@GWarner good, did you sleep well?
@Rob too long and "official" look, the one @Mith posted is ideal.
It's simple, short, and to the point.
@M.A.R. sounds like you liked @Ollie's hairy eyebrow then? ;)
@GWarner wow, you're strong. Polish your sword, brave warrior.
:D
Rob
Rob
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 It's neither simple nor short. You have to follow the link provided and search for the applicable page; which leads to a much lengthier article than the ones I suggested: webaim.org/techniques/alttext - You need to make sure that when someone searches (for example) Google Images using words that the search engines can identify the contents of the image without resorting to Artificial Intelligence.
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 It's intentionally short and to the point, because we built a "you have an image without alt text - are you sure you want to submit? Here's why it's important" warning that links to that page. (Unfortunately, I was told it's not very simple to see how effective it is, so I don't have the data on hand.)
(And there's no requirement to visit the linked page.)
Basically, we implemented this feature request from here :p

@Rob not sure what you mean, but I meant that the FAQ that Mithical linked to is simple and short, not the pages you linked to.
Editing alt text is nice; But I won't spend hours of my time to learn everything about alt text in order to do it.
@Mithical oh, nice. How come there's no such feature request for SE? ;)
oh, there is. lol
Rob
Rob
@Sha, best get in line for your 3rd shot instead: timesofisrael.com/…
@Rob yeah, it's being discussed for a while. And unless something will go really wrong, the line won't be long, Israel small population size and wide health infrastructure makes it very efficient. So I don't worry. :)
But zero victims make everyone slack.
Sadly, it's one of "until enough people die, nobody really cares" cases.
yeah, where we are debating what enough is.
Rob
Rob
Often that's the case, either something happens once and one particular person will never do it again (got lost in city X, never going there again) or the lesson needs to be repeated many times to sink in; seemingly no middle ground.
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 The whole point of the conversation was: don't go editing and bumping everything, lazily only removing the default text, so no one willing to do a proper job can find the posts that need updating - it's just a destructive edit that should be rolled back or done correctly.
12 hours ago, by G Warner
Only remove the moronic "insert desciption here" so it isnt read by screen reader software
06:39
@rene true, here it's low, but still... even one life lost because of this is real waste.
@Rob oh sorry, missed that. But still, only few will read walls of text just to edit alt text "properly". I admire those few, but I'm not one of them.
@Rob yeah, after some thought, it's better to request that the alt text will be blank by default.
Rob
Rob
Blank everything, paint it black.
@Ollie could this be pine'd?
07:25
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 Noo, that makes it more difficult to identify images that need alt text, and it alerts people who are using a screen reader that there is an image.

@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 Recap.
in Shadow's Den, Mar 5 '15 at 15:20, by SPArchaeologist
@ShadowWizard there is a strong implication that while the actual answer to the life, universe and everything was meant to be a joke it was also intended to relate to something that could have granted happiness to all people in the world.
> And then, one Thursday, nearly two thousand years after one man had been nailed to a tree for saying
how great it would be to be nice to people for a change, one girl sitting on her own in a small cafe in
Rickmansworth suddenly realized what it was that had been going wrong all this time, and she finally knew
how the world could be made a good and happy place. This time it was right, it would work, and no one
would have to get nailed to anything.
Sadly, however, before she could get to a phone to tell anyone about it, a terribly stupid catastrophe
@SPArcheon yeah the most sad paragraph, ever.
The intro to the first book of the Guide to the Galaxy series somehow implies that the "answer" (that was allegedly about to be found just about when the planet was destroyed) is somehow tied to "make the universe a good and happy place"
So much has been lost.
But the answer is also 42, so the two must be connected
@SPArcheon sure? It clearly said "and the idea was lost forever".
So maybe 42 was something else.
i.e. just the answer to everything, not something to make everyone happy.
And there's no time travel or different dimensions like in other books, so "forever" should stick.
08:10
42 is the answer, but they didn't know what the QUESTION was. So, the Earth project was made to find the question.
@SPArcheon correct.
So the woman found the question?
Since it is said that knowing both the question AND the answer at the same time has the effect to instantly turn the universe in something else even more weird where the question and answers are different, the idea was to destroy the Earth before the calculation could be completed
since that passage stands out, it probably means that whatever the woman was going to say before the planet went kabom, it was related to finding the question.
Since it was something about "how the world could be made a good and happy place" it is probable that the idea was that the "Answer to the universe, life and everything else" is something about living happy.
Something that if you notice almost no one in the books really do.
Wait, you say "the idea was to destroy the Earth before the calculation could be completed" so you mean you think this was done on purpose? @SPA
08:14
Marvin the robot is the emblem of that, and the final happiness he gets is an acknowledgement from "God" that something went wrong
It was pretty clear that it was accident. No?
@SPArcheon true, after millions of years waiting, right? Don't remember many details. :/
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 TOTALLY done on purpose. Book two.
26
Q: Is there any explanation for why a planet would need to be destroyed to create a hyperspatial express route?

PearsonArtPhotoIn the opening bit of pretty much every version of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, the Earth is destroyed to make room for a hyper-spatial express route. Is there any basis for why this would need to be done, or is this purely a plot device to give a plausible reason to destroy the earth?

@SPArcheon huh, totally missed that while reading. Or totally forgot about it.
Or both? lol
That's a really good answer, pity the author deleted their account. :(
On the ground it is absurdity. The books start with Arthur protest because his home was going to be destroyed to build a new road, seconds latter you have the space invaders versions of the story with the Vogons destroying the planet to build an hyperspace tunnel
but the later book also give the thing a second reason, someone didn't want the question to be found.
@SPArcheon yeah, read that in the answer.
08:22
anyway, back to the topic, since many argue that the question/answer have something to do with "being happy"...
in "So Long And Thanks For All The Fish" there are multiple quotes about the girl.
> "As they talk they find more circumstances connecting them. Fenchurch reveals that, moments before her hallucinations, she had an epiphany while sitting in a café about how to make everything right, but then blacked out."
Notice that to be fair the Earth was already compromised by the Golgofrinchan by then.
Still, it is a valid headcanon
anyway, back to the original topic.
In the first season of MLP:FiM the ponies go to a race. Everyone gets a number
This is made explicit by Dash who calls out the fact that Twily never really trained before and asks her if she read the "Eggheads Guide to Running"
That started a pretty common joke back then.
Twilight = Friendship
Twilight = 42
Friendship = 42
Frienship is the answer to the universe, life and everything.
Since the cutie mark does indeed also reference the number 42... we will never know if Faust actually planned that and did that on purpose.
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 but enough ponies for now, better if I stop before the parrot gets an allergic reaction.
Too late, parrot died already.
LOL
On a more serious note: Talk about what you find important/interesting.... as long as it doesn't violate any SE rules, all I have to do is not read it ;)
@Tinkeringbell or nuke it ;)
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog maybe not your intention but I personally find a comment that starts with not fixed. not very friendly. I would try to ask a question instead Is there a corner case that makes that the fix doesn't workout on my profile page? or something of similar wording.
08:33
@Tinkeringbell if you are dead now... maybe this could be a more fitting avatar? :P
(and probably no one here will get it)
Nope, don't get it.. all I see is something that's supposed to look humanoid, I guess?
@SPArcheon indeed
@Luuklag let's just say that even if one doesn't recognize the character, one could recognize the Jiangshi clothes
08:36
The what?
All this reminds me off is a Geisha
A jiangshi, also known as a Chinese hopping vampire, is a type of reanimated corpse in Chinese legends and folklore. The characters for "jiangshi" are read geung-si in Cantonese, cương thi in Vietnamese, and gangsi in Korean. It is also known as phi dip chin in Thai, hantu pocong in Malay, and vampir cina in Indonesia. It is typically depicted as a stiff corpse dressed in official garments from the Qing Dynasty, and it moves around by hopping with its arms outstretched. It kills living creatures to absorb their qi, or "life force", usually at night, while during the day, it rests in a coffin or...
ah, so a vampire of sorts
I feel more like a zombie today, to be honest.
@SPArcheon most likely she did, yeah.
@rene I don't find it to be unfriendly, it's just stating a fact. No?
That is why I carefully formulated with using the words I personally
I'll keep my mouth closed if you all think it is fine.
08:42
e.g. you go to a shop, pay in cash and get wrong surplus, $5 instead of $10. You'll say "You didn't give me enough money back". :)
@rene no no
Keep sharing your opinions.
Wait did we just disagreed over something?
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 but You didn't give me enough money back is a sentence. not fixed isn't.
I demand ice cream
\o/
@Tinkeringbell why? Lack of sleep?
While you guys have been fighting over appropriate language, I suggested Yaakov a fix ;)
08:46
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 Slightly, yes... and some other dumb/boring stuff that's keeping my brain occupied to the point there's little room for anything serious XD
Sounds like time for weekend @Tink
@SPArcheon cocogoat?
Ah there are actually people reading my answer on the reopening experience
@Luuklag Eh, don't think that'll solve anything... except perhaps the sleep ;)
08:47
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 ..... Why it doesn't surprise me that the only thing you knew about the game is the cocogoat meme?
@Tinkeringbell Give's you some time to deal with the stuff ;)
@Tinkeringbell maybe sharing here will help? ;)
@SPArcheon you know me. ;)
Hello @Michael and welcome to the Tavern! If you have something to ask please do, you're not interfering in something important. :)
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 Meh... it's just dumb/stupid things like going to a party, meeting a friend of a friend, huddling close to take fun pictures then learning she's... pretty much an idiot when she starts ranting against vaccines and masks (because no oxygen)... but apparently does like to inhale 'laughing gas'. I told her that was the stupidest thing, and now my actual friend is kinda angry at me.
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 yep, let me just say that the actual joke in the game is that Qiqi sends you to search for a not-existing beast since she basically don't have any memory and didn't remember the word "cocconut". Since she did remember that the water was called "milk" she assumed that a "cocco goat" must exist.
My parents are being kinda impossible again too...
And I still need to pick out a floor, wallpaper, and bed.
08:50
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 And then you spend hours to search for something that never was
@Tinkeringbell why not just paint, way easier
Time limit for studying for a work-related exam is almost up, but I still haven't been able to pass the example test with a 100 percent score.
@Luuklag New home, it will crack.
Better to wait a few more years before getting someone to 'stuc' the walls and paint
@Tinkeringbell yeah that's true
@Tinkeringbell ouch. That's far from dump/stupid, sorry to hear. Hope you'll get it resolved soon (with the "actual friend" as you define it :)).
@Luuklag Don't want an IKEA floor :P
08:52
Wan't to get all fancy ;)
@SPArcheon ohh, I see. :)
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 and then all the other Shadows out there started the meme that Ganyu is the coccogoat, something that the game never said.
@Tinkeringbell welcome to the club.... :/
@SPArcheon well that's still fun :D
@Tinkeringbell lol... my new place comes with laminate flooring the colour of undead wood
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 Thanks. Just browsing.
08:57
@MichaelGreen fair. I see you're pretty active in The Heap™ so you're not new to the chat concept. :)
!!/coffee Michael
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 brews a cup of Espresso for @Michael
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 Don't think it will... But we'll see. There's been more disturbing behavior from the 'actual friend' lately... I think we're not real friends anymore, but she's just not ready to admit it.
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 Yours too? ouch :(
@Tinkeringbell I doubt you are the exception here ;)
@Luuklag Mostly want to get a good floor because all the heating I have will be the floors, and I don't want some cheap floor making me cold on cold winter days :P
@Tinkeringbell yeah that's bad, sorry to hear. Can't give you much advise sadly, just hear if you want to share and support you here virtually, including hug. :)
08:59
Meh.
@Tinkeringbell Yeah well then concrete it is ;)
@Tinkeringbell well not always, but my mother can become impossible at times, usually when comparing my kids to my brother's kids.
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 haha, really recognisable. Or comparing my kids to how my brothers were when they were young
@Luuklag Maybe. It wouldn't look too bad with the furniture I picked :P
Really upsets my wife at times
09:01
@Luuklag yeah, lol
@SmokeDetector !!/chocolate biscuit?

Also the main site queues have 11 reviews (that I can see) waiting. --- Would you also consider reviewing those suggested edits, and lowering the privileges so that the ~300 visitors per day have some permission to do more to help out.
While I can't see anything beyond the score for posts it looks like upvoting is a little light; there are people with over 50 answers and not 2K reputation, accepting also doesn't always happen - this pushes down the reputation of most of the users, who return less and less frequently.
Thanks for considering my request.
.... Darn chat editor ... This is supposed to be the first paragraph:
@JNat, do you accept additional requests? On Freelancing.SE their per-site-meta's Suggested Edits queue has only ever had
one reviewer with enough privilege to review visit that queue (and I have an edit stuck in there); this has been a problem there for 1/2 a dozen years.

Some sites (like the one you tried to onebox from) disable hotlinking, and some go to the extreme and serve NSFW images when trying to hotlink to them. @forestdistrustsStackExchange got chat banned due to this once.

user728672
um what did they cut? the money from your pocket?
That would be awesome skill. :D
Well you're right, the bangs (had to Google for this word now lol) are almost unchanged, the haircut was done for the rest of the hair which isn't very visible in the pictures. ;)
@GWarner well think it's pretty cheap, it cost 40 NIS, which are around $12
And done by professional hair dresser, he also has some celebs as clients. ;)

I am 100% sure we'll have fully independent star ships that can travel by themselves to far away star systems before we'll have any decent translator.
It's just not possible because AI can't guess the context like humans do.
(though in the above case it's not context, it's missing basic noun.)

@Ollie Permanent apathy.
No, no, no. I would lose my love for waffles.
@Rob all done
17:24
@SPArcheon oh think I watched that episode with my kids. But it was season 1, not 8, so probably different episode...
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 not even the worse episode from that view point. Back in season 5 they managed to put in what is basically a rewrite of Harrison Bergeron
(kids didn't like it, they watched maybe 3 episodes)
@Luuklag gone
THIS Harrison Bergeron.
"Harrison Bergeron" is a dystopian science-fiction short story by American writer Kurt Vonnegut, first published in October 1961. Originally published in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, the story was republished in the author's Welcome to the Monkey House collection in 1968. == Plot == In the year 2081, the 211th, 212th, and 213th amendments to the Constitution dictate that all Americans are fully equal and not allowed to be smarter, better-looking, or more physically able than anyone else. The Handicapper General's agents enforce the equality laws, forcing citizens to wear...
> the Constitution dictate that all Americans are fully equal and not allowed to be smarter, better-looking, or more physically able than anyone else. The Handicapper General's agents enforce the equality laws, forcing citizens to wear "handicaps": masks for those who are too beautiful, loud radios that disrupt thoughts inside the ears of intelligent people, and heavy weights for the strong or athletic.
@Luuklag gone
17:29
@SPArcheon I don't know about the smarter, better-looking, and more physically able. Looks OK at a glance, but that's not nature. Young people are a bit stronger than elders, for example.
@Ollie read the wikipedia page, the summary to the short story is there. It is not right at all and quite nightmarish.
@SPArcheon bloody hell.
@Ollie and there is a MPL episode that managed to reference that story.
Which hopefully kids won't realize fully.
Yet has one of the darker lines in all the show songs.

Rob
@JNat Thank you very much. The one thing missing is that if the privileges allowed the "average person of X reputation who came to visit" (statistically based) to have a greater ability to participate in the moderation of their site (maybe 35-50% lower reputation for all but the lowest levels) - but I understand if you don't want to lower it without greater study (or at all). Thanks for clearing those queues! (jumping for joy).
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 (golly that's a long username 😀) "What's up old friend?" - probably all kinds of things since the last time we chatted haha. Last year I moved to a new house (not far) and had a second kiddo (boy this time). This year I got a new job. What's up with you?
