12:02 AM
@JourneymanGeek are your greetings always like this? Or is it just the recent ones?

@starball they're always like that unfortunately

12:37 AM
Depends on your definition of unfortunate

1 hour later…
1:40 AM
@JourneymanGeek lmao

Eternal life can be a curse

@JourneymanGeek it is a curse

How would you know?
hm?
ARE YOU GUILTY OF IMMORTAL BEHAVIOUR?

@JourneymanGeek um
@JourneymanGeek er
@JourneymanGeek maybe

hm. I find your lack of commitment non commital.

1:45 AM
??? your logic is confusing

It makes perfect sense. Do keep up

:(

1 hour later…
3:09 AM
@DialFrost Journey is a failed comedian, not a failed logician!

@M.A.R. ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?

If I were cruel like Tink I would have said no but I'm not cruel so I'm inconclusively ending this message

Wheel warring with a staff member isn't exactly entertaining.

@JourneymanGeek wha . . . What IS that?!
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog shh, we were gonna keep my staff status a secret
Also wha?

@M.A.R. apparently a 20something year old meme

3:13 AM
@JourneymanGeek It's like . . . It's like a painting . . . But it moves

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog Wheel warring?
@M.A.R. Its a GIF. Religious wars have been fought over how it should be pronounced. Galileo was pronounced a heretic for these words... "And yet it moves"

Gee Eye Eff? What secret meaning lies hidden beneath these words of power?

@M.A.R. good point

@JourneymanGeek Warring in administrative actions

I disagreed, and explained why

3:20 AM
Well, it hasn't developed into a war yet, since that requires for them to re-close.

and I feel that if a duplicate does not link to a useful answer, maybe its worth giving the question a chance

@JourneymanGeek no need to be angry!
Here, take this glass of water, then drink to ten, then count the glass of water. Something like that.

I also posted a rebuttal to the disagreement, which is that two feature requests asking for the same thing and having much of the same arguments aren't worth keeping around. There is also policy, precedent, and system ability to close bugs and FRs as duplicates much like it's done on issue trackers for software.
If you disagree with this practice, it's best to post a separate discussion arguing why you disagree with such closures if the target has an answer with a workaround that no longer works, or that duplicate closures should be reserved for use the same way as they are on main sites and the issue tracker-style closures are a bad idea on meta sites.

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog Uh, I'm gonna butt in . . . You're the stats guy and all, but hasn't that been how dupe closure has alw . . . Often worked?
If you can't close a bug as a dupe of the same bug that's supposedly status-completed, why should workarounds be different?

@M.A.R. Actual regressions are a different case since they're system bugs on their own (the design is such that this feature should be implemented, but it's not). A community workaround no longer working is not a system bug in and of itself.

3:30 AM
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog I think I have one already from the early days I've been a mod

But why doesn't it make sense for the same logic to apply to workarounds (as I'm sure it has before)? The difference seems mostly semantics to me.

I'd rather people optimise for helpfulness over neatness

@JourneymanGeek agreed, but neatness is still kinda importnat

OMG with the campaign mottos again

as is spelling :D

3:31 AM
grabs Journey's boy scout badge and swallows it

There's also the issue that it wasn't the community or another mod, but a staff member who did the initial closure. I'd consider the action very much official on behalf on SE and reversing it without discussion or approval isn't wise.
@JourneymanGeek If SE prefers that questions reporting the same bug be consolidated, I wouldn't go against that without a clear approval to change it.

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog not particularly as a matter of policy though
and staff are not infallible

@JourneymanGeek Not saying such. Clear accidents or emergencies are possible, but in the case of ideological difference, much better to talk it out with them than to unilaterally reverse it.

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog which is to an extent what comments are for

@M.A.R. A regression is a new instance of buggy behavior appearing in the system. On the other hand, a workaround ceasing to work isn't creating a new instance of it (it still never worked for people who didn't perform the workaround). A valid bug report would be to the workaround creator, or to SE for another bug that caused the workaround to stop.
@JourneymanGeek So just post the comment without reversing their decision. If they respond and agree with your reasoning, then revert it. In this case they disagreed with your opinion, so if it were me I'd have left it from there or raised the issue on .

3:38 AM
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog If it wasn't staff, and was a simple gold badger I'd do the same tho

I'd do the same even so, since it's still the same admin tool regardless of whether you gain it by earning the tag badge, being elected/appointed as a mod, or getting hired as a staff member.

I'd note if the answer did work - I'd have been meeeeeh whatevs

To be clear, I'm not prioritizing neatness in all cases. Especially after the responses I got to this past discussion of mine, I don't immediately vote to close if the other request is for the same thing but has additional arguments or makes a completely different case.

Hey @tripleee, isn't changin criteria to criterion a difference between american and British english (or vice versa)?

I can only find dictionaries which define it as the plural of "criterion"; do you have a reference?

No just out the top of my head criteria wouldn't be wrong

merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/… has more nuance but nothing about American vs British

@tripleee they're even renamed to spammer now

that already happened a while back, but their recent activity seems to have all been plagiarized content
I went over their earlier posts yesterday and all of them turned out to be plagiarized

7:15 AM
@tripleee well just turns out people just ise criteria more often, even though it being gramatically incorrect

yeah, best probably to try to avoid the singular but that would have been invasive

@Luuklag Just like "die" and "dice"

True @SonictheAnonymousHedgehog

@JNat stackexchange.com/users/24372489/spammer?tab=accounts another one for the backlog. Keeps coming back like a bad penny it seems

7:35 AM
Top answer 100 votes, 2nd answer 69 votes, perfect :3
shoot nvm someone just upvoted

@DialFrost I just bumped you to 70. are you happy or sad
hehe

@starball both
happy for the vote, sad you broke the number
This is my first post that is past 30 votes in all my sites :3

noice
someone downvoted
(just to bring it back to 69?)
perfectly balanced?
as all things should be?

Perhaps.

I saw the magic number

7:40 AM
BUT ENTROPY AND CHAOS CONSUMES ALL EVENTUALLY

@JourneymanGeek back? It's a result of mods merging spammers together, no?

@starball yes
@JourneymanGeek i think not

@ShadowTheKidWizard mods can't merge users

@JourneymanGeek oh. So just rename to "spammer" network wide.

7:41 AM
@ShadowTheKidWizard some mods do that

Personally think it's pointless but meh.

Shouldn't the wording "your own" be changed?

instructions unclear. renaming to "'spammer' network wide"

basically our way of dealing with multi-site spammers is annoyingly manual

@JitendraSingh of what and where?

7:42 AM
@JitendraSingh umm, no. Why?

at least the default nuclear suspension's a year

@starball it's Area51

oh nvm just saw the screenshot

Single user can propose a new site.
So "your own" makes perfect sense.

@ShadowTheKidWizard Your own SE site technically means you are the owner of that site if it succeeds in Area 51

7:43 AM
@JitendraSingh not really

@DialFrost Which means according to decartes, you are not.
@JitendraSingh for certain values of own

Anyway what you suggest instead? @Jit

@JourneymanGeek wu...wut

Sites are still mostly community run

@DialFrost welcome to my world :D

7:45 AM
@ShadowTheKidWizard Are you the confused or the confuser? :D

Trying to understand people here is excellent mind practice, keeping me sharp. :D

@ShadowTheKidWizard Maybe like "Find something missing? Want to propose a new site? Check out Area 51"
Finding*

@JitendraSingh that's a radical change, but feel free to start a feature request.

@ShadowTheKidWizard too much sharpening can turn a broadsword into a needle

@JourneymanGeek funny, Needle is a very sharp and very good sword. ;)
@JourneymanGeek indeed
@DialFrost Henry the 2nd? Sounds like a king.

7:49 AM
@ShadowTheKidWizard yup lmao

haha! And it is.
Henry II (5 March 1133 – 6 July 1189), also known as Henry Curtmantle (French: Court-manteau), Henry FitzEmpress, or Henry Plantagenet, was King of England from 1154 until his death in 1189. He was the first king of the House of Plantagenet. King Louis VII of France made him Duke of Normandy in 1150. Henry became Count of Anjou and Maine upon the death of his father, Count Geoffrey V, in 1151. His marriage in 1152 to Eleanor of Aquitaine, whose marriage to Louis VII had recently been annulled, made him Duke of Aquitaine. He became Count of Nantes by treaty in 1158. Before he was 40 he controlled...
Who is 1st? @Dial

@ShadowTheKidWizard 1st of what

@DialFrost of what Henry is 2nd in

@ShadowTheKidWizard er sideshowbarker the 1st :3

Henry I (c. 1068 – 1 December 1135), also known as Henry Beauclerc, was King of England from 1100 to his death in 1135. He was the fourth son of William the Conqueror and was educated in Latin and the liberal arts. On William's death in 1087, Henry's elder brothers Robert Curthose and William Rufus inherited Normandy and England, respectively, but Henry was left landless. He purchased the County of Cotentin in western Normandy from Robert, but his brothers deposed him in 1091. He gradually rebuilt his power base in the Cotentin and allied himself with William Rufus against Robert. Present at the...

7:53 AM
What about @cig? What position?
@JourneymanGeek can't double vote

@ShadowTheKidWizard 2nd last
i think

@ShadowTheKidWizard Of course not! Kingship is determined by the distribution of cutlery by acquatic women!

really surprised cig didnt do well

@JourneymanGeek why won't a woman be a king?

@ShadowTheKidWizard Well - Its happened before
Well technically Pharoah

8:02 AM
@JourneymanGeek no. Women can only be queens in our world.
@DialFrost lol thought it's some joke but yeah, the one with most cryptic name and most unfamiliar won. lol
Guess many voters just dragged randomly.

@ShadowTheKidWizard lmao

@ShadowTheKidWizard Down with the Man!

@ShadowTheKidWizard ye

@ShadowTheKidWizard Well I posted it here but I am feeling like there can be a much better wording possible too but I can't seem to think of any right now

@JitendraSingh no worry, it's not like SE is going to actually change anything in Area51.

8:09 AM
> Can't find a Stack Exchange Q&A site for any topic?

In 6-8 years it will be shut down, and all bug reports and feature requests can be marked completed.

Well then you're just bad at searching, not needed to make a new one.

@Tinkeringbell hmm?
If you accuse someone of something please add something, e.g. link.

If you can't find a SE Q&A for any topic, that's bad searching... there's plenty of sites on plenty of topics out there already

@Tinkeringbell oh thought you mean someone already asked that.

8:11 AM
@ShadowTheKidWizard If you could just shut up for more than 10 seconds, my two messages would be back-to-back and make sense :P

> Can't find a Stack Exchange Q&A site for any topic?
2 mins ago, by Tinkeringbell
Well then you're just bad at searching, not needed to make a new one.
From the question you two were just discussing.

But anyway not really, even with 500 sites, there would still be topics without dedicated site.

Sure but the phrasing there makes as little sense as the 'your own' wording.

@Tinkeringbell Well if correctly searching gives you an SE site for each topic then why do we even have Area51 right now?

@DialFrost yeah it became an unexpected rep fest

@JitendraSingh That is not what I said. What I said was:
12 mins ago, by Tinkeringbell
If you can't find a SE Q&A for any topic, that's bad searching... there's plenty of sites on plenty of topics out there already
And with regards to this, if anyone has better wording they are not expected to fix your post for you, they can just propose it in another answer.

8:26 AM
@Tinkeringbell not really, I agree with @Jit. If it's bad searching it means that with good searching one can find a site for anything that exists.
But that's not true, there are still things not covered in any Stack Exchange site.
It's not bad searching to not find a site, because it actually does not exist.

I'm talking only about "bad searching" part.

Some topics do have SE sites already. So any topic can have a SE site already, and if you can't find it, that's bad searching.

@Tinkeringbell Well seeing that way then the previous line used to say "Want to start your own Stack Exchange Q&A sites?"- Here there is no mention that you can't start a Stack Exchange site of a topic that has already been used.

@Tinkeringbell Well, guess we just disagree on that, and it's fine.
Not all topics have SE site already, and there never will, unless there will be infinite number of sites.

8:30 AM
17 mins ago, by Tinkeringbell
Sure but the phrasing there makes as little sense as the 'your own' wording.
Also, just adding 'if you can't find it, make one' isn't any better. Considering the amount of questions I see on MSE about things that are in plain sight but users somehow can't 'find'.

Okay maybe we can keep just a normal line
> Want to propose a new site? Check out Area 51. Our friendly robots are waiting.

You would then have to go on an explanation of how to search etc.

@Tinkeringbell I guess this would be fine right?

For some reason Jason's old post became spam/crap magnet, protected it to stop the wave.

8:48 AM
@ShadowTheKidWizard For the comment in my post, in my news section the first news was related to cryptocurrency so I had a quick go through of all SE exisiting sites. I didn't know it was a recent proposal lol :D

@JitendraSingh lol, well, but chances for proposal to become SE site are very low these days, so doesn't really matter.

9:12 AM
yay 3k rep

@JitendraSingh It's better than before.

9:30 AM
@DialFrost WWW (Who? Where? Why?)
:D
@tripleee k

10:12 AM
@DialFrost I'm so jelly
@DialFrost congrats though!

@ShadowTheKidWizard I noticed
and am confused

10:47 AM
@starball what flavor?
@JourneymanGeek yeah, the mind of spammers/trolls is a real oddity.

11:20 AM
sites which misspell "design" have a special place in my heart

I am tempted to reply ..... "Who are you?"

11:36 AM
Well, that's clearly English of the 'their our know rules in English language' kind.
It's also gone :)

@tripleee poof

Anyone familiar with Jira here?

erf
I've been lucky enough to avoid touching it for the past year or two

A little, depends on what the further question is :)

I have a board with a gazillion issues, yay for (ab)using a program for something it wasn't designed for.
But to make things a bit easier to understand I want to split my board by the different Epics
So each Epic on its own board

Ah. Can't help with that, sorry :(

@Tinkeringbell huh? Didn't @Luuk said Jira?

1:00 PM
Heh. I did google for jira, then picked a link without looking XD
'move boards jira' was my search XD
This one looked promising based on the title XD

I need more sleep....

!!/sleep Tink

@ShadowTheKidWizard No such command 'sleep'.

1:09 PM
I wish that worked. Though I must admit that last night, I had a pretty much undisturbed sleep. Especially this morning was nicely quiet.
Wasn't enough to catch up on about a week and a half of not sleeping well/enough though.

I woke up an hour late this morning, but still feel exhausted

@Luuklag sleep overflow.

@ShadowTheKidWizard Yeah exactly

1:54 PM
hehe Kenny being sarcastic?
in Shadow's Den, 3 mins ago, by KennyBOT
~ Who needs sleep here?

2:07 PM
Or honest interest :P
We only complain about needing sleep in here, where Kenny can't read it.
He may want to know as well, but he has no way to except for asking ;)

@Tinkeringbell Kenny has eyes everywhere! :D

Weird.

@ShadowTheKidWizard that lost soul has 13.x rep on SO... I'm confused so I figured I'd give him a chance to figure it out

@JourneymanGeek lol, not relevant at all.
Lost soul is, well, lost.
Rep isn't relevant.
People think MSE is "catch it all" for anything, that's just one of those.
And, it's a classic "shoot and run", asking and never bothering to check or reply to comments.

Reflexively chucked a delete vote at it without looking at their rep.

2:19 PM
meta.stackexchange.com/questions/383552/… < @Sha because this has been going on for longer and if OP can behave themselves, they should be able to do so without a lock.
If they can't after my last comment, I will probably end up perpetually locking the post and issuing a suspension for vandalism.
But a lock of e.g. a week will just mean postponing the problem for a week.

@Spevacus tbh
So did I

@Tinkeringbell fair
@Tinkeringbell not sure, IMO lock sends a strong message.

@ShadowTheKidWizard Well - I'd hope people get the message first, even if it feels a little optimistic.

We'll see. ;)

@ShadowTheKidWizard Just because something is in a language which isn't appropriate for the site (e.g. non-English on most sites) doesn't make the post TP for feedback to SmokeDetector. Feedback for posts in the wrong language should be based on what the content means. A substantial number of people rely on machine translation (e.g. Google Translate) to see what the content is, at least generally. In this case, the text appears to be a potentially reasonable question for the site, if it was in English. So, NAA feedback would be appropriate. It actually looks like the user posted at least part of their question as an answer. Please see: Feedback Guidance: Foreign-language posts on English sites (or vice versa) for a more detailed discussion of feedback on posts in the wrong language for the site.
