7:00 AM
The Marsh. Finally. Someone gets it right.

waving a pill in front of @Marshmallow

update on the havanese dog in the office: he ran face first into a glass door today

@Magisch He has brought dishonour to his cow.
Also... poor thing

@ShaWiz Having read the first message in the conversation, are you now satisfied that it's not a "simple moderation request" (or even a request at all)?

@SonictheAnonymousWizHog But an alternative resolution could have been flagging it for mod and explaining why it should be re-protected since it received spam so quickly. I understand you want to be in harmony and full agreement with others on moderation requests, but there's always some subtle things we miss. Now that you're confident you haven't, you should go ahead and correct it. This whole discussion is a bit unnecessary IMO.
Or maybe reprotect it if you have the rep

7:05 AM
@JourneymanGeek he let out two little barks at the door and walked away from the door

A flag requesting protection would be wrong, since it doesn't require a moderator's intervention since I have 15k+ rep. Immediately reprotecting later would be seen as wheel-warring and would also be the incorrect action if there was some other special reason why it should remain unprotected.
In this case, the reason simply happened to be "one of the spam answers was really old". If it was some other reason that required it continue to be unprotected, I would have taken an incorrect action.

@SonictheAnonymousWizHog I'm personally fine with what you do, but..... others are not. My advise for you is "better safe than sorry", i.e. don't ping staff/mods here, even if it's justified.

Is this true?
Sep 3 '18 at 12:22, by Shadow the Welcoming Wizard
And if we can't ping staff here, I will ask this room to be closed.

If you're curious about something general, like "When is it appropriate to protect a question on Meta.SE?", or even something specific, like "Why was this question unprotected?"... those can both be asked as questions. Meta.SE functions as its own meta site; such questions are on-topic here, and then you're not bothering specific people with a ping (and you can get answers from different places).

@SonictheAnonymousWizHog that's if there's be strict policy for everyone "Never ping staff, no matter for what reason", and that's not the case yet.

7:07 AM
@Magisch That's both cute and maybe sad

I've asked questions here for staff, even pinging them, and it's been fine.

@SonictheAnonymousWizHog Not even sure anyone would have noticed.

@Mithrandir Inane questions tend to be negatively received. I once tried posting similar questions that I would have previously asked as chat pings, but many of them were heavily downvoted despite being perfectly on-topic and answerable.

@SonictheAnonymousWizHog so far it's aimed at you because, well, you stretched the rope too thin.

(If this is a restricted conversation, please tell me)

7:08 AM
(the "no ping" "policy")

But I can understand how excessive pings might be an issue.

@forest No, the problem is multiple pings to the point where they can get annoying

@SonictheAnonymousWizHog Then maybe take that as a hint that not everything needs an explanation all the time. Bothering someone in chat to avoid downvotes is not an acceptable solution.

I no longer routinely, on a daily basis ping staff anymore, in case anyone's noticed.
The annoyance mainly took place because I pinged them routinely and daily.

That's what you think, but, you know, maybe there's an element of annoyance because you're pinging them about something that didn't need a ping?
Even if it's not daily, it can still be annoying to be unnecessarily pinged about work stuff in a room where you're not necessarily taking care of work stuff.

7:13 AM
@SonictheAnonymousWizHog You're not in a court, sorry if it feels like that. No one is accusing you of ill-intent

That dog is getting so spoiled at the office

@Magisch that tends to happen
@SonictheAnonymousWizHog Practically? If it was ill intent, you'd probably have gotten a lot more than a long, polite lecture.

And it's also worth mentioning that I've also stopped with that whole "Chaos Emerald" pinging, and if something needs duplicate closure, I just let it go through the review process. So it's not as if I'm not learning to just let existing systems handle things.

I'm working under the assumption that, well, you have no idea that something can be annoying, and need it spelled out and why.
So "People might not always want to get pinged about work" is feedback - and well, I wouldn't bother if I thought you would pick up on it

@SonictheAnonymousWizHog Do you think it'd be possible for you to extrapolate a bit about what you've been told about specific chat pings / requests and apply that generally?

7:22 AM
Yeah, Adam did mention annoyance when I asked him if I could ping him for cross-site spammers...
I used to justify my previous daily pings with "it's their job to respond to pings"...it might be their job, but do they actually feel good about it?

@SonictheAnonymousWizHog I don't think its anyone's job to respond to pings

@JourneymanGeek I used to think that it's their job, but I don't currently do, if that wasn't clear

A developer doesn't necessarily have to respond to pings. That's not their job; their job is to write code.

and the really close relationship we have had historically with SE devs and community team is ... well unique

I was saying, "even if it is their job hypothetically, what do they feel about it?"

7:25 AM
but if folks are actually hanging out here, without thinking "Hey, someone's going to make demands on my time" we actually have a better chance of well... interacting with them

Basically: The Tavern should be a place where people interact, not where staff and users interact.
4

which incidentally means you can talk about a feature, and someone who happens to be here will go "Oh! THAT THING!"

When I was being told about it just now, I felt as if I was spoken to as if I was pinging them on a routine basis. Which I'm not doing anymore.

@SonictheAnonymousWizHog I've not seen Adam in here in ages
So when his first interaction is, well...

@SonictheAnonymousWizHog But something happened that could have been just as annoying.

7:27 AM
He's always been a lurker, and responsive to pings

Probably is. I forgot Adam's response to the nuking requests

(We do need a better way to deal with profile nukage...)

@Marshmallow He'll nuke 'em if he sees 'em, but don't ping him routinely about it.

@JourneymanGeek Maybe just sort the spammer in MS by site and nuke them for 15 minutes everyday, and . . . no wait, not a good idea.

Even back in the Chaos Emerald days I used to only ping users if they had consented to it.

7:29 AM
Plot twist: @Sonic getting hired by SE with one job: be pingable in chat, all over SE, and respond to all requests. :D

@JourneymanGeek Oh no, I don't want my first interaction to be a well. They say a dirty goth girl will come out of the TV after a while. Which is cool and all, but TVs are expensive.

This reminds me, read today that IDF accepts more transgenders these days. :D

I wouldn't mind having someone designated as "chat support", but until that position exists... we shouldn't be acting like it exists.

@ShaWiz Inspirational downforce?

@Marshmallow nope. ynet.co.il/articles/0,7340,L-5564553,00.html sorry no English version. :/

7:32 AM
@JourneymanGeek Thanks for letting me know this instance. I just don't want it to be that whenever I do something wrong, I feel like my previous efforts have gone completely unrecognized.

"It's a population with good data While respecting human dignity "

For instance, I was being spoken to as if I pinged staff routinely and constantly, even when I didn't.
Or that I hadn't learned a single thing and hadn't chanced my behavior a single bit. That's what I felt like.

@SonictheAnonymousWizHog If someone hadn't contributed so much, we wouldn't have spent so long trying to give feedback

@Marshmallow nah our Ferrari is not dangling

7:34 AM
@ShaWiz Dreaded Franchise?
Heh, Transformers is a dreaded franchise

@Marshmallow close, yes

@SonictheAnonymousWizHog You've definitely made improvement. But, sometimes... it feels like it's taking you a year to figure out what should be common sense, and it's going very slowly. That feels like an issue. It took a very long time to get to this point, and I feel like you're having trouble taking both cues from people around you and making logical extrapolations from what you've been explicitly told.
You need everything spelled out and written down and exact, but sometimes things are squishier and more of a judgement call that you need to be able to make. Learn to follow the examples of people around you.

My stopping Chaos Emerald pings was not because I was told to stop, but because I exercised judgment and decided to stop on my own.

I think this discussion is now dragging. Maybe take a break @All

@SonictheAnonymousWizHog that's nice. Kudos. :)
And now time to ping unsuspecting victim!
!!/coffee Fabby

7:41 AM
@ShaWiz brews a cup of Cappuccino for @Fabby

Done.
No Ping Requests can be submitted via Telegram.
:P

@ShaWiz actually....
Ping requests by actual singing telegram...

>:-) Thanks...
Also: I don't drink coffee unless I need to stay up and work all night!
0:-)

I'm exhausted, so I'm drinking coffee...

@Fabby cheers! :D
@JourneymanGeek singing? Nice Telegram you got... ;)

7:51 AM
On a side note, waiting for the bus at the side of the road in the middle of nowhere at a quarter to eleven at night isn't fun...

@ShaWiz we were discussing that as an alternative to email mod messages as a joke ;p

8:02 AM
@Mithrandir 22:45 that would be NZ or Siberia...
>:-) ;-)

Well, its possible they are not waiting for a bus now
or have been waiting a very long time...

That was 12 hours ago, so yeah, not now :P

one bus per week ...

Usually at least two...

2 weeks?

8:06 AM
6-8
I bus around pretty frequently nowadays. Unfortunately, the busses don't have WiFi...
...and I only have 100MB of mobile data per month, which is pretty ridiculous.

Ow
@Mithrandir er. I have a free plan with more data
Though I have a redicuous number of low cost lines...

I'm hoping to upgrade soon. I have to take my phone to get fixed (screen is completely cracked. That was a fun crash), so I might switch out the sim card to one with a different provider and more data while I'm at it.

That's never fun

8:22 AM
I had a Nexus 6P for 3.5 years. It had been dropped dozens of times without cracking, but it did eventually crack. The perfect excuse to get a new phone.
Just a few days prior, the Pixel 3a had just come out, and as a former Nexus 6P owner it was pretty much tailored to my needs

I don't care so much about having a perfect phone. If I can install a few apps and surf the internet, I should be fine. It does need to have a decent battery life, though, because I'm often out for the entire day with no access to chargers.

Yeah, my Nexus 6P's battery did eventually noticeably degrade two years in. I opened it up and put in a new battery.

@Mithrandir IKR, there is a vague feeling of terror to it

@Mithrandir I remember a few years ago I only had 300 MB per month, I found it too little

@SonictheAnonymousWizHog 300? That's a week of browsing SE, tops.

8:27 AM
@Marshmallow I know there was something in the bushes behind me, I kept hearing it rustle around. I almost opened up my pocketknife, but decided against it.

OK OK you don't need to be a Tolkien about it.
It's more of wondering and not wondering at the same time whether the bus will ever arrive

If it hadn't, it would've been an hour+ bike ride down a single-lane winding blind highway with no lights. Luckily, it came ;)
But yeah, I was tracking the bus on my phone so I was relatively certain it was coming

I think at the moment I have... 20gb (was 40, but I saved 20 quid by turning off the unlimited option) for ~20 dollars (10 dollars off a year for switching), 1gb (at 8 dollars a month than it trottles) 1gb (free) and 2gb a day (1 year trial)
._.

@JourneymanGeek I think the card that I'm planning on switching to has a hundred GB or something like that, which is quite a drastic jump :P

8:33 AM
@JourneymanGeek I'm having a feeling you're having a feeling you're the guy who tries to snatch some coins from the vending machine.

@Marshmallow or clips coupons

Why not both.

But I wouldn't say no to extra spare change
@Marshmallow my work is 1. Boring 2. away from anything interesting 3. has no internet

Oh that's some form of torture
If you're wondering, I'm doing what resembles 'work', and I have internet here.

more amusingly
I need internet for work
and the work internet connection is shitty enough that we don't really have much use for it

8:40 AM
Today my internet service provider, has been caught in flame . They notify the customer 'To get back in service, it's take 15 days'. :(

......
I don't think I can beat that

:(

@Shree they pretty much need to replace everything I would guess
and probably fix up their backbone

Morning...
Did I miss anything?

@Shree . . . How are you chatting then? o.O

8:46 AM
@MetaAndrewT. Lots of scrolling :)
Morning!

Morning times two

@Marshmallow telegram

@Marshmallow showoff :P

someone runs over every line, and they type it out

Morse code? Dance talk?

8:48 AM
@Marshmallow At the moment I am in office so we have alternative provider. After office there is no option to connect.

Kumbaya My Lord.
@Shree That sounds damning
But I'm pretty sure when no one took internet seriously here (and the old farts in charge still don't) things were worse
They're still far from objectively good

@Marshmallow I also have my mobile connections across 3 different ISPs.... ;p

But I make do with what I got

@JourneymanGeek you combine it into 1 big ISP?

@MetaAndrewT. In theooorrryyyyy
Its probably possible to do a multi homed setup...

8:51 AM
ISP A + ISP B = 20 Mbps + 20 Mbps = 40 Mbps!

pretty much

Question: Is what they claim as excuse for the internet being slow here, that phone lines can't really carry much Mbps, legit?

9:09 AM
If they still use copper, twisted-pair and analogue modems, yes.

the electrons are lazy, and its hard to find whips small enough
or there's not enough photons, and the photon refill is on backorder
yanno? I am watching ST Discovery season 2...

9:29 AM
@JourneymanGeek I once read you need to send enough 0 down the wire to smooth out the damage caused by the rough edges of the 1 ...

hm, that's fun

1 hour later…
10:33 AM
@MetaAndrewT. just @Shree's ISP burning
hmm.... think that user had other off topic question(s) on MSE. Journey, Tink, if you see this, feel free to explore and handle. ;)

@ShaWiz that seems correct

10:49 AM
glaring at suspend button
;)
I wonder if anyone who got themselves suspended for posting off topic questions on MSE ever got back and posted yet another off topic question after that.

let's see ...

How? SEDE got suspensions table??

Off the top of my head? No
@ShaWiz fun fact. There is no suspend button on main sites
You can't suspend someone without a mod message

ohh
So... useful.
:D
So the suspend option exists only as part of mod message?

11:08 AM
eh, its a fairly well known thing that you always get a mod message with a suspension.

11:24 AM
I supend you because you are

I suspend, therefore I am.

@Feeds There are some suspiciously dark squirrels around here, could be one of them. When you see a squirrel moving around at 200-400 km/s, that is probably the one.

Wait, what? Now I'm afraid...

> Now that everything is online, shifting the cost of a vendor’s mistake to the vendor’s support infrastructure has become a viable alternative to patching the operating system to work around a single program.

1:46 PM
So... braintrust (and someone will ask on meta I suppose) - when a site gets renamed, does it get renamed on SEDE too?

No

thought so

Yup, just checked to confirm. Community Building is still listed as Moderators

cheers

2:42 PM
@JourneymanGeek there are a couple of fields in the internal sites table one of which is Databasename and it is preferred to keep that stable but the other fields there like TinyName, name and Longname can be updated, specially Longname. name is used if you use a sitename in the url. It breaks when you put special characters in it meta.stackexchange.com/q/296521
also this stalled discussion might be relevant: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/293127/…

@JourneymanGeek Hi, and should merge — they're about the exact same thing.

@Stormblessed post on meta plix
@Stormblessed post on meta plz

@JourneymanGeek on SFF people always downvote re-tagging posts to hell
But ok

@Stormblessed a few things. 1. I am about to go to bed
2. This is kinda something that needs to be discussed.
3. Chat is not meta
Mostly 1

mods are asleep post sinks

oh wow I posted a feature-request and the first vote was an upvote
Also how on Earth have I posted 56 Meta questions in only 5 months :P

@Stormblessed There have been complaints on the site regarding retagging decisions made in chat

Q: Why are tags on MSE being regularly removed/deprecated without discussion?

Josh CaswellFor a while now, on a daily basis, the front page of Meta.SE has been populated with old questions bumped because of retaggings -- mostly removals. Today ignore seems to be the target. As far as I know, burnination of tags should be well-motivated and accompanied by a Meta proposal to make sure ...

@SonictheAnonymousWizHog well this one just seems so obvious and Mods are the people with the power to merge tags

My NAA flag for meta.stackexchange.com/a/109720/384528 was declined. Is that really an answer?

@Stormblessed drop a link here once you posted the request

3:03 PM
It doesn't even try to answer the question. It's just... a bad joke.

I do warn tag merges scare me even with the new UI so even if we do it, it could take a little while

Q: The tags [about-page] and [stackexchange-tour] should merge

StormblessedThe tags about-page and stackexchange-tour mean exactly the same thing: The about page tag's description: For questions relating to the Stack Exchange 'About' page, now also referred to as the 'tour' for new users. The Stack Exchange tour tag's description: The Stack Exchange tour cont...

Right. Goodnight folks

Good night

@forest Seems like it got two Looks OK votes and four Recommend Deletion votes before the flags were cleared out by a moderator (invalidating the review task)

3:06 PM
@SonictheAnonymousWizHog Yup. I'm posting a Meta question about it right now.
0
Q: Does Meta have a different standard for NAA?

forestThere is an answer here which does not attempt answer a question and instead posts a joke in response to a whimsical bounty message. Several people flagged it as NAA and it quickly accumulated many Recommend Deletion flags in review, but the flags were declined. Is there a different standard for ...

Ah I love the random, instant downvotes every question I post gets. :P

3:23 PM
@SonictheAnonymousWizHog Last I checked, two Looks OK is what it takes to complete the review.

@fbueckert It's one plus the number of active NAA flags. Since both forest and I flagged as NAA, at least three would be required.

Someone else in the comments mentioned that they also flagged it.

A completed review would show as "review completed". But this one shows as "this item is no longer reviewable".

A mod manually declined the flags, it seems. At least according to the decline message.

@SonictheAnonymousWizHog Where does it say that?

3:25 PM
Yes, that's what happens. A review outcome of Looks OK would lead to a disputed flag outcome.

In the comments to my question, it seems the reasoning is that it would cause too much rep loss for the person who posted it.

Every instance I've run into, two is all it takes.

Code should be consistent

Code should be self-descriptive

Code should be well documented

Code should utilize stable modern features

Code shouldn’t be unnecessarily complex

Code shouldn’t be un-performant (don’t write intentionally slow code)

Density of available online resources (StackOverflow density)

Development Velocity (vroom vroom)

Bug proneness (eeek)

Quality and breadth of package ecosystem (yea npm, it says quality)

Performance characteristics (more dots)

Hirability (sorry COBOL)

that's a list

Why’s all this showing on a question unrelated to those tags without me clicking on the tag entry box? I’m using the mobile site

i'd assume something to do with the tag wiki

But I need the rep @forest ...

So do I and it pains me greatly to lose that 2 rep from accepting an answer, but I just don't want to risk an official answer being passed by because there's already a little green checkmark.
If you add a list of 30 totally unrelated dark jokes to the answer, I'll accept it though. :^)
That's pretty subtle for spam.
Oh my god the link in that answer is so bizarre.

-1 What are these “aspects that it answered a question”? There is no attempt to answer an on-topic question in this answer.Stormblessed 4 mins ago

@forest lol

Is it within Be Nice to say “-1” in a comment? I was just thinking I might have been not nice

it's not useful
but there's no real policy against it
there is some code that blocks it from being posted if the comment is shorter than a certain number of characters, but that's just to prevent the most useless usage of such comments

It can be fine if you include other information.
"I downvoted because [reason]" can be simplified to "-1 [reason]".
But just something like "-1 bad answer" is not acceptable.

@Stormblessed it depends on how you want to be perceived by others. I personally take more offense with the bolding of sentences. I might look blurred but there is nothing wrong with my eyesight, just saying.

4:06 PM
(I personally use bolding to highlight relevant information)

I personally hate you for that ....

But why??

Can't I look like a 2002 MySpace page in everything I say???/
Just with less sparkles.
ohshi something came up. bbiab

It is probably for the same reason I hate one-boxes of post links in the middle of a discussion.

A: Does Meta have a different standard for NAA?

Monica CellioHumor and silliness are more welcome on meta than main, but posts that don't even attempt to answer the question aren't answers. This one is blatant; it ignores the question and responds to the unrelated text of a now-ended bounty. That answer is not making the sure even a little better. Because...

@rene what do you mean

5:38 PM
@forest look at the user’s unintelligible profile

8:44 PM
Hmm. I wonder if someone got suspended for a comment-flagging spree.

2 hours later…
10:19 PM
@SonictheAnonymousWizHog I flagged it as well, so it would have taken four looks OKs

@pppery Provided no one else flagged it, yes.
Also, it's worth mentioning that while a Recommend Deletion review outcome would have led to the flag being marked helpful, it wouldn't have deleted the answer: if the answer is positively-scored, it raises an automatic moderator flag instead of deleting it.

Sidenote: what triggered so much attention on that post all of a sudden?

10:44 PM
Eh
It's worth remembering MSO pre split was a funnier and more light-hearted place.. Sometimes it's worth considering if we want to burn our embarrassing baby pics
