Did SE implement stricter rate limits on chat searching recently?
The latest chat deploy was.... yesterday, so it's possible some things changed.

@Mithical I used search after that build and didn't see any rate limits. You using some sort of script?
It could also be that each request is registering multiple times for some reason. (That's happened with me; sometimes my computer mouse registers two clicks when I click it once.)
That was one major cause of why I used to keep getting "too many requests" when using SE on IE11 on Windows 8 - the browser makes an extra request on every page load to load a configuration file that is used for Start screen tiles

"you have been invited to join the trashcan"
Weird that no user has yet tried to post a questionon meta claiming that the message is not welcoming.
we've already had those
but the no-invite trashcan has a more hostile description, so I don't use it often
@BlueSoul wtf is giggle?
@Magisch get in the f*ing bin?
@djsmiley2kTMW good question. I just found that picture on a twitter thread, I don't recognize the app
> Trashcan room for messages that don't belong in the Tavern. If it's here, it was probably a problem, and you should stop.
it's apparently a women only social media network
10:40
@Magisch we had? -_-'......
@BlueSoul yeah. I should go looking

11:42
u 'avin a giggle there, m8?
wonder what the discussed topic range is
from the name it seems to be a standup comedian / youtuber comedy channel / comedy sketch discussion place
@user1306322 pillow fights, obvs.
11:55
privacy policy is they collect everything and share with everyone
this seems to be an advertisement account of theirs, one of the posts is 2 days ago about startup crowdfunding, doesn't seem like it's getting any traction or positive responses anywhere
they made the app though so either someone used their own money for this or they somehow got angel investor funding
12:14
@Magisch True. But that app... it almost seems like the concept was born from actual needs of someone who experienced real harassment online ... and then the development was made by the ones who caused the harassment.
I mean, giggle means:
Verb: giggle (third-person singular simple present giggles, present participle giggling, simple past and past participle giggled)
  1. To laugh gently or in a high-pitched voice; to laugh in a silly or giddy way.
  2. The jokes had them giggling like little girls all evening.
Noun: giggle (plural giggles)
  1. A high-pitched, silly laugh.
  2. (informal) Fun; an amusing episode.
  3. We put itching powder down his shirt for giggles.
  4. The women thought it would be quite a giggle to have a strippergram at the bride's hen party.
so, to associate that with a group of girls you have two options:
a) you are thinking that female => girly => unicorns => "high-pitched girly laughter"
JAD
JAD
I'm missing the unicorn link, but go on
b) as someone pointed out already....
in Not a bar, but plays one on TV on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, 1 hour ago, by Andras Deak
@Derpy there's also the similarly unflattering alternative of "gaggle of geese -> giggle of girls"
@JAD I mean this
@BlueSoul mhm
@Magisch Maybe excessive, but the site and the other material gave me the felling that even if there was a real problem that they were attempting to solve... the ones who actually did the job didn't understand the problem.
But that could be just me.
I almost feel like there is an undergoing "irony" that ends up being as offensive as the "nasty stuff" they claim to want to avoid.
(see for example the above comment that kinda suggest the name was either chose because a) girl have to be girly and giggle al the time or b) a group of girls is similar to a group of geese )
12:30
I don't know, but all those TV shows make me believe that women can be completely horrible to other women. I'm sure it is a wonderful girl-and-cat-only platform though.
on the other hand sentient cats sounds like heaven
@Gimby in theory, thanks to the "wonderful" world we live in, some of the ideas offered by that app could make sense. The "female only" carpooling app does make sense in an odd way since there are some countries where females are indeed exposed to risk of abuses when using those services (at least - more than males do)
But the execution has that "not really serious in what we are doing so we will throw in bad jokes now and then" felling that seems out of place
@Magisch there is a love death and robots episode on that 😁
12:51
@BlueSoul a better alternative to these apps could be frequenting certain subreddits where people are generally just nice and moderation has very strict thresholds for inappropriate messages, but there's just one problem which I have never heard anyone explain how it's being fixed on reddit − anyone can direct message you anything or mention your name on any other subreddit, and no moderator is going to filter that for you
or just find a discord group, coz there's privacy and visibility settings there, and you can disable private messages from randos
Hm I've never seen a DM on Reddit, but I'm sure it is possible. It's a pretty sick site to be a part of in any case even if it has safe subreddits. Lots of subreddits have nasty cultures and those cultures constantly risk to blow over to other subreddits as people start to visit more and more of them.
@Gimby Humans can be completely horrible to other humans. Gender is irrelevant here. Men can be horrible to women, women can be horrible to women, women can be horrible to men, men can be horrible to women, and all other genders can also be horrible to all possible gender combinations.
Sadly, no one gender has a monopoly on jerks :(.

@Gimby I don't really see how this is specific to reddit subreddits, versus FB groups or things like that
@user1306322 Facebook "we are tagging your face in every photo we can put our greedy hands on" style?
either way, those "feature" are the very reason I try to stay away from such services.
@JAD it isn't, the only site I have experience with is Reddit.
13:51
@Magisch *raises eyebrow*
imagine a cat
but you can talk to it
@Magisch do you really want to hear what they think? I think not.
I think the common stereotype does not hold and that most cats are affectionate and loving
I've heard of nice cats. But if you want a nice cat don't you really want a dog? ;)
@Magisch Define "loving". My cat is the best friend of all humans, even complete strangers and people wearing clothes that would usually send a dog into terminator mode. Snuggles, purring, head buts, soft meowing, anything that can be considered cute. But other animals... they must die. All of them.
14:06
Can you tell if it's jealousy or some predator thing?
My aunt's cat is a saint
Meet Fedora, the most loving cat you've ever seen
She's currently napping by my side as I'm working
@avazula nice, that's very close to my Xena.
@JAD I knew you were gonna do that :p
14:09
Pfft, amateur!
o_o
@terdon Where's the cat though? :p
Sorry, my bad!
Caught him in a rather inelegant moment.
@AndrasDeak She's a huge predator. I couldn't even let her out in the yard, we had to build an enclosure. And she is prepared to fight to the death with other cats.
But to people... a little princess.
@Gimby Fedora hunts the mice in the yard, brings them home, kills and eats them, and then vomits the whole thing because she's eaten too quickly...
@avazula Yep, it's a cat.
14:16
haha
@Gimby oof
Did I mention she vomits in the house?
my aunt's cat has reached an uneasy alliance with the ravens
@avazula Yep, it's a cat :)
Luckily she has no problems with being on a leash so we can take her out for walks. Which of course... shows you again how terrible people can be because frequently we have to endure people telling us to our face that we're stupid morons. But hey, as long as the cat is happy.
14:23
@AndrasDeak cats can find food or go to other neighbours and ask for food, if a dog goes to neighbours it's getting pounded fast
also cats are not as needy of attention as dogs
and they're all generally the same small size
dog sizes vary greatly and so do their food expenses
@user1306322 you can't generalise that statement, it severely depends on the breed for both cats and dogs.
cat vs dog economics are very different
@user1306322 I would be very afraid for my cat if it went out on the town (if I had a cat)
oh sure personalities can be different but in my experience I've seen too many self-sufficient and jerky cats than attention craving ones, and I've seen a different ratio breakdown of the same traits in dogs
@AndrasDeak we got cats walking around the hood in the city, it's fine
there are many fences and cats are small enough to evaporate behind them if any unleashed dogs decide to chomp on them
and there aren't really any stray unleashed dogs anymore in the city
Cats can be outside just fine sure. But don't expect them to get as old as they are supposed to. It only takes one wound or one car. Average life expectancy of a cat will drop 6-8 years if it is allowed to roam, easily.
14:32
um sorry didn't mean to upset you smokey :D
Dogs are pack animals, cats are not. So sure, there may be some outliers, but there's no question that attention and affection are more important to dogs than to cats on average.
@Gimby Oh come on. That just isn't true. Source: having had dozens of cats all of whom roamed freely.
I've lost way more dogs to cars than cats. In fact, I don't think I've ever lost a cat to a car.
Poison, disease, old age, yes. But not cars, oddly enough.
I think there's been one dog lost to a car on my memory, but never cats
one cat ran away but he was just too dumb so whatev
I noticed countryside animals are usually way smarter than city dwellers
something about larger space and interaction with wildlife is great for developing animal intellect I guess
@terdon that's dozens from one household VS millions worldwide.
@Gimby Yes, but since you don't actually have any sources for the millions, that doesn't seem relevant. You made a very specific claim about cats losing several years life expectancy if you let them out, and I don't believe that at all.
That's fine :)
14:37
I don't think either of us have credible research data behind our anecdotes :p
Its hard to present credible research data when all you have at hand is the interwebs.
Even if you would have it... who the heck is going to read it.
true, true
And to actually draw conclusions you would have to factor in the health benefits of letting cats roam and hunt freely.
But I wouldn't be at all surprised if outdoor cats actually have a higher life expectancy precisely because they will be more active, more stimulated and (possibly) happier.
Whether or not that is balanced out by the chances of being hit by a car isn't easy to know. Especially since those chances will vary enormously depending on where the cats' humans live.
JAD
JAD
this sounds like a question for Pets.SE :)
> The typical outdoor cat lifespan is nowhere near as long. According to the Willamette Humane Society in Oregon, cats who go outside usually live only 3 to 5 years. Outdoor is full of threats to cats, such as rock salts during the winter, and creatures ranging from skunks to coyotes.
JAD
JAD
rock salts?
14:43
OK. Fair. Of course, I have no idea what "rock salts" are and have never lived in a place with either skunks or coyotes. Or any other predator that could possibly attack my cat.
@JAD No clue.
skunks?
JAD
JAD
tbh, I'd consider cars the number one danger for cats near me
@AndrasDeak getting stinked to death?
Me too, but I live near a busy street and cars have already taken the lives of several street cats so I'm biased.
Me too (biased, I mean). I can't imagine having a pet and keeping it locked in a house all of its life. But that's why I don't have pets when I don't have a garden or some easy outdoor space.
Neither can I, so I take it out myself.
JAD
JAD
14:46
eh, I have snakes. Snakes don't care
@JAD Yeah, snakes are like honey badgers.
snakes plural? Snor has siblings?
JAD
JAD
@terdon not really. They just like to sit still in their warm snug hide.
@avazula A ball python as well
To come back to the 6-8 years, I'm not pulling that out of my behind. I have read and seen that several times in articles, books and documentaries and since its always around the same number that comes up I marked it as credible. Especially given the fighting nature of my own cat and from what i've seen a single cat bite can do, its pretty terrible. But I can't back that up, since I don't keep track of that stuff.
14:50
I was referring to that viral video.
Oh. Um. I linked to a part where it's eating a snake. Sorry!
@Gimby I just had a quick look and I also found various places claiming that outdoor cats live less (although the number I keep seeing is 2-3 years, not 6-8!). Note that feral cats will of course have a far lower life expectancy. Could that be where the 6-8 comes from?
Or perhaps these are SE cats?
JAD
JAD
@terdon eh, it's life
@terdon It could be that I'm mixing that up yes, feral cats definitely have a far lower life expectancy than domesticated cats.
JAD
JAD
@avazula I chucked a picture in the discord :)

Both my dog and my cat are amazing :p
at the very least, the voice module is defective. Compare a cat purrr and a dog barking.
Dog purrr module is clearly broken.
@BlueSoul I never said which ones are better

it is always there in the list of available data sources. Wouldn't mind, but the odd thing is that selecting it does no longer prompt for a password.
Not a real problem for me, strictly talking, but that is a customer site and I would therefore like to remove it after I am done with the work they asked for.
hi, @JourneymanGeek. We were just discussing about upgrading you to a cat :P
16:47
so the claim is not completely untrue
if a cat gets it paws on a grain of that.... ooooh shit watch out! better put it into a rehab quick, or else it will develop a nasty habit of oversalting its food and its liver will collapse

Q: Did Stack Exchange cut the number of negative comments nearly in half between the beginning of the fourth quarter of 2019 and January 21, 2020?

Kevin MontroseFranck Dernoncourt asked, over on Skeptics: Did Stack Exchange cut the number of negative comments nearly in half between the beginning of the fourth quarter of 2019 and January 21, 2020? It's not really possible for someone outside the company to answer, and given that - it feels a little ...

I'm so close... someone rolled back one change because I was too casual discussing it, so then I had to set them straight, and lecture them on queue jumping etiquette...
