Morning folks and nonfolk things
@DavidZ: I am not often on Physics.SE, but I like that approach. It's the same one the mods use on RPG.SE, and it's effective at making sure answers go in the answer area rather than the comment area. We even have an FAQ meta about it there: Should users refrain from answers (or partial answers) in comments?V2Blast 5 hours ago
This ended up being a nice congregation of sites

Q: Joshua was told to only remove one shoe, from one foot, not feet in Joshua 5:15

Jayrome1Why was Joshua told to only remove one shoe, from one foot, not feet in Joshua 5:15

Someone ask Shog

That's probably on-topic on three different sites.

Only?
It could be in topic on one... Maybe 2?

I'd think that three is a lot.

Less than 170
Which is a very big but smaller than what it is.

But most sites are sufficiently unique such that overlap is limited.

6:50 AM
Well if it's about the evolutionary benefits of removing one shoe, it could be on-topic on Biology
Also if it's about foot odor, Chem could work too.

If it's about eating them, then Seasoned Advice.

If it's to automate removing shoes, it could be on-topic for SO, but'd need an MCVE and a snippet from OP removing their shoe
@Alex Mmmm the island survivor's food of choice

Oo
I'd almost argue but I remembered that story of mysterious feet washing up somewhere

@JourneymanGeek I admit I could really use a program that automates removing shoes.

Would be hardware not software technically

7:00 AM
I don't care about the rigidity, it could be glassware for all I care
If they can make shoes that connect to your laptop I dunno why this is such a big deal

7:59 AM
@Blue only @rene can, did he reply to you?
@M.A.R.ಠ_ಠ does he even wear shoes?
@JourneymanGeek was there any post or discussion about nuking the tag?
Not that I care personally, but others do.

Q: Can I learn what [learning] is?

Sonic the Introverted HedgehogThe tag learning on this site seems to have no clear purpose, with questions ranging from "learning how to use the site" to "learning about topics". It seems to meet the definition of a too-broad tag. Should it be removed? Or is there a clear purpose we can define it to?

should be 'unlearn all the [learning]', but meh

@Bookends yeah, good enough in this form too. :)

8:14 AM
Can I please get some insight as to why my comment on this post was deleted?

@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog what did you write in the comment?
If you want only mod answer, flag please.
Otherwise, give more details so we mortals have chance to help as well. :)

@ShadowWizard Flags are for asking for action, not just for asking questions.

user437611
@ShadowWizard Yeah, he did. I made him a RO there and I think he's working on KennyBot a bit, since we won't be needing all its features just to keep a room alive.

@Blue hehe yeah, you don't want a bot who can pee in your room, I guess. :D

user437611
Lol

8:17 AM
Or... do you? ;)

user437611
Peeing every 14 days should be sufficient too. ;)

@ShadowWizard A link to the FAQ on why the site permits other users to edit posts, and a summary from there that it's considered rude for authors to revert changes that make improvements.

@Blue hehe, less than that:

Kenny keeping the room warm

yesterday, 1 day 2 hours total – 6 messages, 2 users, 0 stars

Bookmarked 17 secs ago by Shadow Wizard

Should be 16 hours, still buggy.... but no big deal. :D
@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog not very friendly.

@ShadowWizard Those weren't my words; those were from the FAQ (and I didn't edit them in there)

Something like "please don't rollback valid edits" is enough, and if not helping, flag asking to lock the question and that is it.
I also went into such things more than once in the past, it never ends well.
@Blue I am amazed that site still exists...

8:25 AM
@Blue umm, I realized the HNQ Feed didn't spout this 4-hour long Android.SE HNQ today, perhaps because the RSS feeds only returns 30 random HNQ instead of the full 100...

@ShadowWizard that's something I am slowly sneaking in place
@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog last bit is unkind. Other comments cover same ground
> SE may not be the site for you

@Bookends IIRC there's a secret URL used for the app that has a list of all 100 HNQs at once. @Glorfindel can tell you more

Isn't really a call anyone should be making

@Mithrandir stackexchange.com/hot-questions-for-mobile , I wrote that answer :)

Contrast that with @ShadowWizard's comment

Q: Clean up of run-together/hyphenated and singular/plural tags

GillesThe Stack Exchange user interface now prevents creating tags that differ only in hyphenation or pluralization. This hasn't always been so, however, and there are currently many such tag pairs, like log-files and logfiles, or digits and digit, or menuitem and menu-items. Let's clean up! Clean up...

8:47 AM
@ShadowWizard ex SE dev

@JourneymanGeek huh?? oh.. :(
So it's OK, no risk in him being upset. :P
@Bookends nope

@ShadowWizard works for ubiquity now

@JourneymanGeek Ubiquity is a software...
You mean Ubiquiti?
Ubiquiti Networks is an American technology company started in 2005. Based in New York, NY, Ubiquiti manufactures wireless data communication products for enterprise and wireless broadband providers with a primary focus on under-served and emerging markets. == Products == Ubiquiti sells wired and wireless networking products under multiple brand names. The company also sells grid-tied solar kits. Ubiquiti's first product line was its "Super Range" mini-PCI radio card series, which was followed by other wireless products. The company's Xtreme Range (XR) cards operated on non-standard IEEE 802.11...

@Bookends Oh, darn!

user437611
@Glorfindel Do you happen to know which URL we need to use to get all the 100 HNQs?

user437611
@Bookends Are those 30 random HNQs the ones which appear in the side-bar though?

user437611
Are are they a separate set?

8:57 AM
@JourneymanGeek That was a quote from the FAQ
If you didn't like that part, you could have edited it out.

Meh. There's a difference from it being in the FAQ and from someone personally telling you that
And Shadow's comments covered the same ground

user437611
@Bookends I wonder if their is any way to convert a JSON feed into a RSS feed.

And I felt that I could quietly and simply handle it with no need to hit you over the head with unkind.

A: Convert JSON to RSS via Web API?

Maggie YingYou could implementing your own RSS or Atom custom MediaTypeFormatter. You can implement it so that the request will use this formatter when the accept header is set to application/atom+xml or application/rss+xml. Filip has a blog describing this: RSS & Atom MediaTypeFormatter for ASP.NET WebAPI

user437611
I don't understand most of the words there, but it seems possible.

9:03 AM
@SonictheIntrovertedHedgehog so. I'm trusted to know better. I made the decision to based on my best judgement. I don't think it's in any way sensible for me to ping people every time I delete a comment.

@JourneymanGeek agree with you on this one.

@Blue the sidebar uses the same source as the homepage which is also used by the mobile JSON API, but the sidebar is randomized every refresh, while the HNQ RSS is... I dunno how it chooses the questions ._.

@Bookends Randomize();?

user437611
@Bookends ;_;

@ShadowWizard It's randomized, but also cached :/

user437611
9:11 AM
@Bookends This might solve the problem. ^

user437611
I wonder what the {query} part would be.

If I'm reading it correctly, that uses SE API query, but this HNQ API is not under SE API (I know it's confusing and annoying!), so I'm sure either that might help
also, that site looks borken :/
http 500 - internal server error, every time I try the example?

@Asuna it's the sandbox

oh ^^"
That one

user437611
@Glorfindel Yeah, but that's the JSON feed. SE chat rooms don't support that. I'm guessing we'll need a server side script to convert JSON to RSS and return a XML.

user437611
Otherwise, the RSS feed SE has only returns a random 30 out the 100 HNQs.

@JourneymanGeek o.O

user437611
10:54 AM
Searching for "Node.js JSON to XML" gives a few results, but I don't know how we can make it a server side script,

@Blue I think it does, yes

I like how my testing of the HNQ feeds still works ....

user437611
12:06 PM
@rene Aha. So does it still have the problem of "picking random 30"? Or does it return all the HNQs?

user437611
I checked on Physics. It seems to contain all the current HNQs (3) from there.

I think lackadaisical-appeal.glitch.me/hnq/+ ('plus' sign adding all sites?) will show all 100 HNQ

user437611
@Bookends Yes, that contains exactly 100 items!

@Bookends does it? I'm awesome!
5

user437611
So that solves our problem I think? :D

user437611

@rene You sure are. :)

either '+' or '-' without arguments does, whether it's a bug or not :D

definitely not spec'd

user437611

12:22 PM
@Blue Generic Bot will keep it alive. It is already set up to do so.

user437611
@rene Oh, Floern already set it up? Noice! How frequently will it post there? :)

Once every few days I guess. At least once before if freezes.

@ShadowWizard I own every single discworld novel

@JourneymanGeek whoa.... impressive! There are LOTS. I read about 20 or so, think I still got about 5 somewhere in the house.
Talking about MLP, my kids no longer watch it, something/somebody else took their attention away from it:
So now they watch this all day long.... o_O
:7546162 hmm? Didn't have chance to read it, just saw -10 something? :(

Rob
Google your question

> "Octarine" is a color name coined by Terry Pratchett in his Discworld novels. Octarine is said to be the color of magic, as it is apparent in the crackling and shimmering of light. The word refers to the "eighth color," in a spectrum of black, blue, green, yellow, purple, orange, and red.
@Journeyman wrote "octerine" which is typo, proving he didn't copy and paste. :)
(but rather he wrote it out of memory)

2:20 PM
Yup

Rob
You should have said: What is the color of magic in "The Color of Magic"? - if you wanted the color.

@Rob huh, didn't even know it's made into TV show! lol. Is it worth watching?
I read the book.... many years ago.

Rob
@ShadowWizard I haven't seen the book or the movie, but the movie scored 7.1/10 from over 8500 people so I guess the DvD is worth it - whether it's worth $50+ to see it in the Theatre is another question.

Rob

@Asuna work in what sense? It redirects to stackoverflow.com/questions/tagged/contains

So it's just me xd

@Asuna what do you mean? It's a synonym: stackoverflow.com/tags/contains/synonyms

I know, that's why I find this weird

3:36 PM
@Asuna oh, yup
@Asuna maybe you have the new new new nav enabled?

@ShadowWizard yeah

Try to disable it and see what happens if so.

Eh, it took forever to activate though xd

ohh
So, bug report. :D
(MSO, no new new new nav on other sites.)
(I think?)

welp, the screenshot is from meta

yeah, deactivating it does nothing

sniped xd

the 6-8 caught up
It opted me out (so ti's currently disabled), and all redirects work fine

The cultural differences between Europeans and Americans on this thread about StackOverflow mishandling 1500 email addresses are pretty fascinating. https://meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/379804/please-dont-share-my-e-mail-with-amazon-without-my-express-consent The Americans (I assume) are like "meh, don't do it again". The Europeans are talking million-euro fines.

I just hope there'll be fewer lame contests because nobody can be sent anything anymore.

@Mrs.Robinson eh. Some of us like lame contests and silly swag

oh no xd

Besides, that wasn't even a contest.

oof, haven't gotten it xd

@JourneymanGeek actually that's not even a contest, it's a survey. Very different. /cc @Mrs.Robinson
Swag for contests is sent by SE, not Amazon.
For now... who knows what will happen in the future. lol

4:02 PM
@ShadowWizard surveys that exclude me I am ambivalent on ;p

Maybe they'll let Amazon send it with drones. :D

@ShadowWizard actually even not that's direct
They have a company that handles it

@JourneymanGeek meaning?
@JourneymanGeek oh, yeah, got email from a manager in that company when the swag got stuck at customs.
They're good.

@ShadowWizard pretty certain SE literally goes 'send this address these things,' and a vendor makes it so

Printex, Inc is the company. :)
> I work with Stack Overflow on the fulfillment of some of their gifts. They are trying to send you a Cheese Board and it is stuck in customs. They are waiting on you to call your Local DHL facility to clear up some final paper work. If you can please call them that would be great.

> Please let me know if you have any questions.

4:05 PM
Yup

I do agree they need to add to the swag contest posts some small reminder that such emails might be sent, and one agree to get them by posting an answer.

@ShadowWizard rip

?
It's all cleared up, DHL just needed my ID number.
Cheese Board arrived safely.

I suppose. I actually consider it nbd

Now stashed safely in a cupboard. :P

4:09 PM
> We expected to get 500 developers to test the 2019 Developer Survey, and instead we got nearly 1,500. Fulfilling the gift cards ended up being a lot more work than we expected for our very small Marketing team.
... how do you accidentally get 1000 more testers than expected? xd

user302202
By working in Marketing

@Asuna By not keeping track and ending the test on time? Or sending out too many invitations, expecting a certain response rate that's exceeded... there's lots of ways I guess :P

Still
There could still be a hard limit and anyone beyond that doesn't get access

@ShadowWizard I have a box of 'extra' swag at the moment ;p
SO mug and sippy cup (I prefer the proper water bottles) and a bunch of stickers

@JourneymanGeek start your own contest..... ;)

lol
SU actually

meh, I tried ^^"

Or MSE now that he's a top user mod. :P

But it's SO swag 🤔

@Asuna no, all sites got swag
e.g. mod hats

4:24 PM
Do all sites have SO mugs as swag?

SO just got more contests. ;)
@Asuna oh, no... just hats, stickers, etc. I think.
Mugs are indeed SO only, probably.

Because SO mugs were specified in the message

Wait... what message?

Got it for a ux survey thing

@JourneymanGeek SO mug?? lol

4:26 PM
@Asuna there's su and so mugs
I got both

11 mins ago, by Journeyman Geek
SO mug and sippy cup (I prefer the proper water bottles) and a bunch of stickers

@ShadowWizard the joke is... I picked swag over an Amazon gift card

@JourneymanGeek Oh ^^"

I use the SU mug

@Asuna ohhh
@JourneymanGeek lol

4:29 PM
Stickers are from a few places

@JourneymanGeek Maybe stickers are the answer!

But what's the question?

Stickers is the new 42

Does anybody know what happened to the old-old close reasons "subjective and argumentative", "no longer relvant". They seem to have disappeared somewhere between 2009 and the close reason changes (NARQ+NC->TB,POB,Unclear).

Q: Close reasons have gone missing, previously closed as such affected

fretjeI think this has something to do with the recent change regarding close reasons. Some of the reasons have gone (unintentionally?) missing: On Super User, I no longer see the "no longer relevant" reason. And on Meta, there are even only three left, namely "dupe", "not SO related" and "too local...

4:39 PM
@Mrs.Robinson thanks, I searched but maybe I used the wrong keywords :)

user302202
> By design.

> We are merging close reasons; there were too many, and they were redundant.

how is it no longer relevant? No other user in the world will ever have that problem? If so, then see "too localized" — Jeff Atwood Feb 8 '10 at 11:00
