I somehow missed Juan M's answer here. If I understand it correctly, there won't be a replacement for Gabe or jmac, i.e., no CMs for ptSO or jaSO. Juan M will just have to manage those sites in addition to esSO.

Yes, when Juan once posted on ptSO Meta in Spanish, it was received without enthusiasm and with a suggestion that posting in English would be better. Don't know how he manages Japanese, there is probably a translator available.

but there's enough similarities in french and english that you can basically code switch once you learnt enough of the either by slightly mangling words.

Someone who speaks English but no French or Dutch might recognize a few words but will otherwise be completely unable to understand anything... there are also lots of false friends... but most people who speak Spanish can at least understand most of what's said in Portuguese.

and least on a mature site, there's relatively little that needs urgent CM intervention

Maybe more than three mods would be helpful... but one of them lives in the US, so should be pretty fluent in English... so could ask for help from the English speaking CMs.

Meanwhile Nicolas has the relative luxury of having just 1 site to manage (well 1.05 sites counting Русский язык). Posted some year-end stats: pageviews on ruSO went from 26M in 2016 to 35M in 2017.
