7:06 AM
er guys how come in my profile the tags section says my discussion tag has 19 posts
but the "next tag badge" section says 13 posts only?

7:19 AM
@DialFrost because only answers count for a tag badge. You have 19 posts, but only 13 of those are answers. The rest are questions.
Post means either a question or an answer.
You can view your answers for specific tag with such search.

Old, but I got to know it only recently.
How's your jelly today? @star
Maybe rename to starjelly?
:D

@ShadowTheKidWizard starjelly sounds better :3

@tripleee kaboom, but spammer still alive
@DialFrost better than what?
You can be FrostJelly

@ShadowTheKidWizard than starball
@ShadowTheKidWizard wut...

And I'll be Shadow The Jelly Wizard
If both of you change I'll change too, @star @Dial
Jelly Party!

8:49 AM
@ShadowTheKidWizard i'd prefer to keep my name thank you very much :3

:(
!!/rename Dial

@ShadowTheKidWizard No such command 'rename'.

lmao
@ShadowTheKidWizard dare u to get journey to do it

nah
He'll munch my toes

8:50 AM
@ShadowTheKidWizard hehe wut

It's tickling

@JourneymanGeek do you would you munch shadow's toes?

I didn't ask him to rename, so no

lol
changed it to "would"

8:54 AM
@ShadowTheKidWizard 🕷
@ShadowTheKidWizard I heard this a lot a while ago but never search for it myself. first time I've actually searched for it to listen to it today

> A spider, an eight-legged arachnid that spins a web. Depicted as a common black spider, as a house spider or funnel-web spider, often shown from above with its large abdomen oriented at the bottom.

@ShadowTheKidWizard ooh. but I can't change display name until dec 6th 'xD I just renamed recently

@starball why search if I posted a link? ;)
Well my case is odd, first time I heard it was in my kids game, so at some point I looked for it myself, and got hooked. :P

*correction. actively performed an action to listen to it.
@ShadowTheKidWizard ic. what game?

They have this game where they hear a song (usually old) and need to move character only on white stripes, or something like that.
@starball ^
@starball well not relevant since @Dial refuse to cooperate. ;-(

8:59 AM
*bobs head

So I'll have to think of a different name, didn't change for a while. :D
Must contain Shadow, and better also have Wizard, but less vital.

is "kid" a vital part?

@starball nope. That was the seasonal name.

ic

My mother sent me this picture, so that name popped into my head, to have along with the picture as avatar. ;)

9:02 AM
Here's a song I've been listening to recently: "1" (opening theme for mob psycho 100 (an anime)) youtu.be/PB4VaN_qV3Q

@starball that's very original name
How's their "2"? ;)

*xbox would like to know your location
yeesh names these days are all one word
why can't we have super long names

@starball like my name? ;)

like "shadow the kid wizard"
@ShadowTheKidWizard my punchline >:(

:D
punching @star's line

9:06 AM
@JourneymanGeek does punching my line qualify as animal abuse? Does shadow need to fill out forms now?
I'm excited for winter bash

@starball you're a ball travelling between stars, that's not recognized as animal by the animal organizations. :D

this will be my first one

@starball what now?

@starball make sure to bring a towel

status-old

@ShadowTheKidWizard :O what for?
@ShadowTheKidWizard darnit

hmm that's odd now I realize @SPArcheon still didn't start nagging balpha or Yaakov about winter bash. ;)

what is there to nag about?
and why does SPArcheon usually do it?

9:10 AM
@starball suggest hats, ask why old domain and scripts still up, and when new domain and scripts will be active.

@ShadowTheKidWizard ah. I'd like a hat to incentivise close vote queue reviewers. but I don't know anything about what makes a good hat.

@starball nothing, that's the beauty of it. Hat hunter should not think of "good hats" or "bad hats", just hunt for any possible hat.
Some are easy to get, some are not.
!!/hats

@ShadowTheKidWizard No such command 'hats'.

hmm there used to be, years ago. :/

came across this post today: Winter Bash encourages bad behavior *adds to "non-existent considered-harmful writeup list"

9:16 AM
Dec 31, 2018 at 23:19, by SmokeDetector
@Rob Winter Bash won't end for 2 days, 0 hours, 40 minutes, and 20 seconds. GO EARN SOME HATS!
So they killed the command four years ago.
Since then it's just "command not found".

what did it do?

@starball just told when the event starts or ends.
Probably keeping it up to date, i.e. writing the dates in some static string, was too much work for the developers, who prefer to work on bugs, so I can understand.
Quite the same as SE, who gives maybe 1% time for feature requests. lol

@ShadowTheKidWizard lmao
@ShadowTheKidWizard where does the other 99% go?

@ShadowTheKidWizard When clicking the button you get the following message: "We are not able to provide support for your Facebook account. Please visit the Facebook Help Center for assistance."
Enterprise in its best.

9:26 AM
If I was a client, such thing would annoy me a lot. If you can't help with something, don't suggest to help with it, really simple. lol
@tripleee k
@starball of the time spent by SE developers? Bugs.
I mean those rare cases when they work on MSE bugs and requests.
99.999% of the overall development time is spent on their internal projects.

@ShadowTheKidWizard wow-this-is-useless.png

I think it's over a month since they fixed a bug reported on MSE.

@ShadowTheKidWizard :O what are those?

@starball we can't know, it's internal. ;)
My guess is mostly Teams, being their main money maker these days.
Sometimes features they add to Teams leak to the public codebase, making weird bugs. :D

I've been curious about that recently (how they make money)
@ShadowTheKidWizard lol

9:32 AM
I'd love to think they also work on improving existing features like Saves, but I doubt it.
After fixing its critical bugs, it's done and sealed.

I've been trying to look at data on close reasons and post views to see if there's anything interesting that could be used to try to make in-money-terms convincing argument to try to address certain types of close-worthy questions.
@ShadowTheKidWizard sad

@starball yup

Here's the SEDE query I've been working on.
If you sort by average views, average daily views, and average score, of the closed questions with reasons that I understand (some are null and I don't know why), Unclear questions are consistently the worst.

@ShadowTheKidWizard To be fair, with the current world state, I'm kinda on the "skip" wagon this year.

I wish SEDE had info on views for deleted questions and on specific CloseAsOffTopicReasonTypes for closed questions. I upvoted the feature-requests asking for those.
@SPArcheon by world, do you mean "SE", or the actual world?

9:36 AM
@SPArcheon hmm, this reminds me that was the case last year as well, no?
@starball actual world, Russia war probably.

@ShadowTheKidWizard how does that influence your (non)desire for involvement in winter bash?

@ShadowTheKidWizard It is already quite an heartache to not know what to say to old pals in a chat room that live in that country, always worrying about being silly when they probably have bigger issues on their mind, no need to add hats to the mix.

@SPArcheon ah

@starball lines are not animals. Maybe crimes of geometry
@DialFrost no. I savage ankles and spammers

@starball it doesn't, but I do get why it can make people upset/depressed.
Seeing the lack of justice in the world and being unable to fight it.

9:41 AM
@ShadowTheKidWizard whoops. I meant that comment to be a reply to SPArcheon. my bad

@SPArcheon well, while I personally not sharing such view, I can understand that.

@ShadowTheKidWizard powerful people and their "games" :(
I'm going to get ready for bed now. nite everyone!

@starball I hope the bed will be ready for you. :D
incoming starball!!!

1 hour later…
10:57 AM
@ShadowTheKidWizard The command still exists, just commented out: github.com/Charcoal-SE/SmokeDetector/blob/master/… Someone would need to manually update the start and end dates.

@JNat and another cross site spammer for you. Thanks!
@Mithical commented out means doesn't exist.
and like I said... manually updating requires time that nobody has, and it's fine.
It's just a bonus command without any real use.

1 hour later…
12:44 PM
@ShadowTheKidWizard worth also noticing that it can go horribly wrong if they have the bad idea to recycle some very specific hats. Pretty sure someone would start a flame war about Matryoshka.
just a quick reminder, will ya?

Q: This star on the Warm Welcome hat looks like a communist symbol

emixI've just earned the "Warm Welcome hat" and the red star on it looks like a communist symbol. I associate this symbol on this particular hat closely with many atrocities against my country: Poland, as well as Czechia, Hungary, Slovakia, Ukraine and many others from inside the Iron Curtain. I h...

@SPArcheon yeah, they most likely will have at least one hat with something to do with some country, can't really avoid that when people looking beneath any possible stone to find such things and burn SE down for that. But hopefully like in the above case, they'll also fix it after it would be reported.

@ShadowTheKidWizard to be fair... it would be very easy to avoid?

@SPArcheon nope.

doesn't really seem that hard to choose hats that can't be related to recent politics/world events.
just go for silly ones.

Well the above hat might be obvious but I'm sure there are things that aren't common knowledge and related to specific countries.

12:57 PM
@ShadowTheKidWizard It would be appropriate to argue over an hat that is clearly associated to some military corp (see for example the Cobol one), a tad less to argue over a country well known craft (Matryoshka) and even less to go arguing that "the uncle of the son of the second grade sister of the cousin of [insert horrible figure here] once posed for an ads that loosely looks like this bread toaster hat, so this is clearly inappropriate".

@SPArcheon yeah, I talk mainly on the last one, it's impossible to know in advance what people might find.
Or what people will take offense from, it's not always just politics.

tbh
not having that hat is commonsensical this year.

@JourneymanGeek sure, we're talking about other hats that might trigger same problem.

@ShadowTheKidWizard yep, but apparently we don't even need to get THAT far into borderline trolling since we are perfectly able to stumble even on the first common sense scenario

Update Statistics already off the homepage so small chance of it to get naturally closed/deleted any time soon.

1:14 PM
@ShadowTheKidWizard taken care of

@ShadowTheKidWizard thank you

hm
I think I need to keep an eye on that question ._.
also, they keep trotting out the 1.8 billion dollar number
the company isn't sitting on a giant load of cash. Its what prosus felt was a fair price for the potential of the company

1:36 PM
And do they not understand that that money went to the shareholders of the company. It is not like the company is now sitting on $1.8B of cash...

yup
Heck, some probably went into the coffers of my government. (THEY MADE MONEY FOR ONCE YAY)

@JourneymanGeek Nope, it's the billionaire that bought things that is sitting on the pile. Everyone knows billionaires are billionaires because they have that much cash lying around in an old sock :P

@Tinkeringbell it must be a very big sock

@ShadowTheKidWizard ugh, I only now realized I had a red thingy on my topbar... o/

@Tinkeringbell wait
SE got bought by a dragon? :D
#YOUCANTHANDLETHETRUTH #IWELCOMEOURLIZARDMONSTERMASTERS

1:48 PM
@JourneymanGeek I mean, some companies/billionaires do hoard, but I think it's kinda unfair to compare those to the noble beasts that are dragons ;)

@JourneymanGeek thanks!
@YaakovEllis hi! Well, just saying what's on my mind, as usual. :)
@YaakovEllis sadly that's what people think, but even so, it doesn't justify that "big eyes" attitude.
@g3rv4 uh oh. Don't tell me you pressed the red button?!

@ShadowTheKidWizard A different perspective might be: in the current economy, when every other tech company is having layoffs and cuts, it's really cool that you could do this, for any amount

running away in terror before everything explodes

@ShadowTheKidWizard and frankly if SE had actually that kinda money lying around, I'd be a lot grumpier at them :D

@ShadowTheKidWizard if I see a red button, I can't help it (I would be a great president)

1:53 PM
@JourneymanGeek lol but you wouldn't know it. ;)

rather than trying to pick away at small wins (and tbh, them donating again isn't a 'small' win, its a pretty big one)

@g3rv4 haha, I know a place where you can actually get elected! :P

@ShadowTheKidWizard maybe!

@ShadowTheKidWizard lol I'm more of a mastodon unelected ruler :P

@YaakovEllis yes, that's interesting point of view I didn't think about. Maybe worth adding answer and include such things, so some people might change their mind.

1:55 PM
@YaakovEllis tbh, I think most of them as companies have far less sympathy than I have for the folks here :D . People naturally... losing your job is a terrible thing ._.
facebook invested poorly, twitter is run by a ... twitterer....

@g3rv4 so, how are you? I saw a bug related to missing translations, in pt.stackoverflow, anything you can do to help fix?

actually I'd almost say some of the same mistakes SE made in the past, and hopefully leanrnt from

@ShadowTheKidWizard I have decided to just not answer any of the folks there. Not worth it, and I'll just end up being regretful about putting time into this initiative

@ShadowTheKidWizard I didn't see that! can you point me there? I may be able to help

@YaakovEllis oh, I mean post actual answer, not reply to specific comments.

1:56 PM
@YaakovEllis tbh - the healthiest thing is let the angry ones get angrier, and watch the fireworks

Q: The Portuguese Stack Overflow settings page has some untranslated text

starballSome of the content in the user page on pt.stackoverflow.com is not localized. Here's the text I noticed: In the Profile Pane You don’t have a gold badge yet. Y'all did a right thing, and cough <expletives> them if its never good enough.

@JourneymanGeek do you need water? You doesn't sound very well. :P
Which reminds me, @Mith are you out of quarantine by now? Feeling well again?

@ShadowTheKidWizard well, if it was cough explosions... I clearly overdid the chilli

@JourneymanGeek lol

2:00 PM
@ShadowTheKidWizard that's not really a bug... it's just that no one translated those strings (that's something the communities can do using traducir.win). You can see the first untranslated string here

@g3rv4 but who usually translate? The site users?

@ShadowTheKidWizard yup! people in the community are the ones that translate them :) that's why traducir.win was a community-led project
out of the community frustration with transifex

Anyway since nobody took part in the daily riddle earlier, here is a new daily riddle! How old is the following cat?

@g3rv4 who runs/owns/funds it?

@g3rv4 nice. Hope they'll fill the gaps soon. :)

2:06 PM
@JourneymanGeek it lives under my github username, it runs on my server (although it doesn't have any confidential info... so much so that the database backups are available to download publicly). I want to hand it over to Stack Overflow before leaving

@g3rv4 wait, who ran it when you were not at SO

@JourneymanGeek he did, of course.

@JourneymanGeek I did
at least I transferred the name to the company... so if I were to do something shady, they'd be able to break the DNS

I remember that's what you mainly talked about here in the past. :D

heh, if you let me I'll talk mainly about mastodon here

2:08 PM
@g3rv4 Well I doubt you would, but it seems like the sort of thing that would deserve a little more responsibility on the side of the company ._.

@JourneymanGeek :sigh:

@g3rv4 I've got account off my browser vendor oddly enough. Still debating running my own

@g3rv4 you have my permission. :D

@g3rv4 I'll add it to my nag list :D

Also, I understand this old comment is out of date then? @g3r
@ShadowWizard Translation is done by humans. We contract a company for it. We send them text in English, they send us back Portuguese. — Adam Lear ♦ Jul 22, 2014 at 15:05

2:09 PM
Which might have caused a few people extra grey hairs.

@ShadowTheKidWizard it's out of date... that's something we did when we first launched the sites AFAIK (but I'm not 100% sure about that as I wasn't here when that happened)

@g3rv4 huh. Is there any official documentation for your project at all?

@JourneymanGeek running a small one is def not a big hurdle
@ShadowTheKidWizard what kind of documentation are you after?

@g3rv4 yeah, I've just been a lot more behind on personal projects than expected

@g3rv4 two layers, one that would explain that's what being officially used, and one technical that explains how to use it.

2:11 PM
@JourneymanGeek the nice thing is that you can join one (highly recommend hachyderm.io) and move later, keeping your followers

@g3rv4 oh, I already have one
on vivaldi's server
but its not something I am running myself

what's your handle?

@JourneymanGeek hosted by this nice person?

@g3rv4 @journeymangeek@vivaldi.net
@ShadowTheKidWizard Oh, basically the folks who used to run opera made a new browser

:)
Did he even compose opera?

2:13 PM
@ShadowTheKidWizard not really... I'm not super interested in writing documentation (and this was something I built on my personal time). here's the post I wrote on launch date (in Spanish) and here is the code. We also wrote things on the different international sites as we launched there

dammnit Jim, I'm the journeyman geek, not a historian :D

oh he did.
> Vivaldi also had some success with expensive stagings of his operas in Venice, Mantua and Vienna.
@g3rv4 hmm, I'll think of something then, perhaps. Is this used for all international sites?

@ShadowTheKidWizard it is

@ShadowTheKidWizard traducir.win links to the different variations

2:16 PM
If it falls, what's the impact on SE? Just no new translations? @g3r

@ShadowTheKidWizard that's right
traducir.win pulls data from transifex and pushes data to transifex
Stack Overflow's build process pulls data from transifex and stores the translations on a database

@g3rv4 I see. And the security stuff e.g. filtering out bad content, is done server side?
i.e. you can't know what people would put there, they might try XSRF and other nasty stuff.

@ShadowTheKidWizard no, users propose translations and mods are the ones that review it and approve it. Once it's approved, it makes it into Transifex

@g3rv4 oh, didn't know about mods approval.

and translations aren't deemed secure, so they're escaped before being outputed
mods can just enter translations without anyone else approving them

2:21 PM
Sounds fair.

<3

Small token cup of coffee for gratitude. ;)
hmm think Kenny has command to actually thank people, let me see if it still works...
buh it's just generic :/
in Shadow's Den, 22 secs ago, by KennyBOT
@ShadowTheKidWizard thanks for for the help.
And having typo. :D
@rene ^^

@ShadowTheKidWizard use the alternate version.

@SPArcheon unicorn?

If my memory serves the syntax should be....
> @[user name here] thanks!
^ try this one, it should still work @ShadowTheKidWizard

2:27 PM
SU one gone

@SPArcheon nah, that's not a Kenny command.
Just looked in the code, turns out I can thank only someone who has been in the Den.

sometime I really wonder if you don't get irony or if you are trying to prank me back.

look at what I wrote and think how that would look..... I was just implying that it would be faster to thank them directly.

yay! It works, but doesn't ping.
in Shadow's Den, 20 secs ago, by KennyBOT
@ShadowTheKidWizard thanks Mithical, starball for the help.
And can't find the reason why it put extra "for" when the array is empty.
if (userlist.length > 0) {
    bot.send(
    ':' +
    ce.message_id +
    ' thanks ' +
    userlist.join(', ') +
    ' for the help.');
    nextTime = new Date();
    nextTime.setMinutes(nextTime.getMinutes() + 6);
    ttw = nextTime;
    setTimeout(function () { silent = false; ttw = undefined }, util.minutes(8));
    silent = true;
}
That's the code ^
@SPArcheon thank... someone... directly... that's not elegant! :D

2:36 PM
huh... only if userlist is just ['for']

So here I'm using coffee for that.
@g3rv4 yeah, but it can't be, it's populated with the names in the command line, if they match someone who ever visited Den.
So when I originally tried with Yaakov, just as example, it didn't recognize him.
Well most likely the code was updated at later point and not copied back to glitch.com where I see it. :(

@ShadowTheKidWizard yeah, out of quarantine

@Mithical awesome! :)

@ShadowTheKidWizard Shard Wizdow

Did there used to be a line between the text of a question and the tags or am I hallucinating?
@starball better

7:09 PM
@Mithical Looking at some old screenshots (just search for 'screenshot' in any room where those might be regularly shared)... You're hallucinating.
It seems to have been gone for a while at least. I saw a screenshot from last year without it.
