@SonictheCuriouserHedgehog stop worrying about rejection. One or two is fine

1 hour later…
01:18
@Luuklag heh, good to know! :)
@Rob there are two versions: "work uniform" and "official uniform". The kid has ranks taken from his dad's work uniform, they're not shiny as the official uniform.
Rob
Rob
I think here the "official" is called "dress".
@Catija with my kids I filled a bathtub with water (cold) and added boiling water from a kettle until it was warm. Might work for you, just need more water... :)
@Catija lol how can he see anything?? ;)
@Luuklag huh? Thought you're already married? ;)
@Catija hard at any age, yeah. My 8 y/o son explained to my sister today the full plot of a TV show he love to watch, it's a TV show meant for teenagers, way above his age and involves action, drama and even kidnapping so he had to work hard. But he did it. :)
3:30 am.... ding dong... time to sleep. Cya everyone! /cc @Tec saw some pings blame Tavern for keeping me busy this time...
Rob
Rob
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating I won't have time, for a few hours, to look up the details; but I think US has shiny, not so shiny and camo (not shiny). These correspond to formal, on duty, and fighting.
01:33
@Rob exactly. Here we have only two, three if you consider navy.
(on duty and fighting are same uniform, been in battle once so know for sure)
Rob
Rob
The Space Force seems a little shiner, and it's new (possibly reflecting new regs); but I guess camo doesn't work so well in space, once you're spotted.
02:11
@Rob Well - if you think about it, airforce has use for camo for base defence and such
usually pilots are not in combat fatigues so its a different uniform of sorts. Navy dosen't need camo either...
Though some navies and airforces do grey/blue 'camo'
then there's pink camo.For when you wish they hadn't seen you
Rob
Rob
02:30
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating There are several categories: Full Dress, Mess Dress, Service Dress, Combat, Parade (combat+), Physical Training (combat-).
Oh, out here its fatigue, PT, No1-4
I can't remember what a no2 is though
... there's a no 5
But most of the time you live in combat uniiform, or combat bottoms with issue T shirt

5 hours later…
07:12
> In keeping with the Israel Defense Forces' doctrine of a People's Army, mess uniform is not worn inside Israel.
No mess in my place. ;)
@JourneymanGeek quite like what I had, yeah. While in the base you wear what I called "work uniform", which is actually called "field dress" and when going home, we have the "service dress" which looks better and should be kept clean.
Interesting to note, that while in the reserve service we have only the field dress, and we don't get any service dress. Guess it's meant to identify those in reserve duty in easier way... if you see someone with dirty uniform (outside of a military base of course ;)) you know they're in reserve duty, not Active duty.
07:28
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating Isn't a People's Army the communist term for an army?
@M.A.R. Well yes and no
There's a distinction between a "professional" army, one where folks are drafted, and one where national defence is kinda part of the overall national identity
@M.A.R. what Mr. Geek said ^^
But anyway, what it actually means, is that our army is a place where people from different cultures who don't know each other should bond together.
Consider the US military until-vietnam - where you had a base of regular forces, beefed up by the draft (which also tended to be how feudal states ran their militaries if you think about it)
When the army was formed, Israel was very small, population-wise, and people arrived to live here from all over the world.
and the profeessional military model
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating well - we kinda snuck a peek at your notes when we did ours :D
07:43
Army was a key feature in making our society, maybe even culture, what it is today.
Without it, we would be made of separate clans of people. @M.A.R
@JourneymanGeek lol
"Oh, this gentleman is definately mexican" "No, that's spanish! Honest" (psst, could we find a spanish Israeli? In case?")
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating proposal for a cliënt ;)
I don't know if you guys are aware, but Neo (moderator on TWP) has posted a resignation notice. The other two moderators aren't nearly as active, so TWP as of now is effectively not being moderated. I know that Neo doesn't actively use the TL, so you might want to raise this and arrange some cover.
@Snow there's some awareness of it, and that some sites don't have enough cover
@Luuklag whaaaat?? Your wife knows about it?
:P
07:51
@Luuklag IS THAT AN UMALUT?
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating yeah like what?
dotty things!
umlaut :P
07:52
> cliënt
like in the fiancé
@JourneymanGeek in Dutch they're called a 'trema'
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating In dutch we call it a "voorstel" which does translate to proposal. But perhaos a quote is the better translation.
Umlaut is german
07:53
@Tinkeringbell I can barëly spëll in ënglish.
@JourneymanGeek I know. You only messed up two letters this time :D
@Luuklag yup. "proposal" is used for asking someone to marry you... as far as I know... ;)
@JourneymanGeek Thanks. I'm not really following the site anymore, so don't know if anyone else can step up and inject some kind of motivativeness into the site.
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating This is correct. I proposed to my partner on Valentines Day (yes, I really did).
@Snow broadly, we still haven't recovered from a lot of the damage of the last two years
In theory the CMs can cover short term (and might be a useful learning experience/hands on opportunity to learn mod tools I guess?)
@JourneymanGeek Yeah. It took me a long time to mentally recover from it. I really did need that year away from the place.
07:57
@Snow I think we all reacted in different ways :)
@JourneymanGeek I have no idea how you managed to carry on with things. You must know some serious meditation shit.
@Snow ooh....
Partially it was spite, partially it was the ability to tag team
Yeah, I just couldn't see the bad things go on unchecked, I had to say something or attempt to help things. When it came to a point where it wasn't working, I just had to give in or break.
So, I quit, then realised that it wasn't helping. Came back, handled things till it was too much, took a week off, came back, the other mods did the same...
Oh, and lots of sabotage :D
Like cross posting stuff off the blog :D
If memory serves meta.stackexchange.com/questions/332499/… is an example
Haha. I don't have that sublety.
08:06
lol
That's vaguely a pillar of how I get things done.
and a much better use of it than what I used to do in my 20s :)
(I was one of those annoying, too clever guys who's say something, and someone would realise 10 minutes later what I really meant ;) )
@Snow ohh.... classic! :)
Why you say "partner" by the way? You're still not married? (wait, it was this year?)
sigh I miss thegood old days when Shog and Tim would drop by, talk some shit about recipes, impart some incisive words about some current moderation issues and generally make people feel valued in whatever role they had.
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating Yes, this year.
@Snow congrats! When will it happen then? You have date and place?
(place you don't have to share ;))
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating No, not yet. Still in the planning phases. Don't even have a ring yet.
@Snow you... proposed without a ring?! It's like coding without IDE... ;)
The whole point is to put the ring on the partner's finger, no?
08:12
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating I used a framework - basically presented her with a ring-sizing guide as a proxy.
LOL
aka you don't know her (finger) size.....
And a request for further requirements for what she wanted - choosing together as opposed to me just picking something up off the internet.
@Snow huh. Fair point!
Especially in these days when I can't go into a jewellers shop.
@Snow does COVID have any effect on the planning?
08:14
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating Yes, we can't visit locations in person. Can't speak with people face to face, etc.
@Snow yeah that sucks.... but what about amount of participants? Here it's limited to about 50, which is kind of absurd.
Many people just wait with the wedding.
We just want something fairly small anyway. Maybe something later and separate for a wider group.
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating it's just a propaganda term then
@Luuk you remember when/how/where you proposed to your wife? (not clients... ;))
@M.A.R. no, don't think so. Just bad translation from Hebrew.
08:24
52 mins ago, by Journeyman Geek
@M.A.R. Well yes and no
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating yeah on her birthday
To be clear, we also have a 'People's Army'.
But my wise conclusion in 2021 has been, "everyone sucks". And this time I mean it.
(And funnily enough, what's claimed is that without this army, without this 'unity', we'd also be separate clans of people)
It's the same everywhere.
@Snow Congratulations :)
@Luuklag hehe, nice! Was she surprised?
@M.A.R. ?
@M.A.R. might be, sure.
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating Dunno, I just can't help being cynical anymore
08:34
@Snow Shog still does that sometimes :D
s/everyone/every government
(And yes, even the quiet ones)
@M.A.R. you let the cynical beast loose? ;)
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating Only on a toilet
And with that successful dirty pun, I take my leave to have lunch early for once
@Tinkeringbell Thank you, ma'am!
@JourneymanGeek Good to see. I follow him on Twitter as well.
@Snow I mostly use twitter for SE gossip :D
08:38
@JourneymanGeek I mostly use Twitter for the Andrew Cotter videos.
To borrow a phrase - "Its a good way to know things before I know I need to know them"
Rob
Rob
@JourneymanGeek The space and air are two completely different forces.
Navy does need camo, for landing.
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating Yeah
@Rob ah, but see...
We went for dinner, and afterwards made a walk along the river where I proposed
08:47
there's often a ground/defence component to airforces, and a space force may need that too
and these may be potentially 'infantry'
there's also specific uniform requirements for say, someone flying a plane or driving a tank, or being a gunner on a ship
Lets say we have a space force base on Area 51
and some idiot decides to naruto it
you're not going to have folks in flight suits dealing with them
You would have MPs (who often have different unique uniforms for reasons) or some specific base defence unit
In combat, more so
My Father In Law used to be in the airforce, and was stationed at a US base for his last service years. There he head to wear light camo. Was a real pain for the Dutch DOD to get a uniform that matched spec
Everything they have is either airforce blue, or just regular forest camo
Rob
Rob
@M.A.R. I always thought of it as a propagandist term, especially when part of it's function is against a faction of a countries population.
@Luuklag exactly
Actually, least for us, service specific camo (like navy blues or airforce greys) came with our (very much disliked) digital camo uniforms
digital camo, is that matrix style 1's and 0's ?
the modern all boxy ones
the problem isn't the pattern
Old uniforms are cotton, and after a few years of use, damned comfy
the new ones are some synthetic that's lighter but a bit stiff and scratchy
My time was the '80s' pattern
08:56
@JourneymanGeek Are you that old ;)
naw
we just used it till the late 2000s
I was born around when that pattern was introduced
though wierdly, army lore was basically "We went from monochrome green to this"
._.
Digicam masks? I mean I guess its the sign of the times but....
Seeing my FIL always had a deskjob, as long as I know my wife at least, I never saw him wear camo
except for in the US.
He usually wore a suit, and on occasions a display uniform
@Luuklag served my 2 1/2 years in it
and lots of folks tend not to wear camo on desk jobs.
@JourneymanGeek yeah kinda pointless
My uniform looks like... well, like my avatar.
09:00
I think the two guys who I replaced actually wore mechanics coveralls :D
@Luuklag well yes and no
In some mlitaries, it promotes espirit de corps...
Also, some folks would do the "wear one day, air one day" rotation
so no one would notice you were wearing the same thing, and you smelt a little off anyway :D
Rob
Rob
Operational Camouflage Pattern (OCP), originally codenamed Scorpion W2, is a military camouflage pattern adopted in 2015 by the United States Army for use as the U.S. Army's main camouflage pattern on the Army Combat Uniform (ACU). This pattern officially replaced the U.S. Army's previous Universal Camouflage Pattern (UCP) as the official combat uniform pattern for most U.S. soldiers at the end of September 2019. The pattern also superseded the closely related MultiCam, a pattern previously used for troops deploying to Afghanistan. The United States Air Force is also replacing their Airman Battle...
09:32
@JourneymanGeek yeah my FIL couldn't wear one more then a day, as in Florida you just get covered in sweat for doing nothing
@M.A.R. eating before 12 pm is still breakfast. ;)
I'm not eating anything today. *rolls eyes* Have I mentioned I dislike fast days?
@M.A.R. that's good, let it out so it won't be angry.

Perhaps I'll get myself a "lekkerbek" today.
Ugggh you're making me want fat food too @Luuklag
@Tinkeringbell go get some!
Rob
Rob
@Luuklag I think recruiting counts as almost exclusively a "desk job", and they usually wear camo, except for the Marines:
@Luuklag Nah, if my calculations are correct there won't be any healthy food this weekend, so I really shouldn't.
Maybe later :P
I have no self-discipline so it will probably be something like 'next week'
"kroket" anyone? "Patatje oorlog"?
10:47
@Tinkeringbell like monday ;)
@rene bitterballen!
@rene I could do without the "oorlog" part ;)
I prefer patat speciaal over oorlog.
I think the "oorlog" part is appropriate given the other on-going discussion ...
@Rob yeah, but there they have to "sell" service, and kids look up to uniforms. So thats a logical thing to do I think. He had more of a strategic role.
@rene yes indeed
10:52
@rene Ah, I didn't even notice :( You're right :D
Rob
Rob
@Luuklag J.A.G. has camo, do you think Rod Ponton did it better?
@Luuklag joining what?
@M.A.R. huh, so you're 1.5 hours ahead of me.... so weird.
11:24
@ShadowWizardisVaccinating fastening
11:36
@Luuklag oh lol.... no.... first it's "fasting", which means not eating and drinking on purpose... second, I can't join @Mith because he's too far away (well, both of them ;)) and third, I'm not religious so not following those commands. I do fast one time in year, but the motive isn't religious.
Israel as whole isn't "religious" as well, e.g. many markets and restaurants are open today as usual (usual in COVID days, but still) despite the fasting day.

@ShadowWizardisVaccinating laziness and custom profile picture on some sites...
@Rob no, and no... this isn't like Shabbat, "even" religious Jews are allowed to use electricity and drive as usual today, they're just not "allowed" to eat. And I'm not religious, so using elevators any time.
@MetaAndrewT. how you know?

Because using the elevator takes all day, in a highrise.

12:47
A Shabbat elevator is an elevator which works in a special mode, operating automatically, to satisfy the Jewish law requiring Jews to abstain from operating electrical switches on Shabbat (the Sabbath). These are also known as Sabbath or Shabbos elevators. == Description and history == Jewish law forbids those who observe it from undertaking various forms of "work" on the Sabbath, including that they may not create sparks or fires. In recent times, this has been extrapolated to also cover the operation of electrical equipment. An elevator may be marked with a sign noting that it is specia...

@Rob luckily (?), those are operating only in places with majority of religious people, or in hotels so not relevant for my day-to-day life.

No elevator in your home.
In modern buildings in Israel, there might be one "Shabbat elevator" but also at least one other "ordinary" elevator which keeps working as usual even during Shabbat.
looks like the first orientation period for the new CM is to answer and doing some moderation on SE (which is... great?!)

@Rob I live in a small, old, building, in a place with almost no religious people, so only one elevator, and non-Shabbat, it's working always.

Over here it's a popular children's joke to push every button, in various order, causing some elevators to go up and down; following the order of the button presses. Those were replaced by smarter elevators, but we had them for several years.

I could have really used that during the troubles :D
The follow functionality's pretty awesome. I should use it more.
If we get someone new doing MSE modding (and there's no plan for it at the moment, or need)- EVEN as a experienced mod, that's the one thing I would recommend
follow every announcement, and every controversial post, and notifications basically do a good chunk of the work for you
14:59
Hmm looking at that I notice a Stepanie on the CM team, don't think I ever saw them around.
Based on her profile bio, it looks like she plays a more internal role, maybe?
@Spevacus Yeah, but she does wear diamonds all around
Bling, bling.
@Luuklag If I recall she's somewhere above Juan on the org chart

Thanks.
I'm actually pondering a question about notifications/rss feeds for teams
(on MSO, not MSE :D)
I can't really talk about it but that FR will not be granted as asked but there will be some changes that make Teams available network-wide rather than SO only.
@Catija yeah hence the pondering
First I need to work out what's the problem I am really trying to solve ;)
Rob
Rob
18:14
I seem to recall having an inbox about a post on Teams, not sure about RSS.
Teams used to send inbox notifications but they released "For you" which moved all notifications into the sidebar. But the concern (from my understanding) is that things like RSS feeds might not require validation of access? But I know nothing about RSS feeds, so that may be totally wrong.
@Catija there's ways to require a log in but its too complex
but yeah, first I need to work out what problem needs to be solved :D
@Catija correct, you can't really authenticate an rss feed. Or at least I know not many rss readers that would work if the url sends a 401 response first ...
18:30
@rene pretty sure there's feeds that have username/password auth
but thats far beyond the scope of what I'd want to ask for

OK. No rush, just checking. I noticed that one of the votes must have gotten retracted so we'll not have an example to use if the other person does, too. :D
Rob
Rob
It still says "Close (1)" and Review Completed, so it's equally wrong; if not more confusing. :)

20:14
Cool - that's... a good idea. :P
It's odd, I thought it had two close votes previously but... if it did, we apparently don't keep retracted close votes in the post history?
It definitely had two close votes previously, I remember that quite vividly.
I'm surprised those aren't preserved in the mod timeline.
can confirm
Hmmm, yeah, the history says that the one existing close vote was "cleared" but it clearly isn't cleared.
Rob
Rob
If they are on the UI they are private (flags), if they are Reviews they are (hidden) public (?).
Shouldn't the review history page show who voted to close in review, though? The way it shows who voted to leave open?
Rob
Rob
20:20
It might (probably?) used to, but now if you click on the close link (in the Review History) it shows three reviewers, for leave open; and no closers (since they flagged?).
The first one flagged/VTC'd for certain, or it couldn't enter the queue, what the second closer did I can't see.
If the first closer withdrew then technically that ought to flush the whole thing; but it's never worked that way

Q: How do I handle null values in a generic var comparison?

Phate01I have a method retrieving a value from a dictionary by key, or returning a default value if not found public static TValue GetValueOrDefault<TKey, TValue>(this IDictionary<TKey, TValue> dict, TKey key, TValue defaultValue) { if (dict.TryGetValue(key, out TValue existingValue)) { ...

This looks like the same thing happened?
Bleh, no SO rep.
I thought you could see review histories regardless of rep?
Oh, you can't see the close count.
Yeah but I can't see the pending close votes on the post. (ninja'd)
That review is "completed" in the review task view but not the timeline, for me.
20:33
Huh, interesting.
Maybe that's a close votes privilege thing?
Weird that those messages ("Completed" and the 3x"Leave Open") is tied behind that, if so.
It could also be a "See Full Review History" thing from the 10k tools.
21:10
Probably. There are a few things gated behind rep that probably don't need to be - that's one of them.
Rob
Rob
@Catija Perhaps that's a manifestation of the bug, I am short of the 3K to see the Review History but I can see that 3 reviewers left it open - kind of a mix of permission, should I see all or none. The Post History looks the same.
Not being able to see the number of close votes on the question itself is OK - people who can't close don't even see the word "Close" so showing the number of votes doesn't make sense. The review history page should be accessible to everyone, so that's OK... the only thing that seems off is that the word "completed" is MIA, even thought the banner is red, which tells you that it's completed.
Tangential opinion: I feel like, once you gain access to a particular review queue, you should be able to see the full history - as in, all review actions in that queue by all users, not just yourself, via that queue's History page. I can sort of understand why the original decision to hide it behind 10k was made, but I dunno. It would be sorta nice to have an easy to access list of how other users are reviewing in a queue you participate in, or are just starting to participate in.
Beyond that point, I'm not really able to come up with more justification for such a change, though...
i'd say it would create a learning opportunity
if you could take a look at the actions people are taking right out of the gate, as a sort of... introduction to how you are meant to use it
Yeah, precisely.

@Spevacus I agree. On MSE, with over 10K, I have the same permission to see the closers as I do on SO; where I don't have permission to review. The first one should (at least traditionally, unless we change it) be hidden (though they are revealed if everyone else VTCs) if the close isn't successful; and apparently (in the case outlined above) the second one used the UI (or are they hidden because they wanted to close in the queue) so should be hidden if they flagged, but not if they
reviewed.
Convoluted enough?
all the parenthesis made my brain hurt

Skip over them, the first time through.
It actually saves writing the same thing twice, with either pre or post conditions - inline exceptions.
Also known as "if (x) exit;".

IE: None on both.
Review permission here.
You have rep there but not here, so it's the opposite direction for you; assuming that the bug applies equally.
But they probably don't have any new Review Queues, so YMMV.
I disliked the most recent round of changes to close reasons and visibility
particularly on SO
i'd rather closure to be visible and auditable by everyone (without needing to go to the timeline)
this coming from someone who, used to close questions quite often
i never really had any unwanted backlash from closing questions

@Rob Probably broke it here, this is what it should look like, and MetaAndrew can see the closers (at least a few builds ago), this seems very similar (and status-completed), other than that, no exact duplicate.
