@Monica your comment is basically the same as Sonic’s, shouldn’t it just be the last part rather than all the things they already said so as not to be confusingly redundant? — Stormblessed 15 secs ago
Welcome to Meta Stack Exchange! This site is for discussions, bug reports, and feature requests about the Stack Exchange network of Q&A sites; unfortunately, we have to mark this question as "off-topic" for this site. Please post your question on the correct site, and be sure to read that site's help guidelines to make sure your question is on-topic for that site. — Sonic the Anonymous WizHog 14 mins ago
Welcome to Meta! You've asked this question on Meta, the site for questions about Stack Exchange itself. To get an answer from users that have the expertise about the topic of your question you'll have to find and then re-post on the proper site. Check How do I ask a good question and What is on topic on the target site to make sure your post is in good shape. As it stands, I don't think this would be on-topic anywhere on the network because it's very subjective, unfortunately. — Monica Cellio ♦ 10 mins ago
Shouldn’t we avoid posting multiple really similar generic blatantly-off-topic comments?

I don't particularly find that much of a problem with it, provided they are phrased differently.

@SonictheAnonymousWizHog that still shows Beta on mobile chat @Catija
Oh it’s also showing beta on desktop

@Stormblessed Probably CDN caching
The logo is loaded from a CDN

@SonictheAnonymousWizHog it’s not showing beta on your computer, you said?

@Stormblessed It's not.
Here in the southeastern U.S., the local CDN server has updated recently.

12:48 AM
@SonictheAnonymousWizHog oh that’s weird!
Is it just the same except for not having “Beta” in it?

@JourneymanGeek one time I posted a short, non-automatic-type comment and that user with the Greek letters in their name got annoyed
But I don’t know how to use userscripts?
How do you use them

well you need an extension to run them
tampermonkey.net is a good one
then you find userscripts, say
though for comments, I use github.com/Benjol/SE-AutoReviewComments
I still try to write comments the old fashioned way
but I rather compromise and let a script do it with OT question comments here

Morning .
Cloudy Morning .

Hey everyone.
So I'd like to bring up a question I posted on the Math Overflow meta site.
0
Q: Should these sexually suggestive jokes be kept or deleted?

Tanner SwettThere are a few jokes in "Do good math jokes exist?" that I think are inappropriate. Specifically: Nov 21 '09 at 9:01 item (1) Oct 19 '09 at 16:03 Dec 10 '09 at 23:14 Dec 15 '09 at 1:31 All of these are jokes about people's bodies (mostly women's bodies) with sexual implications. In short, t...

The score has been bouncing around a bit. It was at -2 at one point, then later it was at 2, and now it's back down to 0. There seems to be significant support both for deleting the jokes and for keeping them.
Anyway, posting the question made me realize something.
I think the jokes in question are harmful, but I don't quite understand how or why they're harmful.

It seems pretty obvious to me that, on a site for serious discussion about mathematics, it's not appropriate to make jokes about strippers, mini-skirts, and rear ends.
But I wasn't able to come up with a good explanation of why that's inappropriate, or to point to any kind of reliable source saying so.

Rob
I think you summed it up pretty well:
> All of these are jokes about people's bodies (mostly women's bodies) with sexual implications. In short, this is website is a professional environment, and these jokes are inappropriate for a professional environment

There seems to be a bit of pushback, though.

4:19 AM
Question of a day .
I asked a question on meta(SO) under [tag:discussion] and got few up-votes but my profile show 0 [tag:discussion] x 4 . What I am missing :(

@TannerSwett Well, technically a historical lock is supposed to solve the difference between whether a post should be kept or deleted...but that has more to do with whether the question is on-topic for the site or not.

Rob
@TannerSwett There always will be. People don't like being told something is inappropriate
Yeah, the jokes aren't super offensive. But they're definitely not professional, and not a joke I'd tell at work, for example

There is historical precedent for removing answers like these from a similar (also historically-locked) post on Stack Overflow.

One of the comments says that "unless someone wants to point at a specific reason why a group of people is to be offended by [three of the four jokes in question], I'd consider this fine."
I guess at least a couple of people on MO seem to think that some of these jokes are completely harmless. I'd like to make the point that no, they're not completely harmless.

Rob
What about the group of people who want to keep things professional and not read/make sexually suggestive jokes?

4:22 AM
Number 4, while taking into account multiple people of multiple genders/sexualities, completely overlooks the ace people.
i.e. the people for which there is no "appropriate gender"

I'd like to discuss the second one in particular; should I post the joke here for the sake of discussion or is it better if I don't?

Rob
Not sure of the rules here. But I suppose just linking to the answer would be fine, rather than pasting it here

That's a good idea.
The "second joke" is: mathoverflow.net/a/1229/5736
Now, if you take that one literally, it's merely pointing out that certain anatomical regions may be considered "interesting," and others may be considered "essential."
So what am I supposed to say in response if someone says, "I don't see anything offensive or harmful about that"?

Rob
People are social, not robots. And note the comments under that answer, you're not alone in thinking it's inappropriate

I guess this reminds me of catcalling. I'd have difficulty explaining why catcalling is harmful, too.

4:35 AM
@SonictheAnonymousWizHog gone
@TannerSwett math overflow, as I recall, has its own governance ._.
so practically speaking - its literally something between the company and MO to deal with

@Shree the tag score only counts non-CW answers...

I mean they are terrible - and not in the "let me share that with someone so I don't have to suffer alone", but practically we can't really do much about it.

@JourneymanGeek The jokes are terrible, you mean?

@TannerSwett the wrong kinda terrible
On the second "joke" someone does a great job of saying why they're harmful

@MetaAndrewT. Ahhhh. Thanks . Not question only with answer. I miss that point.

4:43 AM
@JourneymanGeek Now I understand what you're saying.
@JourneymanGeek Does your diamond show up when you post on Meta.MO?

@TannerSwett No, he's only a mod on Meta.SE and Super User, so it won't show up on MO or Meta.MO.

5:13 AM
@TannerSwett I'm not an employee
If I were, I'd still need to be a CM
and MO's kind of a unique case - they're almost an early proto-enterprise customer of sorts
I'm just a regular community member who happens to moderate MSE cause someone asked me nicely ;p

@Glorfindel Oof! I'm tempted to upvote you once now too, just to see if you get the rep from that once the rest is reversed ;)

@Tinkeringbell I just got another non-serial upvote on an answer, I'll let you know what happens tomorrow.

Cool, thanks :)

I expect that once the serial votes have been reversed, the other ones will start to count. It's mentioned that way in the FAQ.

Ah. I didn't think of going through the FAQ for that ;) It's still too early ;)

Hi. I’ve edited a question that was close voted as “too broad”, this one: https://stackoverflow.com/q/57323981/126995
Do you think it’s OK now? If no, how can I improve it? If yes could you please nominate it for reopening?
If this is irrelevant because it’s the wrong chat, what’s the correct one?
Thanks in advance!

@Soonts socvr is a better place but do read our FAQ first: socvr.org/faq

meh

@Soonts why is that question tagged c# and c++? It doesn't have code. It is still rather broad. Maybe then winapi tag is better there but I doubt if Hans Passant comes by that he will answer that question.

Watching this endless list of new comments starts to worry me...
it worries me to the extent of making me searching for this post...

6:21 PM
Yes, we need a lot of meta posts to keep meta at bay

@rene Probably because OP knows both and wants a solution in whatever language?
I can add WinAPI tag but I’m not 100% sure they fit, the tag wiki says “the core set of application programming interfaces”, I think dxgi, desktop duplication, and especially magnification API are rather exotic interfaces, not core ones.

6:33 PM
@Soonts I'm afraid that makes it too broad. As I have mentioned it before, brainstorming question is not really good for a strict format of Q&A. If only the OP has decided to use a specific language and to do a specific task, then it might be okay. Even the "capture then show" could be break into 2 questions, one specific for "capture", and another for "show". It's better to post multiple specific questions instead of 1 broad question.
That said, while this chat room is not really wrong (this is a general chat room on Meta Stack Exchange, not Stack Overflow), you might get better response on Chat.SO, particularly on SOCVR or specific language rooms like C# (be careful with Lounge<C++> though)
@404 welcome back :O

404
@Feeds Got one: The Yellow Birds is at 45%.
Seriously underappreciated film.

@MetaAndrewT. “Even the "capture then show" could be break into 2 questions, one specific for "capture", and another for "show” but it can’t. User only has a single monitor. “capture then show” solution will turn the screen into garbage in a matter of milliseconds, because you’ll capture what’s shown.

@Soonts sorry, I should preface with "I don't have much expertise with C-family language", and that's only my general opinion. That's why I suggest to discuss with those who are more expert than me on their respective chat room :)

That thing is language agnostic. If you capture a display, apply filter, then show on the same display, next frame you’ll capture what you just shown, not the desktop content windows wants to show. On the second frame, you’ll apply the video filter twice to the original image, instead of getting a new video frame from the OS and applying the filter to that one.
As you see, breaking into 2 questions doesn’t work, it has to be a single one.

6:50 PM
@Soonts alright, breaking into 2 questions won't work. But I'm not sure with the "language agnostic", why it's tagged with C# and C++? If I'm using Java, can I use the solution from that post?

@MetaAndrewT. My first solution requires C++. My second simple one can probably be used from C#, see there blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/dwayneneed/2008/09/08/… but I would recommend C++, too. The other answer can be used from any language with C interop. I don’t know Java, can it do C interop i.e. [DllImport]?

@Soonts there is something call JNI (Java Native Interface) IIRC but I'm not sure if it can be used for that use case
@MetaAndrewT. I should have issued better warnings upfront. SOCVR doesn't permit requests on posts you have a stake in. Having an answer on it, basically rules SOCVR out.

7:08 PM
@rene sorry, my bad for not reading the FAQ.

Yeah, blame me for not keeping that thing short, to the point and organized
It grew organically out of control

@rene Not sure either, I don’t program Java. That’s why I don’t know an answer to Andrew’s question. But that solution will definitely work from C#, C or D.

Sorry, while I did encourage you to try salvaging it if possible, I'm not sure I'm the right person to ask for opinion. I noticed you also got some input on SOCVR, but let's just say that not all questions are acceptable on SO or any SE sites...

@MetaAndrewT. Any ideas why exactly this particular question is not acceptable? Especially after the latest edits?
It’s a well defined problem now. It has 3 solutions in the answers. It’s not opinion based because no one on the chats was able to propose another possible answer.

7:29 PM
The part "how do I get the desktop image produced by Windows, apply my effects, and present the result on the same display." still feels too broad for me, but you said otherwise, so I have to agree to disagree, but I can't give any more feedback. Please consult with other users on Chat.SO, ideally to those who know a lot about desktop programming in particular...
That's why, I'd think if the first part "get the desktop image produced by Windows" is asked as an individual question, it's less broad than the current.
But that's assuming if it's possible to break it down into smaller tasks.
I give up...

7:44 PM
> ideally to those who know a lot about desktop programming in particular

I assumed moderators are representative, clicked on the 26 profiles, found a single one who knows anything about Windows desktop development.
Thanks for trying to help, I appreciate it.

But I’m afraid I have to conclude SO community is fundamentally broken in some ways.

Unless fixed, this will cause people like me who’re happy to help to leave the web site (I’m a moderator BTW, wrote 500+ answers over the course of 10 years). What’s the point of answering questions if the questions will be closevoted and auto-delet

moderators aren't topic experts. they aren't meant to be.
some just happen to be
but they weren't elected because they are

FYI, "moderator" is a specific term for "elected moderator". We're just "regular users" (or "power users" if you want). And elected moderators don't have anything to do with answering many questions (the minimum rep to nominate is 3000 rep which is the close vote privilege). Also, be careful with the accusation on the last sentence.

I’ve clicked “moderator attention” and kindly asked to reopen the question. We’ll see what will happen next.

But I think the most probable sequence of events, the question will be read by another web developer (just like the 5 who closed the question), didn’t understood what’s asked there (the question is very domain specific; I’m afraid even after my edits it does look like garbage for people unfamiliar with low-level Windows graphics), and it will stay closed.

If the question would be about web development, neither of this would happen.

probably a declined flag

Last option, if you really want, is to ask a question on MSO (not MSE) with tag to genuinely ask if the question is "too broad" and how, if possible, to salvage it (throw away any emotion out of the post). You can also post your answer at the same time to defend the question and see how the community responds.

8:01 PM
looking at how the exchange in SOCVR went that needs a true genuinely asked question then. Meta is somewhat tougher then SOCVR ....

SOCVR is a toxic wasteland :D

asking about specific questions on meta is harder then it's ever been

Without you in there rene, it would consume itself

whole place is a powder keg looking for a match

Yeah, then that's a lost cause and we should just move on. Perhaps starting a personal programming blog is also a viable alternative...

8:02 PM
also, rene has a mellowing effect on everything

meta is toxic AF right now because it is mainly SOCVR regulars that participate

idk, I don't think socvr is the problem

of course not, you're biased :D

the room just makes you curt and terse from being there, comes with the environment

meh, it also seems to imply that it is sponsored by SO by placing Stack Overflow directly in the name

8:05 PM
nah

But who cares, when you have a large involved group that is trained to coordinate activities, they can show up anywhere and outnumber you. Right? #mso

I have a room thats called meta stack overflow comment archive, thats not sponsored by SO either
it's just a descriptor
"trained" is a bit far
everything on here is less directed and more cat herding
except the cats have flamethrowers

not buying it, thanks for the attempt

not even in the more organized projects like charcoal or sobotics

Is Makoto on SOCVR? Because currently it's Makoto vs the world.

8:07 PM
charcoal is aimed primarily at spam and offensive stuff, it does a really nice job
Makoto found the tone that garners upvotes and pandered to it

you seem angry and cynical

Why? Because I am offering criticism? Sorry I am not a sheep

is it so hard to believe that a situation in which everybody is acting in good faith can lead to this kind of friction due to ideological and interest differences?

@Soonts - I agree with your general outlook. I wish we had more appreciation of the bigger picture like that.

there ain't no man behind a curtain

8:08 PM
@TravisJ we're still closing questions long after SO has become defunct. That CVQ needs to be empty!

lol

@Magisch - "Good faith". I would call it misplaced.

And at this point, I'd say that SO is done. No one agrees with each other. Thanks.

@MetaAndrewT. he is not

I like to think I can spot actual bad faith actors from 10 miles away
and I dont see none here
There are so few of them. If you go deep enough, almost everybody thinks they're doing the right thing...

8:10 PM
Sure, lol
no "bad faith"
what a riot

Yeah, sorry for being "meta police". I shouldn't participate on meta anymore.

The type of attitude which can instantly determine that someone is acting in bad faith but can not handle a split second of criticism is the type that leads to extremely toxic environments.

Its a lot like in the real world. Nobody's the bad guy in their own story

To see that play out across dozens of like minded individuals all coordinated from chat or slack is just draining af
It is not like the real world at all
In the real world, you get these types of people in smaller percents. On the internet, they collect much easier from larger populations.

So why is that? Like minded people congregate in chat, and then their attention is drawn to something
If I gather all of the world's orange tabby cat enthusiasts into my apartment and then a cat hater comes in one way or another they won't get a fair word in :P
It's absurdly easy to form an interest group around almost anything on the 'web

8:14 PM
That isn't the case though.
The situation is more akin to you gathering them in your apartment, and then posting a list of all the cat hating places in the area, and telling them "you know what to do"

So you open up a chat room for people that like helping out by closing stuff. What kind of person is going to stick around in that?

Clearly you are biased.

in what way?
I haven't been active in that room for like 2 years
I haven't seriously reviewed close votes in just about as long
these days most stuff I actually do is obscure serial voting crap that isn't public anyways

You defend it because you agree it is a good idea to coordinate activity in that fashion.

correct
I'm a big fan of coordinated curation
I like charcoal, I'm a fan of sobotics

8:17 PM
It is a failure.
It is the main cause of friction today in the site.

I think socvr serves an important purpose, but I can't muster the energy to participate
the friction is because it's a workaround to a systemic problem

"Coordinated curation" is a nice phrase to use, but it just creates a toxic environment.

i very much dislike it

wouldn't be necessary if not for a decade of neglecting content moderation

A workaround? Yeah, it bypasses convention in the name of being zealous
A decade of neglect? Bull.

8:18 PM
say if the software didn't let 10k questions per day in of which maybe half tops are on topic or useful in any way

Just because moderation wasn't based on how many mindless reviews you did back then doesn't mean there was neglect.

I think the main point where you and I disagree is that I think there should be drastically fewer open questions

@TravisJ I'll be direct, do you have any proposal?

the signal:noise ratio is the single most important thing for a place like SO to work imo

Aside from some vacation, I spent the past several weeks just trying to answer questions in the newest list. <1m, no "curation", no screening. I don't buy into the fact that there is some sort of pandemic problem that requires such a posse of users

8:20 PM
The reason I'm not answering really anymore is because I can spend an hour reading questions and between duplicates, norepros and crap I find maybe one question I can answer

And if you are going to tell me that the exchange is at risk from a question 10 years old with 100 views then you clearly do not understand the internet

Well, looks like we don't know anymore what is the goal of SO.

The signal to noise ratio from search is all that matters
And there is very little noise.

you kidding?

No, are you kidding?!

8:21 PM
I can open a tag newest page right now and chances are there isnt a single novel and interesting q on there

There is a reason why Stack Overflow is the #1 go to place to solve problems in software development

in fact, I could probably spend the next 2 hours looking and not find one

Mostly because you can search for your problem, and it has a viable solution

yes, because it's 20m or so posts deep

This has nothing to do with answering questions

8:22 PM
i mean... most of those questions are duplicates a thousand times over

Just because you can't have your interest piqued doesn't mean the system doesn't work

a q/a library cant keep up with technology if there aren't people who are interested still answering questions

there will always be people willing to answer if there's a reward involved.

Well, then let's just open SO to any kind of programming questions, including popularity questions and full tutorials. I believe SO will become more popular and welcoming.

By a Raspberry Pi and some sort of new sensor equipment for $30, program it. That is a very large part of new technology use right now. You will always have questions to answer.
That would take like a week. But no, you would never, even though you would spend countless hours telling people their questions are crap.

8:24 PM
mind, SO is scary good at predicting problems a programmer who has to work as a sysadmin will have

The problem is that "curation" doesn't actually create. It just condescends and imposes.

just today I found some obscure problem with a sonicwall appliance from a question on SO about UDP packets, it's so contrived and specific I have no idea how someone else had that problem

We need the tools, but we don't need the mantra of pitchforks and torches.

last I looked at socvr (which is some time ago, I'll admit), there was a no pile on and no discussing users rule in there

Nope, they are very good at hiding it.
Have you seen their private slack?

8:26 PM
I dont use slack
and of all of the private chat rooms I know across the network 100% of them are benign and uninteresting

I find that hard to believe. Impossible really.

you should look at the room owner room here
it's shocking in how benign it is
I know the TL is a snoozefest too

I know that most chat is benign, wouldn't call it uninteresting, and I can point to several instances where it is downright ... Mos Eisley.

if this exists, I haven't seen it or been in one of these rooms

Alright, I'm lost, and it's late here...
💤

8:28 PM
There was a smaller exchange that was gutted because their users went to slack from chat and stopped participating due to the graphic nature of the chat interations.
That is far beside the point though. Chat in itself is a great feature.
This isn't about chat. It is about coordinated weaponized pedantry, incapable of receiving criticism, and wholly accustomed to a mob mentally of doling it out.

maybe I'm biased towards coordinated moderation because of charcoal
I love charcoal

It works wonders for spam and offensive stuff.

charcoal is actually my favorite thing I have participated in across my time on the network

@TravisJ if I'm one of them, then you might be incorrect. I'm no one on SOCVR and Charcoal. I just have my personal POV of what SO is and I'll follow it unless proven otherwise.
and so all of us.

Who am I to deter you from your holy journey to your personal vision of SO.

8:35 PM
you're another voice in the sea of discourse :p

@TravisJ No one, including your personal vision of SO.

I am not the one abusing the system.

i mean, that's like just your opinion

Coordinated voting should be banned. How many times have you voted to close with 3 or more of the same user?

who decides what is and isn't abusing the system?

8:36 PM
@Magisch Huh?

@Catija I've been told many times how boring it is by people
people I have no reason to distrust
maybe boring is the wrong word
...benign

Before I was hired I was the most chatty person in there but I'd hardly call it a snoozefest.

maybe I'll see for myself someday
@TravisJ would you extend that to flagging?

Keep trying! There's 29 sites that will eventually have elections soon-ish... start earning rep. :P

what is coordinated for you?

8:38 PM
@Magisch To flagging? Probably not.

even when the flag works like a vote?

Well, spam is different. So I would exempt that from all considerations.

me and another person can IP ban a new user permanently in charcoal on our very whims, yet...
we have done that to undeserving people occasionally

@TravisJ Well, first of all, do you acknowledge that the current Close Vote Queue on SO is broken?
(I'm not trying to defend SOCVR because I very rarely use it)

got systems in place to fix that quickly, of course, but still

8:41 PM
There are many issues with systems, but that doesn't mean that they should be abused.

when I view that in your lens of new user experience. Picture this: You post something, and within a minute you watch it go to -6 and suddenly you're ip banned :p
It seems to me that your position of coordinated voting is fungible based on who is the target
not that I'm advocating sympathy for spammers

An edge case.
The vast majority of situations are not what you describe. That doesn't make it fungible, it just shows that, like all serious consequence, it would require review from a Moderator.
You know that this is bad, and not a problem that Stack Overflow main has, when staff members explicitly stop contributing to areas where the users participating in coordination reside.

Did what you advised: https://meta.stackoverflow.com/q/388088/126995
Another web developer came to explain me how it’s too broad.

I think you vastly overestimate the effect socvr has on meta
its what like 10 people, and some of them aren't even on meta
the regrettable situation on meta has other causes

it's certainly not "coordinated"
lol

Slack.
@Soonts - With that question you ran into the issue of a systemic problem. Too broad's interpretation has had some scope creep over the years. At this point it is used to close anything requiring more than a sentence or two of text.
30,000 characters is the max limit for an answer. That allows for quite a bit of broad, and answers were intended to actually solve problems, not provide snippets.

@Soonts it's only been 15 minutes and it's end of weekday, give more time?
@TravisJ then post your answer and defend him?

@MetaAndrewT. And argue with a set of zealots about their vision quest for finding crap? No thank you.
Meta doesn't represent Stack Overflow.
And I am tired of that tight nit crowd all pretending to.

Okay.

If you want to see what an actual in culture looks like, see wikipedia

I stopped going to meta for a month to see if it would improve, but it just seems worse.

Look. If you have an argument against the practice, post it somewhere it can be discussed. Throwing backhanded abuse at people here, whether you think it's true or not, ain't gonna fly.

Not sure what you mean.
It has been discussed, perhaps you missed it?

There are 3 openings for Moderator on the Operations Research site. Operations Research is the application of mathematical (quantitative) techniques to decision making. In OR, a problem is first clearly defined and represented (modeled) as a set of mathematical equations. It is then subjected to rigorous computer analysis to yield a solution (or a better solution) which is tested and re-tested until an optimum solution is found.

@TravisJ Okay, if you have a new argument against it then. Otherwise, your choice is to accept that your opinion is at odds with the community consensus and move on, or to not accept that and participate somewhere else instead. What's not a choice is complaining about it and abusing people for it here.

@TravisJ I would like you to back that up with stats.
I have a query for you here that gives you close voters. I'll try over the weekend to improve on that.

@ArtOfCode What community consensus?

9:04 PM
@TravisJ The one that says co-ordinated voting is okay.

@ArtOfCode CM's and staff seem to feel that their people are being abused, is that the community consensus?
@ArtOfCode Pretty sure that was called fraud.
The community states it is not okay, just that it isn't being done.

@Catija Or more accurately, candidate points. Unlike pro-tem elections, there is no provision for people winning by default

Wait, you think coordinated voting is okay @ArtOfCode?

@TravisJ Semantics. Perhaps I should have said "the one that says SOCVR is okay", then. Either way - the community accepts that SOCVR is there and is generally doing a reasonable job. If you disagree with that, you're welcome to bring that up. I don't really have any strong opinion either way - what I do object to is abusing the people who engage in the practice in here because you don't like it.

They engaged me.
I came here for Soonts.

9:09 PM
@TravisJ Engaged you how?

Asked him to marry them?

It was beautiful.

I'm sure it was... was there a sunset in the background?
Or a beach?

with flowers?

Flowers are always lovely. :D

9:10 PM
All of those things
Hair blowing in the wind

Sounds idyllic!

@TravisJ Take the point. What your opinion is or why you're here really doesn't matter to me. I'm saying whatever it is, please be nice.

@ArtOfCode We should all be nice.
Idyllically.

Yes, yes we should.

The problem is though, that there is a toxic atmosphere present in part of the exchange. Should we also turn a blind eye to it?

9:12 PM
There's a difference between curating content and being toxic.

Of course there is. Often though, being toxic simply wears the "curation" cape.

For example, explaining to someone why their question is too broad and how they can improve it, citing the guidelines expected of questions, vs. telling someone their question is crap.

The difference you cite is that on Main, no one would call it crap. On meta, so many users would call it crap that it would be the accepted upvoted answer.
In Soonts case, that essentially spilled over into Main.
Which is why I came here when I saw him in here... and for the flowers and sunset and all that.

what, because he disagrees with the assessment, we're toxic?

eh, commenting reasons like that has been discouraged since the welcoming, with the intent that the canned reasons are generally better.

I wouldn't appreciate someone calling my question crap. But if someone were to tell me nicely why my question isn't on-topic and pointing me to guidelines, I'd take it significantly better.
@KevinB if someone were to ask about it on meta
I significantly re-edited one of the FAQs on MSO to take this into account:

Q: Before you post your next question

Robert HarveyWelcome to Stack Overflow! You are probably reading this because the community put your question "On-Hold," and referred you to this post. This post explains what happened to your question, and how you can fix it. What does "On Hold" mean? What is that negative number next to my question? Wha...

See, it was all my fault.

Explaining question issues on the site isn't a problem, for the most part. Like 90% of the time it is fine.

Yea, on meta definitely, those questions do frequently get well received, even if the user doesn't necessarily hear what they want to hear.

That isn't what is being addressed though @Sonic.

9:18 PM
It only took me a few hours of systematic efforts to get it reopened.
Not sure if I’ll continue writing answers, but is yes at least I approximately know what to do next time.
Thanks for your help.

Q: Realtime video processing for the complete Windows desktop

BuzbyI want to add dynamic video effects to the complete Windows desktop. I want to be able to turn the screen grey, bevel the edges and add some scan lines to make it look like an old CRT screen, or make the screen glitch, the way they show hacked systems in movies that don't understand tech, etc. ...

you're welcome

@Soonts Don't let a few rogue users prevent you from helping thousands :D At the end of the day, solving problems is what we all came here for.

I'm here for the good soil

Let me nitrate fix that for you

awesome

@rene you're likeable...
👍

I am? wow ...

10:18 PM
@MetaAndrewT. What, are you okay?
@rene Sir, it must be a mistake. We're on it.
Rebooting @MetaAndrewT.
