@Manishearth: wrong.
there is difference between open source and open source.
(in fact huge differences)

those sound pretty much the same to me
but I'm not a lawyer

@Manishearth sorry, but I understood it as "Twitch Plays Pokemon proposal" for a moment

@LaszloPapp I was saying this in reference to you "popular" comment -- I just meant that a popular software won't really be necessary; you just need to be able to get the policies to work.
Most of the open source alternatives out there work more or less the same way

@Manishearth: as I said before, everything is necessary for the success.
you cannot have crappy software with good policies, nor the other way around, obviously.

5:02 PM
!popular != crappy

@Braiam I would have too.

@Braiam lol

Sam
5:16 PM
Most of people from SO are from USA?

@Sam: probably not, at least based on my experience.

No. Most users are non-USA

so then from India ?

I think USA is the largest user-group, but doesn't have a majority.

Sam
however I'm happy about stopping bothering you here

5:19 PM
If we went by people who took the survey, US comes up top.

Sam
it was of no use

Bye then.

Though the colors for 3/5 of the groups are... kinda really annoying to tell which is which.

A more detailed list is here: blog.stackoverflow.com/2014/02/…

Sam
@Bart you are from usa?
if I can ask

here people speaks of everything?

Quick, I'm too lazy to search my brain for lowercase greek letters.

@Sam No, I'm not.

Sam
@Bart where are you from?

I'm Dutch, but I live in Switzerland.

Sam
5:30 PM
really?
we are not so far
I'm Italian but I live in Austria
in which side of Switzerland?

Geneva

Sam
is it easy to find work there?
for developers?

Banking, probably. Web-dev perhaps. Not so much in my domain.

Sam
@Bart you mean that is good to have experience with banking?

50 more minutes before I can get my 4th consecutive bounty running :|

Sam
5:32 PM
I'm a web developer..

Nah, there are a lot of development jobs in the financial industry here. But that's not my domain.

Sam
and the salary? are they really that good?
(I take 48K in austria)
6 years experience

They're quite good yes. But life here is very expensive.

Sam
@Bart sprechen sie deutch?

@Sam depends really heavily on which technologies you use, and your level of seniority

Sam
5:35 PM
yes I know. I went there for a we
@meagar now I'm using MVC + JQuery
6 year of experience
on c#

Ein bisschen. I can speak it reasonably well. Writing is terrible. And over here all is French and I speak mostly English.

I guess it also depends on your currency :p
Here, 48k Canadian dollars would be a little low

Sam
48K euro.. gross
40% of taxes / insurance I believe

Ah, yeah, so ~$70k?

Sam
2500€ every month net
no, less
65 918.4 U.S. dollars

Sam
ah, yes, you are right :D

Still, it's all moot
Even within my home province, tech salaries vary wildly

A: How to authenticate the GKLocalPlayer on my 'third party server'?

user3329949I am trying to implement the VerifyPlayer part in a objective C server that runs on OSX, not on iOS, there are just a few differences, and the thing is that SecKeyRawVerify generates a warning: "implicit declaration of function 'SecKeyRawVerify' is invalid in C99" And the functions always return...

My salary went up dramatically after moving to Toronto, but the cost of living went way up too
Comparing salaries between Canada and Italy is going to be even less useful without normalizing against cost of living

Sam
@meagar yes, it's not enough to compare the figure
it's also needed to compare the cost of the life
however the problem with italy
is that if you earn just 1200€
and you spare 10% of your money, buying a car which costs 30 thousand euro is veeeeeery long
:D

6:06 PM
@Sam 30,000 euros for a car - is this for a very nice car?

$40,000 is a pretty nice car :P

30,000 Euros is about $45,000 CAD, which would buy a reasonably nice car here

Does that Smoke Detector thing log what it posts? Someone might want to analyze whether that all-caps case is producing more false positives than true positives.
I realize all caps titles are generally problematic, but it seems like they are crappy posts more often than they are spam.
(cc @Undo, @ManishEarth, @hiChris)
Perhaps something could be added to that specific scenario.
"All caps title" + "something else the true positives have in common"

Afaik it does log it @jadarnel27

Q: Chrome extension like Firesheep

BarathVutukuriFiresheep is a firefox extension that allows you to hijack HTTP sessions of users sharing the same network.But this addon is discontinued from firefox addons. Even when i am trying to run it on older version of firefox,I am unable to use the extension. Could someone suggest me if there is a chr...

^ Not sure what to make of that

7:36 PM
Isn't it on topic for SU @Undo

It's on topic on SR too.
It's just... firesheep...
hijack HTTP sessions of users sounds kinda scary :P

@Undo is this the first time you've heard of Firesheep?

No, but it's the closest I've ever been to it :P

Hmm, that is also possible with firefox in dev debug mode

We had a big ol' deal about Firesheep when it came out, I remember. I could probably find the Meta discussions about it.

7:38 PM
All it does is scan the promiscuous mode network around you (so you have to be on wifi basically) and look for unencrypted HTTP headers
it's pretty basic
not so much a "hack"

I want to get my hands on this thing.

@BenjaminGruenbaum it will be upsetting if he wins the election

Q: Why doesn't the Stack Overflow team fix the Firesheep style cookie theft?

RookFiresheep sniffs the network looking for session id's and makes it very easy for an attacker to hijack this authenticated session. almost four times what we had in 2013

Winners are bluefeet, 0x7fffffff, and Bohemian.

Q: February 2014 Stack Overflow Community Moderator Election RESULTS

Shog9Stack Overflow's February 2014 moderator election has come to a close, sacrifices have been made at the altar of STV, and the 3 new moderators are: They'll be joining the existing crew shortly — please thank them for volunteering, and share your assistance and advice with them as they learn...

2 mods step down?

I love that it's called OpaVote
apparently so @rene
Wow, Bohemian was by far the winner
You made it to round 7 @Undo. Not bad

@rene Bohemian should go first

@FreshPrinceOfSO what?

that ^^^^^^

8:13 PM
What exactly is the benefit of this rounds system over multiplying the amount of 1-2-3 votes with that multiplier and adding them together?

@Bart worst candidate

Ah, but you did get that 2 actual moderators are stepping down? The jjnguy and NullUserException ...

@Bart socks are awesome

@Bart That's a shame

@Bart Wow

8:15 PM
@FreshPrinceOfSO that was totally not my point

Ha @jcolebrand, extraordinary claims require ...

@Bart obvious explanations?

So I guess... I'm fourth? opavote.org/results/6524971895488512/0
I'll take it! :)

A pretty close fourth

Let's just say that for the first time I'm not entirely certain about the outcome on at least some levels. But then again that might be because I only managed to vote for one elected mod this time @jcolebrand.

8:18 PM
I was fourth last year :P

That "Exhausted" guy got close as well. :p

"Threshold" would have been elected if they didn't keep dropping so many of his votes each round.

I'm totally tempted to write a Meta post demanding an explanation for Threshold's exclusion from moderation. It's an outrage!!

Recount!! Dimpled chad!! Hanging chad!!

SE should hire @animuson to help count the votes.

Ha, true.
Congrats though @meagar. Who knows, perhaps you'll still get in if someone else resigns.

I guess you never know :p

I wonder what made the votes go from 4.7% in the last election to 10.7% this election. Quite a significant difference.

sock-puppets?

8:36 PM
Nah, don't immediately believe that. You need 150 rep to vote.

I asked all my friends to vote :p

Would be a ton of work to make any significant difference.

I start today for the election in 2015
I'll do enough suggested-edits adding back-ticks to random words

I'll position myself in the queue to slap your sock-puppet around

Hmmm, that will not work then

8:40 PM
Well, given my lack of success in stopping bad edits getting through, I'm not sure you don't have a chance. :)
So let me be the first to congratulate you with your future moderator position @rene

Thanks @Bart you will be rewarded for that

I am reviewing now CV

too early

it is almost 2:12 AM here

the event starts at 21:00 UTC

8:44 PM
Hi everyone!

hey hichris

So? what is your point?

Congrats to everyone in the election!

Thanks @hichris123 you will be rewarded

Just noticed I misspelled election... sigh

8:46 PM
Does this mean my active custom flag from February 6th will be handled soon?

@rene I should be helping out in 15 ish minutes for the CV thingy...

Yes please

@jadarnel27 within 6-8 weeks at most

Nice. Unfortunately, I was asking for a post to be migrated. So once it hits the 30 day mark, there's pretty much nothing to be done haha =)

60 days

8:48 PM
Isn't the limit 60 days?
Darn it @Bart, beat me to it...

But maybe that's their new strategy. Just wait until the 60 days have passed and then simply decline your flag @jadarnel27. ;)

Ohhh. I really thought it was 30 days for migrations.
@Bart that's nefarious right there.
Moderators would do that.

@hichris123 T - 2:00

@rene I may be a bit late... I'll be in the room by 4:05 (waiting for primary computer to start up).

Ok

9:03 PM
Okay, will be in the room in one moment.

cool

Sam
9:31 PM
@meagar however 30K € for a car was an example

I have to assume that Shog9 is the one that put "BYOB" in the "Welcome the new moderators!" bulletin entry.

Sam
I mean that for guys from swytzerland that save 10% of their wage buying something that has a fixed price all over the world is more easy than it it for me...
the best for saving money would be:
go to switzerland or other contries with a big PIL per person
earn a lot of money
:p
then go back in italy and buy an home
do you know it?
@Bart: ?

9:55 PM
I still don't understand the answer given by Oli...

Sam
10:23 PM
Just a curiosity..
I am the only guy who complained with some stuff in this community?

Gah, you've got to be kidding me. Is that site dead? I submitted an edit the first time that one appeared

@Manishearth I thought you fixed the posting a post multiple times thing...

20 minutes. Not a single review.

10:53 PM
That's... sad.
@Bart Guess who decided to help you out... @Pops approved it. :P

Hah, nice.

I couldn't let something continue to be wrong on the Internet! I almost improved to make "sim" into "SIM" but thought that might look petty.

Gah, now I'm annoyed I overlooked those two. Thanks anyway @Pops ;)

But yeah, that was a "had five minutes to kill" special. And now I'm off to find dinner, or more likely start a long and increasingly bitter and whiny conversation about how no dinner options are good and why can't we settle on anything?

"351 days, 16 consecutive" This means I have been here for 351 days, right?

11:07 PM
Think so, yes. Btw, what gives with the 16 consecutive? Don't tell me you've got a life ...

It's on Programmers.SE, don't kid yourself
"454 days, 454 consecutive" still going strong

phew

I just had the Yearling badge on Programmers with 351 days, but appearantly that also includes the time before account creation
Although.. The text of the badge explicitly says "Active member for a year"

@Manishearth "SmokeDetector: Headless chatbot that detects spam and posts it to chatrooms." - I must just be pedantic. If crap detecting, in addition to spam detecting, is intended functionality, it's not documented =)
@JeroenVannevel That's how many days you've visited the site, not how many days you've been a member (if that's what you're thinking).

Ooooh. It's the amount of days you visited, not the amount of days since you first visited
That explains

11:14 PM
If you hover over your "Member for" number, you can see what specific date / time you created that account.

And "active" I think is defined by a 200 rep minimum ... iirc

That sounds right.

Oh. Right above that it says "member for 1 year"
I never saw it

Haha, nice.
