I agree it sucks, stopped using this in the app.
The app is useful to get instant notifications when not in front of computer and read them, as for everything else... better use a browser.
iOS app is much better, and get much more dev time.
Myeah, I stopped using the Android app quite some time ago. I couldn't get used to it

@AndrewT. well, he's all alone. working both as the mobile apps group leader and the sole android app developer - the bugs keep piling, and nobody is there to fix them.
Brian is doing excellent work and fixing tons of stuff, on the other hand, they'll probably close the app if and when he decides to move on from SE. :D

@chmod711telkitty there are plenty of reasons why someone would want to spam SE.

Maybe they're testing their new spamming tools.
user163250
Are maybe they just want to troll.
user163250

@rene may I ask you an SQL Server question? Let me know if I should go do more research or ask a question on SO or DBA.SE.
user163250
I'm trying to insert approximately 40 million rows into a mapping table with two foreign keys used as the primary key.
[ SmokeDetector ] Link at end of body, pattern-matching website in body: Synapsyl Reviews - Viagra for the BRAIN? by markcaldwell on drupal.stackexchange.com
user163250
I'm doing the insert from a C# console program I wrote, using some .NET classes for doing the insert.
user163250
The inserts occur in batches of about 15,000 rows (configurable of course).
user163250
The problem is that the inserts start to slow down to the point where I eventually hit a connection timeout exception from SQL Server.
user163250
10:29
There's only one clustered index on the table, using the primary key I already described.
user163250
I also noticed that SQL Server starts maxing out my dev box memory after several hundred batches.
user163250
Is that normal? I'm wondering if I'm leaking memory from not closing server connections properly or something.
user163250
The console program seems to use bounded, constant memory, so the client seems to be okay, it's just SQL Server that's eating it up unboundedly.
I can't remember how to change it but SQL/Server has two memory modes - a server mode that tries to use all available memory (I think the default) and another mode (maybe workstation?) that's more conservative.
user163250
@PeterJ I figured there might be a setting for that. I'll definitely look into that, because I don't want SQL Server to be eating up all of my available memory on my dev box, for sure.
10:34
Just looked and maybe it's an install option, but under memory settings for the server instance you can specify a maximum and on my server it looks like it's defaulted to 2147483647 MB (!)
user163250
Um.
user163250
That's, like, 2000+ TB.
user163250
What do you use for a dev box, a fire-breathing dragon?
Yes a bit more than my little 1U rack server has lol. Although the databases I use are only a few GB here and there so they do fit in memory so I don't have that problem.
On my dev machine just checked and the limit shows the same, but that's only SQL Express so has the 10GB database size limit anyway.

10:40
@Cupcake are you cleaning up after you are done the insert?
user163250
@chmod711telkitty the class I'm using to write is wrapped in a using statement, so I assume that it is.
user202362
Meaning, are you freeing up the memory after you no longer need them?
One other thing probably worth checking is that your insert batches are wrapped in a begin / end transaction on the connection, presumably the transaction logs might get pretty big if it tries to do it in a single transaction.
user163250
@chmod711telkitty The .NET runtime should be freeing up the memory for me as long as I wrap the class instantiation in a using statement, like
user163250
using (var sbc = new SqlBulkCopy(connection))
{
    sbc.DestinationTableName = "MappingTabe";
    sbc.WriteToServer(mappingTable);
}
user163250
10:43
I'm wondering if maybe I'm not cleaning up the connection object properly somewhere else though.
user163250
@PeterJ hmm, something else to check into, thanks.

@Cupcake well, you must Dispose the connection instance somewhere as well, yes
user163250
@ShadowWizard I checked, I have it wrapped in its own using statement too. I'm going to look into making sure I'm actually using multiple transactions instead of one gigantic one, as PeterJ suggested.
@Cupcake yeah, transactions can cause problems, good luck with that! :)
user202362
10:59
Doh, you did say 'The console program seems to use bounded, constant memory'.
user163250
@ShadowWizard thanks!
user163250
@chmod711telkitty yeah, it's SQL Server that's blowing up in memory usage.
user163250
Not the console client program.
user163250
I figured I might be running out of available server connections from a connection pool (or something like that) if I didn't dispose of them properly in the client though.

@Cupcake what you're seeing is probably the extra work the db engine has to perform to guarantee the correctness of data. Due to a lot of data being written to the LOG instead of DATA it needs to keep track of more data/needs to read more files. Keep in mind that Sql is optimized for OLTP not batch processing. If you are able to switch the transaction logging mode to minimal: msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms190422.aspx
but make sure to switch back to simple/full after the import and make a backup

Rapeseed (Brassica napus), also known as rape, oilseed rape, rapa, rappi, rapaseed, (and, in the case of one particular group of cultivars, canola), is a bright-yellow flowering member of the family Brassicaceae (mustard or cabbage family), (油菜: Mandarin Pinyin yóucài; Cantonese:yau choy) consumed in China and Southern Africa as a vegetable. The name derives from the Latin for turnip, rāpa or rāpum, and is first recorded in English at the end of the 14th century. Older writers usually distinguished the turnip and rape by the adjectives 'round' and 'long' (-'rooted'), respectively. Rutabagas, Brassica...
