@ArtOfCode heh, busted. Area 51 for the rescue. LOL. — Shadow Wizard 47 mins ago
I remember LanguageLog and how those linguists kept saying ''New untold sentences are being created everyday''.
The only recent downvoted posts are from two confused friends.
jrh
jrh
Quick question, is it by design that downvotes remove rep on this site? I can't seem to downvote posts (i.e., to indicate disagreement) anymore.
And only -9.
jrh
jrh
This is kind of weird because other meta sites don't seem to work this way.
@jrh Downvotes on answers?
Yeah.
jrh
jrh
yeah
12:25
Yeah
Yes
And per site meta don't work this way, yes.
jrh
jrh
What's the reasoning behind DV's affecting rep, if I may ask?
Now that has a mysterious reason.
which means I have no idea.
jrh
jrh
If DV's on meta represent disagreement, is there a good reason for only allowing me to disagree a few times before proposing stuff?
I guess they were too meh to make sure the meta.SE system is like the per site metas.
There have been proposals to change this, esp. after the highly downvoted PSA.
jrh
jrh
I mean I guess I can post Meta Q/A but I usually find good Q and A already there
on the meta topics I'm interested in I mean
IMO it's very silly to only let people DV 4 times
12:29
On meta.SE I found out that you never see the need to post, but if you want to have some fun, it's fun to answer a ''y me get downrates'' and gain some rep if it doesn't get deleted.
jrh
jrh
alternatively another fix might be to make it so that there's not a 100 rep limit for downvoting?
I mean I can't even DV questions now
@jrh 125. Now it's 100?
jrh
jrh
yeah
let me get a screenshot
Oh, that's interesting
So they did . . . do something.
@jrh Well, meta veterans can make up a buttload of philosophical reasons for this, and they have already done something, so I don't think it will be like per site metas any time soon.
For instance, I could argue that once you're made to get around a bit and post something, you'll have a better idea about what to and not to disagree with.
12:34
Yah saw it.
That's 125 rep in other sites.
jrh
jrh
It's probably intentional but I still don't really see the benefit, I've been reading SE sites for a couple years now.
oh well. If I would've known I would have probably saved the DVs for something more important
It's easy to get rep here though.
Too easy.
You just have to do it. Post something.
It's easy to post answers on discussions.
jrh
jrh
I'll keep that in mind, I have nothing worth posting ATM
repeat answers tend to get DVs on other sites
Well, you can stick around and see some interesting discussions pop up everyday
Answering which only requires having stuck around for a while.

Another year has ended, and with that it's time to put all the hats back in their boxes, Winter Bash 2016 has come to an end! Over past three weeks, we have had ups and downs (err bugs) with hats, but overall it was a massive success. It appeared that there was fun to be had, and, wow, the hats looked hat-tastic on everyone.

@bluefeet Hello. Actually I wanted to start a room linked in my profile to get and give help on How SE works, help and suggest etc. But had got discouraged when found no one was using them that's why I had written that. @zaq what's wrong with Atlassian?
@Pandya her point is that if you won't maintain the room, there's no point to unfreeze it as it would just auto freeze again.

@ShadowWizard I was not aware with 24 hour's limit. Hmm... then I'll consider it (unfreezing) in future. Going to sleep. Good-bye!
18:49
I don't think it's 24 hours. I think there's a process that sweeps rooms once daily, if no activity, freezes or deletes as appropriate.
Hey, welcome to the Tavern Mick
@M.A.R. Hi, there. What is this place, and more importantly, where is this place?
@Mick This is the main chat for Meta StackExchange, which is like a mother meta.
Issues that concern more than one SE site can be discussed here.
@M.A.R. Cool! I'll add it to my ever-expanding list of SE bookmarks. ;-)

@rene oooh popcorn. Now I want some

Oh, dude, cold dead hands are an indication of some serious problem.
Go see a canonoptrist.
@canon that was the only point I got out of that post ...
@Bart you're welcome
@rene Exactly. Sure, the sentiment should be applied broadly... but he was just irritated at having to deal with it so he attacked it directly.
I guess we witnessed a Shogian approach to a problem
Works for me
Years ago, I had trouble maintaining civility in a conversation with an apartheid supporter. You can't just make yourself respect a person or his position. Most of the time, the best I can do is fake it or excuse myself from the conversation.
20:09
@rene wait... oh... the gravatar stuff threw me off. I also wanted to close as dupe of this one instead:

Q: Someone contacted me by email but my email is not public

SegevLast week I got an email to my email address saying "I saw on Stack Overflow that you were interested in.." and the content of the question I asked. The email suggested I'll star a bug \ feature request on chromium website. The request is totally legit and I don't mind it at all, my main concern ...

@ShadowWizard sure, sure, sure. Just admit you abused your hammer ;)
The other one was copied too, guess I didn't check when pasting, just had to go :(
So @rene you think the above is proper dupe? It doesn't really ask how to report though, just how it happened
(and answers reveal it's due to Gravatar)
@ShadowWizard no, it is not the correct dupe
The problem is not: How did they get my email. The question is: what should I do when I'm contacted on email address only used for SE.

@canon too obvious :D
hah
When I was at school nobody had any "nickname", teacher called everyone by their real, actual, name.
Dunno how it is these days in my country.
If they call you by number you know you're not at school anymore
user315433
Not sure what nicknames mean in bjb's class, I was thinking about cases like "David Jonathan" being in fact Jon, or perhaps "J.D."

user315433
Because the script kept timing out and it was easiest to kill it?
@zaq don't remember anymore
It was waffles' project, and he left a few months earlier... So without anyone to care for it, I expect it rotted pretty fast
Sorta thing that tends to need regular care.
user315433
I suppose pinging all links in SO answers doesn't scale well.
yeah, that was part of it - but they had that solved, I think, or at least scaling reasonably well
I do recall there being a lot of headaches w/ links that redirected (but used the wrong code), sites that required logins, intermittent servers, etc.
So a site would start timing out for a bit at the wrong time & a bunch of folks would get notifications, then it'd be back up by the time they went to check
I think there was some logic to only notify if a link was broken for a while, but... Again, don't really remember anymore
user315433
Yeah, looks like a headache. But maybe doable if notifications are limited to hard-and-fast 404s.
