Is it possible to get a dynamic edit link to any question? That is, when you click on such a link on a particular question's thread you are automatically directed to the edit page of that question

user405243

user405243
Dynamic as in ^

user405243
So that we don't have to change the <post-id> everytime

@SmokeDetector k
@Blue so how will you tell the post ID? I don't really understand what you want.
you want to edit a question without knowing its ID.... ???

user405243
8:13 AM
@ShadowWizard From the URL of the page we are currently on

user405243
Say you are viewing this question:

user405243

Q: What if nothing exists besides information

F WwWhat if Information is all that exists. Perhaps this would have Profound implications ideology. Fascism would run rampant.

user405243
And in the comment section you have a <edit-link>

user405243
Clicking on that should take you to the edit page of that question

@Blue the "edit" link is just this: link to editing the question, or any post for that matter. Why you want an alternative edit link?
You can right click it and copy the URL.

user405243
8:15 AM
@ShadowWizard Yes, but that just appears for questions which are already closed

@Blue no. All posts in SE have "edit" link below them.

user405243
@ShadowWizard New users may not be aware of that. I am trying to create a custom close reason with a dynamic edit link so that I don't have to change the post-id for it everytime

user405243
Or else I'd have to post a screenshot everytime with a free-hand circle for new users, telling them where the edit link is located

@Blue if one can't see the "edit" link they won't see it elsewhere, no matter how you try to push it in their face. :)
Can't be more clear ^
Even for "new users".

user405243
@ShadowWizard Heh, you have no idea how many new users I come across everyday who can't see it ;)

8:18 AM
@Blue exactly. What's wrong with guiding them when they need guidance?

user405243
@ShadowWizard It's just easier to post a dynamic link :/

Use comment instead with [edit] magic link...

user405243
Of course I could post a screenshot everytime

user405243
@Somewhat Ah, that exists?

@Somewhat that miiiighttt be what he needs ;p

user405243
8:19 AM
Could you elaborate? @Somewhat

@Blue so you essentially ask for magic link for editing. That's interesting, but IMO pointless.
huh, it exists. lol

Try commenting on a post with [edit], it will directly link to edit the current post

@Blue just post a comment, anywhere, with the exact text [edit] inside it.

user405243

Alas, but I have but one vote to give. Otherwise... erm, it would be voting fraud and very very bad.

No prob, I always use it like "consider [edit]ing the post to improve it by adding some context" or like that..

ah, the oddities of my home network
I did (well reverted) a change and.... I need someone to do a load of laundry to test its stability

I have some dirty socks that need laundry.
:D

8:26 AM
I run homeplug. With my original setup, my old washing machine would create enough noise to knock out my network
we switched washing machines and to better homeplug units since
my network has all manner of fun, strange things going on

So you activate it all via the phone? I heard many people open this up for everyone in public sites and let anyone turn on/off the lights, turn on/off their washing machines, etc, just for fun. ;)
Just hope it's secured against hackers, they can use it against SE...

How do I view a list of chat rooms created by a given user?

@ShadowWizard actually the new router might be ssh capable

@forest don't think we can see created, best we can know is list of rooms where the user is RO.
It's listed in the user's chat profile under "Owner of these rooms"

@ShadowWizard in theory I could probably do home automation off this
even oldschool stuff since I have an actual serial port

@JourneymanGeek good! :D

@ShadowWizard How do I view an individual's chat profile from their network profile?

8:58 AM
I'm probably going to need/want to add key based auth if I expose it to the broader internet. And the cheap option of changing the port

@forest oh, you can't. One of the biggest downsides of chat, IMO.
Unless MSE/SO chat, you'll have to manually search SE chat users for a specific user.

@ShadowWizard I found out I can just put chat. in front of their profile.

@forest only on SO or MSE.

Well it was SO that I was looking for.

Oh, good. :)

9:05 AM
That dude who was freaking out on Meta about posting sensitive information that lawyers were pissed about just got me interested lol.
But I can't read German so it won't be of much use.

o0
on chat?

Yeah on some chat.
Lawyers gave him two days to remove it so he tried to flag like 1k comments of his.

8 rooms, all as one-on-one rooms with same other user.

I see only three.
It was supposedly posted 2-3 years ago. I see one room 388 days ago.

.....
I've heard this story before

9:08 AM
@forest other 5 deleted, need 10k on SO to see them.

?
@ShadowWizard Ah, would those be the ones that he flagged?

@forest hard to believe, like deleted posts they're not indexed anywhere anymore.

Do any of them look actually....

So I take it the mods got to it already and deleted whatever he wanted gone?
@JourneymanGeek Look actually what?

Like stuff that looks like it should be secret

9:10 AM
@JourneymanGeek hundreds of messages, all in German. Can't really tell.

Well I can only see three rooms, and one of them seems to have code with a password in it, but it looks like it could be a sample password (and certainly not a thousand posts like that). But they're all German.
@ShadowWizard You got a permalink transcript to the deleted 5 rooms?

this doth not smell right

@forest it won't help you, you'll get 404 error trying to view them.

Its on chat.se... ;p
flashes his badge hat

9:11 AM
@ShadowWizard Able to archive them?
I'm too lazy to find a 10k SO account to borrow.

@forest well, found the room.
> animuson has deleted this room.
Guess better not dig into it too much.

Is the deleted room available to 10k accounts?

Probably he just deleted the room without deleting the messages themselves.
@forest and mods, yeah.
Just like deleted posts.

Do you have 10k on SO? Or do I need to find someone who does?
Can you link the URL to the room (even if it is 404 for me)?

Since it was deleted on purpose by SE staff prefer not to, sorry.

9:15 AM
Guh, well I'll find out anyway, I'm just lazy and like shortcuts.

Were you able to deduce at least what kind of information he wanted gone?

Not sure... probably source code. There are tons of that in there.

Does it look like "enterprise" source code? What lang?
I love me a source tree.

I don't get how you can basically have a lawyer demand you nuke everything

9:19 AM
Well that's why I'm so curious!

@JourneymanGeek if you expose source code that is not yours.

@ShadowWizard specific instances of source I get

If it's 1k posts with source code, it could be a substantial portion.

@forest Java, Spring.

hm

9:20 AM
I doubt there is several kloc on chat

It could be that a lawyer just demanded to delete 1k comments, even ones without sensitive information, but OP seemed pretty insistent on each of the 1k posts containing sensitive information.
From that I'm thinking trade secrets, customer info, source code, etc.
Maybe even classified if the guy is dumb enough. :D

The Krabby Patty secret formula.
@ShadowWizard Do you have any hint as to what company it's from?
Or the context in general.

Eh. That crosses the line into doxing. Doxing bad

9:43 AM
@forest I am totally uncomfortable with this
I'm going to shunt this to the trash room.

@JourneymanGeek Sure, sorry if I'm spamming a bit. I tend to think out loud.

And this is totally doxing folks and unacceptable.
Please don't do it agaib

I'm doxing no one. I have no idea who this dude is and don't care where he lives.

Its not the spamming. Its the blatent disreguard for the privacy of others
16 messages moved to Trashcan
Someone got in trouble over this, potentially, enough that a CM nuked the content there.

I'll read the SE ToS to double check their definition of doxing, just to make sure.
A CM nuked content? I thought they only deleted a chat room he flagged.

9:46 AM
That's good enough.

The thing is, everything here is under CC-by-SA, and archival preserves this all anyway, especially given the fact that the sensitive information is most certainly present in the archives (since they were posted in '15 and '16).

Still dosen't mean its ok to drag it out here

Yeah you're right. I'll avoid mentioning the name of his company here.
Though of course it's still available in all those revisions for anyone who cares.

Or at this point, the topic

Not too long ago, there was that atheist in Iran or whatever who used his real account to admit to some capital crime, and 5 minutes searching his profile gave his real address (through a website whois mentioned in some post). We (me and a couple folks over at the DMZ) sent emails to SE staff to get it deleted.
So sometimes sleuthing around can be really beneficial.

9:57 AM
Java is a good coffee too.
(aka, sorry but I'm out of this, @Journeyman explained why.)

@forest I think this would be a very good time to drop trying to figure out what company the poor sod is from
Ok Right.
6 messages moved to Trashcan
@forest I really meant it when I asked you to drop it.

lol ok ok I won't talk about it anymore.

Thank you.

BTW you might want to redact one of my posts (that wasn't moved to trashcan) a few messages up which mentions the company name. Just saying. Anyways, on to another topic... Oh, how about [insert derogatory comment about a language I hate here].

10:08 AM
What's the difference between Chimney and Trashcan?

.... oops
One's for smokey messages, one's for things we don't want

lols

I have a script that lets me bulk move messages over to the chimney ++ its muscle memory
since it dosen't fill in the name
and usually I don't need to tell folks twice

Apologies, I just get overly curious about things and need to sleuth around lol
I'll keep that stuff out of this room from now on (and will certainly double-check the ToS to make sure I am understanding the specific rules).
Huh, the ToS used to be on the bottom of the page. Where is it now?

10:16 AM
I take it it'd be the AUP I'd want to look at.

Also, as a RO and a long time user - sometimes I might have to make a decision on things not explicitly obvious on those.
I'm going to ask nicely at least at first.

Looks like it's explicitly allowed (I can post anything that's already "publicly available on the web", such as revision history or public archives, and it doesn't count as personal information disclosure), but I totally understand that this chat room may have rules more strict than the bare AUP of the network.
RO = Room Owner?

Ah, makes sense. You're the boss here. :P

I don't want to go "my house, my rules"

10:19 AM
also doxxing is just generally not cool

But I'm the janitor, and I will throw you out if you track mud in.

Well it's fair, I mean it is your house.
Yeah I'll keep it to other rooms (that allow it). :P
Cause some of us like the mud!
More natural than concrete, at least. Better on the ankles.
@Mithrandir Why do some people spell it with one x, and others with two?

Well if folks complain, its worth stopping.

I've never actually understood that.

@forest cause young people language

10:21 AM
The x makes it look cool? :P

and its kinda vaguely spoken slang as much as typed slang

@forest *shrugs* Why do people mix up "flaunt" and "flout"?

Same reason people say "another thing coming" instead of "another think coming".
People can't into languages.

Some things are simply beyond human comprehension.

The most important thing I've ever learned about linguistics is that "Finno-Ugric" is a very, very fun term to speak out loud.

10:25 AM
@JourneymanGeek I really don't understand this "mood" thing.

mood thing?

Neither do I. I mean, what's a "mood"?

(A really ironic response to that would have been saying "mood" in response.)

How can something "be a mood"?

Ah
Never heard anyone go mood.
Moo?
sure

10:27 AM
Maybe it's the sound a new Pokemon makes.

I'd never heard of it until I, uh, starting hanging out with my actual age group. Sometimes I question that decision.

Ah
I'm somewhat a lot older so
definately no idea
and forest is probably positively ancient

I tend to only hang out with people either two decades older than me, or two decades younger than me. It helps shield me from the insanity of my generation.
Nah, not that old :P

@forest It's all relative...

Though I guess, when you think about it, all generations are insane.
At least I'm not the "Twitter and social media" generation that grew up with an iPad.
I used GPRS on a flip phone and I liked it!

10:32 AM
I owned an actual nokia 3310

Very solid phones, they were.
Nowadays you have iPhones that automatically void the warranty when it gets ever slightly too humid and a water detection sensor trips!

And back then Thinkpads were ugly but you could beat someone with it, then type out an apology.

Back then, everything was more solid than today.
Things weren't designed to break in 3 years and force you to buy another.
Hell, my grandmother's oven with a mechanical flip digit display lasted longer than my last two combined! Seriously, it still works like a charm!
Oh my god I really am becoming old. I think the first time I use "back in my day" verbatim and unironically, I should just quit the internet.

glares at dryer
At least that silly thing stopped tripping the house power now

Ah, those machines made in South Korea, intentionally designed not to dry clothes 100% because of the irrational fear Koreans have that clothes being too dry will cause your body to burst into flame?

10:36 AM
@forest Me, yesterday, to my parents: "Oh great, you've started *"back in my day..."-*ing."

heh
I mean to be fair, everything today is retarded.
Like look at today's Pokemon. You literally get TWO FREE LEGENDARIES with a game purchase! Back in my day, you had to work for hours and hours, go through dozens of ultra balls, tens of save files, sweat and blood and tears, just to capture one legendary after 50 hours of grueling gameplay and stumbling through pitch black caves with almost no light. It's one reason I don't play new video games...

*has no idea what Pokemon is all about and didn't understand what you just said*

@Mithrandir Old Pokemon = battling with badass steel dragons and flaming monsters. New Pokemon = battling with floating icecream cones with smiley faces, and cute puppies with stars on their face.

(psst. @forest I think that was a coal mine in the 20s in wales)

*shrugs* I never really play video games and don't get why people get so worked up over them :P

10:40 AM
I grew up with some of the older video games.
Back when they were difficult, even kids' games.
Ugh, why doesn't disabled responsiveness save through login sessions?

Alley Cat was pretty difficult. Kept falling through the cracks. :D
Xonix became easy once I figured how to deal with the crazy little black square.

What was that old 2600 video game with the skateboard?
Like the guy who skates through buildings and shit.

Tony Hawk?
Pretty old...

Way, way older than that.
Maybe it wasn't 2600, but it was one of those old ones.

Simpsons?

Q: Fan speed switch: why OFF :: HIGH :: MED :: LOW?

RichFMany AC fans, including inexpensive floor models, have a rotary speed control which rotates from OFF to HIGH to MED to LOW. Since the switch does not rotate 360°, you have to rotate it backwards to shut it off. This has always slightly annoyed me, because it appears to make no logical sense to ...

You know, I've always wondered why this was.

Minirant: I thought of meta.stackoverflow.com/q/339463/1709587 while reviewing today, and rereading it reminded me that I've in fact been fruitlessly pushing for systemic changes to enable more politeness and welcomingness for years before the Welcoming drive came along. It's sad, given that, to now be on the Evil Team That Just Wants To Be Dicks To Everyone. I have no idea how to bridge the rift, though.

Q: Why do electric fan knobs often place the highest setting right after the off position?

BitgardenElectric fans are often controlled by a knob which the user turns to power the fan on or off, and control the fan's speed. On a lot of fans, the knob goes immediately from the off position to the highest speed, followed by the other speed settings in descending order. For example on the pictur...

"compiler error"-style rejection message ftw...

@Somewhat :( nooooooo

5:27 PM
@MarkAmery Huh wait... what makes you say you're on that team?
Oh wait, I see.
In such cases, why not use a comment or two?

@Tinkeringbell Eh, I don't like littering unrelated posts with publicly-visible comments about suggested edits or about moderation actions

True, for unrelated posts that might get weird.
Hmm.
Anyway, the part about the linked question not being the same was good. Just leave out the 'nonsense' next time?
@MarkAmery The language on SO was still fun at that time, I see ;)

@Tinkeringbell Sure, could've done - but what I think makes the rejection rude is the dismissal without a thorough explanation of somebody's thoughtful suggestion, not the usage of the word "nonsense" (although people objecting to me using that word is a recurrent theme, so I've been consciously reducing my usage of it)
@Tinkeringbell Yeah, it's perhaps not a shining example of niceness :P

Hmm. What's the current char limit on reject edit reasons?

way too short - like half the length of a comment or something?
I'll check
150 chars

5:40 PM
Wow. That allows less nuance than Twitter...

I was wrong - that's a quarter of the length of a comment

Are comments really 600 chars? It always feels shorter ;)

Yeah, it's enough room to say "GRRR, YOU ARE STUPID" but not enough to thoughtfully engage with the suggestion
yeah, they're 600. I was surprised too.

In 150 chars:
> link is about not storing content in caches at all, Q is about avoiding revalidation requests. These are different objectives with different solutions
But that definitely reads worse than that paragraph you wrote ;)

yeah, that's pretty good
although it drops the other two criticisms of the edit that I wanted to include

5:45 PM
That's true. I just assumed the first paragraph was the most major issue.

and I think the (almost opposite) had value too

If there's 5 reasons something is bad, I tend to pick the most obvious one ;)

defensible :P

(almost opposite) is 17 chars. Hmmm.

haha

5:47 PM
Perhaps some more abbreviations? :P

I'm enjoying you tackling this exercise of how to cram as much as possible into the reject reason (for a rejection I already did, years ago) when it was totally not the primary point of my chat message :P
but you're doing an excellent job of it!

> Link is on not storing content in caches, Q is on avoiding revalidation requests. Different objectives with different (almost opposite) solutions
I'm at 145 now :P

pretty good, although the (almost opposite) should be after the first "Different", not the second

That doesn't change my character count though :P

indeed

5:49 PM
And you were asking how to bridge a gap :P
I assumed that meant you wanted to know how to cram as much niceness as possible in 150 characters...

the gap I had in mind was between Team: Let's Be Dicks To Everyone and the compassionate and enlightened staff :P
but cramming niceness into 150 chars is an excellent skill to learn, too ;)
I'm now wondering if my minirant was actually cryptic

@MarkAmery Meh. In this case, 150 characters indeed don't allow many nuances. So unless you're deliberately posting insults, you're not on the D-team on this one, I think ;)
As a mod, I see much worse :P
@MarkAmery A little ;)

For the record - I am not in fact in favour of Being Dicks To Everyone, and don't think most of the opponents of the Welcoming drive are. My minirant was more "I resent that those of us who strongly disagree with the ideas about how to treat people encompassed by the Welcoming drive are largely perceived by Team Welcoming as just wanting to be dicks to everyone, and every time I come across an old post of mine that was primarily about being nicer to new users, it fires up that resentment again".

Well, I for one don't see how the two posts you've linked so far (aside from some language) are going against the whole Welcoming Wagon thing. In fact, having that welcome wagon might finally get you that roomier character limit? ( I don't know about the comments on review actions, as I don't want to moderate fights in the review queue myself :P)
What's one of the ideas that you disagree with, but that doesn't make you bad?
