supercobraDoes any body knows a Java equivalent of node.js? Thanks!

Q: How would I limit upload speed from the server in node.js?

drachensternHow would I limit upload speed from the server in node.js? Is this even an option?

Well, I guess I'll try this thing called "getting stuff done" again tomorrow ;)

@drachenstern Have you started playing around with node.js?

yes
and I am loving it so far

Cool. It's definitely on my list. Right now I'm messing around with Conky and some Python.

I'm probably doing it wrong
I'm not about using toolkits and module stacks if I don't know what the underlying things do
so I'm writing a lot of stuff from scratch
like I said, probably doing it wrong, but it works for me
once I learn how those things work, I'll trust them more

Well, the best way to learn is usually to try stuff, even if you're doing it wrong.

4:59 AM
Yup

7 hours later…

@YiJiang you around?
or if there's any other CSS mastermind - is there a CSS way to force what comes after a span on a new line?

@badpssockpuppet Yeah?

I thought clear:both; but nope. I guess it needs to be used on something floating.

@badpssockpuppet What do you mean by that?

basically I have something like this:
<span>foo<br/></span><span>bar</span>
and I'm trying to make it so that it effectively acts like:
<span>foo</span><br/><span>bar</span>

Eh... is there any more text after that <br />?

12:30 PM
because if the <br/> is inside the <span> stuff like border-top-right-radius:7px on the span breaks.

I'm not even sure if a <br /> inside a span is valid

@YiJiang No, that <br/> is at the very end of that span, always, and there's exactly one.
You can see it in action on the health and mana bars of tiles.crawl.develz.org/#watch-bp
I have:
/* this doesn't work because <br/>s are placed in the <span/>s. Lame */
#stats .bg8 {
  border-top-right-radius: 7px;
  border-bottom-right-radius: 7px;
}

/* hence the following two rules attempting to hack that into submission. */

#stats .bg8 {
  clear:both;
}

#stats .bg8 br {
  display:none;
}
more or less obviously, clear:both is ineffective.
@YiJiang It was a suspension, not an ip ban, and mods can still suspend themselves :P
I think that web page's markup crashed Yi Jiang.
Ah well.

No, still here
Just that I had to pop open Chrome to see the thing working because Firefox 4 doesn't support WebSockets any more

@YiJiang interesting...
It's an HTML port of a console game, so the whole markup isn't exactly what you'd call semantic.

1:34 PM
@badpssockpuppet: and @balpha: I need your Help , In stack Overflow chat rooms, there are plenty of rooms for Android, Iphone, i was confused why too many rooms for same language, can you pls take any action,Thanks in Advance
@balpha: and @Nyuszika7H: and @GeorgeMarian: and @drachenstern: @TimStone: and @TylerChacha: I m Able to See room for Android Help ,Android Assistance and Apple and Iphone/Ipad and Mobile Application Development, i was confused why so much of rooms, i think we can merge those rooms in to Single One, am i right or wrong guys
@badpssockpuppet: and @balpha: My Humble request is why cannot we merge the Duplicate Rooms such as MobileApplication Developement room and Apple room to IPhone/Ipad Room

4 hours later…
5:52 PM
@SankarGanesh People are pretty much allowed to make rooms whenever they want; those rooms are probably owned by different people, so you can't just delete them. You could ask the owners about merging them, maybe they'll want to

6:11 PM
@MichaelMrozek Nevermind there's not really a "merge chatroom" button.

@badpssockpuppet Well, there's a "delete chatroom" button :)

Basically one room owner has to freeze either side putting a link to the other.
@MichaelMrozek mods only I believe?
Yep, it's mods only
...or perhaps you need 10k rep.
@MichaelMrozek See if you have the button here: chat.meta.stackoverflow.com/rooms/info/379/…

It's mod only

Wes
7:05 PM
Hi anyone there?

yep

Wes
I was going to ask a question on SO "How can you make a cluster run a task only once?" It says my question is subjective and probably will be closed?
Is that not a valid question?

@Wes who says?
Ohh
Whe you put that title in?

Wes
yeah

Try this inted
Make a cluster run a task only once?
But if the question is good don't worry about it
it doesn't block you from asking
It is just a warning
"How can you make" is a typical starter for bad question I guess

Wes
7:09 PM
okay thanks

@Wes np!

Wes
@Trufa I don't think its a bad question?

@Wes It is an automated process based on heuristics
it could of course be wrong
but I haven't read the question...

Wes
No no question I mean the title isn't a subjective question in my opinion
Would it be better suited to SU. I mean my implementation will be in java, but the abstract question may be better suited there.

The question title isn't subjective. SEI has defined a list of words that when usually used in a title, the questions get closed as subjective. So they compare the proposed title against the list of words, and if any are in the list, the message is shown.
Alternate titles for this particular question are: "Enforcing only one run of a task on a cluster" or "Given a cluster, run a task only once" or something like that. Totally removing the "how do I" from it.
But the title as proposed is apropos. Run with it.

7:22 PM
a reddit post on backwards smileys: reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/hb7mv/… pinging @rchern just for fun.

Wes
@drachenstern thanks

@Fosco you know... I had a discussion about this with @RebeccaChernoff

Wes
The problems with the alternatives I can find is their not questions.
Is it possible for one to schedule a task to only run once on a cluster?
@Fosco never seen those smilies or at least haven't seen them in 11 years

hmm

Apr 21 at 3:24, by Trufa
@RebeccaChernoff it always puzzles me why some orient the smileys like this (:

7:34 PM
@Wes define cluster

Wes
For this loosly based question it is a bunch of servers behind a load balancer that have distributed sessions and run the exact same application.

How do you manage task synchronicity now?

Wes
Actually this is abstract Its not an issue in my current workplace and it was in my previous workplace. However it is a subject that intrests me especially as it must be a solved problem with best practice behind it.
In my previous workspace we just turned off one side of the split network (that tempoary solution lasted about eight months)
Not exactly idea. The second server was set as non automatic failover only.

Q: How can you make a cluster run a task only once?

WesIf you had a task that you wanted to run only once on a cluster of servers, at a regular interval what would be the best way of achieving this? The definition of cluster in this case is 2 or more identical servers with distributed sessions sitting behind a load balancer. Use Case: You have a tas...

Thats the question

Wes
8:09 PM
@drachenstern How's your website comming along?

It comes
I've been mostly doing some experimental stuff in node so I know what my limits are and such, and I've been working on figuring out what routing engine I like best
I'm going to do something like Sinatra, but I'm not sure if I like Journey or if I'm going to do something based on roundabout or what

Wes
:) Cool

and for anybody who hasn't spent an afternoon reading about node, those are probably nonsensical names :p

Wes
Googleing right now.
Started typing cool before I saw the last line

Also, I've toyed with the thought of going full express but I haven't decided to pull that trigger

Wes
8:12 PM
Your going with ruby then? Thought you came from a .net shop

Something about wanting to have a richer understanding of the underlying before moving forward full steam on a bigger framework in the middle
no, I'm going with node.js
I do come from a .net shop. This will make me a stronger coder all around

Wes
sinatrarb.com/intro this sinatra?

yes, "like Sinatra"

Wes
Can't find the other names
Why javascript?
just curious

because I like writing in javascript for the browser
I want to keep a consistent codebase in both sides
and I think that node gives me a scalable base should this actually become a very viable project
And like I said, it'll make me a better coder in the long run

Wes
8:20 PM
I don't know about ECMAScript to be honest. Lack of typing puts me off.

well, it is something you have to be concerned about
but there's something freeing to it
one of the best parts is that if I need to add a new property for a specific bit of code, I can just add it

Wes
Yeah. I know I've just been doing java for too long now.
There is something to say for duck typing.
That question didn't go down too well I think. I've had two favs two upvotes and no replies or comments.

Just means that you asked it on a Saturday morning
the network is notoriously slow on a Saturday

Wes
But its 10:25 pm

And there you show that you're not in the US :p
also, morning was a variable term

Wes
8:26 PM
hahaha. Nope not in the US.
Also I know that most of the users are.
Its not really morning though is it?

Wes
8:58 PM
Wheres the community wiki check-box gone. Mostly curiosity

They decided to remove that from the ability of the community
you can either get a mod to do it for you, or you can edit (I think 20 times) or have 15+ answers get provided to a question.

Wes
9:14 PM
Didn't realise the number of answers forced it.
Seems a little arbitrary

@Wes there is a point where the answers arn't really adding anything new in a great majority of the cases

Yeah, once you pass about 15 answers, it's time to start improving the existing answers

Wes
Oh okay I suppose that makes sense.

9:37 PM
LOL I got an email about a new cigar release: You gotta check it out: cigarsinternational.com/html/spec_event.asp
Not so much for the cigars, but for the name of the brand and the name of the various sizes.

That actually sounds like a good blend, and I firmly believe Kinky is on to something in the first place
he might be a little kooky, but I like that.

Wes
@GeorgeMarian your not advertising tobacco now are you ;-)

I certainly like the look of the wrapper. If I hadn't already ordered a bunch of cigars I would try a box.
@Wes No, of course not. I'm one of the few cigar nuts in here. But, I just couldn't resist sharing this kooky brand.

Wes
Sorry I was just joking. I don't know much about cigars

Hehe. Yeah, I know you were. That's the best i could come up with in response. I'll blame the fact that I just woke up. :)

9:42 PM
I'm almost certain that I misused possessive form in this question title stackoverflow.com/questions/6004943/… Can someone help to phrase this correctly?

Wes
@AlexandreJasmin I wouldn't know how to fix it up.

@AlexandreJasmin I don't see anything worn with the wording. (Mind you, I did just wake up.)

Wes
@GeorgeMarian whats the time in your current timezone

Almost 3 PM.
I'm serious about Sleep-In Saturday. ;)

Wes
Wow
Haven't done that in years

9:51 PM
That question title is splendid
damn you daily vote limit

@Wes I had some problems sleeping during the week. I woke up at about 1-2 am on two occasions and couldn't get back to sleep. So, I basically made up on some lost sleep. Only several more years of lost sleep to go. ;)

Wes
@drachenstern which question title?
@GeorgeMarian that really sucks I hate when my sleep is disturbed.

21 mins ago, by Alexandre Jasmin
I'm almost certain that I misused possessive form in this question title http://stackoverflow.com/questions/6004943/are-concurrent-classes-provided-by-the-jdk-required-to-use-their-instances-own-i Can someone help to phrase this correctly?
"I think I wrote the title wrong, can you help me make it right"

10:10 PM

Wes
I uppvoted it
Still no responses. I'm not used to getting no responses in this time period. It must be at least an hour.
Maybe should have gone on SU I'm not sure.

@drachenstern I concede this may be bad etiquette.

Wes
@AlexandreJasmin he's praising your question title.
Sorry wrong link. Does anyone understand what this guy wants at the moment stackoverflow.com/questions/6004954/what-is-this-line-doing/… see comments thread.

10:27 PM
@Wes @drachenstern Sorry I missed that
I hate this keyboard with a "small" enter key. I keep submitting a comment each time I want to hold the right shift key.

Wes
Thats annoying. Is it a laptop?
Guys if you get no responses within 2 hours on SO would you edit the question to give a bump?

I have a compact, laptop style keyboard with the 10-key on the left. I sometimes hit the enter key ont he the 10-key by mistake. lol

Wes
The numeric keypad is on the left?

@Wes I think you figured it out. I'm guessing his problem is that the button isn't name ourButton. Maybe due to a mispelling like ourButon.

Wes
10:35 PM
He accepted my answer and then put a one last thing in the comments problem is I don't understand the 1 last thing.

OH, heh. I forgot to check the comments.
Well, I'm not about to follow the link. However, it seems that the "our-other-brands" page (or w/e) isn't staying open. I'd assume it has to do with something not posted in the question.

Wes
Okay fair enough. I've asked for clarification maybe I should prompt him to open a new question

Yeah, that seems unrelated to this question. It would have to be with w/e "our-other-brands" is doing. This bit of code is basically a router.

Wes
Yeah thats what I thought. I didn't look at the page to be honest when I answered only when he was asking a further question
Btw does an accept show as a vote in your reputation tab? I'm seeing +25 two votes

Yeah.

Wes
10:44 PM
but surely thats 1 vote and one accept

So, I bought these pretty decent digital monitor speakers. Wouldn't you know it? Now I will need to get a crossover and sub-woofer. LOL

Wes
We have some Absolute 4p's here which are pretty good. No woofer
@drachenstern whats funny?

his need to purchase the crossover and sub-woofer
look at the end of :622299 and the beginning of :622300

The low-end is a bit muddy. Not that I expected it to be otherwise.

Wes
10:50 PM
@drachenstern how?

@Wes you don't have the userscript installed apparently

I also need something slightly taller to lift the speakers up to ear-height. I have 'em sitting on cigar boxes right now, but they're not tall enough.

do you use chrome?
If it asks you to install a userscript say continue

Wes
using Fx
for some reason enter is not sending at the moment

However, if it asks you to save the file, you don't have a userscript capable browser, and need to either install chrome or greasemonkey
my advice, is to install chrome
Don't misunderstand me, I have Fx as well

Wes
10:52 PM
Yeah I have installed but never liked it

Why did you not like it?

Wes
and I never installed greasemonkey

You must enumerate that for me
I can appreciate not installing greasemonkey

Wes
I don't like the Firebug like debugger. and I use firebug a lot
I find it runs like a dog too

then you're doing something odd
WHAT
Chrome is slower than Firefox on your system?
Is that what you're telling me?
Am I understanding this correctly? I must refuse to believe that ...

Wes
10:54 PM
yeah on a single core system
chrome feels slower

I'm using Chrome on a single core system atm as well (XP no less) and it's MUCH faster than Fx

Wes
I don't like the start page. Nor the minimal interface.
Startup time I do like

but I admit freely that the debugger isn't as good as firefox's
what about the minimal interface don't you like?
and you don't have to use that start page

Wes
Just never like it really. always felt odd. Mostly I tried it when they first released it
then it was too slow and didn't ever go back to using it.
It may have even been a beta (assuming they first released a beta)

Ah, so that sounds a lot like "I refuse to drive a modern sports car because the first car I drove was a pinto and it was horrid"
additionally, complaining that a beta gave you a bad taste of the final product of several generations later ...
and you're a software developer ...
Let me say it like this:

Wes
10:57 PM
The only reason I use firefox is firebug. which I use on nearly every website I visit
Also who cares it gets the job done.

ROOM - QUICK POLL -- WHAT BROWSER ARE YOU USING RIGHT NOW TO CHAT?

Chrome has that built-in.
@drachenstern For chat, I use Chrome (Chromium).

why do you use it on nearly every website you visit?

I use Friefox because I have better control over JavaScript with NoScript.

Wes
Cause I look how things are done.

10:59 PM
Plus, there are some things about Chrome that just drives me nuts.

Wes
What scripts are being called.

so far I have 4 chrome and 1 firefox on the three rooms I'm in.
obviously response has been slow on my request

Wes
@drachenstern also I have a bunch of favourite firefox extensions I use. There's not many people here

let me ask on noon on monday

Wes
11:00 PM
btw I got a 4-4 on that github

@Wes I use a lot of Fx extensions too. For things like twitter and debugging.

Wes
404 I mean
eugh twitter :P

that's odd (the 404)
github.com/rchern/StackExchangeScripts/blob/master/… <-- click the "raw" on the mid-right
now 5 chrome, 1 Fx

Wes
Well I see the js.

So anyways
the point was to install the US and since you don't want to use a quality browser in this modern age :p

Wes
11:02 PM
Hell I don't even like technology
being honest

What do you do during the day again?

Wes
Oh I write software, and supervise other developers.
And in my spare time I read about software and software development quite a lot. But technology itself I don't like. E.g. smart phones

and you don't like technology ...

@Wes You Luddite. ;)

that seems to be such a contradiction

Wes
11:05 PM
I like software if that helps
okay I better go before I get attacked.

Wes
At least I don't use ie 5.5, i've been meaning to give lynx a go

It has its uses.

Wes
@drachenstern shocked into silence or just too angry to type ?

was answering an SO Q
Now then, where were we?

Wes
11:13 PM
Anyway I gotta go
sorry you can rant at me tomorrow

Ah yes, you hate technology and work in the tech sector. Yeah, that's a bad combination
You might as well hate driving and go be a racecar driver
If I'm on tomorrow I promise to rant at you then ;)

Wes
I think hate's pretty strong. I just distrust and dislike a lot of stuff. More the way technology is applied.

then you dislike people

Wes
Also I'm good at what I do and enjoy doing it, but the conventions surrounding our profession is a little wierd to say the least

so anyways, Chrome is way past the last time you looked at it (albeit it's still minimal) so give it a try tomorrow
and apply a new theme after you install it. That's why they make them

Wes
11:15 PM
I have it installed.
I just don't use it

as of when? today?
make sure you're on 11

Wes
no I even had it open for that whole conversation.
em what time is 11
considering its just after 1 am here now

11 is the version of chrome

Wes
Aaah sorry misread
11.0.696.57

that's my entire screen when I'm in chrome btw

Wes
11:19 PM
Hi from chrome
happy now?
I've installed the userscript too
see you later

I need to find a better place for the phone. These speakers are "huge."

@drachenstern oh nose! We'll never know what you were chatting about!

haha, I wanted to draw attention to the bottom of the screen and the tabs I had open and how small my screen is
