is there a Stack Exchange that tells me how to fix my lawnmower? Calling it a “motor vehicle” is a stretch.

DIY?

Hrm I don't suppose there's any good way to compress audio, pictures, and video?

@hichris123 mp4?

@2mkgz cool. Even a gas-powered toothbrush counts then
@hichris123 where have you been since 1980?

5:04 PM
I've only been alive for around half that time, so...

you live in the Era of Compressed Audio, Pictures, and Video

@Unihedron I could try re-encoding the videos...

encoding is good
it wastes computation power and time cuz aint nobody got time for that :D

@yellowantphil Well, I have some avi's, some bmp's, some mov's...

@hichris123 any compression should work OK on an uncompressed format, I would think.
the cool kids use xz

will Roomba delete this? stackoverflow.com/q/24044802/792066

no, since it has an accepted answer.

@hichris123 I don’t know how you’re calculating compression ratios, but I have a FLAC file that is 60% of the original WAV file. I wouldn’t expect a better lossless compression than that for most music.

I could have flagged some of them outside of triage

"I've copy-n-pasted together a bunch of code and it don't work" -> 3 out of 5 questions on the android tag. And I'm pretty sure we could say the same for quite a few more high traffic tags. — 2Dee 2 days ago
Sadly yeah.

the best questions are the ones that ask for more code that they can copy and paste

Go take a look at the php tag, it's worse than android..

eh. depends on the day.

the flagging history doesn’t show disputed spam flags

@yellowantphil it... does

5:35 PM
@hichris123 People should post more along the lines of "I've put together some code, but it gives me this error when I run it. Here is the code section that causes the problem. I use version X.X of module Y, for programming language Z. Where did I go wrong, and how do I fix it?"

@Braiam ^ my other spam flag was disputed

@JonasCz I flagged something as spam in triage, and when the triage closed it was disputed

Q: Disputed flags count for spam, offensive and comments flags missing in flagging history

AzikIn the flag summary page, the flagging history shows the disputed flags count for moderator attention flags but not for spam, offensive and comments flags. I request the community to show that count for those flag types too.

@JonasCz no

I misidentified that question as spam, so it’s a good thing it didn’t make its way to a mod

A: Missing entry in flagging history

animusonYou have one spam flag that was dismissed as disputed. Unfortunately there is no counter for disputed flags on spam and offensive at the moment. It's pretty rare that those flags get marked in such a way. The moderator that reviewed the flag opted to clear the spam/offensive flags from the post,...

@ASCIIThenANSI The problem is a lot of these "programmers" don't understand the basic concepts of programming. I myself fell into this category when I first joined SO. Someone in this category needs more help than "here's what's wrong with your code".

Well then.
227 = 210 + 4 = 214
52 = 47 + 1 = 48
Math is fun.

Hi all! Are there any rules against leaving bad questions open, so I can quote them? I've noticed a user on RU.SO who constantly disagrees with others in the review queue: leaves bad questions open, votes for opening bad questions etc. He votes against closing in like 90% of cases. I've reported this in RU.SO's chat, but the only moderator who was there didn't care and other users were mostly against me.
"It's just his opinion!", "There're no rules against disagreeing with everyone else!", "Freedom of speech!" and other crazy phrases like this. So what I really need is meta post or FAQ page or something else which says that reviews are for checking whether posts follow rules, not for expressing opinion about rules. Are there any?

5:46 PM
@Athari are those questions really outside the scope of the site? maybe you would want to address that

@Athari If the community leaves quality at bay, they will pay.

@Braiam The user voted against closing a question like "I've downloaded NT 4.0 from torrents, how do I compile it?"

@Athari but the rest vote the same way?

@Braiam Others voted to close it, of course. But they don't see anything wrong with "another opinion".

@Athari well, luckily he doesn't know how the edit bottom works ;)

5:52 PM
I've tried saying that this user would have been review-banned on SO thanks to failed review audits, but others said there're no review audits on RU.SO (it's in beta), so rules from review audits don't apply. :-/

@Athari well, if you tried to get in touch with him, explaining why those questions are bad (citing FAQ, site scope, etc.) and that didn't work, the next step would be gathering information about egregious reviews and pass along that into a moderator flag.

@Braiam And that user already posted a discussion on meta ("Why is everyone closing so many opinion based posts?" or something like this) and people there expressed their opinions, mostly that rules are rules.

@hichris123 Are you running it on some third-party host?

@JasonC @Undo's running it on an EC2 server.

@hichris123 I could set up a temporary server here tomorrow maybe and run it until the problem happens, if that would help keep an eye on it.
I should have an old laptop laying around somewhere.

@JasonC I don't know if that would catch it. It only seems to happen once in a blue moon (every month or so)... and even then, it'd probably just continue on like nothing happened.

Can you build a hacky CPU usage monitor into it that makes it dump stack traces when it goes above a threshold?

@JasonC I think @Undo was looking at that.

10:55 PM
Although, $10 says adding a CPU monitor will inexplicably stop the problem from happening, because the universe hates programmers.

and when did Smokey come back?

Oh, huh. Wiki only has the "head gear" definition for "chaperon".

@JasonC ಠ_ಠ

Hrm... @yellowantphil SCOWL has it as a variant, probably too high a word level though.

@yellowantphil Few minutes ago

> Both are found in dictionaries, but some commentators point out that the chaperone spelling is an incorrect Anglicization of a French word. Someone mistakenly thought that an -e- was needed at the end of the word to make it feminine. So it’s probably better to give preference to chaperon.

@yellowantphil chaperon /ˈʃæpərɒn/, /-ɔːn/, /-oʊn/. Also 6–7 chapperon, 7 chapron, chapperoon, shaparoon, shaparowne, shabbaron, 7–9 chaperoon. Etymology: a. Fr. chaperon hood, a kind of dim. deriv. of chape cope, cape (cf. moucheron gnat, f. mouche fly); also used in sense 3 (in which English writers often erroneously spell it chaperone, app. under the supposition that it requires a fem. termination).
