in JS which is good.

Not really; I pretty much avoided programming entirely for the first few years I was here out of concern that I'd end up just fixing bugs all day.
But, it's a useful thing to keep in your back pocket for mornings like this one.

hehe
You could also ask one of the developers to do that, I guess...

11:05 PM
If I hadn't had Jarrod's retag tool ready at hand, I would've - that'd have taken me the better part of a month to do by hand.
even scripted

Is there "useful tools" library? :)

I have my own tools for pulling query results into JavaScript, analyzing votes, flags, etc.

@Shog9 lol, mean internal for things like what you used. :D

there's... like, a list of routes
and Github Enterprise
and a subdirectory on my laptop full of bits and pieces of script
with no particularly consistent naming convention

As long as you find you need guess it's fine. I also got directory full "bits and pieces of script", though I haven't touched it for years...
