@JourneymanGeek military isn't the scary part. Oppenheimer's deadly toy is.
Their nukes might also be non operational as their army, but we can't know for sure.
@ShadowWizardSaysNoMoreWar isn't a blank check to get away with literal murder
@ShadowWizardSaysNoMoreWar basically any country they try to invade will fight to the last man.
and uh
they don't seem to be doing too well
and even the US and france were running low on ordanance during the second gulf war
he can't keep up a conventional war
@JourneymanGeek not sure about last man, Ukraine already showing signs of surrender, saying they don't plan to join NATO anymore.
@ShadowWizardSaysNoMoreWar the russians just hit a hospital
with kids
16:17
Well they'll keep doing it, sadly. That's how they think they'll make Ukraine surrender faster, but it's only the opposite. :/
Think the biggest downfall of Russia is their total and utter lack of understanding how the modern world operates.
so... what guarentees they won't do it again?
They're stuck in the previous century.
they apparently pulled an armoured train into Mariapol
16:18
So they just send tanks and expect the enemy to fall on their knees pleading.
@ShadowWizardSaysNoMoreWar Don't forget a total lack of knowledge of logistics
@JourneymanGeek you mean after Ukraine surrender?
@ShadowWizardSaysNoMoreWar if
heck, even if they win
"All that is needed for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing:
Right now its "not their fight"
until it is
Putin will never retreat, he'll prefer to nuke the world before doing such action.
@ShadowWizardSaysNoMoreWar at some point, its going to be that or have your own troops turn on you
16:22
@JourneymanGeek who knows.... but I just can't see this happening. More likely all his key officers are as cruel as him, or more.
And know he'll just butcher their families if they turn against him.
@ShadowWizardSaysNoMoreWar I'm thinking the romans
eh, i can see a future where he loses politically. Maybe the person that follows will also be problematic, but it'd be a de-escalation and a restart all the same
Well the future is going to be interesting, that's for sure.
The Ten Thousand (Ancient Greek: οἱ Μύριοι, oi Myrioi) were a force of mercenary units, mainly Greeks, employed by Cyrus the Younger to attempt to wrest the throne of the Persian Empire from his brother, Artaxerxes II. Their march to the Battle of Cunaxa and back to Greece (401–399 BC) was recorded by Xenophon, one of their leaders, in his work Anabasis. == Campaign == Between 401 and 399 BC, the Ten Thousand marched across Anatolia, fought the Battle of Cunaxa, and then marched back to Greece. Xenophon stated in Anabasis that the Greek heavy troops routed their opposition twice at Cunaxa at the...
so I see a few things ideally
the russian army in Ukraine basically realises its untenable
they do a fighting retreat back to belarus and russia.
16:24
A lot of the people around him just want power, money, etc.. As long as sanctions hold, they will continue to lose all of that and their ability to have a place in the world outside russia.
I suspect the scale of losses will be bad
sanctions may not affect putin directly, but it'll certainly affect those that enabled him.
and units not even supposed to be there
Well on second thought.... Putin does have billions of dollars. He stashed all of this for a reason, as last resort when everything falls down around him. So we can hope things will reach such point.
So he might fake his own death, and live in secret somewhere. :D
or just die
I don't think there's anywhere but russia safe for him
and his behavior is wierd
16:36
@JourneymanGeek he can do face implant, change identiy
Or I just watched too many movies. ;)
@ShadowWizardSaysNoMoreWar he's a dog person tho, else white cat...
@JourneymanGeek huh? Missed this one lol.
@ShadowWizardSaysNoMoreWar I think he owns a lab
and insulted Bush II 's old scottie
Anyway before going, wanted to share historical image, in other times it would be more interesting, but still...
who was a cranky little lady who bit a reported
@ShadowWizardSaysNoMoreWar .... yeah it would be
16:40
@JourneymanGeek who? Putin?
@ShadowWizardSaysNoMoreWar yup
And did you mean lamb?
checking what "lab" is
Vladimir Putin, current president of Russia, has owned seven dogs; since 2014, he has owned four dogs. == Dogs == When Putin took office, the Putin family had two poodles, Tosya and Rodeo. They reportedly stayed with his ex-wife Lyudmila after their divorce. === Konni (1999–2014) === Konni (1999–2014) was a female black Labrador Retriever. Konni was born in 1999 and presented to Putin in December 2000. Konni was often seen at Putin's side, and was sometimes allowed to attend meetings when he greeted world leaders during visits to Russia. Putin was being updated on the progress of the R...
oh.. Labrador, should know you use shortcuts. lol
Have no way to know "lab" is Labrador.
Its common usage
16:42
Not here... never saw this used.
Lab is laboratory.
like a newfie is a newfoundland dog, or a westie is a west highland white terrier
@JourneymanGeek in dog lovers forums, I'm sure. :)
Anyway, I'm off for a while. Cya!

1 hour later…
17:48
Maybe it's an American thing but... almost no one calls them "Labradors" in the US... it's almost universal that you call them "[color] lab" - so black lab, yellow lab etc.
So ... what is a labrador then in the US? Y'all made up a different meaning for a word again ....
@rene they call it a lab :D
With one less U than it is in english
yeah, but I mean the word "Labrador" what is that used for if is not for the dog ....
@Catija They're just called labradors here
Also heyo catija
the canadian provice?
17:57
long time no read
Also labradors are from newfoundland :D
you see how this gets confusing :D
hey @Magisch o/
hey rene
how's the garden
@Magisch Hi! :D
@Catija How are you and the kids
17:58
@Magisch dry ;)
@rene I think it's more that we're lazy and "Labrador retriever" is really long while "lab" is short.
lol
I think calling a lab a Labrador Retriever is excessively formal
@Magisch Mostly fine. :D Their school closed and we had to scramble to get something else but they seem mostly settled again.
good to hear :)
You doing OK?
18:01
ish, bit on edge and moody because of the war, some friends are unwittingly involved
otherwise yeah
@Magisch tbh, its a pretty natural response
I have a window open with news reports, and its... depressing
Agreed. It is easy to have it feel distant from here in the US but it sure sounds like it's something all of Europe is really concerned with.
(I feel ike we've had 2 decades of drama squished into 4 too)
@Catija its also a normal sense of being a non sociopathic human, and really wishing someone would step up and put a bully in their place.
18:19
@Catija Not all. I promise.
There's a lot over here that aren't concerned, just pissed they have to pay more for gas
I saw a news report on russia bombing and completely destroying a children's hospital and maternity ward
it's unknown how many people died but it's apparently quite a few, as the hospital was still functional and in use when it was hit by multiple bombs
what kind of sadistic shit bombs a childrens hospital
there was no shot this wasn't intentional, they bombed that building directly, multiple direct hits from a low altitude bomber, in a city where they have maps and those maps show where the hospital is
@Magisch well, he basically went from the "Hitler Invading the czechs" playbook to the Chechnya playbook
While I'd rather a no fly zone and happy hunting on those doing it, the Ukranians do seem to be giving them a solid fight
I wonder if this generation will ever forgive them
I certainly wont
but for the grace of god this could have been my friend's pregnant wife in there
18:23
@Magisch folks here still having forgotten the Japs for WW2
most people who directly experienced that didnt
I don't think there can be forgiveness until they realise/accept their actions were wrong
and most people now weren't around for that
Short of the russian army turning back on their own and taking out putin in a coup, its very hard to get forgiveness for what they're doing
even then
there's a lot of generals and higher level army staff that really need to hang at the hague
18:25
@JourneymanGeek My great-grandfather would be rolling in his grave if he knew I was talking to someone from Germany
they mined an escape route with butterfly mines
@JourneymanGeek If you meet a German, the proper reply here is "Nice meeting you, now I want my bike back"
@Tinkeringbell 0_0
@Magisch It can all go in that database of war crimes... And that'll probably be it for consequences
@Magisch ....
they also fired arty on one
18:28
They also targeted an artillery strike at aid workers giving out food, killing 6 aid workers and 47 civillians, multiple children, in a town square
was that the one that kiled the mayor? :/
shot guided missiles into an apartment complex
bombed a dorm room with cluster bombs
used thermobaric explosives in a town center
ugh
basically war crimes on warcimes
and no one willing to stop em
shot artillery at a nuclear power plant
only missing the reactor block by a few meters
then basically have had the workers there working with no rest
at gunpoint
18:30
that as well
they destroyed the power supplying the waste depot as well too
so once the backup generators fail those same workers are gonna die of near area radiation leakage
took over 400 people in a town as POWs because they got booed when they occupied it
Pretty sure Booing isn't an act of war
blew up a dam to contaminate the water supply
keep blowing up power lines to make people freeze to death in their homes so they'll surrender faster
attempted to asassinate the president like 12 times, including once by using a neo nazi militia group
Multiple presidents
they did poison one
@Magisch I didn't realize the war crimes database was you ;)
it is depressing as fuck
18:33
It really is.
I've read about all of those, though I wouldn't be able to list them like you just did. It's more the feeling of resentment that lingers here than the actual reason for it.
I have very good mid term memory
to my peril
I also very vividly remember that kid crying when the rocket hits the apartment block with his best friend's family in it and he sees the thing crumble in real time
I have been basically been alternating between doomscrolling and avoiding the news all week
BTW The 400 people who were arrested for booing the occupiers in cherson will likely be tried under russian law which puts 15 years in jail on protesting against the war or calling it a war (max)
18:37
@JourneymanGeek carefully dosaged doom scrolling here. Catching up in the morning, then at lunch and dinner. :)
@Magisch only, that's not russia... so...
@JourneymanGeek ah but putin says the ukraine never really had statehood
so it's all russia
according to him :)
@JourneymanGeek It is for now under Russian control. It wouldn't surprise me if they pulled some "quick judging" and deportations
My response to that would be very rude, and very very COC non compliant
@Tinkeringbell more likely just stuffed them somewhere... the russians do seem to have trouble with their land vehicles
bold of you to assume they'll even get trials
we know the russian army has no qualms with killing civillians en masse for no reason
18:40
@Magisch naive not bold ;)
@JourneymanGeek That's true
@Tinkeringbell I have the tabs on the jumpbox, not the main system ._.
@JourneymanGeek Probably better that way
19:11
Hi @Catija! I'm looking for something I think you'd know of, which I think you might have even potentially written. Somewhere in the discussions around pronouns, it was clarified that no, avoiding everyone's pronoun altogether by defaulting to they/them is not OK. I just ... can't find a post where this is actually said. Do you know where I can find that?
Sorry, wrong one. Need to learn to read better.
re the deleted message: oh yeah, it might've been avoiding peoples' pronouns altogether via clever sentence structure
meta.stackexchange.com/a/336365/369802 probably point two there
Different answer, same post :)
So... Defaulting to they/them is fine until they ask you to address them otherwise, in which case you should defer to what they ask of you. Right?
19:26
@Spevacus Correct. Though I won't blame anyone that needs a few reminders over time, it's pretty obvious and wrong if you immediately continue to use they/them, like that answer points out ..
@Spevacus That's the policy as I remember it, yes.
Heck, I think defaulting to they/them if you don't know is the recommended option.
I know there was an answer that... Yvette wrote, I think... somewhere... where she championed the idea of just using they/them for everyone always... and people shot that down because it's ... uh... not cool to use they/them if someone's asking you to use something else.
@Tinkeringbell bites fingernails
. . .
AAAAAAAA
@M.A.R. Applies bite-x to your nails to help a bit :)
Y-y-y-y-y-you shshshshshure
19:34
Well at the very least it's supposed to taste gross now ;)
AAA THE PING SOUND
Okay no more caffeine for you today
slowly sits down, still shivering
Go get some ice cream with sprinkles to calm yourself down. Add whipped cream and strawberries for really severe cases
Turns monotone reeeedrum, reeeedrum!
19:36
@M.A.R. heyo
long time no read
Heeeeey @Mag, how're you doing!
Same
Long time no read indeed
How's life?
A moment, someone is trying to hack the door to pieces with an axe
They sound like a jovial fellow
20:00
Thank you very much @Catija @Tinkeringbell
I have a friend dealing with a situation in their workplace that's got parallels with what we went through here in the mod community and wanted to show what some of the output was on that as part of talking them through the issue.
@JourneymanGeek well what are you gonna do about it? Huh huh huh
@M.A.R. I don't know
All it takes for evil to prevail is for good men to know nothing.
@M.A.R. Hey, you treat him with the respect he deserves or I will do something about it!
That bothers me, but I think going to Ukraine and picking up arms is a little too far
20:05
Present company excluded of course. Any references to real life individuals is a total coincidence
Then try legs hur hur hur
TBH there's this online friend over at ELU chat that happens to be in the country that shall not be named and he wakes up at 5:30 to distribute anti-war leaflets and stuff
And I'm sitting here like a duck or other sort of bird and I literally can't do anything short of really going to Ukraine myself. Can't donate, no one cares enough about the war for me to meaningfully raise awareness, don't even get out much to at least argue with some people or something
I feel like such a Wh- Brown Savior
@doppelgreener Ah. Well, best of luck to your friend. :)
@M.A.R. pretty much
@JourneymanGeek um, thank you for the confirmation
20:25
@M.A.R. That's okay though. It's not like any of that would change anything ;)
@M.A.R. you could try to change your avatars colors, as a start ?
20:44
@Vickel I think I'd rather feel the burden than appease myself with such a shallow gesture. Of course, other people that do it might believe in it, but it only means something if you do, and for me it's empty.
And I'd thank you to do me the same courtesy and not pass judgement.
@M.A.R. well, personally I don't think it is shallow. and if a lot of people would follow, it would show some stance with Ukraine...
but it was just a suggestion, and shows my frustration of being completely overwhelmed by the whole situation
@Vickel but of course the Ukrainian family that is fearing for their lives takes much consolation in the fact that people change their Tom & Jerry avatars to blue and yellow.
I could have bought a coffee for their sleepless nights, and I'm even denied that.
So no, for me, it'd be worse to do that.
awareness
but as I said, I'm completely overwhelmed with the whole situation...
@Vickel I don't think much awareness needs to be raised XD the topic is pretty inevitable if you open up the internet these days :)
@Tinkeringbell unfortunately :(
21:05
Don't know about that. It kinda sucks, sure... But in a twisted sense it's almost good that it has the reach it has
and maybe awareness was not the right word to use it should have said solidarity
