@AnneDaunted leave the flag. Mods may still need to investigate

user302202
I wouldn't call copy-pasted text that does not engage with the Homebrewing aspect "good information" but what do I know

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ I personally don't consider meta dupes non legitimate. I'm probably the only one though t

@AnneDaunted With a custom flag you can write that the post was vandalized, even if rolled back or repaired that statement remains true (you don't want to have to come back every 10 minutes to determine if someone pulled the rug out from under your flag). It's more difficult when it's not a sensible question or answer, but better than gibberish, and you flag it R/A, then it gets fixed and people wonder what you flagged; declining your efforts. Sometimes you have to step back to "Unclear ..." or
NAA to avoid a "not helpful" ruling, and the subsequent effort to get that reversed.

@NobodyNada looks like the "John: troll is back, that was attacking the religion sites for a while

@Mithrandir joy

@Mithrandir hmm, from that username there were 3 similar posts 5 months ago and a ton of different, abusive. posts 10 months ago. However, this sort of post is not at all out of the ordinary for that site.

Rob
There are half a dozen John users. We had a discussion over at CHQ that going by short common names leads to errors and one needs to consider the other filters. In that case both filters are fp and the question squeezes through - unless someone can see that the user is IP Banned.

@Rob Well, while I did give the question a tp feedback, I didn't red-flag it; I just gave it a custom flag.

Rob
1:47 AM
@SonictheWizardWerehog I am in favor of you having your own opinion and flagging however you choose. The risk to you is that someone other than me may not agree and will reject your flag, this will remain on your record. --- Without being too specific about allowed questions on that site visit that link and you don't need to go a dozen questions down the list to find questions that seem controversial, yet the site allows them.

@Rob My flag doesn't assert wrongdoing; I just said, "this post was caught as potentially being from a troll, please investigate".
I find it likely my flag will be marked helpful since it was made in good faith, and the moderator guidance says not to decline good-faith flags. But even if it does get declined, a single declined flag is not a huge issue.

Rob
2:10 AM
I can only comment on what you wrote: "... I did give the question a tp feedback ..." and what one would expect that to mean. I'll have time to investigate in the next several hours, as I'm on vacation ATM and only popped in to check on things requiring my attention.

The question is on the conflicting flags list - you need permission to access that page. One is likely to be found correct and the opposite flag is likely to be found incorrect. You can tap on the 'MS' link to see the single MetaSmoke entry that the list leads to, that won't require permission.

Mistyped the comment on PC GarageBand spam; meant "the site has been spammed", not "the (particular) user has spammed that site"

@JourneymanGeek If you wouldn't mind re-setting the username of this user back to the default userXXX code, that would be nice. That username keeps causing SmokeDetector to false-positively report this post due to a naming collision with an unrelated troll. It's a long-gone unregistered user, so I think there should be no problem.

Eh. Dosen't feel like a good enough reason.

@JourneymanGeek Why not?

We try very hard not to mess with profiles unless there's a clear reason to

@JourneymanGeek Is "it creates extra work for Charcoal users" not a clear reason?

5:34 AM
In my opinion change regex not user name if needed for false post.

@JourneymanGeek How about "it's potential impersonation"?

Charcoal dosen't set policy

@JourneymanGeek But "impersonation" is Charcoal-agnostic

Is there any reasonable risk the user would get confused with POTUS?
I don't really think so

You're right; this is more of an issue with Smokey; it shouldn't keep re-reporting the same post unless it was edited.

5:36 AM
Using that reason feels against the spirit of the rules

Besides, it's a cookie-based account; chances are the cookie is gone

shrug sometimes no actually means no.

5:50 AM
In situations like this - I'd also prefer not to mix up my SU moderation duties with the MSE one, might be a better idea to use the ask a super user moderator chatroom. If charcoal's devs want to make a request we have that and other channels

@SonictheWizardWerehog cc @JourneymanGeek Smokey has built in methods for dealing with that. Mod tools should not be used to do the job for it.
And actually, with that name, I don't object to keeping an eye on that user

@Tinkeringbell Seems watches delivery has started.

Yep. Mine is being sent to me by .

Looking at the company addresses it seems the watches were made by a company called Printex

Yeah, I think that dot is being taken from the second address line? Reads funny though.
. is sending you a package

Now.... I would love to make a joke, but I am somehow worried someone could make a real twitter post from it.

As far as I can see though, they just printed the packaging labels, nothing is actually sent yet

9:50 AM
I know.
I was just browsing the Printex site and noticed something funny about the watches. Not really sure I should share the joke, someone could attempt to make it serious.

In cases like that, it's better to not say anything at all :)

@Derpy I thought it was clear since the beginning about the company?

@Bookends ? where? JNat only posted a picture of a watch. Did I miss some comment somewhere?

or maybe not... sorry, just a passing comment then
Aug 13 '18 at 9:40, by Optimus Prime
The swag is shipped by Printex. They gave DHL their mobile number instead of my mobile number.

Anyway, what is weird is that on Printex site I couldn't find any watch that matches the picture JNat originally posted
So maybe they went for a different model in the end

9:58 AM
Perhaps not the maker... but the sender?
Feb 10 at 16:04, by Shadow Wizard
Printex, Inc is the company. :)
also sent Cheese Board

maker and sender >_<

exactly - they do sell a cheese board that matches the one that was sent
but none of the watches match

Q: Considering age factors for suspension duration

Temp MailI think we should consider age as indicated by user's behavior (not influenced by their claims) with some more interest. I've seen a recent increase in kids (clearly in middle school) getting hit with year-long suspensions (multiple suspensions of that duration, in some cases), both network-wide...

welcome to the club

@Derpy Good thing you quoted that sentence, I almost missed refuting that part in my answer ;)

@Tinkeringbell is "appealing" a worth suggestion?

@Bookends Hmmm? You're saying that younger users could appeal a one year suspension if they are suddenly feeling all grown up?

Appealing in general, regardless of age. But maybe moot point

"appealing" is always an option. You are encouraged to reply to the mod message to work something out with the mod team, or contact staff. Most users just use that reply to insult the mod team, though.

10:32 AM
(still busy banning tritone chord on my Roman Catholic country...)

Appealing is for when you have evidence that a suspension was issued that was unjust... I'd say we can keep it out of this discussion, because I am basically saying that age isn't evidence a one year suspension is unjust.

I do know of cases where, after constructive discussion in the mod message replies, the suspension was repealed, but... that's quite rare.

@Tinkeringbell or it's a longer suspension and the user really is contrite

@JourneymanGeek I dunno? If you are contrite you probably know you deserved the suspension, so why not wait it out?

Anyone else seeing odd things with the chat link?

10:48 AM
chat link?
Oh that.
It seems to jump from 'Visit chat' to '9 people chatting' for me.

@Tinkeringbell you are really boring. It is so easy done
just have anyone pretending to be under 14 answer an 1hour long questionnaire about MLP
think many would gladly live with the 1year suspension that have to watch the show to be able to reply.
Right @ShadowWizard?

11:13 AM
@Tinkeringbell it's happened. Thought on longer suspensions

been browsing Gameloft forums.
seems the old ads problem I mentioned a few weeks ago isn't anything new for them.
example, taken from the forum

... and this is even better.

@Derpy Ugh, those
Lamest ads in the history of ads
Also some ads make Gameloft games crash but they don't seem to care much about it

NigelI see how this can look a bit dark but I don't know how to frame my question otherwise. Heh. I actually thought about what those people feel when they're disappearing because indeed, they don't look like in pain

@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ lamest one I saw on the tablet of a relative (in a game he installed for his daughter) was just a message "Error: unable to activate the subscription"
I am still speechless about that one.
It almost seemed the ads actually tried to automatically subscribe to a paid service.
(and if you happen to remember my older rant about Angry Birds, I already saw that happen in the past)

@JourneymanGeek @Rob Thanks for your feedback! That was also my reasoning and why I asked here. After reading Shog9's message I retracted the flag, so the mods will maybe never know.

What's with all the downvotes on this? meta.stackexchange.com/questions/324334/…

It's a bit oddly disturbing and specific....

Still a fair site-recommendation request though

Yeah, I do think I would prefer that question not being asked

It's on topic. Doesn't mean I have to like it.

When I see something I'd rather not see, I vote it down.

Heck, I might like it if it's posted there.

post it there! :D

@MSOGA Ehhh. I can't tell you how to vote, but that's not what downvotes are for. Though 'unuseful' is a pretty stretchy term, just because you'd rather not see it doesn't make it a bad question?

but if it's on-topic on any site, then the OP will surely ask a very potential HNQ material

I'm getting two watches?
Just got a second e-mail with shipping info...

Please share your watches with the group (read: me)

So, anyone else had two watch e-mails?
Trying to figure out if it was just a mistake or if I'm really expecting two now :P

@Asuna But @Tinkeringbell can't ban me if unmodded...

@Asuna very funny...:

Hello,
I'm writing in reference to your Meta Stack Exchange account:
https://meta.stackexchange.com/users/364003/mee-is-johann-gambolputty
We recently noticed a substantial number of votes on your account to or from specific users. While we encourage everyone to upvote great posts, the motivation for doing so needs to be anchored in the merits of the post, not the person who wrote it. This is just a reminder to please refrain from targeting specific users when voting.

Just out of curiosity, is it a lot of work for a mod to disassociate a post from the user, or just a single click?

Loaded question. You seem to assume a single click isn't a lot of work.

So, is it a lot of work or not much work?

Probably a lot of not much work

4:47 PM
@AnneDaunted as a new mod, I don't find any way to disassociate a post just in a single click...
and I still don't find the way to disassociate a post... (yeah, need to explore more)

@Bookends So it would cause you some trouble and should only be requested when necessary?

user302202
@Feeds Using "24/7" in the context of space exploration is weird.

user302202
Randall himself made fun of it in xkcd.com/1825

What will be interesting imo is whether or not a permanent colony on mars will use it's own day/week/year calendar, or if it will still revolve around earth numbers, and how we keep the two... comparable over time. There would have to be an epoch that is at a precise point in earth time to do conversions

5:07 PM
@AnneDaunted just found the answer: it's technically a single click, but mods cannot directly disassociate a post
@AnneDaunted regarding this, I remember an answer on meta (either MSO or MSE) that post disassociation is not really recommended
well, basically the FAQ:
> If you would like to have your name dissociated from one of your posts, you can request we do so by clicking on the 'contact us' link at the bottom of the page.
because mods cannot disassociate a post, but can only contact SE team requesting for post disassociation (basically the same as 'contact us')

@Bookends Isn't there an option for mods to send a CM message for dissociation?

@SonictheWizardWerehog by "SE team", yes, I meant sending CM message

5:25 PM
@Bookends But isn't the CM message system different from the "contact us" system, in that it goes through the SE system rather than a separate support ticket system, and you can see the response on-site?

if we're being pedantic, then yes it's different for your stated reasons, but the basic answer is still that mods can't disassociate a post by themselves and requires SE-side to do it.

5:50 PM
@Bookends Thanks a lot for that info! I hoped it would be easier.

Hasn't SO always been for professional and enthusiast programmers?

depends on how you interpret it

I thought the whole point of having moderation standards isn't that you could google that in 5s because, of course, SO is trying to make those search results, but that some questions aren't appropriate questions even for enthusiast programmers in that it won't be valuable to the community.

I'm not against making things easier for newer users. i'm simply against the way they're going about it. it feels like divide and conquer tactics rather than trying to bring the community together toward a common goal.

In terms of the bulk of content that I actually see, what's much more harmful to the community isn't flippant responses, but the enormous amount of low quality content that treats SO as a forum where only the OP can get value out of it, rather than making an attempt to create lasting value for others. It's precisely to that end that SO needs tough moderation standards and needs to filter out a lot of junk; that's what makes it better for professionals and enthusiasts.
Of course SO can do better in hand-holding with stuff like the ask question wizard, but stuff that's made to be friendly to beginners is useless if it doesn't scale. The idea that we can be nice to everyone and guide people who are abusing the site as a place for free debugging help without making an effort to help the community in the process rather than just turning them away doesn't scale.

user302202
9:37 PM
Follow up tweets are along the lines of "let's upvote all the downvoted posts".

Since the Summer of Love, for some reason SO has been making it harder to moderate and close the flood gates on low-quality content. I think it's clear they're optimizing for traffic rather than quality: the current state of SO is a testament of the extent that people will donate their time not only answer questions to help the community, but also in answering low-quality questions that don't help much of anyone, but that still give them rep. Optimizing for traffic is completely fine, though I think SO could be more upfront about it.

user302202
Does "non-pasty" mean "those who don't copy-paste"?

let's hope
Adjective: pasty (comparative pastier, superlative pastiest)
  1. Like paste, sticky.
  2. These mashed potatoes aren’t cooked well; they are very pasty.
  3. pale, lacking colour, having a pallor
  4. He is pasty-faced.
  5. (figuratively) He was feeling pasty.
(6 more not shown…)
Noun: pasty (plural pasties)
  1. (chiefly in the plural) A small item of clothing that conceals little more than the...
need to work "pastiest" into conversation somehow

Interesting how it says it's an ethnic slur, that seems like it'd contradict the message of the article.

user302202
A great place to cut off the sentence about a small item of clothing.

user302202
Leaves just enough to imagination.

10:24 PM
@AnneDaunted not done by mods. Needs a cm
@Shog9 also a savory baked dish

yeah, but I can't imagine wanting to be more friendly to anyone who was against savory baked dishes

Also I literally don't recall racism ever being mentioned as a problem here.
Also yesterday was fun. Dad needed to send me some files. DNS on his desktop is bugged so he can't send emails. Whatsapp turned his docx to zip files. I was like 'dad - copy it into a thumb drive and plug it into the router' ...
'router?' 'ugly black box. Has antenna'
Ended up SSHing , mounting the drive and using sftp on my phone to grab the files.
Hmm boson is getting sunsetted

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, but that's only because you're an entirely different species... ;-)
