I have tried pizza in a few different countries. I have to say, Italian pizzas are slightly better. Although, when hungry, $6 pizza hut/dominos pizzas are as good >_<

dominos are a lifesaver

@tchrist aww

You know Chicago: they prefer weasel words.

Visual Studio takes so long to install. And it installs all sorts of stuff I don't want.

Like Visual Studio.

12:05 AM
Well yeah...

user202362
I mostly have domino's nowadays - because their pizzas are always on specials. I even have an app on my phone for domino's special offers ... >_< (~my cheapskate way of life~)

Those are all inedible, honestly.

Like the "Microsoft Visual Studio Javascript Service". What... is that?

But I have a epistemic problem needing solving. Shouldn't the opposite of push be pull?

you're pushing your stuff to the repo

12:06 AM
And now it's installing ASP.NET stuff... and I specifically told it not to install anything but the base packages and the Visual C++ stuff.

Then why do people not soda it?
@hichris123 Too many syllables.

MS has not been known for brevity.

And VS is still installing... even though I downloaded the whole 3.7 GB ISO.
So it's not a network slowness thing.

So. Very. Sorry.

12:11 AM
And I still have to uninstall VS 2013... (I'm upgrading) :P

I hear they get a lot of coke requests down in Atlanta
@hichris123 Microsoft has never had fast installers, and VS has a lot of installers
I used to just let 'em run over night

I just weep & complain while twiddling my thumbs.
"Visual C++ IDE Core Professional Plus Resource Package" try saying that 5 times fast...

12:37 AM
More than 30 minutes later, still no sign of completion...

@hichris123 VS 2015.1 Update?
I spent an hour today trying to figure out why VS2015 couldn't find a package that was on the ISO. I had to manually copy it off the image into the Package Cache.

@MikeEdenfield It's a fresh install of 2015, but yeah, it's installing 2015.1 right now.

something I installed on Thursday morning caused VS to break.
so I feel your pain.
had to uninstall/reinstall :(

12:52 AM
and somehow, uninstalling VS broke SQL Management Studio, so I had to do that too.
on the plus side, I got paid to stare at progress bars all day.

I assume you were productive and did stuff on SO in that time? :P

i closed a question
and i broke my chatbot.
but that was my fault, because I am too dumb to understand git

I managed to answer some SO questions today, for a change

I've apparently hit the wall on my ability to answer SO questions.

I thought I had too, but apparently not
you just gotta hang in there

12:59 AM

Finally done. :D

More important question, how are you able to see deleted questions list which are not yours? — Braiam 24 secs ago

@Braiam Why do you say a deleted question list?
he likely just had the active questions list open with realtime updates.

@hichris123 4 questions and not even from the same user?
btw, 3 hours in-between
c# and unity3d aren't that unactive

If you keep a tag page open & click the websocket page updater thingy you still get deleted questions on that list.
Unity3d doesn't get many questions...

you are not supposed to be able to do that...

why?
It's not like the websocket can slurp back the data it already gave to you...

4:05 AM
well, when it gave it to you it was already deleted

Oh I'm not talking about that.
I'm saying the question was asked, it went over the websocket, and then it was deleted.

that shouldn't change the appearance of the question in the question page

Isn't that the ignored tag appearance?
deleted questions look like a deleted post in search results, by the way.
Hints of red in the background.

sorry, Redshift made it looks like red
ignore that

What is redshift? Some thingy that changes your display colors?

Q: Why do they down rate?

HariharanI am a newbie and there are many newbie in Stack Overflow like me. Since we want help in the programming, we are asking here after we have tried so much. Some experts in that language put down rate on the post. But they should understand before down rating the question.This is a hectic situation...

Classic.
Too bad @Ren added the "do".

I did wrong what?

You didn't do anything wrong.
But "Why they down rate" is more 2009 than "why do they down rate".

I was really waiting for that question to be deleted until someone decided to answer and I realized it was no longer in the hands of the OP to delete. So I tried to make that question a bit more fit for keeping around.

@DJClayworth That's not true, the cranes for plain planes work mainly on the plains, but the cranes for decorated planes work mainly on grain. When grain is on the plain, the famed plane cranes mainly maintain their plain plane carrying usage, feigning that of their unplain planes. — bjb568 4 mins ago

@S.L.Barth Android is stuck on Java 7 for the most part...
And even then it's primarily Java 6 stuff IIRC.

@Quill Does Objective-C support lambda expressions?
Otherwise the unexpected winner is Windows Phone - it lets you develop in C#.
@hichris123 Yeah, had a look at SO. Seems it gets better at Android 5, but my phone is stuck with 4.

Not if there's no one there to hear them fall.
> SQL is the English of data processing. It has the nice feature that everyone and every tool knows it, which means the barrier to adoption is very low. @hichris123 Without a main(), there's nothing to run.
@hichris123 Well.
Maybe you have a main.o just waiting to hook up with empty.o.

I'd think of it as the programming equivalent of the empty string.

10:13 PM
But you can't make an a.out without a main.

Hm, that means if you were to define algebraic operations on programs (like in process algebra), the empty program would be the zero.
@tchrist ....and C spoils it by not letting you have that 0.

@hichris123 facepalm. DV, CV, move on.

@hichris123 Well, that's not the right way to think of it in Java. You have a class. If it has no public static short unsigned int main(), you can't call it.

10:18 PM
@hichris123 I'm not. I'm not out of CV's yet, either.

Remember: there's no such thing as a Java "program".
Just libraries, and you have methods in those classes.

There is an insidious contamination that comes from being inculcated by Java's complexity at a young age. People come to think that is the "right" way to be.

@S.L.Barth And, although rarer, the other way around.

@SimonKlaver That too :-(
I sometimes wonder if it's voting rings. But to identify these you need to identify a pattern.
I suspect that the downvotes on good answers are tactical downvotes.

10:37 PM
I usually just think some people are less capable of recognisinh good and bad questions.

True.... "Why are you downvoting this? This is a totally good question! Everybody needs to know what the best PHP framework is!"

Which meta thingy was it? Seems I missed it.

Pop Quiz
----------

1. A program that dies of a core dump is by definition a buggy program.

2. A program that dies of a 267-line stack trace after an exception is by definition a buggy program.

3. If the pop doesn’t, throw it out: it’s gone off.
Answers should be in the form of three binary digits.
Or 11, if you prefer.

@hichris123 would be a peaceful world if there where only 2 and 3 types :/

@S.L.Barth Calling something "Buggy" is pejorative and marginalizing in itself. The proper term is "functionally challenged" — Pekka 웃 Jan 28 at 13:21

@tchrist 0, 0, and what is 'the pop'? :P

Can you give an example of how an unbuggy program might dump core?
I mean, I can.
But there's no sport in it if I do.

Well, I once worked on an OS, and sometimes you just wanted to have the core dumped to test certain things. As it then precisely does as planned, it is not buggy but still dumps it's core.
Also, I don't have PS, so I can only open it in a text editor (that doesn't make anything clear).

@tchrist The definition in (1) is that the program should die of a core dump.
So, voluntary core dump. Without the usual segfault.
Without the program actually dying, just dumping a core and moving on.

Interesting.

....question is how to answer that in the form of three binary digits.
And to be fair, I don't know if it is possible to dump a core and move on.

Yes, I was thinking of voluntaries, but I hadn't thought about survival.
fork() && abort();

That's a good one!
Meanwhile reading that bit about Go. I've long wondered why programming languages don't support returning multiple return values, for just this reason.
Python does.

Nothing new under the sun: lisp and perl had it before python. So did others.
However...
When you're thinking of a stack machine with a singular register for a single return value, it becomes trickier.
Of course you can return a pointer.
Still, that has its own troubles.

It could probably be implemented as a bit of syntactic sugar.
You return a class that contains the objects to be returned.
The programmer never sees the class definition.

Return a class?

There could be a few pitfalls, concerning which instances you're returning.... I'd need to think about that.
Well, you have function Foo that returns a Bar and a status code.
Under the hood it creates class X { Foo f; int errcode; };, and it returns an instance of that.
And when the user wants to access the return values f or errcode, the system knows it's x.f and x.errcode, where x is the returned instance.
.....but, I have a hunch there are some pitfalls there. I'd need to think about it.

There are a lot of APIs that work that way.
r = fn(); if (r->err) { ... }

True. But it's still explicit.
Apparently Perl and Python got it right.
For Lisp, returning multiple values is somewhat inherent in the paradigm, I think.
Anyway, it's time to go. Thank you all for giving me food for thought again!

You can write ($good, $evil) = fn();
Sure.
People don't usually do that much. It's what Go does.
