whenever I see a title like this, my first instinct is to reply "no YOU solve this function"

@starball yeah, so I didn't read ALL the comments :D

2:05 AM
@JourneymanGeek You can, you have unlimited power :p
You didn't want a gif about it, @JourneymanGeek? I found it easy...
Didn't you*
Why the gipphy ones are not gifs?

@JourneymanGeek dishonour on your cow!

@JourneymanGeek something big and incredible.

and better get a comfortable chair then

8:01 AM
@JourneymanGeek Or a bunch of guns, ammo and canned food, and some transport that doesn't rely on fossil fuels :P

8:27 AM
Hey, you're not going to survive something big and incredible from a chair XD

At the risk of stereotyping and such...
I can get the fossil fuel free transport... cycle or clogs...
the guns, ammo and canned food is very american prepper :D

@JourneymanGeek I know. Though canned food is something the Dutch government recommends having at home for emergencies as well.
They recommend: Bottled water, at least 3 liters per person per day (*2 because you're supposed to care for yourself for 48 hours and then you're magically rescued). Canned food, dried fruits, nuts, a battery powered radio and power banks for mobile phones, a flashlight with extra batteries, candles and matches (I bet a lighter is okay too but...)

ammo tho?
@Tinkeringbell other than the water, and maybe the radio we probably have all of it :D

A first aid kit with instruction manual, blankets, a whistle to blow and let people know where you are, cash money, tools like a hammer, saw and pliers (why?), desinfectant, toilet paper, wet wipes, period paads, toothpaste and toothbrush (do I really need to put most of those in an emergency packet or can I just take the ones from the bathroom?), copies of identity documents and a list of important phone numbers (which ones are important?) and spare keys of your home and car...
@JourneymanGeek Not here, but then again guns and ammo are way more heavily regulated. In less regulated countries those could be good for hunting!

yup
also shooting something is hard

8:41 AM
@JourneymanGeek I don't buy bottled water, f- Nestlé. If anything is overpriced capitalism, it's bottled water.

bottled water, no

@JourneymanGeek I got to try with an 'air gun' on a party once, it actually went quite well!

I'm considering stucking a large bottle in the fridge cause the weather is murderously hot

Trick is to keep breathing except when you fire :P

I've shot actual guns at vaguely people sized things
yup
and gently squeeze the trigger

8:42 AM
Oh, you got bigger targets than me then, I got a 15x15cm piece of paper, something like that XD

further away I suspect
I want to say 100m ?

Oh yeah I guess mine was 20m or something
10 or 12 even.
I looked it up :P

....
I tried to... and its a 20 minute propaganda video :D

The shooting sports club is literally around the corner here.

yeah 100m

8:44 AM
I may one day walk over and say 'hey, I loved this years back, can I join and have a go again?'

I shot 155mm gun, does it count? :P
Range was up to 20km.

That's not a gun, that's a cannon.

depends, did you hit the target?
@Tinkeringbell if we're being pedantic, its technically a howitzer

@JourneymanGeek dunno, never saw the hit or miss, but if there wasn't yelling and shouting at us, it usually meant hitting fine. ;)

8:47 AM
@JourneymanGeek correct
The M109 is an American 155 mm turreted self-propelled howitzer, first introduced in the early 1960s to replace the M44. It has been upgraded a number of times, most recently to the M109A7. The M109 family is the most common Western indirect-fire support weapon of maneuver brigades of armored and mechanized infantry divisions. The M109 has a crew of four: the section chief/commander, the driver, the gunner, and the ammunition handler/loader. The chief or gunner aims the cannon left or right (deflection) and up and down (quadrant). The British Army replaced its M109s with the AS-90. Several European...

Fun fact, we literally don't have enough room to fire 155mm here so we need to go overseas

That's the one. ^^
@JourneymanGeek we have the Negev, vast area mostly desert, with sparse population, so most training is there.

I think we'd quite comfortably fit into one of your larger cities :D

@JourneymanGeek Can't you fire at a target in the sea?

8:50 AM
Used to consider Israel as small, so that's hard to grasp.

@DavidPostill @DavidPostill I think the indonesians might be a little unhappy at that

@JourneymanGeek I live 'near' the place where the military practices these kinds of booms. It's annoying at times, hearing the low booming all day.
Luckily it doesn't happen everyday. But the sound carries quite a bit.

we just have good ties with...

@Tinkeringbell what kind of booms? Shooting with guns? Or something bigger?

the indians (which was a bit of a surprise), the taiwanese (which annoys the chinese), the aussies (and going there for training is considered a bonus) and the kiwis

8:52 AM
@ShadowWizardLoveZelda The howitzers.

@Tinkeringbell I thought y'all demilitarised pretty heavily

And also other things.
@JourneymanGeek Doesn't mean there's not still taxpayer money going to boys and girls wanting their chance of murder :)

@Tinkeringbell I misremembered and thought we bought all your leopards :D

We're even getting new submarines apparently. Because we really, really need submarines for whatever reason. Never mind that those submarines never do anything like taking out Somali pirates or something.

(tanks)

8:54 AM
@JourneymanGeek Hahaha well you could've bought all the leopards (big cats) because there definitely aren't any left here :P

@Tinkeringbell So did we

@Tinkeringbell ouch, they do make lots of noise.

@Tinkeringbell technically, a sufficiently bored sub captain could play "you don't see me" with a hijacked container ship

as far as I can find though, there are no leopard tanks property of the Dutch army anymore. Any practising with those is done in collaboration with Germany. So could still be y'all bought the ones there were, there were 116 in 2010 :P

8:57 AM
@ShadowWizardLoveZelda Yup. Which makes me happy I don't live closer to the firing range.
It's already loud enough now XD

maybe they need to invest in a few of those

@JourneymanGeek umm... it looks like what Tink shared yesterday, in a way..... :P

Hahaha
Yeah, that's definitely a case of 'compensating' :P

9:15 AM
In other news, I'll finally be getting an answer to the question "Am I allowed to get solar panels by the (sort-of) HOA" tonight and I'm actually kinda nervous XD
I really, really want them, yet I'm kinda nervous others will say 'no'
(Or come up with such a convoluted scheme about ownership of said panels that getting some isn't going to happen)

@Tinkeringbell How much legal power do HOAs have in the Netherlands?

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog It's not exactly like a US HOA. It's called a 'VvE' and every apartment block is legally required to have one. The VvE is the 'legal entity' that 'owns' the outside of the building. So, if for example the roof starts leaking, it's everyone's problem to pay for repairs and not just that of the upstairs neighbors ;)
Since solar panels go on the roof, everyone has to agree that this is okay. But one of the neighbors already said some stuff that makes me think she isn't going to say this is okay. We can still override her if there is a majority that thinks otherwise, but I'm kinda worried she'll convince at least one other rather dumb neighbor and I can't get a good opinion on a third (and if she convinces the third too, there'd be a 50/50 split and no solar panels)

What sort of stuff?

ah, not the same as a HOA I think

Don’t you know that solar panels expose you to deadly X-rays?</sarcasm>

9:26 AM
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog Stuff about insurance, about the VvE needing ownership of the panels (which is a really, really bad idea legally)
@JourneymanGeek No, I deliberately said 'sort-of'. It's the closest thing in English I can think of though.
I mean, the VvE also 'regulates' my garden in a sense that if I let it get overgrown with weeds, they are allowed to start weeding themselves :P
Or hire a landscaper and make me pay
It 'regulates' the kinds of pets that we can have (no bees, pigeons or poultry) and if a pet is a nuisance, they can legally take action to that too.

I think we call it a management corporation strata title or something wierd like that

@ElementsInSpace And yeah, I'm not getting those XD
@JourneymanGeek VvE would translate to 'union/association of owners' or something like that XD

@Tinkeringbell essentially you have an elected committee of busybodies to handle things ya ?

@JourneymanGeek Yes, there's a few 'elected' (volunteered and no one else did) members that form the governance of this VvE. But every inhabitant of the apartment block is a member, and has to pay monthly fees. There's no opting out :P

9:33 AM
And since there's only six of us in this block, there's one 'president', one 'treasurer', and one 'administrative' person, and the other three of us are appointed as 'audit committee' (meaning we check the actions from the treasurer each year).

same thing :D
(though for 'public' housing we have a different mechanism)

Oh yeah, 'social' housing here usually means the corporation that owns the building is also the one that 'runs' the VvE

Ah, then there the 'town council' handles those things

Oh no, they privatized such things here long ago. After all, there's money to be made from something everyone needs.

@Tinkeringbell oh the towncouncil collects fees from us and hires someone to do it

9:48 AM
@JourneymanGeek Ah yeah. Over here that means taxes go to those corporations on a national level.

hmm this look familiar pretty sure they already had something very similar.
(USA map with a twist)
Probably running out of ideas already... D:
But still funny, for those who get the catch. :P
Where's everyone?!
pokes @M.A.R. to check if he's still alive
smells @rene to check if he's still a flower

smells @ShadowWizardLoveZelda and immediately faints

LOL
whoops
switching perfume
Or more accurate: starting to use perfume.
:-P

@cocomac what you think? ^
I mean, that was spam. But edited by spammer themselves.
Don't think search engines crawl revisions, or do they?

2:35 PM
@ShadowWizardLoveZelda Considering it's a one rep user who joined today, I'd advise a custom mod flag explaining what happened.

@cocomac hmm... did you send such a flag then?

@ShadowWizardLoveZelda Nope. If you want, I can though

@cocomac yeah, you'll probably explain it better. ;)
@cocomac also, no spam in profile, spammers usually have something there as well. So really odd.

2:58 PM
@ShadowWizardLoveZelda Done: custom flagged

Cheers!

Now let's wait for the mods... lol.

Ehm, that star bomb again.

5:28 PM
@ShadowWizardLoveZelda how many cheers exactly?
Instruction unclear
@ShadowWizardLoveZelda nope. This is an automated message.

@M.A.R. haha prove. ;)

@Petəíŕd The Spring Wizard where?
@M.A.R. one cheer for every year, so 46
@M.A.R. pic or it never happened!

@ShadowWizardLoveZelda in my Den.

@Petəíŕd The Spring Wizard ah, pity.
Just kick everyone out. :D

I've manually removed it though, scared of summoning moderators because bans. :P
@ShadowWizardLoveZelda who starred it? ;)

@Petəíŕd The Spring Wizard troll!

@ShadowWizardLoveZelda The flag was marked helpful, however the answer was not deleted.

@cocomac heh. Weird.

Yeaaaaaaah I'm getting solar panels!
4
And thus, also airconditioning

@Tinkeringbell Wow, that's really cool! How was the board vote?

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog Easier than expected though the neighbor I mentioned did do difficult, but the other neighbors didn't go with that
She now started about electromagnetic waves and such, but luckily no one bought that kind of bogus.
So she was overruled and begrudgingly went along
As for insurance, I didn't know but one of the new neighbors that arrived last year is also in that business and he had some good counterarguments to her opinions on that.

@Tinkeringbell For all you know, she could be working for the fossil fuel industry :)
@Tinkeringbell If you do get one installed, I'd recommend one that can go in reverse when it's cold (act as a heat pump). Will save you a lot of energy

8:14 PM
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog i already have a heat pump for heating, which will be more efficient ;)
But the heat pump I have can't cool, so airconditioning it is

@Tinkeringbell Oh, I was picturing the old boilers I see on the tops of buildings in the northeastern U.S. and Europe
I'm trying to pressure my family to replace our current gas-fired water heater with a heat pump one. Last year, I had the perfect excuse, that California was essentially providing them for free - but they were lazy and didn't get around to it.
The federal government provides a 30% rebate (including on labor), and after the savings from gas bills it makes sense to get one.

Quick technical question: if I accept this answer -- stackoverflow.com/a/76521338/1874170 -- which is currently correct and helpful, but I pray will become incorrect at some future date, will I be later able to change my acceptance to another answer?

@JamesTheAwesomeDude yes, you can change it any time, no limits.
Accept isn't locked like ordinary votes.

@ShadowWizardLoveZelda ahh, I thought I remembered some weird locking logic to exist; thanks for the clarification there

jjnguy What does it mean to accept an answer? How do I accept an answer, and what are the rules? Can I accept my own self-answer? What are the reputation benefits? Which answer should I accept? Good old answer about the vote locking:

A: Why can't I change my vote if the post has been edited during the initial 5mn grace period?

randomWhen you vote the first time, up or down, the starter's gun pistolwhips the air. As the crack rounds the bend and smacks your left ear, that's about when the vote is locked in. If they happen to sneak in some more content within the 5-minute grace period, your first vote still sticks with all th...
