elks have pale, almost heart-shaped butt - coincidence? I think not ...
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog I changed my name because it's easier with kids.
@TelautonomousKitty really? I never looked on that part of elks.
@Catija Never thought about it like that. Interesting.
@Catija So what did you think about the mystery of the Anonymous Editor back when I was doing that?
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog I was largely unaware of it until shortly before you rejoined the site.
@Catija I mean, to my knowledge, you did review some of my edits

@SensibleAlexander Sonic username suggestion, just because it seems to be becoming popular: Silver the Sensible Hedgehog
hmm.SO corp's career's page is interesting if you like reading tea leaves and entrails...
:/ Huh? What's that?
looks like the talent side's mildly expanding in europe and israel...
going to get back on the applications hamsterwheel this week soooooo
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog nah... I'm NormalHuman's stalker :)
4:28 AM
@JourneymanGeek Oh. I don't even know what half of those words mean.
@SensibleAlexander If @Norm becomes named after Blaze the Cat it would apply
@Catija mostly still on the careers and enterprise sales side
I have a feeling that a bunch of those jobs postings are there semi-permanently and they're just really picky about who they hire. So if some magical person applied, they'd give them the job but otherwise, it's not really a job opening.
but the openings are mostly in germany (I THINK they have an office there) and one in israel (which isn't a market they've been active in so far, but apparently is a great place to hire coders and security folks)
@Catija they're new
well a lot of em are
4:30 AM
I was talking about the full stack web developer.
oh
erm
that's new
also one of the places that I'm pretty sure was downsized :(
I wouldn't know. I don't stalk the page.
erm, I do? ;p
Not the people, like some people, but the page ;p
I don't even know how to get to it... the "corporate - Jobs" link in the footer just takes you to SO Jobs, not that page.
nor do I! ;p
4:31 AM
I just follow a bunch of them on Twitter...
I've had it bookmarked for years ._.
It's in the footer here: stackoverflow.com/company
So, it's in the SO footer but not the SE footer?
That's... odd?
I never go to SO ;p
Why does the SO footer have four columns, and the SE ones only three?
Me neither.
4:33 AM
Well, unless whoever's the new marketing Veep basically makes a hell of a case for turning back to SE branding, SO's kinda the "company"
That doesn't explain why the footers are different.
(which is why I'm grumpy and call it SO corp)
Different design than everything, IDK :p
Well, they experiment most of new features on SO...
Like, the deprecated-new-navbar (not the new-new-navbar)
.... I'm all for versioning the damned things ;p
So, MSE is the same as SA, so presumably it's only SO that's different.
4:37 AM
SA and MSE use the mostly standard cross network theme
But they don't even use the same terminology.
cause SO's kinda overloaded in a sense? ;p
They use the branding for jobs/jobs directory/salary etc. and apparently don't love chat at all.
Or the tour.
ya ;p
presumably most devs know what it is.
"Welcome to Stack Overflow, a Q&A site about practical programming. We're different than conventional forums... and actually other SE sites"
4:40 AM
Amusingly my cousin was using SO, but he never actually signed up
I don't know if Andy has an account but he uses it all the time.
I mean, the information being open is important, but buuuut, you basically have someone who uses the site passively.
@SensibleAlexander SO's a brand now ;p
(SO Jobs, Careers.so, SO in X, SO bath tub toys....)
Clicking "Stack Overflow" takes you to the /questions page but clicking on "STACK OVERFLOW" takes you to the general so.com page.
Well, I created my first account on SO when I decided to start answering questions...
That seems redundant.
4:42 AM
I created my SU account first ._.
Arqade.
kinda accidentally stumbled into answering things ;p
no like, even before I decided to answer stuff, lol
I was bored?
Being a entry-level Android developer at that time, I started answering Android questions... on office hour ._.
until I got over 3k, then noticing this hell a queue which is called Close Vote Review Queue
lol
I think I didn't really realise until I got the shirt ;p
5:11 AM
Questions about GitHub are on topic on SO?
5:22 AM
if not, it's gonna be your job to break it to VonC
VonC?

I wonder why Jon Skeet is a meme, but our God emeritus Jeff Atwood isn't

user310756
@TelautonomousKitty they'll get more horses for sure, but there was a month between when we came and the previous horses left - so she will be lonely then. The brush turkeys don't seem to pay her much attention, the ducks seem ok, but they come and go

Q: What should I do if someone else has already asked a question I have, but it has no answers?

Sonic the Anonymous HedgehogSuppose you had a question, and you really want a good answer that would solve your problem, but noticed it was already asked by someone else. However, no one has posted any answers. The question is technically considered "unanswered", but a lot of users who would otherwise bother to give a corre...

Also, why was it downvoted?
I didn't downvote, but the standard procedure is to put a bounty. Else, edit with big improvement to bump.
Or you can try to post the question with better quality, then the older (worse) duplicate would probably be closed to the new one instead.
@SensibleAlexander What if you're a new user and don't have enough rep to bounty? The question is intended for new users. I didn't quite know the exact cases involved, so I held off from posting a self-answer.
In other words, I do know the answer; I just wanted it to be useful for new users and also as a dupe target; I just didn't know all the cases and preferred someone else phrased it differently.
Yeah, that's the worst case, tough luck. Though, it seems a partial duplicate to the related post with score of 603 on your question.
@SensibleAlexander It's not a dupe of that. That question is completely unrelated; it asks about how to get attention for one of your own questions without a good answer. This, as well as the one I linked there, asks about the case where someone else's question doesn't have a good answer.
7:02 AM
Fair point. I don't have the answer to that question except to just post it, since the older one doesn't have an answer, so it can't be closed as dupe to that.
But perhaps... if you really want to target the new users, then you should mention that on the title/question, e.g. "As a new user without any rep, what should I do if there's a question, but already posted by other and getting no answer"
Otherwise, it's a dupe to that, regardless if it's their own question or not.
(especially "put a bounty"
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog naw, dupes don't bother me that much, so I'm not that interested in those.
@JourneymanGeek You've successfully opted out of Chaos Control pings.
@JourneymanGeek You can't put up a bounty if you're a new user without much rep.
7:26 AM
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog ehh. Its still the right way.
@JourneymanGeek Just a curious question, and also keep in mind that I'm very literal, so please don't feel "offended": I notice many of your posts are riddled with spelling and grammar errors. Why is that?
I believe he has mentioned it's dyslexia

@Shog9 If you could please review that flag
@alexolut already exists for the server error page. See its tag wiki. Please do not create a new tag for it.
7:45 PM
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog That's not a dupe. We close dupes based on the question, not the answer.
@Catija Read the question bodies carefully. They are dupes.
8:04 PM
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog If you really think that's the case, you should edit the older question so that it's more clear.
@Catija Here on MSE, we also close questions as dupes if the answers are the same but the questions are merely related. See meta.stackexchange.com/a/47635/377214
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog I think the emphasis there is particularly in the case of FAQs.
But in this case they're not just merely related, they are dupes, @Catija.
I'm gonna let you finish this discussion before handling that flag.
Eh, I think the older question just needed a title tweak. Did that, and closed as dupe.

Things have been a little surreal here lately.
That "river" was supposed to be the freeway I commute on. It took em like 2 weeks to clean it up.
Wow ...
@TravisJ so how did you commute? Surfboard?
Definitely couch surfed for a few days. After the first week they got the train open, so I had to uber -> train -> uber -> work -> uber -> train -> uber -> home for a while
But we don't have good trains like you guys do
As in comfort or timetable?
The trains in Holland are awesome, here they are like, at least 15 mins late each time, sometimes an hour.
And there is only one track.
Comfort is similar
@TravisJ that doesn't help, yeah.
@TravisJ most of the main routes are double track, some even 4 tracks, so we're privileged although we not always seem to recognize that.
8:57 PM
There are always ups and downs to different transport modes. Since there are so many different trains, connections matter a lot and if anything is late then the connections get messed up, so it is kind of understandable that people would be more sensitive to that.
We have this a train every 10 minutes between Amsterdam and Eindhoven. People still insist on getting on this train even when it is over crowded and a next train will arrive/leave in 10 minutes.
will the next train be less crowded?
@canon if you are already on the platform I'm sure you will get in. This is not Japan.
Eindhoven looks fun, didn't make it there last time I was visiting.

@rene As is, the question is a duplicate of the FAQ question about images.
So, advise him to edit it, or edit it yourself, or use your Chaos Emerald.
(I'm holding off on editing because I'd be changing the meaning of the post)
Hm. The blindness makes it distinct imo
that ^
@JourneymanGeek The question doesn't mention blindness, it just asks for how to upload images
Which is why I said edit it

ERM.
That can be edited in. Just make it explicit it's from the comments
4 mins ago, by Sonic the Anonymous Hedgehog
(I'm holding off on editing because I'd be changing the meaning of the post)
I learned from anonymously editing that a lot of reviewers disregard the edit summary, and only look at the edit itself.
11:17 PM
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog That's... not really the same thing. If there's no answers on the post, you don't have to worry about that.
@Catija Doesn't "changing the meaning of a post" mean...changing the meaning of a post?
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog that's really not a feature request. I'm not asking for something new, I'm asking for them to fix something already existent on the site. If anything, it's a bug.
@Catija But it's not a support request.
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog Adding clarifications - particularly major ones, like "I'm blind and using a screen reader"... is not changing the meaning of the post, it's clarifying it.
@Catija Also, seeing as you incorporated my suggested alt text...just because part of the edit was wrong doesn't mean the whole edit should be rejected.
11:23 PM
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog That... is exactly why an edit should be rejected. If you'd taken a second to look at the current page, you'd see that the image was representative of the old view.
I'm not going to reward you for making incorrect edits.
@Catija Ah, sorry about that...I apparently made a typo when I typed that up...my mind was playing tricks. Your rejection was correct.
@Catija In theory, yes. But in practice, I've made anonymous edits in a similar vein and they were rejected for changing the meaning.
Even when I specified in the edit summary that I was incorporating clarifications in comments.
So I came to the conclusion that incorporating clarifications in comments constitutes "changing the meaning of a post"
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog No. That's what editing is for. I can't attest for the edit rejections... I don't do a ton of reviews on MSE... but on the sites I moderate, we encourage users to add details that the OP has written in comments into the main post as many users do not read the comments. It's pointless to close something that was merely lacking details as a duplicate when it's not... and it hurts the user with an honest question.
11:39 PM
@Catija Okay, then. Definition modified. But why do you think users would reject those edits?
@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog Without a specific example, that's not possible to answer.
... and even then it may not be.
Possible reasons?
Assume there are no other reasons why the edit should be rejected
- Lazy reviewing (robo reviewing/not reading edit reason)
- Incorrect representation of information being moved
- answers being present on (old, open) questions that would be invalidated by edit
- insufficiently clear edit reason
- Tim lost his keys...
- Edit reviewers who don't actually know how to review
That's just after a few minutes of thinking.
@Catija I think that happened before the HTTPS changeover, and it's extremely difficult to get edits from that time, since the Community user's edit list is cluttered with HTTP->HTTPS edits.
