Q: Warlords of Documentation: Your Quest(ions Answered)

Kevin MontroseA couple of weeks ago we came to meta with a proposed expansion of Stack Overflow: Documentation. The response has been very encouraging: 2,400+ upvotes and even more signups for the beta. You guys also asked a ton of questions. Some of them we were already kicking around internally, but weren’t...

@Shog9 If I can find a dupe, ok.
user310756
not tags, documentation
user310756
are we allowed to one box in here?
NO! ....
I'm kidding...
user310756
22:01
you had me going for a minute!... :D
Yep, I know and I love it ;)
user310756
I

user310756
I'll return the favour ;)
user310756
well I did with my gratuitous plug of chess SE :D
22:03
I'm not sure if I'm actively ignored but I still wonder what the answer is to this question:
12 mins ago, by rene
@Shog9 does the triage algorithm detect the possibility of the question being a dupe?
@Sam FWIW, 6K answers in the past year posted to already-closed questions. That's about... 0.1% of answers, or 3% of answers posted to closed questions.
user310756
@rene I think he's probably multi tasking like the dickens
@rene I ignore you... wait...
I'm great at ignoring people
@rene no. Triage is not really designed for duplicates.
user310756
22:04
@Shog9 what about the bot idea???
user310756
Mimi the mimic (dupe bot)?
I could envision a triage-like system for dups, but quite honestly there's probably an easier way.
user310756
@Shog9 a bot
Sam
Sam
@Shog9 Oh, cool. Stats, thanks. But I fear more people could latch onto this though. :/
@MsYvette see what you can come up with for matching algorithms
22:05
@Shog9 So go be productive? meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/262077/… ;)
@Sam there has to be an easier way to shoot yourself in the foot
user310756
@Sam Shog wants us to make a bot :D give an inch... runs
user310756
@Shog9 and where do I bring these algorithms?
algorithm first. Bot comes second. An inaccurate bot is just an annoyance.
Sam
Sam
@MsYvette Wait, what? :D
An algo to find dupes?
22:06
The spam detector works because SPAM can be modeled rather easily around patterns.
user310756
also can we have an increased vote somewhere, as in the SOCVR we run out of votes, and then we will all be sitting in there sobbing, while we see all the dupes get answered. and drinking vodka
How can a duplicate target be matched against a random post?
user310756
@rene yes, which means there would need to be carefully grouped keywords for each post
Sam
Sam
@rene NLP + some machine learning
That was why I asked about the triage algorithm
user310756
22:08
not easily, but for null reference exception.. quite easily.. more complex posts == more work, and maybe we don't want to close them anyway
Sam
Sam
I've actually been working on something similar for matching LQ posts.
user310756
@rene this is to alert people quickly so it can be closed before being answered... I think @Shog9 needs to consider the idea of having a group of people who can have an extra vote on these dupe targets, maybe silver badges
So what exactly is the plan for triage, @Shog? Wasn't there a plan once for incorporating LQRQ and First Posts/Late Answers into it somehow, with first posts not being visible until approved by Triage and Unsalvageable posts being hidden somehow?
user310756
@Sam really?
user310756
a bot?
Sam
Sam
22:09
@MsYvette Yes, Pham.
user310756
Shall we call him Sham?
user310756
oh Pham, soz
user310756
Ok let's go to Ministry for Hats
Sam
Sam
@MsYvette Which is why we switched to Nor for Closey V2.
@bjb568 it's supposed to be hiding things on the homepage
Which it may or may not be doing, depending on your view settings. But probably.
user310756
22:10
@Sam that stalker! :D
You have a test set. We can run each of the 2000+ posts against the null reference post and see if it generates enough positives and enough false positives on random posts.
user245368
Has SE ever considered open sourcing parts of their system? I bet some of the geniuses on SO could maybe help with some of the backlog of issues or help with catching spam.

user310756
@rene ok, I'm going to do that now...
You guys could start by finding out how SE's autosearch algorithm works. It is usually very good about suggesting duplicates as you type.
user310756
22:11
where do you want me to bring it.. SOCVR?
No, in the test room please
user310756
@JasonC good idea, so you're on the team with us then? :D
user310756
@rene ah k
user245368
@JasonC It is. I found a post through the autosearch just when I was about to click Post after spending hours on the web looking for an answer.
No. I'm just giving reasonable ideas. I don't have time for this, lol.
user310756
22:12
I'm going will see you in test room
user310756
@JasonC I know, I'm teasing :D
Sam
Sam
@Shog9 I'd seriously wouldn't mind putting something together for this.
But just don't forget there's a great algorithm lurking very close to you already.
Perhaps you could even make ajax requests to the find-as-you-type endpoint. @MsYvette
@JasonC title search. Shocking how ignoring all the posts with crappy titles gets you to the one good question on the topic so often...
user245368
Sorry for the question, but it seems I jumped in kind of late. What type of bot in particular are you considering developing?
user245368
22:16
@Shog9 Is it only title search? I've seen the suggestions change as I type in the body too.
@Hosch250 there's a different search for that, IIRC
@Hosch250 A bot to analyze the text of all incoming support emails then, from that, generate meta announcements of dubious ideas. It's to replace @shog.
user245368
LOL, that sounds interesting.
user245368
@Shog9 That must be the one I was thinking of.
@JasonC You forgot the kicking @bjb at random intervals feature
22:30
@Shog9 I wouldn't have guessed.
@bjb568 none of those are new questions, and it's unlikely most of them were in triage to begin with. I'll note that you can test this yourself now since that information is in the timeline view...
Put them all in Triage then…
you volunteering to triage them?
'cause... There's like 90-some posts in there right now
If you give me a binding vote, I will do 200 questions per day for the next year.
earn it
22:35
sure sure, popularity contests, totally my strong suit
work hard and respect will follow
Look, I'm taking 9 classes of somewhat high caliber right now (in addition to working on DevDoodle, reading software development stuff, learning about colleges, writing and practicing music, having a life, etc.), and I get plenty of respect. Not sure where imaginary internet rep points play a part in that…
Yeah, and your work on DevDoodle earns you my respect.
If you want a binding vote, work hard toward earning it. If you want a diamond, work hard and you'll earn the respect of the community
Rep means squat if the community hates you
Well, the community largely votes on rep (and candidate score, which is mostly based on rep).

what matters depend on what you want in your life :p

How was this just closed 3 hours ago?

Q: How do you remember the LESS THAN and GREATER THAN operators?

sshowI have been programming for over 5 years now, and still can't seem to understand, nor remember, what is less than, and what is greater than (< and >, respectively). I tend to debug twice every time I need to use this in a conditional, because I almost never get this right. Any guides to remember...

fell through the cracks I guess.
