Rule of thumb: No Action Needed is an invalid review action. There is always action needed, be it a downvote, a closevote, a deletevote, a flag, or, failing that, and edit, ore even an upvote! I don't see how you can look at all those options and choose none of them, but if you do, press skip instead of NAN. — bjb568 43 secs ago
> join your classmates in winning this Hipster Monster badge!‏
Maybe... not.
01:15
If all of your classmates are doing it, it must be cool
@rene I'll get to it when I'm able to. If one of the moderators wants to tackle it first, great! But they're pretty busy too.
No offense, but tags are... not the most pressing problem on SO right now.
blasphemy.
Hey, I didn't say anything about SFF. Tags are destroying that site.
I suspect they've taken a back seat lately.
It's all about tags. All of the other arguments are just a proxy for that one.
@Shog9 It goes downhill from there... they then weasel out of saying my classmates are "winning" it:
> Your classmates could be playing to win this Hipster Monster badge
01:22
Your classmates suck. No wonder you're always here instead of doing your schoolwork.
> 10
per day
I reject your supposition that I'm always here.
Here you are, trying hard to win a monster badge or whatever, only to find your classmates working against you.
I'd spend all my time in a tavern too if I had such comrades
Oh please. You have to answer math problems to get the "Hipster Monster" badge.
I guess they needed another revenue source...
Meanwhile, you can earn multiple badges for doing nothing more than answering questions on Stack Overflow!
If I was you, I'd do that... Before those backstabbing classmates get wind of it.
You seem to think that my contributions would actually have some benefit to the site. Have you seen my answers?

G'day! Excuse me if I'm at the wrong place asking this. I would just like to ask that I have posted a bug report on Meta.SO. That bug was gone away, but it's now occuring again and I have left a comment about it below my question.
So my actual question is if that is the correct way to do so? Or better yet should I edit it into the question to make it "active" again? Or just leave it as it is?
you might want to ask on Meta Stack Exchange rather than Meta Stack Overflow

Ant the client continues cutting down the proposed solution bush, until only a stick is left.
One day I should try something like that old "Expert" video.
"Dear client, with only 100 days of development work, you can have a custom Human Resource Training SharePoint portal that will allow you users to manage training requests in a centralized way, browse the corporate calendar of formative events, share knowledge on the corporate wiki site and much more...."
@Derpy Past tense of to shag.
"or, for just 50 days we can give you a nice 'Bing it' web part, that will allow your user to initiate a Bing search directly from your SharePoint portal"
oooh, so much time I actually needed this.
[ SmokeDetector ] Pattern-matching website in answer: Microsoft Office/Mircosoft Project by Diego1p0 on pt.stackoverflow.com
@Derpy haha, you still have that image lying around.
14:02
@DroidDev it is in the browser favorite bar, ready for usage.
@Derpy now I know how to identify you, when I see you in real life
Actually, you just gave me an idea. I should create a grease monkey script that adds a "Scold user" button
@Derpy aren't we all some kind of geeks in our own way?
@DroidDev Probably, suddenly finding yourself in a world of candy colored ponies and seeing a pony passing by with some SharePoint related books hanging from the saddlebag should have been noticed well before coming to that...
@Derpy but, y'know, I'd just change ways, if I see a pony....
14:11
> The magic of friendship doesn't just exist in Equestria. It's everywhere. You can seek it out, or you can forever be alone. The choice is yours.
(yep, actual quote, and yep, I actually used it in an answer on meta. Wonder how many noticed)
@Derpy you won't like my answer to that
@DroidDev why? In a way, it is not like it is actually pony related. That said, I agree we may have a different view on the "friendship" part and what a friend is.
14:32
@Derpy I proposed that we rename SFF.se to "Science Fiction and Fantasy: Friendship Is Magic" but it didn't get any traction.
@MikeEdenfield one of the rooms on RPG has a "candy-colored-ponies" tag attached.
But yes, your subjects there should really work on increasing the number of pony related questions. Otherwise, I may be not able to farm that gold badge
not my subjects.
their heathen anti-pony ways are beyond me.
@MikeEdenfield Oh, the ancient "brony-antibrony" wars. What a nice way to waste time arguing about nonsense. Yep, I got the idea.
Anyway, mlp on SFF.se is a bordeline topic, it is there because the off-topic ruling is somehow confused when applied to such edge cases.
14:47
it's not borderline at. It has magic.
and flying horses.
and friendship. Friendship is never off-topic
@MikeEdenfield I meant that it would be nice to have an "Animated Shows" SE. Not like Anime that is just for (mostly) Japanese shows.
there's an Area51 for that.
its not getting a lot of support, from what I saw
24
Comics, Cartoons & Animation

Proposed Q&A site for everyone interested in the art of comics, either as consumer or producer, from graphic novels to newspaper and Internet cartoons, from Simpsons to Disney classics.

Currently in definition.

but MLP would be on-topic for both SF/F and M/TV so having a 3rd stack for it would be pushing it. IMO.
@MikeEdenfield that is because we have sites with overlapping arguments. Soon we will have a TV Shows site, one for just Animated TV Shows, one for Live Action, and one for Live Action Wushu movies produced in China during an even number year.
15:19
@MikeEdenfield Was I going to post a question on King of Thorns, I could use Anime (it is an Anime), Movies and TV (it is a movie), and Science&Fiction (it is sci-fi)
Probably I could fit in some more with a little creativity.

1 hour later…
16:31
@MikeEdenfield - anyway, b_jonas actually raised the idea in the past that I should move my chat room to the SFF.se site. I assume you would think it is appropriate?

@JasonC when I need to call ISP tech support, I have learned to drop keywords that make the Level 1 techs eyes glaze over and foist me off on L-2 immediately.
like 'router' or 'linux' or 'computer' or 'hi'
"DNS"
there must be similar keywords for software support.
even if they are NCIS-level nonsense.
"well i checked the kernel debugger memory dumps for software cycles and didn't see any.'
Read the error log. The fact that you know what an error log is and are not saying "It's not working" is probably a decent indication that you can skip level 1
unless the error log says "You are an idiot."
19:26
An application I inherited at a previous job had an error message that read: "The cow has jumped over the moon. But not our moon. That's weird."
Fortunately, that made finding the cause in the code easy enough. It was a unique log message
At my last job we got to rewrite their flagship project in C# (from Visual Foxpro). The first thing I did when I started was install an global exception handler that said "OH NOES! Stuff went wrong! error message here"
but I left the company before we finished and only found out years later that the software shipped that way.

Hey @Shog9
good afternoon
More like evening for me :P
still technically after noon
You are on the stack exchange staff right?
correct
20:12
Have you guys ever considered awarding some rep for moderation tasks?
sure
Or do you not want people whose primary focus is to moderate
not so much that...
it's a bad incentive
because it feels like im forced to play the FGITW game to get somewhere where I can
Lets be real here im not an expert and my answers won't stand out on quality vs experts, even if I try my damndest
practice makes perfect
20:13
So to get reputation people like me are forced to engage in destructive behavior
if you wait to become an expert to answer questions, you'll never be an expert
Not all my education happens on SO
;)
still, you must educate yourself somewhere
Its a sad fact that by and far the fastest way to get rep on this site is to churn out googled answers to dupes of dupes of dupes
are you certain?
20:15
I've played this game in my first month
and got to ~1k doing that for very little time investment
If I was willing to flood the site with enough trash to keep playing this game I could get at 10k this year easily
If you are doing it just for a bigger number next to your name, it may be time to take a short break.
That guy has been a member for less than a year
He got to 10K in 64 days
Look over his answers if you like
Hes probably better then me in programming
most likely even
Im talking about ways for a dirty noob like myself
Perhaps this guy is just posting copy-pasta. It took him 80 days
If I was even less scrupulous then that I could just plagiarise yes
the chances of getting caught are low and the penaltys even lower
20:19
Alternatively, if you want a bigger number, find another site on the network were you can participate more effectively. There are a lot of unique sites on the network.
I do participate
I love moderating things and keeping trash out
@Magisch or be scrupulous and use the opportunity to learn things you wouldn't have otherwise and share what you've learned with others.
It always strikes me as... Kinda ironic, when folks who complain about lazy askers and careless answerers aren't willing to put in the effort to earn moderation privileges.
When I started here, it took me a good month just to earn the editing privilege. A lot of my answers from back then ended up deleted. It was hard. But I wanted to edit.
If you want it, put the work in to earn it.
It because of the two are disconnected and require different skillsets
For all the doom and gloom, there are still people joining Stack Overflow to write good answers, and they do still get rewarded for it. Spend some time looking at the good examples (as those I posted above) and less time fixating on the bad ones.
why can't i moderate my way to more rep? Im still helping the site
20:23
@Magisch I've found it takes less effort to write a good non FGITW answer that yields 10+ votes, than it does to write 10 FGITW answers that yield a total of maybe 5
@Magisch Of course they do. Why would you not want multiple skillsets? You are not here as a line worker or a surgeon, doomed to spend your days making the same motions over and over again.
The more breadth you gain to your learning, the more you are able to appreciate those with depth even in areas where you lack it.
This is critical to moderation.
@Shog9 Im still learning programming. SO is a big part of that, sometimes through answering tosh, but mostly through reading good answers
Reputation is intended to show your "skill" (debatable) in a specific tag etc. By correcting grammar, or closing questions, giving rep for the would skew it.
@Magisch are you still in school?
If half your reputation comes from moderating answers, it does not properly show others that your rep was gained from good Q&A
20:25
@Shog9 Im an apprentice
In vocational training
after that I'll be getting a masters in computer science
so im still gonna be in school at least for 7 years from now
@Magisch take every opportunity you find then to improve your writing. It will serve you well in your education and perhaps other areas of life.

As Sterling notes, a well-written answer that demonstrates your own understanding can bring far greater rewards than persistent grinding for reputation.
by the time I write that great answer (I doubt im even capable of it currently) I can have 5-6 FGITW answers to tosh and get more rep from it
@Magisch that's when you edit your answer to be the best, most detailed of all of them
@Shog9 omg ty, I thought I was being brutally ignored lol
@Andy This time I was cursed by a support contract through a reseller, a self proclaimed "engineer" who refused to even communicate the issue clearly until he had "gathered sufficient information". I.e. 2 weeks of running random tests that I knew had no relevance to the issue when we just needed a guy with the source code and a debugger to spend an hour with it. Which eventually happened. And went exactly as predicted with a bug fix and a quick patch.
20:29
gently. Gently ignored.
In the past 12 days I have accumulated 108 pointless emails with this guy. It's kinda fun to reread them and watch me and the client's patience slowly melt away.
I just found a bottle of BBQ sauce in the back of my cupboard
There go your weekend plans?
Its label reads, "best if used by 30Aug2009"
Let's test this theory
20:33
welp, back to learning assembler
I just learned that today is National Working Naked Day
@Shog9 be careful, I tested that theory with grape juice and it ended in agony bent over a skateboard rail
It is to late in my work date to take advantage of that
So um, phrasing, but true story.
you could still do it @Andy
20:34
@SterlingArcher I'll report back if it makes me suddenly bad at skating
National Working Naked Day + Shog + A bottle of expired barbecue sauce + Friday = ???
@JasonC Did at any point you think about just telling the client
tl;dr the stomach pain was so instant and painful I couldn't move from a rail
it's a typical day
that this "engineer" is full of shit
20:35
I spent about 4 hours outside moaning and then.. well... take a wild guess.
went back for more?
Well yeah. You can't perform an experiment without a control
@Magisch Oh of course. The client and I were both aware from day 1. Neither of us had the power to overcome the fact that he was our only support contact. There was a lot of facepalming between us.
@JasonC Ahh, corporate world
No but seriously: let sleeping grape juice lie. It's not worth it
20:36
A bunch of smiles, eh?
I suspect your BBQ sauce may be relevant here
I tried unsuccessfully to go over his head three times with different strategies, no success. I was about to email a dev directly since the guy accidentally let one of the developers email addresses slip. It didn't come to that.
I like working in a small company
it means IT is controlled by me and 2 other people
so bullshit is not a thing usually
My company has 1 employee. It has its ups and downs.
I'm literally the most inexperienced in my company
20:38
Whoa. Me too now that I think about it.
same
But then again my company mostly employs aerospace engineers
I started my apprenticeship in august
I am the absolute worst possible employee that my company has ever had.
sncorp.com I work here :D
Such smart people, great company. 10/10 recommend
20:40
My company is close to my home, is paying me well, and I have great hours
there is nothing more I want of a job
work is fulfilling and interesting too
20:53
@Shog9 no, it doesn't, perfection is an unachieveable ideal; more accurately, you could say practice makes progress, but CBA may make hat moot.
you're making moot hats? I'll take one.
I have more nipples on my body than everybody else who works for my company, combined.
sounds like a matter for HR
Or a doctor
20:56
Hm. I do touch my entire HR department's nipples in the shower every day.
I can't tell if you're unemployed or just a single man comapny
could be both
if he wasn't unemployed before, he will be soon
Are you hiring?
I'll bring a new set of nipples to the company
Qualifications: Must be Jason C.
Job Description: Being Jason C.
20:58
Plot twist: I never claimed the nipples on my body were mine.

@Shog9 blame teh mobiles!
Two are. The rest... that's for me to know.
Mobil, previously known as the Socony-Vacuum Oil Company, is a major United States oil company which merged with Exxon in 1999 to form a parent company called ExxonMobil. It was previously one of the Seven Sisters that dominated the global petroleum industry from the mid-1940s to the 1970s. Today Mobil continues as a major brand name within the combined company, as well as still being a gas station sometimes paired with its own store or On the Run. The former Mobil headquarters in Fairfax County, Virginia, were used as ExxonMobil's downstream headquarters until 2015 when ExxonMobil consolidated...
