@JourneymanGeek Look son, I can't remember all the details, in the height of battle, everything is a bit fuzzy

Can anyone find the image that is supposed to be in this answer?
I could have sworn that titles didn't used to be cut off with ... when they were too long in the search results...
(and that final ellipsis is me trailing off, no content lost ;p)
06:04
@GWarner 6 years away from being born.
@GWarner well better laugh than cry! :D
@bobble nope, looks like it's lost forever.

@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 I'm afraid so. Participating on the site is not doing it for me any more. Still use it professionally, but that's about it.

@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 blamed!
08:21
@Bart this is just a chat, not SE main site, lol. You can slack here, come once in a while for a coffee/beer/[name your poison] etc. ;)
I might be just missing the good old days, but also think we can all have more fun with more people around to discuss both silly and serious things from time to time. :)
(90% silly, 10% serious? @Luuk @Spev what you think?)
If it is you its more 99% silly and 1% misc. ;)
@Rob natural action, I'm innocent
:D
@Luuklag 90% silly, 10% toilet stuff, you mean? :P
Can't remember the last time this room was serious...
Well depends what you mean "serious" ;)
I meant any discussion that isn't just silly, like we discuss army stuff and such.
armies aren't silly? That's new...
08:29
Armies are silly
.... Jinx
Glad to know I'm not the only one though :D
Army also has toilets, so giving me lots of things to discuss, but still... ;)
And here he is!
You've not army toiletted until you've dug your own
08:32
@JourneymanGeek think doing it in "shared pit" is even worse? (one big hole in the ground, which acts as the toilets.)
Like chemical toilets, just without the chemicals. :D
Not as bad as a shallow hole and a little bit of powder
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 Sounds like fraternity camp
@Luuklag Military training isn't all thaaaat different
@JourneymanGeek Might even be milder
military training that is
08:37
Maybe less beer...
@JourneymanGeek with what I had (wide and pretty deep hole) you got to see what everyone else before you did, too well.
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 we used a earth auger...
so nice and deep
@Luuklag well, yeah such things are very bonding. You get to know things about your mates that nobody else know. :P
@JourneymanGeek let me Google it...
oh wow lol, you mean each soldier used such thing on his own?? @Journeyman
Naw
I got injured
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 We had like a 25m long, 2m wide hole
08:40
The hole I had was made by tractors.
@JourneymanGeek no beer on camp
SO I ended up doing the work like that
at least not for the newbies
@Luuklag oh, wow. Where? From what I remember, what I had was maybe 10 meters long, but more deep, I'd say at least 3 meters.
08:42
@Luuklag Units have em... people got plenty drunk
As for beer, it's big no no, however smoking was allowed.
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 Ours was about 1m deep. But camp was only like 3 days.
@Luuklag sounds like you had fun there. ;)
Well the "toilets" I talk about were used by the whole camp (small camp, but still, around 50 people) and were being "reset" by tractors every two weeks or so.
It was just somewhere on an estate. Whe had to pull pine trees out of the meadows
It was a small camp in the middle of the desert, without any permanent buildings. Only tents.
08:49
getting woken up at 5 am
sleeping in tents, having a typical rainy dutch summer
Eating in a large tent, only start your hot meal when everyone had, and songs were sung
So your meal would be cold by the time you could start
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 lots of (cheap) beer in military camps - there was a rumour it was 'specially' watered down
@Luuklag hehe, our meals were cold to begin with. :P
@Luuklag after having to keep watch or be in patrol for one hour at least during the night? ;)
@JourneymanGeek beer is good! :D
But yeah, interesting that they allow it.
heey
abuse of mod power!! :D
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 Watered down bears sound dangerous
@Luuklag another direction! What about showers? You had any?
@JourneymanGeek totally
Needless to say we didn't have actual showers, used these to take showers:
A jerrycan (also written as jerry can or jerrican) is a robust liquid container made from pressed steel. It was designed in Germany in the 1930s for military use to hold 20 litres (4.4 imp gal; 5.3 US gal) of fuel. The development of the jerrycan was a significant improvement on earlier designs, which required tools and funnels to use, and it contained many innovative features for convenience of use and robustness. After widespread use by both Germany and the Allies during the Second World War, today similar designs are used worldwide for fuel and water containers, some of which are also produced...
We didn't take showers outfield
08:56
Put one somewhere high, open the lid a bit so the water trickle down, and use it for shower.
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 haha, no that not.
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 none
@Luuklag well three days isn't that bad
We spent two weeks there before going home.
So had no choice but to improvise.
Some were too shy to do such thing, but somehow they managed to stay quite clean and not smell as bad as you'd expect. No idea how. lol
@JourneymanGeek at all? For how long?
Up to a week?
@JourneymanGeek hmm, smelly. :D
We changed and aired our uniforms
09:01
But really, two weeks without shower isn't something I can ever go through.
09:21
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 all gone

@JourneymanGeek Still, it's an improvement over the first iteration:
11:39
@JNat almost all my meetings are in the mornings. You don't have any foreigners on the teams you are in? Usually when I have meetings with people to the east of me (the america's) we schedule meetings in their early morning, which is my (late) afternoon.
I have no meetings at all from now until Friday afternoon... :D
@Tinkeringbell Weekend!!!
I have a 3 hour meeting tomorrow morning
12:00
@Luuklag Heh. More like 'I can get so much done if I hadn't had to wait for the compiler now :P'
@Tinkeringbell That's like paid weekend, even better!
Hahaha true ... but sorry to say those paid weekends never seem to last for more than 10 minutes :(
Hmm coming to think of it, I have some programming problems to fix myself
I have some VBA code that runs fine as a macro, but fails to run as an Workbook_Open event
Or well, it doesn't fail, just produces zero output
I finally have the mocks for my 'unit' test working. Stupid tests.
Testing? Meh no need
12:13
I mostly feel it's a waste of my time since... there's no pipeline that ever runs those tests XD Why automate them?! :P
Why test in the first place. You build something, which either works or not.
That's how I roll xD
Well I do secretly like having them ;) I just refactored quite a bit to make some stuff more easy to reuse for the thing I was building, and a quick check shows I didn't break anything :P
Not breaking things is always nice
12:22
Except when you're in a place where breaking things is the purpose ;)
13:02
@Luuklag there's other European folks, and some interactions in Slack, but rarely a need for meetings
user728672
@bobble Nope. Not available by Wayback Machine. Not by that address. I read somewhere that if an image isn't accessed in a years time it's deleted.
user728672
13:23
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 Saved the existing image in bobble's question. Bravo! But isn't that a typo in the title?
@GWarner no idea lol didn't look deeply in other parts, let me see...
user728672
I couldn't be sure if uniconify was intentional since unicoRnify was referenced in comments. not that closed posts arent worthy of correction anyway.
user728672
just had to tease ya about missing that
unicornify is the term, it's a service/API written by balpha that turned any email/hash into a picture of unicorn.
Anyway title and tags fixed. @GWarner
Thanks for the heads up! ;)
user728672
Okay.
13:32
Closed doesn't always mean off topic.
Duplicates are one, old questions that are no longer relevant are the other type.
It was on topic and good when posted, so better be kept.
@Ollie knows.
:D
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 (and still does unicornify.pictures)
@Mithical huh, it was down for years forgot he fixed it.

@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 no idea what you're talking about. :D
@Ollie I know! lol but no worry nothing blue this time. ;)

It's fun to troll someone who just arrived. Like poking someone who just woke up and still don't know where he is. :P
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 what if they poke back?
@Ollie well doing it with my kids often, but alas they got used to it. lol. And they don't dare poking back. Yet. :D
Heheh. Soon.
@Ollie hey, why at me?! The one with ballsack wasn't posted by me. glaring at certain red parrot :P

@GWarner it can be; it's a cute birth mark.

well that explains alot..
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 A six pointed star surrounded by five smaller stars. Also the bigger star is actually covering a seventh star. So, not only the stars represent the original six character but by pure chance already included a seventh star.... there are also exactly 42 points (6 * 7)
user728672
@Ollie Okay! LOL. I noticed it was missing ALT image description tags. The primary reason I was editing posts of any kind.
user728672
Editted out missing ALT attributes.
@GWarner I'm gonna have to send you some feedback because the system isn't in place yet.
No offense.
18:04
@Ollie That nearly 100% addresses the complaints I have over the current system. I like that my previous proposals are being considered!
user728672
I'm okay with that.
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog so do I, actually. '
To quote Shog: Y'all did the homework, and it shows. +1
Rob
Rob
@Glo, I noticed that you disapproved of the rejection; the improvement now truncates the excerpt. Do you feel that I reviewed that incorrectly?:
user728672
@Ollie To a blind or visually impaired person, they need those descriptions if they are important and aren't already described by the text(s). If not they should be nullified by nonot having anything between the [] or minimum of ALT= (screen readers will skip them.
Rob
Rob
Should everything be prefixed with "For questions about"?
user728672
18:16
Reviewing edit suggestion. IS the red box signify I wanted to remove the image? The html change shouldn't do that.
user728672
Only remove the moronic "insert desciption here" so it isnt read by screen reader software
Rob
Rob
If you remove it then replace it with suitable text; otherwise people searching for that text, looking for images that need visually impaired descriptions added, won't be able to find such posts.
2
user728672
I already run queries on other sites for the default ALT text, because nobody changes it to describe an image. But if texts describe what is going on in the image, it becomes redundant to repeat it, but it would be better then what is there now.
@GWarner food+drink+boost
@SPArcheon see? Simple! :)
user728672
Thank you. I won't bother with the posts on Meta.
18:33
@Rob no rule, but it does make sense to have it.
user728672
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 Yea, but I think I'll go for some sleep now. It's been a long night in central Flori-duhh

> FAQ: "After that, replace the default "enter image description here" with something meaningful. For the screen readers of visually impaired, for browsers that don't show images, for cases where Imgur is blocked, and for search engine indexes: please enter a good description.": meta.stackexchange.com/a/75498/282094 and What's the point in adding alt-text to an image?.
@GWarner night? It's now 2:36pm in there. Unless you're not in USA?
@Rob sure that's also common sense but the "something meaningful" is the bottleneck. It requires extra effort that only few are willing to make, or capable of making.
Even I don't really know what I should put as alt text of images. Dry description of what's being shown? Summary of the post? No idea.
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 I wrote a little guide
@Mithical heh. If only it could be on SE somewhere... ;)
user728672
18:42
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 Ive been awake all night last night.
user728672
@Mithical nice!
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 It's open-source, so it could be, given proper credit
@Rob I have had excerpts rejected because they didn't start with that with the "lacks usage guidance" reason. I saw no problem with the edit, especially because the author was updating the wiki as well and decided to make a small change to the excerpt. That blurb "For questions about" used to be removed automatically from that tooltip IIRC? FWIW, I have no problem with you rejecting that either.
@Mithical the tab/window title does not include the help center page title, it's always only "Codidact Meta". ;)
(bookmarked, but if I'll want to bookmark other pages from the meta, it would be a problem)
18:45
@GWarner oh, dear Elsa.
Rob
Rob
@Glorfindel Thanks for your reply.
user728672
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 Yup, dear Elsa. Gone and now to sleep/
user728672
So what was that edit suggestion telling me with the red box around it? That I wanted to remove the image?
Rob
Rob
That the suggestor had removed, green means that they added.
18:56
@Glorfindel The regex for removing that was overzealous and removed things it shouldn't have, so it was changed to favor keeping it rather than removing it whenever possible to reduce false positives.
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 pfft. ptiuuu. pfft.
Maybe check pfft that someone's mouth is not open when you pfft throw the pffffft hairball
user728672
@Rob So someone reviewing it and not reading my reason might think I editted out a picture. That is screwed up.
user728672
@ShadowWizardWearingMaskV2 I just got a secondwind. I might make it till after dinner now
user728672
Another visual faux pas @Rob
user728672
Okay. I'll end this on a funny note. When I was first directed to running queires it put me on the Islamic religion site, because thats where the SQL originated. I ran it. and I edited 5 9 year old posts before I realized what was happenning.
user728672
19:09
ahh an image! thanx smoky
user728672
Hmm I like that.. 平和 is japanese for 'peace'
user728672
平和 yall!
20:52
@GWarner (as a person who edited to add ALT text for the images there) While the text surrounding the images does describe generally what the images are showing, it does not describe specifically what they are showing. For example, the image under "2. Leave closed reasons" can be inferred to show leave-close reasons, from the surrounding text.
However someone who can't see the image wouldn't be able to know exactly which leave-close reasons are available, which is useful to know (and is already being discussed in some answers). Thus describing the exact text that appears is useful to someone image-impaired.
user728672
21:40
@bobble I haven't gotten brave enough to try to fill the ALT text with more then one sentence yet. Though I understand they can be up to 200 characters.
whoop, I write too much then
better than too little
user728672
well all the guidelines ive read is they need to be detailed enough, but not redundant or too verbose, a second or two to understand the image for us.. it should be 1 or two second speakable statement.
user728672
ive sat on the phone with a brother who flies thru pages. barely hearing it say what each tab is before he zeroes in on content
user728672
@bobble exactly
user728672
DIY is terrible about approving edits it can take a week for a response. (very few users over 2k) and edits are limited to 2 un reviewed edits at a time
user728672
21:49
so you favor even a simple ALT over nullifying it completely?
user728672
DIY has 22000+ suspect posts. about half are over 10 UV
When I posted puzzles on Puzzling (seems so long ago...), the usual format was rules, then image, then CSV which was equivalent to the image. Usually the ALT text for the image would be something like "puzzle image - see transcription below", but even "puzzle image" would be better over nothing I would think
user728672
Been learning the SQL code for the queries. Even modified a few.
user728672
Maybe I'm not awake as I thought. I forgot I I need to Inspect the page to see the alt text, since edit review doesnt show it.
You can click on "Markdown" to show the Markdown source of a post/edit
user728672
21:57
@bobble Ok I see that. those look fine to me. as you said it helps to know what is going on in the image. well done.
@GWarner you could also see my latest question here, where the surrounding text does describe what is happening in the image, but I just threw in an image description to clarify exactly what the image was showing. Necessary? Not really. Nice to have? Probably.
user728672
Trying to see if my outdated OCR software has new language dictionaries.. MY first ALT edits were on Islamic site (long story) and no one knew what the hebrew text in the image said.
user728672
@bobble I see.. I tend to believe it is better that way..
user728672
