Answer looks really strange, question is too broad
But I think the answer is technically valid for the question, so I wouldn't call it spam (in the traditional spam flag sense)

I beg to differ. I think the answer is spam. It's oddly worded fluff and links to scripts for sale.

here's how I look at it. I do not want the government to touch the Internet. But I'd rather the Gov't be able to whack ISPs than have ISPs able to extort money out of sites.

@NoviceSEMetaGeek Not sure you fully understand what net neutrality means

I, for example, have exactly two (real) options for internet service in my house. Both of them are evil.

And almost certainly price fixing

@Andy well one of mine is cable, so it almost doesn't count

Comcast basically has a monopoly here. And Comcast is basically the antithesis of net neutrality. So this is very much meh.

CenturyLink? Never heard of them.

@Doorknob Used to be Qwest

And, since this, I don't even have an option of broadband without paying $250 a month for a business line.

I wouldn't want packets prioritization based on money that is/isn't being paid to the ISP from the service providers
that's not how internet should work. Point.

@NoviceSEMetaGeek I'm Republican, my parents are Republican, and I honestly think that Democrats are, in general, doing it wrong. But I honestly can't read that with a straight face.

@Undo I seem to have a similar problem, except I can't read anything with a straight face.

@SantaClaus so, you have a geometrical face?

@ Undo "The simplest way to explain Obama’s plan is that he wants to turn the Internet into a government-controlled and regulated utility, like telephone landlines. The Internet service to your wireless smartphones, hand-held devices, laptop computers and to the corporate giant in your region would be classified under Title II of the Communications Act as a telecommunications service."

This “Communications Act” was passed in June 1934. Yep, that would be more than 80 years ago. The scope of the law was to dramatically change the manner in which telephone and radio communications were regul

@NoviceSEMetaGeek I have no doubt that Obama would love to control the Internet, but I don't believe this law allows him to do so.

@NoviceSEMetaGeek mm... government control or private interest control, which is better less worst?
@hichris123 I'm using the simile on the post

@Undo slippery slope strategy

copy cat
@NoviceSEMetaGeek How do you deal with this if the ISPs ignore the consumers and they have a monopoly in the area?

@Andy monopolies are illegal unless endorsed by gov't , if I understand correctly

4:10 AM
@Undo he already controls The Internet. The rumors about wanting to are just to throw folks off the trail.

you mean He

@bluet And the ISPs are granted said monopolies. Usually with promises. Yet, they don't deliver and generate billions.
But, you can't just "build a new ISP" to compete with the big boys. Start ups don't have the funding to build the infrastructure required (infrastructure that sits in my easement, I might add) without some kind of financing/government support

the only thing you need and you don't have to create your ISP is utility poles, and it's because those are considered private property

@Doorknob "granting government the ability to regulate the Internet will grant government control of the Internet. Uhh... nope." your major mental flaw

@Braiam You can bury conduit. Comcast buried a conduit in my easement 4 years ago (tore up my lawn...didn't fix it...). I can not get Comcast service. They refuse to service my address, despite their conduit being literally 75 feet from my garage door

@NoviceSEMetaGeek can you put it in a more succinct way instead of just links to elsewhere?

@Braiam This Ars article covers some things you need to start an ISP.

4:21 AM
@Andy I think you need permissions for those, and the investment would just skyrocket. Not feasible if you are just starting up

I think Google had to get permits to string fiber too. I can't find the article I remember reading though, so I can't back that up

@Andy I apparently have fiber lines running 30 feet from my back door, that the phone company laid with plans for future service in the area.
But, they do not offer any form of internet access here.

@Andy same problem between me and att!
i have comcast and my download speed is about 450 kbps

apparently I have a more competitive market: I can call and get 6 ISP to offer me service, the catch? all sucks in the speed/cost aspect (three of them also experience abysmal packet drops, lags and jitter)

Why is the word "voluntarily" there? Do we even know? They may have clicked "delete" facing the barrel of a gun. In any case, the text will never say "involuntarily", so the word adds no information.

@Shog9 I don't think I'd be annoyed if the conduit wasn't being utilized, but about a mile down the road it goes into an older neighborhood and they have fancy new (as of 3 years ago) Comcast service
