This country is cool.
I could see myself living here.
@Moshe back from Israel? Wow, that was a long trip. Nice.
Did you take a semester off at Uni?
The moment it was my turn in the immigration queue, CBP's database went down nationwide.
As a result, Uncle Sam doesn't have my biometric data.
A complete coincidence, of course!

Canada is cooler. (But only in the literal sense.)

No no, Canada definitely is cooler.

Justin Bieber does not make Canada cooler.
Carly Rae Jepsen on the other hand...
I'm going to bed before I say something stupider. Night.

4:36 AM
@Pekka where in california are you?

does someone know why this number appears on every "share" link? htt.p://meta.stackoverflow.co.m/q/<id>/**179635**
oh, is my user id

LOLLLLL

some kind of referer I guess

that's for the "shared link to [insert] IPs" badges
you can just as easily remove it if you couldn't care less

5:04 AM
@Purmou SF!

@Pekka I expected that. gonna visit any big HQs? :P

@Purmou if any want me, maybe! :)

@Pekka: answered your canned comment question with another potential feature i'd like to see

@Purmou interesting idea

i'd definitely use it, if that's worth much. i'm sure other people do the same thing.

5:17 AM
@Pekka - Yea, back. No, was on summer break.
@Pekka Ah, nice. Was in the area last week.
Good to hear you finally got something going here. Any specifics?

I think someone is misinterpreting "event"

A: I want a place which is nice and comfortable and should have all the facilities and also be easily accessible from Pearson International Airport.

SteveTry LeJardin Conference & Event Centre. We usually hold our Corporate events there. They offer pretty good food, have all the facilities and is also only a few minutes from Pearson International Airport. Have a look at their website for more details http://www.lejardin.com.

Q: How to calculate correctly in php?

Kerc$total = 30 - $nr1 / 13 - $nr2 - 6 * $nr3 - 3 I know we learned that in school but what is first (+ or - or * or /), where are the brackets or do i even need them ?

Why? Why? *breaks down and cries*

You're indicating that the code is not formatted as such, right? Terrible. A shame for such a perfectly fine and reasonable....a who am I kidding.

And somebody upvoted it.

1:26 PM
@TimYiJiang If global warming is caused by pirates, as you say, and @jcole is a pirate, as @Shog9 says, then it stands to reason that @jcole is causing global warming.

In fact, global warming is caused by the absence of pirates. The more pirates the better
Know your science

Yup, what @Bart said. This obviously means that we should all become pirrrrates and sail under @jcolebrand's flag!

@Moshe it's true, I cause global warming. You guys have been keeping it rather cold around here, and I don't care for that.
Obviously e comes after d, so I need something that's more than cold

It's always fun to open a proposal on Area 51:-) I haven't often been able to do it, but...

1:47 PM
So what did you open?

I'm gonna guess:
23
Space Exploration and Technology

Proposed Q&A site for spacecraft operators, scientists, engineers, and enthusiasts, to discuss the building, launching, operating, history, and future of space technology.

Currently in definition.

(since it was six days ago)

That would be correct.
It's chugging along, slowly but surely.
Almost have the first sample question with a 10 score:-)

2:04 PM
Ha, interesting. Though I know nothing about it.

Still, I'll hope someone around here can join in. I've found that A51 seems to work best if you work on drumming up support for the site everywhere you can.

Get John Carmack interested...he has his followers. ;)

I'll take anyone I can get:-)

Q: I'm on vacation in NYC. Can I visit/tour the Stack Exchange Headquarters?

chownTo make this question less localized: "If one is in New York City, is it possible to tour the Stack Exchange Headquarters?" Original Question (7/14/2012): I live in Los Angeles (Orange County actually) and this is my first time in New York City! My girlfriend and I are staying in a friends...

I'm a little surprised I got to link that twice in two days.
Also, @Pekka, it's impressive that you secured Internet access for yourself and all, but what are you doing here?! Get out there and enjoy your surroundings!

@PopularDemand I guess I never thought that SE headquarters was in NYC...

2:18 PM
I guess that @Pekka 's idea of vacation simply comes down to using the internet in another country....

@Bart wait, there's another definition?

@Pearsonartphoto I should post a new Meta question, "I'm on vacation in Duluth. Can I visit/tour the Stack Exchange HQ?" and self-answer it with "No, because SE HQ is located in New York, NY." Then repeat for every other first-, second- and third-tier city I can think of.

I wouldn't recommend it...

A: What currently makes an Area 51 proposal successful, and what should make it successful?

PearsonartphotoWhat makes a site successful? Finding a community of users already within Stack Exchange, who are willing to put a bit of time and effort into the process. A short proposal/ commitment time, made possible by #1. A clearly defined scope, that can attract a reasonable number of users. A scope whi...

That freehand circle was drawn for a joke, but the actual location of SE is just a few pixels up and to the right of it, on Exchange Plaza.

2:22 PM
If I ever make it to NYC, I might be tempted to stop in...
Of course, the answer is that I can't stop in, so...

I forsee a long CW answer to that question where people post whether they were invited in or not, with a long list of their rep/badges/modships at the time. "Okay, so it looks like you need a total of 200k network rep, where MSO rep only counts half, first diamond counts for 80k, second diamond counts for 30k, further ones count for 10k and an SO diamond counts triple. And the tiebreaker is whether you have more than ten gold badges."

@PopularDemand what the crap, they bought an entire plaza? how much VC money did they get? :p :s

Hmmm. By that criteria, I might almost qualify...

@PopularDemand "What can I do when I'm disallowed access to the SE headquarters?" .... "Hmm, do you have any deleted questions? We don't know exactly what factors into that decision, but..."

Q: How to check if the user typed "yes" string

Ikechi AnyanwuI want to see if the user typed "yes" (which has been assigned to yes string variable) string yes = "yes"; if (yes == "yes") How can I do this?

That's just plain amusing

2:47 PM
A51 says my reputation is 43.5K, plus 2 moderators(110K). Guess I'm not quite to the level to get a SE invite...

3:10 PM
@PopularDemand Oh, I am, I am! At the same time though, I'm cutting myself some slack and being lazy, it has been a very demanding two months.
@Bart it's a FIBER OPTIC CONNECTION, man! You're saying that is not a tourist attraction?

@PopularDemand Admittedly Fog Creek's offices are a bit cooler anyway, since Michael Pryor has a fish tank built into the wall. :P

wishes Elmo would stop creepily hovering around him.

@TimStone Ooooh, look at you, all knowing things about Fog Creek's offices and such, how fancypants.

@mootinator ...That might warrant some elaboration.

@Moshe Oh, no no, it's just a vacation mainly, although I will try to say hello at a couple of places I've been interested in for a long time... I'm pretty comfortable with my current studying setup though, and the year in the US it will get me, and it wou

3:16 PM
@Pekka Fair enough. I will admit to having visited a foreign Apple store once. Played around with an iPad... visited SO. Didn't think it was a good idea to log in, though.

(continued from above) ld take a really good offer for me to deviate from that.

@TimStone He's a creepy looking low-flying mylar baloon that until very recently was settled nicely on the ceiling.

@Pekka Oooh, take some pictures for us.

@pop heh! Yeah, I know what you mean. :)
@Bart I will.

@mootinator Oh, that would be pretty disturbing.

3:22 PM
But it's SO FOGGY right niw
I will have to leave the city of San Francisco to take pictures of it.

4:15 PM
I have a question about Grails.
What's SO?
BWA HA HA

@Pekka :-)

Kevin Montrose on August 21, 2012

Over the last 4 years we’ve built up quite a bevy of moderation tools here at Stack Exchange.  We’ve got closing, editing, deleting, flags of all sorts, voting, commenting, review queues, and more.

Plus our super secret mod tools.

These all work great, but all of them require action after a post is made.  In a perfect world, we’d catch every post that ends up closed and deleted or voted down to a negative score before they ever showed up on the site.  Less work for the community, less work for the moderators, and more consistent help for those unfortunate bad under-educated posters. …

@Moshe Oh come on, I don't need another temptation not to do work-work.

4:57 PM
Dear internet, hurry up and do my work for me.
Sigh.
Apparently it doesn't work that way.

@mootinator But it should.
...But actually it probably shouldn't.

lol

5:47 PM
At this point, I think I'm going to have to abandon what I'm doing and try something else entirely :/

@mootinator Almost lunchtime over there I take it? That's usually what I think right before lunch...

Hmm, that's no fun. So far today I haven't been able do anything, since I can't focus for some reason.

@Bart Very perceptive.

See, works every time

Frustrating the heck out of me: stackoverflow.com/questions/12059279/…
Nothing a little looking at source code won't fix, I guess.

5:59 PM
Pff, wish I could help you there, but I have no clue whatsoever about Grails

Neither do I, I just fake it ;P

6:13 PM
@mootinator Gonna try jQuery?
@mootinator - Posted a comment.

Yeah, I saw that.
I think it might actually be a bug.

6:59 PM
Is SE Chat available as a standalone application for your own server?

No.
I vaguely remember balpha -- the developer -- saying it was too tied into the network engine's internals, but I'm not sure where... looking.

@PopularDemand That's interesting because the QA platform is available on its own, right?

No, Stack Exchange is closed-source.
There are open-source clones available, though.

Ah

A: Stack Overflow clones

MatI've just looked into all the open source implementations mentioned, to summarise: Most active that look like the best bets (as of Jan 2012) shapado Ruby, mongomapper and mongodb. @PopularDemand Thanks!

it is too tied into the network engine's internals
@balpha Excellent service there, thank you.
@dnbrv No problem, good luck.

@PopularDemand I'm a UXD and it annoys me how bad IRC clients are yet all OSS projects use it for chatting. Obviously, HipChat or Campfire aren't an option there.

If you say so... I've never heard of HipChat or Campfire.

@dnbrv I and a couple guys started working on one, for a 48 hour code competition. We've all three been too busy to keep it up, but one of these days I'll have some serious free time and I'll redo it. I can point you at the source if you wanna get in touch with the one guy with the free time to work on it. We were gonna do a completely OS clone of SE Chat without the SE integration
@PopularDemand they're ok

7:07 PM
@jcolebrand That would be wicked awesome. Do you have a GH repo I can follow?

@jcolebrand Wow. Hadn't been touched in a year. Time is the killer of all OSS...

7:25 PM
@dnbrv I believe I told you that we weren't working on it
I'm not sure where that got lost in translation. What you see there is the result of a 48 hour competition, with three people who never worked together before, just working over Skype, from three countries, two in Europe.

@PopularDemand: For the record, I did look at his post history first. Not that that makes it any less amusing.

Oh, I didn't bother with that. I thought it was funny the way it was, and that was enough for me.

What's a USN byte?

Related to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USN_Journal @jcolebrand
I think

Could be a good SU question. There doesn't seem to be a dupe.

Tim answered it
@Bart that's the one

Current item at today's bacon-themed woot-off: 120GB SSD for $68.99.

That's exactly the model I have. I'm happy to have paid twice the price and enjoyed it for 18 months already.

You're using an SSD that's lasted for 18 months? Suuuuuuuuure. Pull the other one, it has got bells on.

Or was it three times the price? I can't even remember now. But it's worth whatever it was.

7:53 PM
I'd love one of those fast PCIe SSDs
but the good ones are still way too expensive...

Weren't they in the $1500 range or something ludicrous like that?

yeah
"better" (server-grade) ones are >3€/gb
but there are some that are actually pretty affordable.. they apparently require proprietary drivers though

8:39 PM
@jcolebrand Sorry. I didn't mean to offend you. I meant to say "lack of time is the killer of all OSS". I'm looking forward to see the final release.

@dnbrv you don't offend

This human verification thing is getting VERY VERY annoying :-\

reCaptcha doesn't seem to working anymore anyways
We recently had a flood of spambots at our clan forums that were getting past the email verification and the reCaptcha check.

i keep getting the verification thing.... it is getting very annoying :-(

@animuson "at our clan forums" what forums?

10:21 PM
Oh dear.
