8:02 PM
Yeah but still.

8:28 PM
Well, the bar has obviously closed for the night.

@ThomasMcDonald Funny how it died so suddenly.

Jin
Closing time, you don't have to go home but you can't stay here

Indeed.

Sorry, we appear to be closed.

8:36 PM
oh alright
just checking the basics
:)

Or everyone else has disappeared, same thing

I cant wait for SO to implement this!
bye!

I would think this is the one for SO.

This? Hahahaha. No. It's just for private testing on Meta.
well, public testing now, I guess.

come back in 6 to 8 weeks

Jin
8:38 PM
This chat is public now.

Yes, but just like SO won't change it's Meta, I'm thinking this would be the official SO chat, but I don't really know.

No. This has nothing to do with Meta. It's just there for testing.
As soon as it's ready, it's going to be chat.stackoverflow.com

Ok, it's way past lunch time. Time to whip up something to eat.

I'm back

grr...hootsuite's link shortner seems to be having issues

8:44 PM
I had a good lunch

it's 10 pm here, i'm thinking of supper

Jin
I just made some ramen. my ramen is awesome.

Bread and Wine goes out again at 3

Anyone know if this chat is SQL based? surprised that one would store every comment in a SQL DB?

I believe it is on the same thing Stack Overflow uses

8:48 PM
Seems like an odd choice for this type of app, but seems to have been well done...

what would be the alternative?

@Chacha201 In what timezone?

PST, so about an hour from now
but someone will have to tell a tale..
Hello @hobodave

Hey @Chacha102
nifty

@Fara, some type of round-robin / bucket system seems a bit more manageable than this type of polling... either way, seems to have been well done...

8:53 PM
How do I post an Meta-SO question in the big format here?

paste in the link

Q: Removed Chat Blips Should Be... Removed.

Chacha102When a message is deleted, it says 'Removed'. Unfortunately, this gets very annoying when I'm trying to edit multiple chat messages together into a single message that is more useful if it is starred, as there are 2-5 'removed' messages right under it. It would be nice to find a better solution...

Q: Times in Chat Box in Rooms don't update

Lance RobertsThe posts that are starred in chat go to a Chat Box (may have the terminology wrong here), but I noticed that the timestamps never update unless I hit reload. How about we make them relative, so they stay accurate.

hmm, I've done that before and it didn't expand
do you have to do it by itself

did you have anything in front of it?
yes

@mmattax i'm not really a web programmer, i don't know what a round-robin bucket system would entail. :)

8:56 PM
@Fara Something very complicated I'm sure

@Chacha102, I actually don't understand what you're trying to do with the removed thing

Ok, look at this
Those removed things never go away
and if you removed two messages because you were consolidating it into a single message, you have all of these ugly 'removed' things

what do you mean "never"?

oh, I didn't know you could delete individual lines (I guess because they're separate posts)

why does that matter?

8:57 PM
<b>bold?</b>

It clutters up the chat and discourages cleaning stuff up because you are left with all of these removed messages

Jin
but removed messages don't happen that often though.(except for when people testing it)

and actually, right now, removed messages aren't in the transcript

I've mentioned this before but there does need to be a marker of removed messages.

@Jin actually, there are many many times when I would've liked to removed 3 or four messages to make 1, high value one

9:00 PM
you can't vote on chat lines, so where's the "value"?

Yes you can..

I guess I think of chat as ephemeral so there's not a lot of point in trying to change what you already said

If you couldn't edit chat at all, I'd be fine with all the removed messages
but because you can, and you can take what you said and revise it to make it better, more concise, it seems very ugly to have all of those markers there

Jin
I can see where you're coming from. but from our testing, very few people actually remove often. I'm not sure if that justifies as a feature... also, "(removed)" messages also give people context of what just happened too. so there's no jumpiness in chat.

0
A: Removed Chat Blips Should Be... Removed.

Lance RobertsThey could delete all nested Removed lines.

Hmm, formatting doesn't show in answer text here on those big links

9:08 PM
@jin I could see myself doing that quite often...then again, I typo like it was going out of style.

Jin
@GeorgeMarian i use edit to fix typos. but i rarely delete any msg that has typo in it.

If you look at StackOverflow, if you do anything to a question within 5 minutes and remove it, it looks like it never happened

@jin Yah, I agree with that. Being dyslexic, I find that many times I need to rearrange my thoughts. The first version doesn't always come out right. :D

i like the removed tag. because it's public it dissuades people from randomly deleting stuff, but at the same time it allows you to remove things if you really need to.

Why should we discourage people from getting rid of stuff that shouldn't be there?

9:13 PM
Because of the confusion it might cause from the holes in a conversation it creates.

because people should think about what they post before they post it, instead of relying on a delete button for when they make an arse of themselves

Jin
@Chacha102 I think the context is different. also if you look at the current chat rooms, you actually won't see a lot of removed messages cluttering up UI

@fara Good point.

Jin
another reason i'm for the removed message is as mentioned, it'd create jumpiness in chats, which is not a good UX.

@Jin not that a majority of the chat is removed, but I've seen some conversations that have had a lot of removed messages
so its not like it is an unused feature
@Jin Not to leave behind the context issue, but I can delete my comments at anytime, no matter where they are, without a trace

9:20 PM
i think this is something the main SO site does well, it doesn't stop you from posting crap, it's just puts lots of carrots (rep/badges etc..) in your way that persuades you from doing so. i think having a public "i deleted this" message will make people less likely to delete their stuff, which will make them less likely to post stuff they'll need to delete.

anyone have a coin handy?
client/server problem equally validly solved on either end, need a coin flip

Jin
@Chacha102 oh I"m not saying it's unused. I'm saying it's not often multiple people remove many of their msgs at time one. from a UX pov, imagine if you're looking at a wall of text(like now), then suddenly the chat shifts down a line or two(because someone deleted msgs). that'd be more confusing.

@Jin Yes, I get that can be confusing. But the current comment system allows for this.

@Nick: Tails. (But you'll never know if I really flipped one.)

server it is!
yeah....i'm ok with that :)
thanks

Jin
9:23 PM
@Chacha102 commenting on SO is different from chat here. plus, the chat transcript doesn't include deleted msgs.

this is a test

@Jin I would think that would be one of the most important places to put the removed messages

deleted comments don't appear in the SO data dump either though, same situation imo

@Jin If someone were to delete a message right now and it disappeared, you'd know something would be afoot
@jin Someone looking back at a transcript wouldn't know anything

9:26 PM
@Cha, like if I added the meaning of life which is:

Hey @JarrodDixon

Jin
@Chacha102 if someone deleted a msg now i wouldn't know. I'd see the screen shifts up/down. unless I remember every single line that's on the current viewport.

@Chacha102 hello!

salty sailor!

arrrrr!

9:28 PM
@Jin Maybe not if it immediately disappeared, but if it switched to a message that said removed that faded out 30 seconds later, you'd know
Hey @MichaelPryor

Is this the cheese and wine chat room?

@WimHollebrandse Yes, Well bread and wine.

Great! ;-)

the cheese is optional

I've got some wine to share

9:33 PM
Cheese and Wine and Bread

Manchego and Sauvignon Blanc it is then ;-)

Anybody here following the series of posts from I___

The only thing is someone has to tell us a tale..

cheese, wine, bread and animated unicorn gifs

9:34 PM
There is only bread and wine if someone tells us a tale
Hey @MattSherman

@cha - Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale, a tale of a fateful trip...

Hey @ChristianPayne

Hello @Chacha102

your tale :)

Ok, now that a tale has been told. Bread and Wine for Everyone!

9:38 PM
Cheers @Chacha102 !
How do you embed youtube clips?

paste the full url
with nothing else

OK - cool.
Well, here's an uncle Albert war story for you all:

Hey @Troggy

Hello All

Hi @Troggy

9:41 PM
pours @Troggy a glass of wine

Jin
is this channel a MUD?

MUD?

More Utter Drivel?
Sure is

@SeamusCampbell The Python questions? I've answered a few, I don't know if I'd call it "following"

@wim i love Uncle Albert. :)

9:43 PM
@Jin What is MUD?

@Fara Aye, he's great. :-)

Jin
A MUD (Multi-User Dungeon), pronounced , is a multiplayer real-time virtual world described primarily in text. MUDs combine elements of role-playing games, hack and slash, player versus player, interactive fiction, and online chat. Players can read or view descriptions of rooms, objects, other players, non-player characters, and actions performed in the virtual world. Players typically interact with each other and the world by typing commands that resemble a natural language. Traditional MUDs implement a computer role-playing game set in a fantasy world populated by fictional races an...

This is MUD

@Jin Yes, and you can be the cook

@michael He's building a record-storage system for a largish doctor's office, it sounds like
... i worry about those patients, a bit

9:45 PM
I will be a dragon ... naturally.

This really doesn't run well (at all) on Safari on iPhone 4...
:-(

@SeamusCampbell There was one where he posted what looked like a good chunk of patient data; I was really hoping it was made-up test data

Clinical systems are definitely one of the most complex areas you could work in..

I can't get Gilligan out of my head!

cracks open beer

9:50 PM
Me either

Out of my Tavern @WimHollebrandse! You have brought a curse onto me!
No more wine for you.
You can still have bread, just no wine.

@Chacha102 Alright then. Fair nuff. Just bread. And beer.

@WimHollebrandse Beer is foul. Have all the beer you wish

oh that's just not true

Just not the beer by the door. People spit tobacco in that.

9:52 PM
Agreed @Seamus

you just haven't found the beer that suits your palate yet

You can't generalise beers like that @Chacha102

You need to read my book on beer :)

I'm a 16 year old programmer. I can generalize anything I want to.

er. when you're older.

9:53 PM
Especially alcohol related

Don't tar them all with the same...err...froth

Yes, you are welcome to that opinion for now.

I now would like to point to my website and ask for your opinion on the design
Hello @BilltheLizard

Hey @Chach

It's a little low-contrast; other than that, looks fine.

9:55 PM
err... @Chacha102. Didn't realize you have to click on the auto-complete. :)

@Chacha102 I'd make the posts background stand out a tad more from the main body BG
Hey @BilltheLizard

@BilltheLizard You don't 'need' to

tab-tab-tab

@BilltheLizard It is the same as comments. I still get it with 3 letters

haha @Bill, your name works out perfect here

9:56 PM
@BilltheLizard The auto complete just gives you the full, capitalized word

browser at the right width gives "Bill the [avatar]"

@Chacha102 I say the post background is fine. To me the issue is the relationship between the background and foreground color.

@NickCraver: Nice. It's fully displayed for me.

Sadly, tab for me completes the word and tabs over to "Send", so when I hit space it sends the "@foo" with nothing else

@GeorgeMarian I'll play around with it

9:57 PM
stretch/shrink the window width, makes it better :)

@Chacha102 Not that you couldn't increase the contrast a bit between site background and post background.

@GeorgeMarian That is what I think I'm going to do.
@GeorgeMarian I'll probably change the post background to be a little lighter

@Chacha102 Then definitely change the foreground to something darker than white :)

ok
look at the domain name above the title
for each post
that color?

that color for what element? the foreground text?

10:01 PM
yeah

@cha what if you swapped the greens?

I don't think that would be enough contrast. I would go even darker.

my issue would be the back to foreground being progressive, removing contrast at each level

That's a good improvement now already @Chacha102

I agree with george, darker BG for the text areas

10:02 PM
try that

this is for shares specifically, love the blog colors
much more readable imo

does anyone here use Tumblr?
I'm trying to understand the point of it

Tumblr

I'd change the post text to be a darker tint of the same colour scheme

The point is everything isn't text
You can post music, quotes, etc
Wordpress = Only Text (Or embeded stuff)
Tumblr = Quotes, Music, Text, Photos, etc

no kidding, that theme makes my head hurt in 10 seconds :)

the shares one?

the one thomas linked, the slanted one

ah

yeah, it does
but it was to prove a point, WP can theoretically be made to do anything

10:06 PM
oy...yet another site which forgets that NoScript is quite popular

hows that for text color eh? lol

@Thomas - true, but that's true of anything turing complete isn't it? :)

@Nick - I guess, but I wouldn't fancy writing a microblogging site in Brainfuck, for example.

oh, goodness...that is so unnecessary (re: slanted)

10:08 PM
@Chacha102 IMO BG colours on blogs in general are overrated. White ftw.

@Wim - it matters how much white-space there is, can be blinding
most fixed-width sites, maximized on a 30" are best with anything but white imo

@Nick All depends how bright your screen is really.
And what your ambiant light is

@Wim - they're pretty bright :) the standard dell 3007wpfs, ambient depends on time of day, dark/storm atm

@wim Not so much. I can't dim my monitor well enough to keep white from hurting the retinas. Believe me, I've been trying everything. Even color temperature.

10:11 PM
Well, no such problems on my MBP...

@George are you sure you tried everything?
Sunglasses or sun glasses are a form of protective eyewear designed primarily to prevent bright Sun light and high-energy visible light from damaging or discomforting the eyes. They can sometimes also function as a visual aid, as variously termed spectacles or glasses exist which feature lenses that are colored, polarized or darkened. In the early 20th century they were also known as sun cheaters (cheaters being an American slang term for glasses). Many people find direct sunlight too bright for comfort. During outdoor activities, the human eye can receive more light than usual. Healthc...

lol @Nick

DON'T BRING ME DOWN

@nick LOL Yes, I will be visiting an ophthalmologist as soon as I can and see about getting tinted glasses.

Like the name 'sun cheaters'

10:13 PM
oh crap i need to do that
I think you're supposed to go at least every 6 years or something

lol i think it's more often than that
but, that's to an optometrist, I think.

@NickCraver How do you like the dell 3007? I was considering one of the dell 30's as a monitor upgrade in the near future. With the 3008 and up and coming 3011 as options also.

I really hate my desk

An ophthalmologist is for more serious issues than regular checkups on eyesight. I've noticed some serious contrast issues lately. I used to think it was my old CRT...

it has one of these elevated platform things

10:14 PM
I love them, I have the older ones as well, I recommend 2 of the lower models (fewer inputs) then one high-end for your center screen, the high end takes every input you would need

that make it hard to fit 3 monitors on it

some of the SO team had the samsungs much shorter than I've had mine and I know of at least 2 of their 30" that have eaten it

How many moderators do we have in here anyway?

iirc, geoff sent his for warranty and it never came back

I found my productivity increased immensely when I first got a second monitor and then slowly decreased as the second monitor became a home for Spotify instead of anything vaguely productive.

10:16 PM
I'd hold out for the 27 inch Apple Cinema Display myself - over the 30 inch dell.

@Wim - size doesn't matter, as long as you get enough pixels imo, the 30" appeal (at the time) was it was the only thing running 2560x1600

I'm seriously considering buying my GF a new monitor for her B-day, so I can use her current one as second display.

size does matter...

I think the apple is 2560x1440, pretty close

I love my 24' way more than my 21'

10:17 PM
@Nick agreed - and at 16:9 ratio, the 27 incher is 2560x1440 indeed

Yah, I'd love a couple of 24's (or even one, for that matter).

what's the price on one currently?

Think it'll be 999 USD
Coming out in Sept
Quite hefty

not bad at all, that's about $100 less than the dell's if you can catch them on sale

my 17" crt seems a little quaint right now

10:19 PM
Aye, still, just one wouldn't be enough ;-)

@Fara - yeah but if you adjust the gamma gun in the back you don't have to go outside for a tan

@nick what is this "outside" you speak of?

not sure myself, the interwebs makes mention of such a place

status-hot-linking-denied

10:21 PM
?

status-beer-keg-needs-replacing

Its outside in the barn...

right, it's almost 23:30 here which means the bar is closing soon

i'm presuming SO does lockins

@cha we see nothing, you only see it from cache :)

10:23 PM
gah

Unless of course, he's posting an image of a broken image.

self-host or fail

I'm about to

status-it-is-too-freaking-hot-and-humid-today
not having A/C sucks

I currently have a dell 2709W and really like all the input options. I prefer the 16:10 ratio displays. In reality, I just want to move up to 2560x1600 res.

10:24 PM

@Troggy - I find that a 30" with your 27" turned 90 is also a good option sometimes, you may want to play with it
really depends what you have open during the day

@Chacha102 What's the relevance of that pic? Is it bait?

@NickCraver I like the idea of having one vertical display. Unfortunately, it doesn't look quite right. Probably because of the orientation of the pixel elements.

10:28 PM
@George - depends on the model for sure, if you go RGBLED that goes away in every screen that I've seen

@George @NickCraver Yah, my current setup is a dell 2709w with my old 2005 next to it.

the issue is that cleartype uses sub-pixel rendering to get the aliasing effect, and that's not quite handled property when the screen's rotated 90º either way, at least in my experience

The great thing of the 30-inch dell is that you can have 2 vertical 4:3 1600x1200 on either side of it...

Yah, I only tried it once with the so-so Dell monitors at the previous job.

So, how long before we see mass market consumer 300ppi displays?

10:30 PM
I have only dealt with the Ultrasharp line from Dell. I like the higher quality displays and don't mind paying extra $$$ for them.

Bound to happen at some point

I think our office bought the cheapest 24" dell that they ever made
it's probably the cheapest anyone's ever made actually
I got complaints on our site colors, so I had to bring one of my monitors in to show the drastic difference
@Troggy - they're easily worth it IMO, I've had 2 3007WFP for 4+ years now, no issues, no dead pixels, etc

@troggy I don't mind paying for quality. It's having to overpay for quality that gets to me.

LCD's should last long. I mean, what's the wear & tear? No moving parts...

So does this work?

10:37 PM
no

Oh I see.

@wim True, but just recently my LCD started exhibiting signs of a nasty issue I've faced with two Del laptops. It wouldn't render a certain shade of black, instead it was red or something like that.

kind flickery it seems.

@wim I think that may have been an issue w/ the cord and/or connector though, as it has gone away.

*kind of

10:38 PM
@GeorgeMarian Right, I see
Usually is a dodgy connection/connector with those type of shading issues

it sure aint no IRC.

Anyone know where I can buy a solder-on 4-pin DIN connector? The one on my monitor broke and I need to redo it.

@wim Yup, probably. It happened after I first connected my GF's monitor and went away after I touched the wire near the video card end.

ok
I just went through 300 demotivational posters

bet you're pumped.

10:40 PM
@Chacha102 Aren't those great?
They always give me a kick.

@Chacha102 Send's the link plz ;-)

these are the ones I liked: 102content.com/images

@Chacha102 ROFL!

10:44 PM

Making a new channel for this
I'll invite you guys involved

@Chacha102 Toss me an invite as well. If I don't get involved, I'll at least get a kick out of the images.

who here is still clicking "remind me in 4 hours"?

@Fara I let you in

10:48 PM
ok thanks
i think accepting invites is a bit buggy
i kept getting the same message over and over again

meh, I'll open it up

no i have access, it's cool. just went a bit weird is all.

Anyone who wants to come into the Demotivation Room, it is not locked
@Fara Yeah I know

Right - laters folks

Cya

11:21 PM
Hello all. Anyone doing anything interesting?

Hello @Chacha102 apparently not. Though, I may have finally figured out what I was forgetting. (I meant to call a client today, alas he's on the east coast.)
what the eff? ctrl/shift clicking on an entry in gmail is complaining about a popup blocker?
