Alien Language and Useage

Proposed Q&A site for alien from other planets or earthmen who interested in languages in extraterrestrial civilizations

Currently in definition.

@jadarnel27 The justification wasn't "the mods find it funny", the justification was "they're fine with it"

4:05 AM
@jadarnel27 Usually there's a comment redirecting to SO
or whatever
@jadarnel27 No, i'm not taking it personally. :)
@jadarnel27 If you see the comments below meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/19478/the-many-memes-of-meta/…, RH has given some pretty good justifications, IMO

Java users don't seem to like empiricism as much as python users.

5:35 AM
Are there any SE mods around?
Oh, never mind.

@Mahnax Here I am
chem.SE mod
(or did you want an SO mod?)
Or do you want me to summon a <site> mod?

7:18 AM
@Mahnax I'm disappearing now, feel free to ping me if you want
Otherwise, try

Anyone know if chat oneboxing for comments has been disabled again?
@balpha maybe?

It's the query string behind the comment URL
You have to get rid of it because currently chat doesn't recognise it properly

@TimYiJiang Which "query string"?
http://superuser.com/questions/441195/is-linux-able-to-supply-phantom-power/#comment510629_441201

No, it is not right. Please remain calm while our local Stack Exchange Badge Inquisition Team gets to your house and revokes your Disciplined badge, then immediately reinstates it because you made the effort to post this question. — Frédéric Hamidi 42 mins ago
That should work I think?

see? :P
Oh, it seems it's just that question
Now that's weird!

superuser.com/questions/441195/…
The first one works, the second one doesn't

@slhck where did you get that second link from?

11:36 AM
@balpha I right-clicked the timestamp next to the comment and copied its URL
It's not a question of whether it's recommended. It depends on what hardware capabilities there are. If there's a hardware switch, you can't override it in software. — slhck 26 mins ago
Weird.. now it works again?!
I don't know where the trailing slash came from originally.
Obviously, it's enough if your window location has the trailing slash already, because the anchor will just be appended and then break oneboxing @balpha

sure, but the question is, where does the trailing slash come from? I can't think of a place where we would add that

@balpha Me neither, but I did have it in my URL bar and I surely didn't manually change it in any way
I'll keep looking into it and see if I can ever reproduce this

@TimYiJiang the query string issue is fixed

12:20 PM
@ManishEarthwantsmorewaffles I don't see any good justification under there, just anecdotal evidence from Robert's experience. Just last week I saw the opposite, where the OP got offended by the whole thing and made a rude comment in response.

12:56 PM
Oh yeah, I'm supposed to...go to work. Whoops.
The things you can forget...In other news, my hatred of Java continues to grow.
> Hi Tim. It's been a great year together.
Alright My Coke Rewards, I think you're getting a little too chummy there.

Hahah

1:29 PM
@jadarnel i think I know which one you're talking about. RH told me the user had been qbanned.

If the user is qbanned, we don't need to care about being nice. If not, the user will probably be amused (and the go to SO comments will point him/her in the right direction). Only issue is, it _can_ be a bad example. Not to others (the post will get deleted soon anyway), but to the OP.

@ManishEarthwantsmorewaffles "RH told me the user had been qbanned." - I assume the user admitted this to Robert, then. Regardless, you can't know that beforehand. That's my point. You are needlessly being rude to someone who may just be confused.
@ManishEarthwantsmorewaffles The programming questions are dealt with so quickly (downvoted off the front page, closed, deleted), I don't see why there's a need to make a spectacle of them with comic strips.

1:46 PM
ok.... WHAT is going on with this post?? I have never seen so many votes in such little time...

A: Is Stack Overflow down?

Robert CartainoThe IT folks are aware of the situation and are working on it now.

@Lix Haha, I know, it's going nuts.

@Lix Because every single one of those error pages contain a link to Meta
So it basically drove all of SO's traffic onto MSO
And they all found this question.

Lix
insane...

(Live update doesn't work for me, so I can't see the magic)

also, 3k meta folk are being assiduous in closing any others as dupes, so that one's getting all the votes

Lix
1:48 PM
dupe? dupe? someone say dupe? (* eager beaver *)

At this rate in a few minutes the question will get the great question badge

@TimYiJiang It looks really spastic because people keep going back and forth on their votes.

And a few more and the answer will get great answer

Ha, like the guy got when election notification thing happened.

ahhh we're back up

1:50 PM
Yup. Now close ALL the trash that has accumulated on SO over the last half hour

@jad probably not admitted--RH may have seen the number of deleted qs on his profile. Btw, its not to "make a soectacle". It's just to liven up these otherwise boring posts for their short lifespans.

@ManishEarthwantsmorewaffles Oh, so it was still Robert's (admittedly very experienced) guess that the asker was question-banned.
Also, I would consided "livening up" something that needs to be immediately thrown in the trash "making a spectacle" of it.

Anyone know the status/timeframe around this request: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/62591/…

Bah. I meant "consider", not consided (which is, apparently, not a word)

(This is the request to warn when automatically creating a new tag...)

2:02 PM
@DavidManheim I don't think there is any way for us mortal users to know, unfortunately. You could bounty that question and you might get a response from an SE employee as far as the status.
(or I guess you could just a ping a dev in here, and they could answer if they feel like it)

Lix
Now its just turning into noise... someone should shut it down...

It's OK Marc, I spun the Wheel and it said it was Nick's fault...so blame successfully diverted!

2:22 PM
@balpha did anybody confirm what browser this was?
@slhck What browser do you use?

Q: Automatically send a vouchercode after payment with paypal

PineapplecupcakeI'm kinda new to Stackoverflow, but I've checked the website before asking this question! Here it goes: I've won 400+ vouchers (worth 5 euro's each) for dutch webshop (a pretty big one). They can't be combined so they are pretty useless to me but still they are worth over 2000 euros. Then i've ...

Wow o_O
Also, I imagine that's not legal. Most gift card type things like that say "not for resale" or "non-transferable" on them, I thought.

@TimYiJiang bug report
on the chat userscript, I want to tell you before I refresh my window
in case you want me to probe anything (if it can be seen)
when chrome loads with many tabs here, the chat userscript loads (I have keyboard navigation) but the "selection highlight" on chat messages does not appear when I keyboard navigate

Sorry, I wasn't responsible for the keyboard part of the script
I think you have to /blame @RebeccaChernoff or @TimStone :P

Hey @TimStone, how's that Data Explorer nonsense going? Particularly this little guy =)

2:30 PM
Didn't know if you thought you might want to investigate.
This is a recurring thing, and the only repro steps for me are "first time I boot my computer" + I'm up to date with /update
@jadarnel27 Euro legalities, we would have to see such a card

@jcolebrand Just idle speculation on my part =)
I looked on a (US) gift card I have in my wallet, and it actually says no such thing. So I'm probably wrong in general haha.

@jadarnel27 no, I've seen stuff like that. You can't generally commercially resell already activated gift cards. I could be entirely wrong tho.
> Nonreturnable; not for resale. Notwithstanding anything contained in these Terms and Conditions, Walmart plastic Gift Cards and eGift Cards ("Gift Cards") are not returnable or refundable for cash except in states where required by law. Resale of Walmart Gift Cards is strictly prohibited.

@jcolebrand Ok, well I feel slightly less crazy now. I knew I had seen that somewhere!
Nice comment on that post, by the way. Very helpful.

and on top of that, I can't imagine that dutch webshop (a pretty big one) wouldn't have a similar legal binding.

@jcolebrand Chrome Dev on OS X.

3:19 PM
In news that's completely unrelated to any of this (and mostly uninteresting to other human beings), I got to meet Stan Lee yesterday.

Nice

> we have a lot of remote employees in different states. Our sales tax burden for selling tangible goods started to become an administration nightmare
This seems rather odd. Does this means that SE Inc. actually has to comply with sales tax regulation in every state that it has an employee in?

@jadarnel27 That's been done forever, but no one's deployed it...I need to kind of figure out what's going on there, as far as who's responsible for what now, so I'm not sure...but I'll find out this week and hopefully at least get that taken care of.
@jcolebrand And there's no errors or anything?

@TimStone Ah, yes. That's really what I was wondering about. Thanks for looking into it!

@TimStone nope

3:35 PM
@jadarnel27 Yeah. I had been meaning to look into it, but since I have so many things up in the air I had thought maybe it made more sense to finish those first...but obviously that hasn't fully happened yet, so. :P
@jcolebrand Hmm...if it happens again can you see if the class gets applied? I guess it's possible that the CSS isn't getting injected into the page properly or something, but I can't think of why that'd be the case.
Should be .easy-navigation-selected on the .message

3:50 PM
@TimStone which class where?
oh, ok
so I should look for the injection of a style element as well?

@TimStone No worries =) I just figured I'd remind you now that the election chaos was over.

A: What happened to "What's your best programming joke?"?

randomSenile grandparents who constantly soil themselves need to be put out of their misery sooner or later. Sure, they're a member of the family and fought damn well hard to earn their place once upon a time. But that time is long gone now and it's a different world today. A cleaner, more just wor...

That is pure genius. claps

@jcolebrand Yeah, should be the last thing in <head> with ID user-style

It's terrible news for SE.... I had Stack Exchange's email notifications going to my Facebook address for a while. They were all flagged as spam.

Anonymous
(I don't generally use that address, but some user had asked about the possibility of Facebook notifications for SE and I wanted to see if this was a practical approach.)

A: Issue with calling events in mobile browsers

Joe AntonettiI figured out the issue. I wrote "touchdown" instead of "touchstart"

And it's not even football season yet.
