1:09 AM
Heh. It's kinda amusing when the interviewer seems at least as nervous as you are.
3
I guess 'amusing' may not be the right word, but you know what I mean...

Hi folks!

Relaxing, maybe?

@mootinator - I was not scared away 'tall!

Hey @Moshe

@Moshe Excellent.

1:12 AM
@TheMountainException - Indeed, the first two days of Passover are like Sabbath, no electronics, so no tavern. Might I add that in Israel, only the first day is observed like Sabbath.

My favorite interviewers are the ones who are clearly grading your interview on a point system, but keep insisting "there are no right answers..." to their stupid questions.

I haven't heard back from an internship interview that was last week. Do I assume they're not interested?

Not necessarily.
Perhaps they haven't been allowed to use a telephone for two days.

Well I had no good answer to "What's your PHP experience?".

shrug

1:16 AM
@mootinator lol
This person sounded more like a techy than a manager type. I doubt he does a lot of interviews.
That's not a complaint, by the way, I prefer talking directly to the techs.

@GeorgeMarian On my rejection call with the place I'm referring to I noticed that their interview process seemed to be good at selecting 25+ year old men who live in mom's basement.
And they conceded that I may have a point.

Makes people who actually need a job a bit nervous :/

Speaking of which, I think I may have taken over some work from someone like that.
I can't help it. I'm usually nervous in interviews.

Backstory: I knew most of the recent hires in the department because I had previously worked there on an internship.

1:24 AM
This is someone who's lectured to classes of 20-30. However, that's an entirely different dynamic. Once you prove to them that you belong in front of them, you have them eating out of the palm of your hand.

nod
I still think the only reason I got hired there in the first place is that it was the only internship I applied for I didn't really want. I get excessively nervous during interviews.

Well, Apple's reporting module is halfway down.

Halfway?

Hooray for not knowing how much money I am paying Apple commission on.

@mootinator Yeah, I understand that. You seem more relaxed when it doesn't matter as much. Quite a paradox.

1:25 AM
@mootinator Well, I can log in, but the App I compiled from GitHub, which scrapes the data and makes it readable is not working.
First this:

Heh. Kinda like careers.so was haflway down for maintenance yesterday.

Then this:
And the scraping app isn't getting the one-star review from a disgruntled customer, presumably in Israel, where the schedule is slightly different and I forgot to account for that.

Speakin of careers.so, has anyone else gotten spam from ZoomInfo?

Thankfully, no.

1:29 AM
@mootinator Me neither.
Everybody join me in closing this off topic question:
1
Q: iPhone app review question (UI related)

dazhiWe just submitted an app for App Store review. A couple of our buttons (namely, login and sign up, which are really only used once per user) do not blink/change color when touched. Are these strong enough reasons for the app to be rejected?

It's not at all programming related. The OP asks purely if said circumstance is a violation of Apple HIG.

Heh.
needs to rep whore a few hundred points :/

Heh. I'm just past half-way there.

@GeorgeMarian I was half wondering if they got my contact info from careers.so

@mootinator I dunno. What contact info do you have on there? I've gotten two contacts through it and they were both through the system itself. I'm fairly certain that they didn't actually get my email address until I clicked on "interested."
In fact, it wouldn't show me an links or email addresses until I clicked on it.

Okay.
Just sounded rather familiar > "The top recruiting agencies use ZoomInfo to find "passive" candidates for their recruiting efforts."
And I really don't get much spam on my work account. (About 1 per week)

1:35 AM
Interesting. I don't think that SO is the only outfit using that term.

In contrast to my personal account (about 1 per 15 minutes)

There's also a good chance that they copied 'em. You know, imitation and all that.
@mootinator LOL That was one of the reasons I moved away from my yahoo email accounts.

So, I randomly got this e-mail today:
Since no one wants to pick here are some options, Outback, Texas Road House, or Shorty"s you pick from those or give a better idea

And of course it had one of these at the bottom:
This e-mail and any attachments may be privileged, confidential, and/or proprietary. If you are not the intended recipient of this email, please delete it and do not read, distribute, or reproduce it. The unauthorized use of this e-mail is strictly prohibited. Thank you.

1:38 AM
lol

So I just thought I'd share.

"To late, the warning is at the bottom"

I also replied > I'm partial to Outback, but since I'm not the intended recipient of this message, I'll have to content myself with reading, distributing, and reproducing it.

Not to mention that you have no idea that it's not intended for you w/o actually reading it.

No kidding.

1:39 AM
LOL nice

My favorite 'unintended recipient' incident I ignored for several months until I started getting this guy's work schedule pretty much every day.

When I finally replied, I got --> "Thanks, no wonder the other guy never replies."

@mootinator lol

One would think they could have worked that one out themselves.

1:47 AM
You'd think, but common sense is not as common as it should be.

@GeorgeMarian El sentido común es el menos común de los sentidos

heh (I think I translated that correctly.)

@GeorgeMarian It's basically the same as your expression, that sounds good in spanish

Hehe. Yah, I figured. :)

Hello

1:51 AM
@GeorgeMarian BTW I never asked again, are you working now?
@TylerChacha hey!

There, now the starred list is completely devoid of anything meaningful.

@mootinator I think the correct word is meaningful.

(I didn't do it, just the last one :P)

@mootinator I was about to ask what the hell was happening with the stars

Fixed.

1:53 AM
:)

Oy.

Well .. my job here is done :)
:P

lol!

...

2:12 AM
@Trufa Not exactly, but I've had several interviews. So, things are looking up.

2:30 AM
Hey, @Jin, long time no see.

Jin
@Moshe helloo

Some stars are solid, some are hollow, some are gold, some have numbers... what does it all mean?

@GeorgeMarian ohh good to hear!
I wish you the best of luck!
@GeorgeMarian and better interviewers theoatmeal.com/comics/interview_questions
I swear all of them were asked to me in the interview for job I have right now (except the hypotetcial brain teaser of course)

3:12 AM
@Jin I'm trying to make a tileable background for an app/game. Do you know of any tutorials that I can walk through for that?

Jin
@Moshe what kind of pattern?

Well, I'm trying to remake a particular game.
So, I'm looking for this pattern:
(hang on)

Make it a bacon background, obviously.

Jin
@RebeccaChernoff obviously..

3:14 AM
Red pipes
See that?
(The green guy is the character...)

@RebeccaChernoff See that? It is bacon!

@RebeccaChernoff Well, if you have a bacon background pre-rendered for me in png format with 32x32 tiles, I'll be glad to use that for a level or two.

yeah...no.

Oh well, it was worth trying.

@Moshe Bacon does not taste good rendered... it is the fat that makes it good!

3:17 AM
@Hogan Thanks for reminding me!
I'm working on the sprite atlas now.
I forgot to render the "clouds".

Jin
that's the tileable version extracted from your image.
i probably could've done it with one box, but your image has some dithering so the colors aren't too even.

@Jin Thanks!
@Jin - But of course I have several questions...
First of all, how would I remake that into a higher quality 32 pixel tile?
Second, how did you do that?

Jin
@Moshe i just eyeballed it and cropped it. you can pretty much tell where the pattern starts and ends.

Well, that's better than I can do.
And what would you do to upscale it?
Trace it with a pen tool and then reapply colors and shading?

@RebeccaChernoff it always puzzles me why some orient the smileys like this (:

Jin
3:25 AM
@Moshe you should just redraw it. it'd be easy, since it's pixel art.

Thank you.
@Jin Eh, what do I know? Thanks. I'm going to get to that soon. In the meantime, I'm using a photoshop texture as a placeholder.
@Jin Thank you.

@Trufa why does it puzzle you?

Jin
@Moshe yw. pixel art patterns are easier to do. but when you get into more textured(noised, grungy etc) they're a bit tricky

This game is from an EGA graphics card in the 1990s, shouldn't be too hard to redraw.

@RebeccaChernoff its just "the other way round"

3:27 AM
no, you're the other way around. (:

@RebeccaChernoff :)

Jin
@Moshe you may want to check out pixeljoint.com/pixels/tutorials.asp some good tuts on pixel art

grrr, WwF is convinced I'm making up words ):

@Jin Thank you again.

3:59 AM
@Trufa LOL at the interview questions

@GeorgeMarian hehe

lol, at the store today I saw one of those "cat sitter" dvds for $1, so I bought it. My cat is definitely glued to the tv.

4:34 AM
@RebeccaChernoff What does the DVD do?

Cool!
is trying his hand at making a game with cocos2d
and isn't doing too well...

4:51 AM
Hello

5:34 AM
@RebeccaChernoff Really?

I only bought it because it was $1. (;

heh
Well, does it work?

Erm, well, I said she was glued to the tv an hour ago...she's been watching it the whole time. A few times she's gotten up to paw at the tv, but mostly she's been on the couch facing the tv to watch it.

I wonder how long the interest would last. Of course, as long as you don't put on too often, it should work. Afterall, the laser pointer still seems to work on our cats.

she loves watching birds. during the day she gets to see real ones outside the window.

5:43 AM
Yeah, our cats like sitting in the window.

6:14 AM
@GeorgeMarian are you there
?
can I ask you a question?

burp
maybe

are you familiar with this question

Q: Interview question: f(f(n)) == -n

Hrvoje PrgešaA question I got on my last interview: Design a function f, such that: f(f(n)) == -n Where n is a 32 bit signed integer; you can't use complex numbers arithmetic. If you can't design such a function for the whole range of numbers, design it for the largest range possible. Any id...

I think I'm going to have a second beer, I was good today.
brb

I think I found an answer much smarter
but that would be strange

Oh, goodness a brain teaser.

6:19 AM
li = []

def f(x):
li.append(x)
return x-li[0]

n = 10

print f(f(n)) == -n
this works for n=1,2,3,4....
n negative int
and n = 0

Well, one problem is the global variable. :)

@GeorgeMarian oh ok, that woudn't be allowed?

Globals are bad, m'kay?
Generally speaking, global variables should be avoided. They can be changed by other parts of the system and thus tracking down bugs can be a royal PITA.

@GeorgeMarian ok but this is a farfetched question, that looks for ingenious answers, rather that the most correct

As for this particular question, I would assume that the function should be self contained.
@Trufa True, but it's an interview question. So, things like avoiding global variables should be a matter of course.

6:32 AM
@GeorgeMarian well, fair enough...
@GeorgeMarian :(

Sorry to burst your bubble. ;)

@GeorgeMarian you bubble burster

Yeah, I tend to do that a lot.
I'm the kind of person that you bring an idea so I can poke holes in it. :)

Well, this bursted bubble is going to sleep.

g'night man

6:34 AM
@GeorgeMarian heeh
@GeorgeMarian see you... monday I guess
4 days computer free
!!!!!

@Trufa Have a good rest of the week/weekend.
@Trufa Oh? Going on a trip?

@GeorgeMarian camping/fishing/drinking/eating/resting

Nice. Have fun!

@GeorgeMarian so, yes
@GeorgeMarian thanks!!
See you!

Heh.
today is dogfood day at @StackHQ . Everyone in the office is required to use Stack Exchange for two hours from 1pm-3pm.
Time to cause trouble.

4:10 PM
lol

4:33 PM
@Moshe You should just start talking about it, but instead of typing the name in English type it in Hebrew ;-)
I have a question for you @Moshe when you're available:
As you know I've moved. My new next door neighbors are Jewish. I have heard that it's customary to welcome new neighbors by giving them a loaf of Chullah bread after Passover ends. Is this true and an appropriate gift for me to give them?

4:50 PM
Hey! Got my first lead from Careers.SO! Very nice!

@TheMountainException Shouldn't they be giving you the bread? Or did you both just move?

5:47 PM
@TheMountainException If only there were a Q&A site of some kind for [etiquette | Judaism (so close!) | baked goods | things people have heard from, like, a friend of a friend]....
I would totally commit to I Heard This Somewhere But I Don't Remember Where, Is It True? Stack Exchange.

@PopularDemand Yahoo answers?
Geez insurance companies are evil.

@mootinator That has a lot of other types of trash that I'm not interested in.

"If you cancel this insurance today, you and your descendants will never be eligible to be covered for everything ever again. Also, we will burn you in effigy. Sound good? I didn't think so. We'll continue taking that monthly cheque."
@PopularDemand Heh.

@mootinator Scroll back up to the top of that doc and make sure they didn't pull a

Uh-oh.
I'm really not sure what the point of adding clauses which make it less desirable to come back to the same company if your needs change in the future, but whatever.

@mootinator - I liked it without the "T". It afforded you the element of surprise. You could've added it at any moment until the edit clock expired.

@PopularDemand Jewish Life and Learning is not in beta yet :-)

Ok so if someone gives a very detailed answer to my question that is missing just one key detail, should I edit, add the detail, and then accept the answer?

9:22 PM
@TheMountainException A challah would be a nice token.
Although, how good a baker are you? ;-)
@TheMountainException You could or you could try and lead them to the detail.

@TheMountainException I just accept it and then add a comment saying I had to do blah blah blah.

10:20 PM
@Shog9 around?

@TheBeachException I'm certainly 'round.

Ah...
BTW: down-vote stuff like this: htw.stackexchange.com/questions/273/…

10:24 PM
@Shog9 I did

Figured, but saw the flag & worried you might not have.

@Shog9 i.e. downvote and not flag?
I downvoted, commented and flagged
actually I flagged by mistake from /review, LOL

@TheMountainException Yeah, I can't remove it, it makes me ANGRY

Right. In truth, if this thing ever makes it out of private beta we'll want stuff like that deleted... But, I think it's important that the community gets used to down-voting as early as possible, rather than expecting mediocrity to just... disappear

Agree
Also @Shog9 was I out of line in how I responded to Christopher?

10:27 PM
@Shog9 I can only cast delete if it's down voted

@TheBeachException yup...

@TheMountainException No, I don't have a problem with that. The best place for constructive criticism is in comments on the post being criticized, not rolled up into a post on Meta.

@Shog9 You're gonna want to delete that, quite a bad example

The answer? Or the meta post?
I figured I'd just redact the meta post.

10:29 PM
Sorry I can't follow logical conversation threads right now for some reason
@Shog9 thanks; that's basically what I was trying to tell him

BECAUSE WE DON'T HAVE PROPER THREADS

Aaaanyway, @TheMountainException: y'all best get to work composing some mind-blowing HTW answers. This site's gonna need all the help it can get...

@Shog9 Well I did my part to fire off enough questions to start the human verification sensors. (Yep, all two questions....)

10:39 PM
@Shog9 Yeah, I've been racking my brain

QR codes, proximity sensors... Mouthwash? How do they work?

I really want this site to succeed. I've been trying to ask very specific questions, the kind you can't just read a wikipedia article on
@Moshe OH YES

I really was wondering about QR codes recently.

But I will let you ask those on Monday
If we get to Monday

Monday?
I just asked them now.

10:41 PM
Monday How Things Work leaves private beta
But Joel wants to kill it unless it can improve

Why does he want to kill it?
@TheMountainException I'm in on the private beta.

Because people wwere basically copypasting from wikipedia and howstuffworks.com
@Moshe I haven't seen you on there
in that case

@TheMountainException Refresh please. I just made a cameo.

Q: Please don't make me kill this site.

Joel SpolskyI love it! It's going to be great. This Stack Exchange has the potential to be monumentally awesome. I love the idea of hundreds of detailed, wikipedia-style, community-edited explanations of how things actually work. With pictures WE took or drew. With knowledge from OUR heads. But I might have...

@Moshe I see that now!

@TheMountainException +1 for both of you.

10:44 PM
@Shog9 hows the status from the Staffs perspective

@Moshe you like my novel? ;-)

@TheMountainException Bro, I'm serious Amazon...

@TheMountainException I read the jacket flap. :P

Yeah @Shog9, what are the diamonds saying? @RebeccaChernoff, have you seen htw? As much as I make fun of you for no apparent reason, I do value your opinion :-)
@Moshe LOL

You know how folks say that you need to target a wide audience?
Well... consider this:
Nippon sold maybe 50 copies.
You know, it's a game, a pastime for some.
My other paid app, a religious oriented app with a narrow niche market has sold 51, thank Gd, just yesterday.
I think cliches and expectations lie.
Well, that's not to say that this wasn't advertised better, but still...

10:46 PM
Longtail markets can be great
My company's latest product is very longtail
And people love it

@TheMountainException Longtail?

niche basically

Ah, I see.

The Long Tail or long tail refers to the statistical property that a larger share of population rests within the tail of a probability distribution than observed under a 'normal' or Gaussian distribution. A long tail distortion will arise with the inclusion of some unusually high (or low) values which increase (decrease) the mean, skewing the distribution to the right (or left). The term Long Tail has gained popularity in recent times as describing the retailing strategy of selling a large number of unique items in relatively small quantities – usually in addition to selling fewer popula...

I guess when a product is general, folks don't necessarily relate to it per sé. When it's niche, there are less customers, but relatively, more of those people feel the need to get the product.

10:48 PM
@TheMountainException If you want to know the answer to that, just re-read Joel's "I WILL KILL IT WITH FIRE (maybe)" post again.

Does that make any sense?

What worries me is stuff like this: htw.stackexchange.com/questions/256/… (sorry, @TheBeachException)

@Shog9 I guess I was wondering if the opinion had changed. I take your response as a "NO"
@Moshe exactly
That's what we've found anyway
(and by "we" I mean my company)

HVAC is my main gig. And... it's kinda a big deal, in the "no one outside the biz thinks about it until it breaks" sorta way. If you wanna know how a compressor AC works, there are literally thousands of sites on the 'Net that will tell you, in whatever level of detail you want.
...so I'm having trouble seeing what two brief, roughly-equivalent answers to an open-ended question add to The Internet. If someone asked me that question, I wouldn't link to either one.

@Shog9 I agree... what about if it gets more specific? I.E this one ?
Sorry I forget that some here aren't in the beta
points at @TimStone and laughs

10:53 PM
@TheMountainException Before you deleted it I at least got to read the onebox. Now I have nothing.

@TheMountainException I liked that question. I liked Jacob's answer. But I gotta ask: did you verify that he was correct?

A: Please don't make me kill this site.

MosheI think that a vital part of this sites success is going to be the following element which is mentioned in the StackExchange FAQ on many a site. It’s also perfectly fine to ask and answer your own question, as long as you pretend you’re on Jeopardy: phrase it in the form of a question. I th...

@mootinator Oh you could read the onebox??

@Shog9 See the second part of my answer.

@TheMountainException Yep.

10:55 PM
@Moshe You're basically proposing Wikipedia, but written in Q&A format...?

@Shog9 a little: I read the wikipedia article and saw picture of things similar to what I saw in the crawspace under my new home.

What's this laughing at me? I saw a full scale UK police raid earlier, this is Serious Business we're talking about here.

And what he said made sense
but no, I could have probably verified more

@TheMountainException That's... not a ringing endorsement of the usefulness of HTW.

@Shog9 No, but I thought of Wikipedia. I think that citations are important here.

10:56 PM
Well I would hope if he were wrong he'd be downvoted. In private beta, there's not a large enough community to self-police
@Shog9 but yes I do see your point

@TimStone UK police? Bah, I heard they don't even get guns.

LOL
@TimStone I am just pointing and laughing at your persistent lack of gravatar ;-)

Twelve vans rolled up with police with riot gear, it was quite a sight. :P

@TheMountainException It's gonna get worse before it gets better though. You'd hope you can attract enough general-knowledge experts to vet and fill in the gaps, buuuut...

Shh, I'm on vacation!

10:58 PM
@TimStone you like to cause trouble everywhere you go, don't you?
@Shog9 yeah, okay... I see what you're saying here and I agree this can be a problem.

Wikipedia works 'cause folks write about what they know, what they're interested in. Q&A requires you have folks with those interests and knowledge, and folks with questions on it. Don't get those matched up right, and...

Of course. I was wearing my SO tshirt for good measure too.

I'm not saying HTW is doomed - but you're gonna have to pull something really clever out of your collective asses to make it actually work
