useless rant (?) meta.stackexchange.com/questions/311729/… @rene @JourneymanGeek @Glorfindel
@ShadowWizard stuck a fork in it
@ShadowWizard based on the similar question list on the right, looks like a daily rant...
@SomewhatMemorableName not really. Nobody suggested before to just not let new users to register. It got nothing about being nice.
Wow, so... the similar questions list is unwelcoming...
he needs to stay reasonable. I really need that bounty ...
14:39
bounty?
Do you?
Free Internet Points !!!!
14:42
I'll go out for an ice cream ... the weather is good
@KevinB I (don't) see what you did there...
expected an emoji, got a dot
14:44
oh, my logins were all weird this morning from removing google and adding email, making sure it was working here
Odd, first Google result for the dot: library.stanford.edu/search/…
there is no waffle emoji

@ShadowWizard looks better than this...
Hey, anyone up for editing this question to reflect it's about resizing window size and not zooming? It requires quite a lot of time which I don't have ATM.
(I think that's what he means at least)
14:53
Oh, wow, I didn't even notice that the top bar is responsive everywhere right now. That's cool.
Let me poke at it.
In the meantime, the sidebar still doesn't expand to the full width when it moves to the bottom.
15:07
Any mods around - chat.stackoverflow.com/users/1008292/ten5 is a person who has some mental illness, and isn't taking a 'hint' to go see a doctor.
He has habit of spamming chat rooms with OCD questions about making 'plans'. For hours at a time.
The position of the PHP chat room is that he isn't allowed to talk there until he gets some treatment.
He's not taking the hint, and could do with preventing spamming other chat rooms that don't currently have room owners online.
@JourneymanGeek are you here? perhaps you can share your experience in your similar case? ^
Did you raise a mod flag?
@Danack If someone's being disruptive, raise a chat mod flag. chat.SO is on a separate domain from chat.SE and chat.Meta, so only SO mods have powers there.
15:10
Hmm. i haven't seen any flags
fwiw he has a history in the JS chat too, just hasn't been there recently
in JavaScript on Stack Overflow Chat, Jun 4 at 20:10, by ten5
hi, can I ask about the php, I am not able to get the needed info in that room?
but yeah, consider raising a chat mod flag on SO. Mods on here... well, there is no mods other than SE staffs on Meta SE.
and I don't see SO mods on this room either
Thanks - I didn't know mod flags were a thing.
oh wow... grabs popcorn and open the transcript
15:30
@Danack telling someone "go see a doctor" is rude and offensive, I'll flag such a chat message if seeing it. Instead if a user is posting inappropriate messages (either in chat or on the site) just flag and move on.
We don't and should not judge/treat people. Most we can advice is something like "I think you better stay away from this place for a while".
Seems like he is talking about zoom, by the way @ShadowWizard :)
@Catija well, same final result, in a way.
But still, zoom will break other things.
Yep. Don't even have to change the answer because I don't use either word, I think.
I think 200% or 250% zoom level activates "mobile device mode" at some level, dunno if browser or SE.
(not mobile web...)
So while zoom of 150% will break many things, 200% will work as the site will think it's a mobile device.
@ShadowWizard agreed, kick-mute and moving messages is good enough for this particular user imo. We're well past the point of asking him to stop.
15:34
@KevinB yeah, probably. and if just trolling without specific rude/offensive messages, mod should still manually chat ban to stop the trolling and disrupting other users.
Still, we should not engage him.
the third kickmute creates an autoflag anyway
right?
... I'm not actually sure.
some auto flag is raised, not sure when exactly.
> After three kicks from the room, an automatic moderator flag is raised.
So... yes.
huh. Nice.

A: How to defend your question against close-votes

luser droogImprove the question If the close-voters have left comments about what is wrong, edit the question to address those concerns. Flag a mod If it's a simple misunderstanding, and editing hasn't fixed it somehow. Then if it's simple to explain in 100 words, then hit flag and write a custom message...

"Flag a mod", is their 1st and foremost idea :-/
The system is really bad in teaching people how to post good questions.
Yeah, mods are the solution to all problems
14.8k on SO?
actually, not sure if it's supposed to be or...
That's not that much
Well, I was complaining that there wasn't much recently out there to answer on MSE... now I have something. :D
Considering that SO serves tags like javascript and PHP
16:08
I was about to offer that SOCVR can help in getting a question closed until I realized they were asking for the opposite ...
OK OP has a silver badge for c and bronze for c++
yes and those have some notorious close voters

Can someone with del votes on MSO cast some here
... can someone tell my lazy butt what the vote split is here: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/370014/… I'm guessing I've got at least 5-10 dvs.
@Catija +89-10 :(
@Catija spot on 👏
... what's LRiO's answer at?
16:34
Eesh.
Well, at least they like mine better. :D
Surprised by the number of upvotes? That just says how many users participate on MSO and how diverse they are...
I like the comments better ... hides
@rene Yes... ;)
@SomewhatMemorableName I guess I'm sorta surprised that there's more upvotes on LRiO's answer than DVs on mine... Though, people are often less likely to DV.
@Catija All in all it confirms me in my stance that not to comment would be the better choice at all. Snarkyness still looks like a pretty subjective thing to me yet.
DV/CV move on ...
I feel this comment is unnecessary, or worse, rude. I did flag as NLN though, mind helping to flag as NLN? (I don't think it deserves rude flag)
16:48
Asking for a curse is clearly rude.
feel free to flag...
Even for anonymous voters
@SomewhatMemorableName I did
@rene The most CV reasons are missing MCVE at SO, and also significantly raising code with errors or not yet implemented and lacks concrete context at CR as far I've noticed.
17:16
@Catija Oh, sorry. I've been overlooking that your cite wasn't their original comment, but how you gave a better suggestion. Can't see their original comment (yet) right now.
@πάνταῥεῖ I ninja-ed you nicely there ...
@rene You did, I was just typing that here :)

@ShadowWizard Yeah, 4 separate 100 voted posts. Sorry for the confusion.
I was kinda tired...
@Catija As for the relationship, it was just an example, but make no mistake this is a real world example. It is prevalent right now at mSO. There are a few users with hundreds of upvotes over the past 60 days, but that pales in comparison to being able to vote hundreds of times. Even with posts, sure, you can write something mediocre in a minute, but if it is well researched and has actual depth it probably took as much time as it would take to vote all 40 times.
I can go vote 10 times in 10 minutes easily. I would challenge anyone to write 10 well written answers or questions (even harder) in 10 minutes.
The idea that there is an equivalency here is astonishing to me. I didn't expect anyone to actually believe that it existed. On main sites (and on MSE) the "participation" tab is the "reputation" tab, so to me it seems like a misunderstanding in implementation. Furthermore, the "participation" tab so closely tracks the "voters" tab it is essentially useless as presently implemented.
19:08
Looks like Peter Mortensen has again started depriving post authors of their reopening edit by making grammar edits to closed posts within five days. Nowadays I see it only on posts closed as duplicates; guess he isn't aware that those are also pushed to the RV queue even though they aren't marked as "on hold".
I personally don't think third party edits should cause the post to enter the reopen queue.
I thought we found that out from the Help and Improvement queue. In almost all cases, the required edit which would cause a post to be reopened must be made by the asker.
@TravisJ It was the case originally, when the feature was first implemented in 2013, that only author edits would add it. They later changed it in response to a feature request. The Help & Improvement queue didn't exist at the time that FR was filed and implemented.
Regarding @Tim's post, what goods could comments leave about this VLQ question

Q: WAP in Python to accept string and find the count of lower case and upper case alphabets

shuvam chatterjeeI tried using string function but didn't succeed. How to solve the given problem.Elaborate in details.

Amusingly, at the top of that post since I don't have the rep to not see ads, I see the ad and it has a more descriptive problem than the question.

I mean, that question has severe issues. No comment will fix it.
The linked one above
@TravisJ Just my thoughts.
Ah, sorry, I forgot to temporarily un-ignore them after a prior incident.
19:15
lol, understandable
(sorry :P)
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog There weren't any incidents, just disagreements. You probably need to learn how to distinguish such stuff.
@Sonic Feel free to ignore me further anyways.
You were interjecting into my conversations. I try to be fully transparent when I ignore and un-ignore you, because I feel hurt when others give me a cold shoulder, and I don't want others to feel hurt for the same reason.
And I was feeling very strongly about myself, so your comments at the time seemed off-putting.
I don't care that much. I probably simply should ignore you.
And let you know of course!
I hope your spectrum let's you achieve that message well.
Now that's the type of message that prompts me to ignore you.
ya'll probably should stop now
19:29
I'm going to say "stop now"... no "probably".
As can be evidenced by this message, I wasn't typing another argument.
This room was placed in timeout for 1 minute; I want you all to know...
...my wood chipper, fuel leak corrected, started on the first pull.

Woohoo!
Now back to your regularly-scheduled timeout
I wonder, why timeout after it's already ended?
@Shog9 Getting rid of beetle kill trees?
drought-kill
well
aspens kinda just die anyway
but the dry winter and spring definitely didn't help
19:32
@Shog9 They do and they don't.... they just pop up shoots elsewhere
@Shog9 So you're admitting that you abused a timeout just to get people to listen to you, when we were already listening?
yeah, well... In a certain sense, aspens kinda live forever unless you poison them
in that sense, my aspen is alive and well
but I still have a pile of brush to deal with
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog no
At least you'll have plenty of firewood!
If I was going to admit that, I'd say something like,
"This concludes my abuse of the timeout feature"
@Shog9 So then why timeout after the behavior had already stopped?
19:34
But instead, I shall say,
"I have now successfully used the timeout feature to change the topic to Aspens"
3
@Shog9 So you abused a moderator action to change a topic?
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog yes
Now, back to Aspens
Did you take into account the risk that I would change the topic to timeouts?
19:35
Pando (Latin for "spread out"), also known as the Trembling Giant, is a clonal colony of an individual male quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) determined to be a single living organism by identical genetic markers and assumed to have one massive underground root system. The plant occupies 43 hectares (106 acres) and is estimated to weigh collectively 6,000,000 kilograms (6,600 short tons), making it the heaviest known organism. The root system of Pando, at an estimated 80,000 years old, is among the oldest known living organisms. Pando is located 1 mile (1.6 km) southwest of Fish Lake on Utah...
We lost a tree in our front yard to beetles :(
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog I concluded that you would calculate the risk of being kicked if you tried that.
I have my own tree. Best part: It's tended to by the government, no maintenance required! :D
@Undo it's really bad here, you go up near winter park and it's just alllll beetle kill
I have a dead tree in my yard that is looming over my garage. I really need to take it down, but it's rather large.
19:36
piece by piece is the way to go
They were African Tree Death Beetles or something
bad bugs. no like.
@Andy I would deal with that before you need a new garage
@Undo are they as bad as Palo Verde beetles?
I am actually wondering if I should change my nick to "beetlejuice"
those are the stuff of nightmares
19:37
@Shog9 Yes, I did. I knew that I'd have nothing to say about trees, or about anything at the time you'd kick.
on the topic of beetle juice...

this is the worst headline I have ever read
One year we had a really bad problem with potato bugs
lol
The unrelated sawyer beetles (Monochamus) and some other wood-boring beetle taxa (especially Cucujoidea) are sometimes called "bark beetles", too. A bark beetle is one of about 220 genera with 6,000 species of beetles in the subfamily Scolytinae. Traditionally, this was considered a distinct family Scolytidae, but is now understood to be very specialized members of the "true weevil" family (Curculionidae). Well-known species are members of the type genus Scolytus, namely the European elm bark beetle S. multistriatus and the large elm bark beetle S. scolytus, which like the American elm bark beetle...

we'd go along the rows pinching them off, but they'd return in larger numbers
kill one, get 7 back ...
so my mom read somewhere that you could grind up the larvae with water and spray the mixture on the plants to discourage more arrivals
I don't recall if that worked, but collecting and pureeing them wasn't a ton of fun
Spider mites might get rid of beetles.
that doesn't seem like an improvement...
Just jump to the end of that chain and drop over some lions in your potato bed.
19:40
maybe ground spider mite juice would repel beetles
Spider mites are easy to get rid of though
with lions?
Yes, lion mites.
At that point you need to get wasps to get rid of the lion mites.
It is all very straightforward.
where do the gorillas come in?
Spider mites are rather susceptible to basic pesticides, nothing nasty.
19:42
I'm using soap water with a healthy shot of hydrogen peroxide right now
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog And what feelings do you believe your messages leave me with this?
Doc Bronner's Castile Soap, for that crazy hippy goodness
@πάνταῥεῖ Since you knew when and why I was ignoring you each time, probably a little less hurt. But if you want to talk about this, let's head over to Sonic's Den
Nope, no need for that.
And I am also strong enough to bear that.
Talking about ignoring kinda defeats the purpose. Talking about kicking, OTOH...
19:44
Gorillas? They don't get to come in, such troublesome guests.
What do you use to get rid of the kittens then?
Deep waters.
Crazy cat ladies
then you have mildew
@Shog9 I've heard this poem before. Doesn't the lady who swallowed all that die at the end?
19:46
of course
One doesn't simply get rid of kittens. Besides, over time they turn into cats so problem solved.
Anyhow. Sorry to drop into the middle of a very entertaining conversation, but since I'm here and talking: I already scrolled through the tour and took a glance at the help center... any other advise on how to figure MSE out, since there's no meta?

@TravisJ Something I've thought of ...
@Tinkeringbell Don't try to figure MSE out. Tis a silly place
Thanks! That's enough for now. If I'm still confused after all that, you'll know.
19:48
The Tavern might be even worse regarding that :-P
In other news, is the API hosed? Questions are being reported as deleted but they're not so much?
@Tinkeringbell you'll be confused but so are we, so it is kind of normal ...
@Shog9 As that was posted on MSO, it doesn't take into account that users lose rings for downvotes on MSE.
@Machavity I am pretty sure that there's no PHP suited API :3
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog No one cares
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog to be fair, if I'd posted it on MSE it still wouldn't have taken that into account
19:50
@πάνταῥεῖ This is JavaScript. So we're elite now
I mean, on MSE, people often don't consider, "I disagree with this, but is it so bad that the author should lose privileges over it?"
@Machavity Praise it!
I say this having actually lost a privilege for making a disagreed FR.
@Machavity someone found /2.2/questions/delete/* and it worked ...
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog How long did it take to regain it?
19:51
May 10 at 12:34, by Sonic the Inclusive Hedgehog
tl;dr I'm not really concerned about the numbers here. I'm ideologically, morally opposed to the idea of losing rep simply for disagreement.
@Undo They're fast, don't ya know?
Oh, yeah, kinda hard to have a discussion about numbers and ignore the numbers
I'm still quite OK with the idea of losing rep for being disagreeable
5
@Shog9 isn't this what happens in real life?
@rene Yeah, everything is slowly going back to normal. For SO. Which is probably not really a thing
19:52
Being disagreeable and having others disagree with you are two different things.
that's what I'd expect a disagreeable person to say!
an agreeable person would've, y'know, agreed with me
@Shog9 Spoken like a pointy-haired man
On top of the above, the system offers to give you back your lost rings in exchange for recanting your opinion. This is very clique-y.
@Shog9 When you get that old wood chipper going, I'm sure something will occur to you.
@MartinJames read up - gasket cured, it started up this morning
19:54
@Shog9 :)
Thoughts on were the content came from: meta.stackexchange.com/q/311739/158100 ?
To be fair, @sonic, you only lost 22 rep from those two negatively voted FR's.
That is like, one meme joke on meta's worth of rep.
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog yeah, that's a lousy way of getting rep though. It's like saying, "if I don't invest, I'll never lose money!"
@TravisJ Not including deleted ones.
(total remains the same with deleted posts included)
19:56
Best way to earn rep on MSE? Same way you earn rep on SO: explain complicated things to people such that they can understand them.
3
You lost me at that last part...
Moral: side with us, and we'll keep you in, maybe even give you more rings. Express your opinion and have us initially disagree with it, and we'll take away your rings. Recant your opinion, and we'll give it all back.
who is "us"?
The general MSE community
No, 'us' in that example is "the people who disagree with you"
19:57
Five starred messages in a row from Shog in less than 30 minutes
@Shog9 This requires understanding complex things, and then being able to explain them. This sounds like work, do you have an easier way? ;)

@Shog9 Sometimes it is hard to judge what level of explanation the audience needs in order for them to understand.
19:58
@TravisJ No, the system only gave me back my rings because I was a wimp and recanted my opinion. If, on the other hand, I had clung to my guns on those FRs and stood by them, I would have continued to have rings taken away.
@TravisJ "sometimes"?
I usually figure I have to explain something about a dozen times before I have any real hope of being able to appeal to a broad audience
@Shog9 I'd vote for this one only if the last badge is renamed to ⬛⬛⬛⬛⬛⬛⬛⬛ (Name removed to avoid politics)
I must have told you about a time when I fought for an SO question of mine to be undeleted, even though I would stand to gain 100 rep from its deletion.
@Shog9 How do you decide where to explain it a dozen times before explaining it to the broad audience?
@TravisJ To Quack Overflow, of course

@TravisJ I don't. I just write the same things over and over again as opportunity arises. Eventually, I get slightly better at it.

Why do you think I hang out here? It gives me an opportunity to explain things badly.

@Shog9 last I checked we're sarcastic... was this intentional masochism?

Someday, I'll get together with the inclusion project's kickstarter, and people will listen to the both of us for once.
20:06
@TravisJ So...Bellagio or Ceasars? Or across the street?
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog If you really want inclusion be inclusive 1st please!
I'm usually a bit more towards the end, MGM/NYNY or Mandalay. Occasionally up at the Mirage.
@Magisch My wife had gastritis. Bland meals, no acids or proteins, lots of pepto and zantac. Took like 2 years to get over it, with flare ups taking like 3-6 months of the bland meal diet.
@πάνταῥεῖ There's a reason I clung to this username instead of changing it every 30 days like I used to.
@JohnP Not saying :P I keep a semi private online profile.
20:08
@TravisJ ::shudders:: That sounds pretty horrible
@TravisJ No worries. I get there about 4-6 times a year for martial arts tourneys, so I've stayed most of the places. Except Palms and Venetian. Haven't stayed at either one yet.
I'm really tempted to rename myself to "[Someone] the Exclusive [Something]"...
@JohnP Venetian's good, I remember staying there in 2006
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog That doesn't tell me anything. I'm quite stable regarding that.
@JohnP I haven't stayed at the palms, the venetian is nice but it is all suites.
20:10
@SomewhatMemorableName @hey was just fine :-P
@JohnP Vegas is a lot of fun though, so much to do. Are your tournaments at the MGM?
@TravisJ Yeah, I am usually only there for a weekend, so don't need a suite. I'm either competing or gambling/eating. :p
@TravisJ No, usually they are at off strip hotels/locations. It's cheaper. Our spring nationals is always over at the convention center though.
@πάνταῥεῖ "Hey the Exclusive Greeting" :O
I mean, it's vegas, you gotta gamble at some point. I like the fancy slot machines that are movie based and the no limit holdem tables (mgm and PH have the best imo)
(okay, what am I doing right now, still awake at 3am...)
20:12
@TravisJ I don't do well at NL tables, I'm much more a limit player. I like craps and roulette, never really got into slots. They are not nice to me.
@Mithrandir24601 Yeah, it looked pretty rough. I wouldn't want to go through it, I like eating whatever I feel like (for the most part).
@TravisJ I was just there for Memorial Day. It will be much hotter for you now
@Taryn 106-ish :(
@TravisJ still cooler than here in Phoenix
@JohnP Really? I can't play limit at all. I get slow boiled into losing chips, whereas with NL I can kind of snipe my way in and out of positions.
20:14
@TravisJ I'm not patient enough to hit my big hands hard. Limit protects me from my folly.
Roulette is a lot of fun, but it is kind of hard to win. Breaking even is kind of easy, but the strategy for breaking even means you never really win much.
@Taryn Yes. It's 108 where I am today :(
we're in the gross time of year
@JohnP hah! Yeah, total opposite. I'm patient enough to push the big hands, but can't manage to get anything out of the normal ones.
@Taryn The last time I went to vegas in summer it was 117, and my friend's shoes literally melted.
@TravisJ I play more hands than I should, I know this. Killer in NL play. Although perversely, I do well in tourneys.
20:16
@TravisJ we were lucky and had the mid 80s at the end of May. It wasn't bad at all
Oh, yeah, that is really nice. Scheduling didn't let us get there until July :( at least we get to see the fireworks on the 4th though
@JohnP I only tried one tourney, usually I don't have the time for them if I am in a group though
@TravisJ that will be cool to see
@TravisJ We are lucky enough to have a really good couple of cardrooms in Phx at the Indian casinos. One of them has very regular tournaments, usually at least 120+. More for the bigger weekend events.
@JohnP Oh, nice. There is a local casino where I am in California, but the poker there is pretty weak. Usually only one table, or if there is two then they still usually wont have all 10 seats filled on either.
@TravisJ Casino AZ poker room usually has 1 table of 8-16, a couple omaha, 2-4 tables of 4/8 and 3/6, couple 20-40 games, about 5-10 of spread limit (1-500, essentially NL), and some high games (40/80 mix and up). It's pretty strong, the other "big" cardroom usually only gets about 6 tables going.

@TravisJ 3-to-2 blackjack?
(FYI I don't, neither have I ever, gambled)
Oh, but they are going to be getting live craps/roulette here. (One of the parents at the studio where I train is a floor manager at a casino here).
@JohnP Nice, the digital ones just aren't the same.
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog I don't know what 3-to-2 blackjack is? They have some blackjack tables though, its more popular than poker
Easy to spend a few minutes on blackjack, poker tends to take hours
@TravisJ Means that you win the full $3 for every $2 you bet in case of a perfect win. Most casinos have switched over to a much worse (for gamblers) 6-to-5.
@TravisJ Or even a lifetime :3
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Most (if not all) Vegas casinos are all 6-5 now. Good reason to almost always take the even money on a dealer A vs your blackjack. Not worth it to push.

As far I can see you didn't earn that rep bonus at any site you're participating. Your feature request sounds just weird regarding that little of background knowledge at all — πάντα ῥεῖ 1 min ago

There's no point in having an ETag if you use version noncing on static resource urls, right?

Are replies to contact requests actually read and responded to, or should I submit a new ticket? (At least one site I've used requires me to submit a new ticket for every email.)
