Sorry, mods - I've been slacking in my comment flagging. I'll get right back on it!

Flagged this answer for being poor quality (links to docs). My flag got disputed; are these really acceptable?

A: Java: Creating object with String input of the object's name

immibisYou can do it with reflection using Class.getMethod and Method.invoke. Creating an Animal class is really the cleanest way, though. What stops you from doing that?

It is an answer. A bad, low quality answer, but it is an attempt to answer the question.
Reserve "Not an answer" to things like "Me too", follow on questions and such.

Should I have flagged it differently (very low quality?) or not at all?

VLQ is appropriate. A downvote even more so.

Ah, that's probably why I flagged as 'Not an answer': you can't flag for 'Very low Quality' once it's been upvoted. I assume a custom flag is advised then?

Might as well be, yes. But those require moderators to look at, which can take time.

Alright, thanks for clarifying

no problem

would anyone get pissed off if the Community user was removed :p? all the reversed downvotes (~319K)

4:09 PM
Just noticed something I found a bit strange. I was serially downvoted yesterday and had it reversed 13 hours ago, yet on the applicable posts (and my profile) it still says the score after taking the downvote into account, but when I click to view the upvotes / downvotes, it shows it correctly, then, when refreshing, it's correct again.
It was on a score of 15 (+15/-0), downvoted by 1 (and reversed). Just now it showed a score of 14, when clicking to view the up/downvotes, it shows +15/-0, then refreshing makes it show a score of 15 again.

UndoThe Careers .ico is kinda big. I know that you guys are really proud of Careers (and rightly so), but this elevating it so far above all your normal sites isn't right. I call site discrimination!

4:47 PM
@Oded Are you at liberty to describe what the "certain circumstances" are? I'd like to adjust Data Explorer accordingly if it makes sense.

5:03 PM
@TimStone IIRC, we do that with accounts that don't have a gravatar account (I suppose those that the user has not entered a gravatar address themselves)

Ah, okay.

In such cases, we add a salt and call it an "identicon"

Gotcha. Thanks! :)

No problem :)

> The other issue here is that Github and Stack Exchange are creating accounts for people on Gravatar without asking users first. Seems I have a Gravatar account despite never going to the site or choosing an avatar image for my Github account. Not particularly happy about that.
Am I the only one who thinks that this comment is nonsense?

5:21 PM
It'd be an easy mistake to make, if we're assigning him an Identicon.

@ThiefMaster No, I think I said as much at the time when I read that some months ago.

239 not constructive comment flags? o.o Oh my.

@animuson Only... a few of those are mine :)

The entire flag queue is at 950 right now.

Hmm... if I flagged 50 link-onlys.... I could push it to 1000!

It's not helping that I'm spending my time right now playing Toy Story Mania! :P

Bad animuson! Go handle a bunch of flags! We elected you so that you would spend the rest of your waking hours ploughing through bad posts, pushing big red buttons!

6:42 PM
Actually, if I go through the not constructive comment flags, I'll just end up declining a vast majority of them.
No big red button needed.

Soo... the comment flags are both correct and not correct at the same time. You'll never know unless you go through them :D

7:00 PM
Where are all these flags coming from?? I'm handling them and the count just keeps increasing. O.O

@animuson The VLQ flags?
whistles
Keyboard shortcuts FTW!
I only have 60 left.

I rarely look at VLQ flags. I just let them fall into LQP.

Well... do the VLQ flags contribute to the count?

Yes. But there's only 60 of those...

Huh.

7:02 PM
There's 180 not an answer flags.

I have 62 waiting for review.

If only I had a rep point for every helpful flag...

7:22 PM
just saw a huge spike in link-only answers in the VLQ queue
was there something going on?

It's @Undo's fault.

@DennisMeng Whistles

@DennisMeng He cast a boat-load of VLQ flags that all just hit the review queues.

just wondering

I have one hundred flags to burn through... plus some special searches... plus keyboard shortcuts.
So what did I do? Bump the VLQ review queue to 98 or something?
Darnit, someone's been a little trigger happy on the looks good button. @animuson, hammer please:

The flags have to be active for at least 15 minutes before they hit the queue, so there will always be a delay numbers-wise.

i see a 53, and i have my 20 already for the day
well, looks like someone is going through them

Yeah, the history is now flooded with Recommend Deletion events.

This is crazy.
The power of community moderation: No match for a guy with keyboard shortcuts.
Would it be breaking the rules to make a sockpuppet, legitimately get 15 rep, and cast flags with it?

Oh woops, I guess I went over 20. :P

@animuson You're not supposed to?

7:43 PM
shrugs People always complain when Bill goes over 40 in Close Votes, so I tend to just avoid doing that.

You don't notice 10k privs until you don't have them :(
I've gotten so use to being able to see global review history on Meta and a few beta sites that it surprises me on SO.
Lol:

A: Why did a link-only answer get 3 upvotes?

gnatIn the face of like 24,000 link-only answers with positive score spread over at SO, these most likely look okay for regular users. Don't let the prevailing attitude here at MSO trick you into thinking that wider SO audience shares it. As pointed in the answer linked above, Canonical meta pos...

@gnat Sad but true.

8:11 PM
Do lots of people really complain about mods surpassing the review caps @animuson? I only saw the one Meta post, and it got downvoted...hard.
The one about Bill's "antics."

Mods just want to avoid it all in the first place, methinks.

I've read something like that: Who does the most reviews? And Bill showed that he can bypass the limit.
who cares?

Wow, UPS is really strict about sticking to their delivery times... My package arrived here in Omaha yesterday, but it's not "scheduled for delivery" until tomorrow, so apparently it's just going to sit there for an entire day and wait.

@animuson Uh, it's terrible on Apple product launch days - I can literally get in my car and drive to within 500 feet of where my new shiny thing is... but I can't get to it.

8:28 PM
Amazon isn't really pulling through on the whole Cyber Monday thing. The one deal I wanted they cancelled before it went live, so now I'm just peeved.

Wow, people still write like this? stackoverflow.com/posts/20337145/revisions

Speaking of Omaha. I had the weirdest dream that I was passing through Nebraska for some reason. And I stopped and had dinner at @animuson's house. I think I'm spending too much time on this website.

I know, right @Undo. I think I'll roll it back.

@Bart prepares edit war hammer

Why did I read that as "Speaking of Obama" @jadarnel27?

8:30 PM
Everyone passes through Omaha to get to the places they actually want to go.

I once had a dream that I was answering something on SO, and when I posted it it ended up as a question. Then I went to go complain on Meta for some reason, and the meta link was gone. In fact, the top bar wasn't there. It was like it was shredded into five little pieces scattered randomly throughout the website.
Then Clippycorn showed up and said that if I was to ever get the bar back I would have to go on a quest and edit all the grammar errors on the site.
And then I woke up.
Who wants to bet that someone has a big long mSO post prepared for the moment the queue hits 100k?

I do. I just have to determine the right amount of E-s for the title's EEEEK. I was thinking about 100k, but that might be a problem.

@Bart I vote something like Eeeeee100k!

I hope that's serious enough though. You wouldn't want people to think I'm making fun of such a serious situation. Maybe I'll add a

We could just remove 999 out of every 1000 items, that would make it more manageable :)

8:45 PM
At the 5 year point we should have really just deleted everything on the site and started over again. Just to do everything right from then on.

Except the stuff worth keeping, of course. We could set up a review queue only for users with less than 20 reputation to make that decision.
Whoa, the CV queue just went down!
99,327 > 99,326

The stuff worth keeping we could have migrated to Experts Exchange.

Reminds me of something in one of the Meta Holiday Yuletide thingys: If I were Jeff Atwood, I would do my part,\ Nuke the whole four million, and then hit restart.
Of course, now it's six million :P
I wonder how long it would take to DROP everything.
You know what we need? We need all the SO mods to go on a weekend close vote nuking binge - and whichever one handles the most gets a mug or something.

They tried that once. Somehow Jon Skeet still won.

That's discouraging.
We should give Jon a diamond and 10 rep points (non-capped) for every post he reviews.

9:23 PM
Beat my game. To the flags queue!
Dun dun dundun!

9:46 PM
@Undo From where I'm looking, the Close Vote queue is at 99,261. So it has...continued to drop?!

9:58 PM
What kind of madness is this?

Brown-ness

Ah. Even better than madness.

/me will write a Meta posted titled "Might brown be the solution to the Close Vote queue size?"

A: The Many Memes of Meta

animusonMeme: Brown Originator: jadarnel27, in chat (more) Cultural Height: TBD Background: Brown. It's the answer to everything. Because brown. Usage: Brown.

That's it, I want snark credit as a feature. A certain amount of snark you can use throughout the year to unleash your inner snarkishness on unsuspecting (possibly innocent) users.
Hahaha @animuson. Can't believe that wasn't in there already

10:12 PM
I thought it was, but my Ctrl+F skills returned nothing. :(

@animuson Brown
Add to the room tags please.

No need @JohannesKuhn. We need to be informed of all those tags you currently see. But brown is implied. You can't tell me when you visited this room for the first time that "brown" wasn't the first thing you thought about.

10:28 PM
@animuson Random question (if you have any idea) - It seems like many problems can be solved / alleviated by getting more moderators. Is there any reason we don't?

What problems?

Well, for one thing, the close vote queue - if we have a few users who can 1-shot close questions, don't have the 40 daily cap and are more dedicated to that specifically, that could certainly help.
And I've seen many answers by moderators mentioning the high number of flags - is it just that there are so many incoming flags, or is there actually a backlog?
And if we have a few mods sitting on the new questions, closing the inappropriate ones, that should certainly, in the long term, improve the overall question quality and reduce the number of questions that need to be closed

The close vote queue isn't something that moderators really occupy themselves with though, is it? (Well except for one moderator and his antics)

10:44 PM
@Bart That's possibly part of the problem (only seeing one of the moderators in the top reviewers list can certainly be demotivating).

Generally the queue builds up with stuff that needs to be declined, and then when someone gets in a mood to go on a decline spree it'll empty out. Like those pesky not constructive comment flags...
