Q: Why do we have an edit grace period?

Kirk WollAs I see it the purpose of the "grace period" (the period of time when you may edit your question/answer without said edit showing up in the reivision history) is to either: Reduce the clutter in the SO database so multiple minor edits don't show up as "expensive" versions. Give the OP an oppor...

^ I want to answer that and describe why I think it's useful, but the OP is being a bit disrespectful to those who disagree with him (@bluet).
Just answer, you can't lose rep on meta!
@bluet Yes, but I'd rather not get into a comment-battle.
I think the better question is, why are you trying to install Windows 98? — nhinkle ♦ 8 mins ago
@AstroCB takes two people to argue.
..
02:59
not unless you do a self-argue
> So it’s just a matter of coaxing a little kid.
My point is, if you don't want to answer cause you hate participating in comment wars, you can still answer. just don't comment-war.
@Frank Very true.
I'm extremely dubious of your morals basis
3
A: Why do we have an edit grace period?

Shog9It's #2. The UI simplification is a nice bonus - I've yet to see a revision history for trivial edits that wasn't unbearably frustrating - but #2 was the original design goal for this feature, and was considered critically important even in the very, very early days. Why? Because these mistakes ...

And children can be special, right?
> This means that as apps try to cooperate and share the CPU, they don't necessarily have to, and some app or browser window may use up all of the CPU, throwing off the timing for the controller software. That may not end well. This is in fact a bandsaw.

@JonSkeet because this is only in the grace period, people reading the page will see the banner, "an edit has been made to this post; click to load", even when there is no record left. I use it myself, when I'm like, "Did I really post thay instead of that?", I fix it, then see another. Without the grace period, I'd be bumping my post to the top again and again. I suppose you could say 'just be more careful', but the thing is, you often don't catch something til after you post. — J. Musser 4 mins ago

There are 6 recently posted almost identical answers to 6 questions on the [Notepad++] tag. All posted by user stackoverflow.com/users/3911264/mystupidstory . As far as I can see the 6 answers differ only in the whitespace and newlines before and after curly (ie { and }) braces. I believe there is an automatic check for duplicate answers, but due to whitespace differences it might not catch these. What should be done about this sort of duplication?

Say @Shog9 (or anyone team-side), if you have some time at all, could you have a look at my question? meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/284271/… Is what is being said there what you guys would have said? Anything to add. Because now I see a comment like meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/285754/… and I still don't know what the deal is
@Bart Is this whole thing a technical issue, or a policy decision?
More policy and "is that the advice you want to be handing out?".
It is seemingly technically also somewhat unclear (how does the process work if you advise it) but that's not my main concern
@Bart Or is it a policy decision created by a technical issue? (ala It's really hard to PREVENT new accounts, so lets just say that they can do it, if they want to.)
17:11
@LynnCrumbling yet there is a moderator in a comment warning a user about creating new accounts. So what's going on? And as far as I know it's not really "new" accounts as such, but deleting your existing one and then creating a new one with the same underlying ID
yeah.. +1 on the question.
@Bart Really makes you wonder what the hell the point of the ban is, then.
@LynnCrumbling exactly. If you're going to limit them anyway, just don't ban.
"We're banning you...! ...but only if you don't feel like creating a new account."
So all in all I'm confused. But that's more or less a permanent state anyway.
