@Starship my reading is it's gonna flag a bunch of extra stuff.
Shouldn't be harmful
00:17
@M.A.R. come to singapore :D
@M.A.R. And literally robo-review. And write questions. And "a bunch of extra stuff" could very turn out to be just about every post.
@Starship I can't go into details (natch) but I get a general feeling they're just throwing things at the wall to see what sticks, until (prosus?) upper management loses interest
But I do think (most) moderators are going to pretty much be against it
@JourneymanGeek what does "natch" mean?
naturally
@JourneymanGeek Why? What info would you have about SE upcoming plans that a normal user wouldn't (unless they've messaged the mods about this, which would then make it strange that they didn't post on meta)
00:20
@Starship we get previews of things
In theory, this means we can tell them when they're making mistakes, and mitigate some of the damage
I think the question drafts is something they tried on SO before and failed gloriously?
00:38
@JourneymanGeek I seem to recall that too but I cna't find a link

@JourneymanGeek I though the purpose was to make you aware of "falling shoes" ahead of time so that you can feel miserable knowing that you tried to warn them and they ignored you....
10:14
@AndreascondemnsIsrael yours!
@Marco ah, that is correct! :D
@M.A.R. what about alcohol?
Here it's without any limits, not forbidden in Judaism.
@M.A.R. dunno about neither of those, but all in all we're currently about 20% extreme religious, 20% extreme non-religious, and the rest are in between, which is fine.
Someone is using lunch to catch up on pings? ;)
:D
Actually no lunch yet. :(
10:42
@ShadowWizard oh noes
I just had mine and I'm still hungry :(
@Tinkeringbell so have another one! :D
11:01
@ShadowWizard "But what about second lunch?"
@ShadowWizard That sounds unsafe! My shadow is not trustworthy! He's my evil worse half! Lurking in the dark, deceiving your mind, playing games with your conscience and perception. If he gives you support, it can mean no good.
Ok, well, that is a lot of messages for a topic I don't invest in anymore.
@Starship Robo-reviewing refers to the action of reviewing items as if you were processing items on an assembly line; it means you are not actually reading each item to properly review it; you are mostly just clicking the same button over and over again.
@Starship That is what generative AI (GPT or other text-based output models) does. That is not a definition of AI or ML.
@Starship Since there are different kinds of AI/ML, you can have ML without it being generative.
@VLAZ re-lunch?
@Starship It's not; a robot reviewing doesn't mean it's robo-reviewing. If the robot is sufficiently sophisticated, it's not robo-reviewing. Smokey is a robot. It's not robo-reviewing, at least not if the term carries the same meaning as the negatively loaded use has here.
@AndreascondemnsIsrael but perhaps that's who I was all along! evil laugh
:D
@AndreascondemnsIsrael +1
@Starship I don't see anything in the quote that implies ML would be responsible for handling the entire pipeline.
@Starship Many of the complaints about SE's endeavours and ideas with using AI/ML for content creation, moderation and curation, has been a mistrust that SE would use the community to train their commercial tools for free, then discard of the community when no longer needed. That is a valid concern, but I haven't addressed it here.
11:15
Legit use of AI/ML by SE would be having it train on correct reviews, then scan posts and add a new review queue of "suspected posts that might need review". Or something like that.
If that would give high rate of true positives, it's a success. But, chances for that are pretty low, sadly.
Anyway, I really don't care about more SE/community drama now. That's all the resources I was willing to pour into it.
@AndreascondemnsIsrael you poured a lot, now you need to Rest.
@ShadowWizard I want to be RESTful.
yup
Better than PainFul.
@Starship generative AI works by prediction. Well, statistical models too. But not all AI. Moreover, the AI field is quite wide and not all parts of it are about...well, AI. Quite a lot of it is statistics and heuristics from past data. That's how a lot of other spam systems work - they collect reported infractions and then based on this predict how much a given item is likely to be more of this. E.g., spam filters in emails do this trying to match past spam reports to new incoming emails.
11:17
poor Star, so many pings! :D
@ShadowWizard I know seirously...
Reporting an item strengthens the system against things that look similar to it (well, slightly more complex, since even simpler system may try to cluster likely problematic terms. But details are not quite relevant for the overall concept of "mote similar to past bad items" = "more likely to be treated as a bad item")
@AndreascondemnsIsrael I also want to point out that another complaint I'd have is that I'm often not sure SE are capable of creating a feature. Even if the tech they talk about is, in theory, fit for the task they want to apply it to.
That doesn't only extend to their AI endeavours, by the way.
@AndreascondemnsIsrael I know that. The reason that robo-reviewing is a problem is because there is actual human evaluation taking place, just clicking buttons semi-randomly (or repeatedly clicking the same button). AI would likely do the first.
@Mithical Isn't Washington DC bordering the ocean? I do imagine running on water is intense. I'd wanna try.
@AndreascondemnsIsrael what is "That is what generative AI (GPT or other text-based output models) does. That is not a definition of AI or ML." replying too
11:23
^^ Doesn't have to. It can build up a trust value for a given editor. The more good contributions they have, the less votes needed to approve their stuff, to a minimum of 1. Although, it can also extend to 0 (love me some non-rep-based privileges). A rejection can be a major loss of confidence - if they get 1-2 rejections, that might drop the confidence to where they need the normal 2 reviewers.
@ShadowWizard @VLAZ I think the main issue is that every time "ZE BLOGZ" sprouts some AI nonsense pipedream, they ALWAYS talk about their LLM (trained with our contributions, but that they often forgets). So, every time they say "we will use AI magic to do this" everyone thinks back to the only thing they seem to know. ChatGPT like LLM. And a LLM will NOT detect spam in a reliable way.
@ShadowWizard Oh, no, are you the demon on my shoulder?
@Starship The message it's marked as a reply to.
The same can be done in reverse and build up a "mistrust" confidence to make it easier to reject a given editor's suggestion by requiring only one reject vote.
[cont] Now, had they mentioned an heuristic model instead, or some targeted machine learning... I guess many would have recognized that is what partially Smokey already does.
@AndreascondemnsIsrael I think it can be assumed that SE will use GenAI because thats what they always use...
11:25
Anyway..... GDPR Art 22
> The data subject shall have the right not to be subject to a decision based solely on automated processing, including profiling, which produces legal effects concerning him or her or similarly significantly affects him or her.
@Starship That is perhaps a reasonable assumption.
@AndreascondemnsIsrael Smokey doesn't review posts, it reports them in a chatroom. I wouldn't want Smokey in a review queue
Also worth noticing that...
> Paragraph 1 shall not apply if the decision:
[cut]
- is based on the data subject’s explicit consent.
@Starship well, I once had 100 pings in a row. So consider yourself lucky. ;)

@Starship ah it did ping, but once.
Awww...that would have really fun to annoy people with
You can ping up to 10 different users in one message though. (don't try :))
11:30
something like "If you don't want to be subjected to automated spam reviews and moderation please contact us by snail paper mail in the next 30 days"
@AndreascondemnsIsrael would break fast by chat rate limit. :)
@ShadowWizard What was that?
@balpha is smart, he put a rate limit in the early days, and it's really fantastic.
@ShadowWizard Why not
@Starship because most people won't like a random ping.
I do, but I'm not most people. ;(
11:32
@ShadowWizard I didn't mean that seriously
@ShadowWizard He was summoned.
@VLAZ What part of "only some of AI is related to AI" makes sense
@AndreascondemnsIsrael So he was 😈
I can ping e.g. @rene, @Pet, @M.A.R, @Mar, @Mitho, and @SPA just randomly sometimes, but even I get scared to ping some people. :-P
@AndreascondemnsIsrael no, it's on the Potomac river
11:33
@Starship Graph traversal is within the purview of the AI field. But it's not, you know, anything like artificial intelligence.
@balpha oh, hi there! :)
@VLAZ Why would SO have to make an AI? They love OpenAI so much theyll just use ChatGPT
OpenAI is more than just ChatGPT.
I think/hope.
@balpha Oh, no, you brought the dark evils of the shadows with you! What have you done, @Sha?! WE'RE ALL DOOMED!
11:35
@Starship I've not claimed SE will do anything specific?
@VLAZ "

@Starship wrong staff to ask, he's "only" a developer. The best, but still. :)
@ShadowWizard Yes so he might know if something is being developed
@AndreascondemnsIsrael I can't see what message that was marked as reply to
@Starship even if he does he won't/can't tell us, so no point asking.
And pinging random staff members about issues that are not directly relevant to their area of work / have expressed being open to such pings is strongly recommended against.
11:37
@Starship haven't read them yet, but I doubt that I'll know anything, and even if so, I probably wouldn't be supposed to comment
@Mithical well to be fair it's not random, balpha just arrived and wrote something.
@balpha ok
@Mithical Oh, well... oh... fine.
also, AI AI AI AI AI AI
(I think I'm allowed to say that)
@ShadowWizard I still sometime think that balpha is secretly BoltClock and therefore the one that for quite a bit had a Sunset Shimmer avatar...
11:38
@ShadowWizard "random" as in not previously involved with the issue at hand
@Starship Explaining how an AI system can work is a far cry from suggesting SE will be doing that. But also it's a correct refutal of what you claimed the system would do. Also, honestly, I don't even think a gen AI solution would do random actions. Mostly because that's not what gen AI does, much less ChatGPT. It produces text, it doesn't manipulate the browser.
@balpha oh no, you need pain AI killers?
@balpha Only if you end it with "Captain!"
@AndreascondemnsIsrael shoulder? Nope.
11:39
@ShadowWizard Demon in my... oh, no, I'm too scared to even think about it.
@Mithical ah, I see. Well I'm also not in favor of this, but it's not very "severe", IMO.
ok I read them and I have no idea of how the details on any of that are supposed to look like, so you'll indeed have to ask someone else 😄
Anyway happy שמחת תורה, @Mithical :)
@AndreascondemnsIsrael exactly.
:-D
ETA for lunch: 17 minutes
@ShadowWizard Can't. Not a hobbit.
Also: busy
@Tinkeringbell but.. hungry!
The rumblings from the poor stomach would make it hard for you to concentrate on work. ;)
@SPArcheon-onstrike hmm but that means he was like, ah, 10 years old when starting to work for SE? ;)
11:44
@Tinkeringbell These are the times I find myself regretting the fact that Tinkerbell has never been included in the "Disney Princesses" franchise despite even Vanellope making the cut.
Can't have it all.
So many lost opportunities for calling Tink "Princess Tink" :P
@VLAZ It produces text that is more or less semi-random. It will be related to the topic you asked about usually but not usually correct.
@Starship incorrect does not mean random.
Those are two different things, in their very base.
Random is what I tend to employ.
11:49
Random is often incorrect, sure. But, it doesn't mean you can refer to something being incorrect being random, or vice versa.
Speaking of which, anybody wants some licorice?

@ShadowWizard @VLAZ I think the main issue is that every time "ZE BLOGZ" sprouts some AI nonsense pipedream, they ALWAYS talk about their LLM (trained with our contributions, but that they often forgets). So, every time they say "we will use AI magic to do this" everyone thinks back to the only thing they seem to know. ChatGPT like LLM. And a LLM will NOT detect spam in a reliable way.
@AndreascondemnsIsrael ah, see? Perfect example for something totally random. :D
e.g. @M.A.R. what book you read these days? (example for random question. ;))
@ShadowWizard Random as in its not like it will always give the same incorrect answer to a question
11:51
@Starship but, that's not random. It would be based on whatever it was trained on.
@ShadowWizard I spent a week in a Turkish hospital.
@AndreascondemnsIsrael Why
@Starship Food poisoning.
@AndreascondemnsIsrael Fun
@Starship Indeed.
12:45
@ShadowWizard :D
@ShadowWizard Tell us some news
@SPArcheon-onstrike Blegh.
Don't do that.
@Tinkeringbell What? Don't you love the perfectly fine values at the core of every Disney Princess, who most of the time struggle to have little to no agency until the "Prince in Shinning Armor" comes to make their day better? Even Mulan comes out as an idiot who loses her mind for the first not-ugly-looking male in the army
I'll allow that as a rhetorical question that I won't interact with further.
13:00
@Tinkeringbell Actually, I was mostly ironically agreeing that the "values" presented by most Disney princesses... are kinda bad.
So... I decided to clean my main PC after too long...
So I totally agree on the "Blegh"
It was working fine when I took it apart
I feel like this isn't a good thing
(I eventually got it booting, but I suspect the pump on the AIO is dodgy)
@JourneymanGeek the cobwebs you removed... those were part of the motherboard, you silly dog.
@SPArcheon-onstrike actually stratified dust
you familiar with coralcolor or cyberclean?
the gunk people use to clean keyboards?
that's after the cleanup
13:10
@JourneymanGeek There’s a distinct lack of fans in there.
@JourneymanGeek What's that?
Also, is that the sound of the pump? It sounds like it’s running dry.
Actually, it sounds like a flamethrower.
@SPArcheon-onstrike How’d you even get spiders in there.
IS IT CHAT UPGRADE TIME?
@Spevacus Really?
Maybe? Possibly? Lord balpha is at the wheel of chat's fate. Only he decides whether armageddon comes.
13:14
OMG
Then the day of the rapture arrived
Nothing ever upgrades, it only deteriorates.
@AndreascondemnsIsrael Not even you evolve?
Why was the SmokeDetector report removed? It is not clear why.
@ТymaGaidash Why do you think it was removed?
@ТymaGaidash If the post it reported was deleted within the window for self-deletion, SD will self-delete the message to save transcript space in this room.
voila

UnihedronThere are ants in my laptop keyboard again. Ant Hill Inside™

@AndreascondemnsIsrael possible.
It randomly goes normal, which has me confused
and when that happens, the processor immediately goes to 90+ apparently
@AndreascondemnsIsrael It has 3 :D
good enough IMO
@Marco dirty cyberclean
Huh
its stuff that works very well for cleaning keyboards and crivaces
its a sort of goop.
also
best. review. ever.
@JourneymanGeek Wow, it's daunting
It actually works better than it did for him :D
It's the dauntest thing I've ever seen in my whole life
@JourneymanGeek He really couldn't clean anything from what I saw.
13:46
You need to push it down into things
and not keep rolling it in your hands all the time :D
yeah
@JourneymanGeek Also know as "How to sell Magic Slime to an adult 101"
@SPArcheon-onstrike ah so...
I can't get the 'real' stuff for months at a time
so I tend up hoarding what I can get till its really gross :D
I mean, it works really well for what I use it for
41
Q: What's the best way to get ants out of laptop keyboards?

wayneWhat's the best way to gets ants out of a laptop?

cross site dupe :D
@SPArcheon-onstrike Delicious. Back in school, some of my classmates had some laptops I didn’t dare touch. Now, they did ask me for help sometimes… at which point I asked them what the heck is wrong with their laptop hygiene habits.
@JourneymanGeek Did you check for leaks?
none I could find
13:59
@AndreascondemnsIsrael Not all germs are harmful.
@JourneymanGeek That’s only 20% of mine.
Yes, but my PC is very demure, very mindful
@JourneymanGeek Apparently not.
Well no
now its working normally
which is sort of worse cause I don't know if I should swap out the cooler or not
@JourneymanGeek Wouldn't a vacuum cleaner be more efficient for cleaning?
14:02
Was that the cheap 120mm AiO?
Its the thermaltake I've been running on my 9th gen since day 1
Thanks, that wasn’t enough to know which one it is.
14:05
Wait, is the pump the highest point in the loop? It looks like the radiator is mounted vertically, with the pipes connecting at the top?
yup
only way it'll really fit, and never had issues with it
I know its 'bad' but its generally worked?
Then it’s probably reached end of life, if you’ve had it for that long. The liquid can probably no longer fill sufficiently, making the pump run dry.
Ya, but if it works now I can shop around a bit
rather than needing something now
You do risk damaging the CPU and the motherboard if the cooling regularly stops working.
I mean, in theory I do have a LGA 1156 cooler spare, but its meant for a laptop grade processor
@AndreascondemnsIsrael yes, I am aware
it broke today and I witchcrafted it into working :D
I just spent the entire afternoon beting it into working so I think decisions can wait till tommorrow :D
14:08
You can try taking the radiator/fans out, and temporary connect it at the top (if you can tape it on the outside with the case cover off), to test if it works fine like that.
Oh
it works fine now
as long as I don't move the PC
Sure, give it 5 more minutes. ;)
IF it dies again, I have something I can use right behind me. in theory
Or, ehm, rotate the whole case onto the back. :D
oh putting it on its back is a sure way to trigger the problem
I THINK If I remove and install the heatsink while the case is vertical, about half the time, it works correctly all the time.
14:10
Weird. That should mean the pump is at the lowest point.
My first guess was bad bearing
or its an asetek so it gets clogged and maybe moving it unclogs, reclogs it
Did you unmount the radiator to check if it’s been damaged, so the liquid can’t properly flow through it, and gets stuck?
Right.
I'd unmounted it to clean it
Looks fine
Also, honestly, 5 years is pretty close to what I consider design life on PCs sooo
if it did die, I'm like "ok, sure"
Should last for at least 15, ignoring the fact that it gets heavily outdated. But, undee heavy and prolonged load, like for game-playing, 5 is probably reasonable… to a certain degree.
My PS2 is 20 years old, I still use it!
The laptop, that lasted for 6 years.
@JourneymanGeek Welllllll..... the PS5 pro is coming out soon.
14:16
I mean, I expect parts to start failing
@SPArcheon-onstrike Can I replace my PS5 with it?
My PC does see heavy use so fans or coolers going bad is, well, not a big deal
AiOs at least aren’t particularly expensive. But I don’t like the waste it leads to. It’s not possible for you to repair, is it? Perhaps swap the liquid?
@AndreascondemnsIsrael "Just" 799$ and you have to buy the disk drive separately for 80$.... or you could if every disk drive hadn't been bought by "I-Wish-You-Bad-Luck" scalpers selling them at 200$ now.
@SPArcheon-onstrike I was looking at PSVR2. I guess I’m better off putting my money there.
14:18
so the full console now would be 800$ + 200$ drive.
@AndreascondemnsIsrael I mean, if it runs, but is suspect, I can look at options
@AndreascondemnsIsrael I hope the launch is going to flop horrible and cost them tons of money.
Its not really designed to be refilled I think
the chinese one has a filler cap :D
@SPArcheon-onstrike Why?
@JourneymanGeek Might be some option…
@AndreascondemnsIsrael because the 800$ price is simply TOO HIGH... and they didn't even include a 80$ drive well knowing that people would then have to buy one from scalpers at 4 times the price
Not a single gaming site is defending that price
Even ign - a notorious Sony fan - is calling the price bull....
14:21
hmm
Bit more involved than I'd like unless I was keeping it as a spare
@SPArcheon-onstrike Got my 2TB drives for 2100 NOK; they’re both compatible with PS5. But I’d prefer 4 TB. Way too expensive. Especially 8 TB… 1 TB is affordable enough, but that’s so small these days.
@AndreascondemnsIsrael 'normal' sata drives or some special sauce drives?
@SPArcheon-onstrike I don’t get it; I was under the impression PS5 Pro would have 2 TB built-in?
@JourneymanGeek « Kingston FURY Renegade PCIe 4.0 M.2 NVME SSD 2TB, 7300/7000 MB/s»
14:24
@AndreascondemnsIsrael ah, so normal SSDs.
@SPArcheon-onstrike tbh, my GPU cost more than that, this is a pretty good machine, and honestly dosent' 'need' an upgrade
Same, and I would’ve gotten a 4090 for approximately the same price (4080S) in certain pre-builts. The rest of the computer would’ve been worse, though.
Pre-builts cheaping out. The shop did sell a similar pre-built to mine, in the same case. That one costs 20 000+ NOK more than mine, so, you get it.
Oh, shiny aside (and it was an upgrade), I like building PCs? :D
If that's not obvious by now
@AndreascondemnsIsrael you skipped the previous messages. And @Andreas too.
The 200$ "drive" is the disk reader drive.
as in, blue ray disk reader
start your goodbyes -- if everything goes well, chat.meta will be the old .NET Framework version for about another hour and then never again
Which is sold separately because those bas nice guys at Sony are trying to push their "digital only" agenda (sell digital games at the same price of the disk version without paying the disk cost - not a single digital game costs less than the retail version)
14:34

Q: Chat upgrade incoming! No feature changes, but major under-the-hood work

balphaTL;DR We'll be deploying a new version of Chat that has significant under-the-hood changes. Ideally you won't notice anything, but just in case, here's what's happening: On Wednesday, October 23, around 15:30 UTC, chat.meta gets the new version. I'll be in the Tavern when I deploy the change, so...

@balpha context ^
IT'S TIME
... Well, almost.
HOLD ON TO YOUR PANTALOONS.
@JourneymanGeek thank to this idiotic move, scalpers managed to get their dirty hands on the entire disk drive stock and sell them for around 250$

@balpha We seem to have survived
no it's another hour
we're still on the old version
(I'm in a meeting)
@balpha Bleedin summer time
@balpha I mean, with no WB you could have used the Chichen instead.
@JourneymanGeek But do you have fans to clap for you?
14:40
@balpha here goes any hope for the switch to be made on schedule. See you in 6-8 hours instead :P
@SPArcheon-onstrike I'm not a real user though 🐔☹️
2
@SPArcheon-onstrike Oh, well, that sounds a bit expensive here.
@AndreascondemnsIsrael that is the Anniversary Scam edition, which costs even more
@SPArcheon-onstrike But it’s a bundle, so it comes with way more content.
So, PS5 Pro (10190) + disk reader (1479) = 11669 NOK. Expensive enough. I guess I’ll stick to the one I have.
Is the new stand in aluminum? That’s better than the ugly plastic one.
14:51
@AndreascondemnsIsrael except the disk reader is NOT included. That is just the plastic cover, you silly pony
> DISC-FREE CONSOLE - Internet connection and an account for PlayStation™Network required.
Disc Drive sold separately.
@AndreascondemnsIsrael oh, sorry, I had your post wrong. You were summing the base price and the disk drive price. Ok.
Anyway the "more content" in the anniversary bundle is a second gamepad.
and then...

The most disappointing part of my PS5 is actually the white plastic covers. They look quite good in pictures and videos, but in person, they look seriously cheap. Like, very, very cheap.
@AndreascondemnsIsrael that is the "WC White" trend started by the IPhone
And I'll let you know I hate it
That white is perfect.... for restrooms.
Not for tech products
15:11
@SPArcheon-onstrike No, it’s the material, not the colour.
Besides, it’s been ages since Apple sold products with a focus on being white.
@AndreascondemnsIsrael yeah but before the IPhone mac users where like white fleas.
now the restroom white IPhone is a status symbol.
mhm, now you’re just being general anti-Apple again.
Anyway, I should fine something to cover those white plastic pieces in.
Unfortunately, I have no artistic qualities, so I can’t paint them.
«Fine»
15:28
@AndreascondemnsIsrael buy a faceplate
I bet you would like this one
@SPArcheon-onstrike Yes.
@SPArcheon-onstrike No.
@AndreascondemnsIsrael Apple chickened out. Clear plastic 3 eva
