This is a list of individuals and organizations noteworthy for engaging in bulk electronic spamming, either on their own behalf or on behalf of others. It is not a list of all spammers, only those whose actions have attracted substantial independent attention. Shane Atkinson, who was named in an interview by The New Zealand Herald as the man behind an operation sending out 100 million emails per day in 2003, who claimed (and appeared) to honor unsubscribe requests, and who claimed to be giving up spamming shortly after the interview. His brother Lance was ordered to pay $2 million to U.S. ...
That needs a "This page is incomplete" banner
user202362
The not so short list of spammers even have their own entries on the wikipedia, amazing!
Can we add those big facebook content-stealers to the list?
01:35
> Users who received the Onion Knight hat posted questions that received at least three anonymous feedback pseudo-upvotes from visitors who did not have full voting privileges on the site. There ended up being 369 Onion Knight hats, awarded to 361 distinct users.
... I never would have guessed that.
Especially because anonymous feedback is like the forgotten child of votes.
@pops wow! nice!
Reminds you just how many arbitrary rules/features SE has.
I don't understand how that is linked to Onion Knight as a concept.
Because anonymous pseudovotes make us cry? Because layers?
01:41
> but it probably should have done a callback to 2009 and prodded them to do so "as a programmer." The hat was meant to make people think of Tor (now a proper name of its own, but originally an acronym standing for The Onion Router), and evoke the concept of anonymity.
(This is from a yet-to-be merged blog post by the way, github.com/StackPops/stack-blog/blob/patch-6/_posts/…)
What is the 2009 callback to "as a programmer"?
I'm... not sure.
I am disappoint.
My deepest apologies. ;)
It sounds like something I remember reading about Programmers? or SO? about how do I something about a boat 'as a programmer'.
I still don't know what that has to do with Tor though.
It was some meme or something.

@KitZ.Fox The boat programming question?
88
A: What is the boat programming meme about?

XMLbogjjnguy's answer captures the part about the history of the meme, but I don't think he captures why it became a meme and what the meme represents. Basically, the boat-programming question was at the core of what it meant for a question to be programming related. At the time, SO had a lot of quest...

That... still doesn't make a ton of sense.
yeah...
Yeah. That's what I was thinking. So it must be something else? Oh. Probably just that Tor was a thing in 2009.
Think about onions as a programmer. And Tor = The Onion Router.
@KitZ.Fox I guess. It was created in 2002, so... shrug
02:09
Not think about onions "as a programmer" which is why I was confused thinking it was about a meme.

Q: Introducing the Developer Story

bluefeet TL;DR; We're replacing CVs with something you can use even if you aren't currently looking for a job. Update (Jan 4): added an FAQ section to address some common questions & concerns We've had a lot of announcements lately about changes to Stack Overflow, including the addition...

It has a negative vote count
@hichris123 Project began in 2009.
@Quill Aww, poor bluefeet.
@KitZ.Fox ah.
@hichris123 Hmm. Or something to do with it started in 2009.
> The anonymizing relay monitor (arm) is a command-line status monitor written in Python for Tor.
That was the 2009 project.
[ SmokeDetector ] Blacklisted user: Where can I buy RF wireless remote control product? by Katherine on electronics.stackexchange.com (@PeterJ)
02:18
In 2009 on SO there was a sizable group of people who were of the opinion that anything should be on topic as long as you asked it in the context of programming or being a programmer.
Leading to things like the infamous boat programming question.
My blog joke is just that I expected tech people to see the word onion and immediately think of Tor, and then from that, start thinking about anonymity.
Yeah, after we discovered it, we thought it was for logging in with Tor...
we didn't get that far
It's more obvious in the other direction (anonymity online, to Tor, to onions). But I figured it was linked enough to be a valid hint. And they can't all be easy.
Is that the first time no one has figured one out?
Uh. The first time there has been a hat that no one correctly guessed the criteria for?
@pops what was the difference between the blue and white flip flop hats?
As far as I know, but I'm not sure about earlier years.
I posted that in the other room yesterday... on mobile now, hard to search.
02:28
@Quill That was genius.
Take your network ID, search the image of the dress for that number bit, if it's 0 then one way, 1 the other.
Or something like that.
If I had three posts, A, B and C
and I marked A as a duplicate of B (gold badge)
but then I marked B as a duplicate of C (gold badge)
Would A go to C, or to B?
B. That's an edge case we don't check for, at least the last time I looked.
Okay, thanks
02:44
Onion Knight. Clever...
For those who aren't really concerned about their privacy (e.g. me), I wouldn't guess it's Tor.
Instead, the resemblance to job name on Final Fantasy game makes it out of the way.
!!/coffee
@AndrewT. brews coffee for @AndrewT.
It was supposed to be funny... I didn't think people would take it so literally.
when we discovered a hat it was basically try everything
I'm off to work on knitting a hat. Later!
