@It'sOver prot what?
@djsmiley2kTMW too many RO's, so none is around when we need them... Murphy's law #21

Pro Tractor:
Truck and tractor pulling, also known as power pulling, is a motorsport competition, popular in the United States, Canada, Europe (especially in the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark and Germany), Australia, Brazil and New Zealand, which requires modified tractors to pull a heavy sled along an 11-metre (35 ft) wide, 100-metre (330 ft) long track, with the winner being the tractor that pulls the sled the farthest. The sport is known as the world's most powerful motorsport, due to the multi-engined modified tractor pullers. All tractors in their respective classes pull a set weight in the sled. When...

Sounds like a reactor.
Hopefully not atomic.

@Shadow9 nuclear :P "atomic bomb" was a terrible misnomer

Other question, wtf is up with those answers

7:45 AM
@Mithical . "We don't do that here". It might make new users left out of the joke. Very unwelcoming.

@Mithical Because at the time it was asked, the kbd element was significantly worse (e.g. it had no vertical line padding). Today, however, most of the original problems with it have been fixed (it has vertical padding, for instance), and it's no longer as intrusive compared to what it used to look like.

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog so then it comes down to whether questions should be closed or not

@SonictheAnonymousHedgehog Yeah. That's why it's tagged .

@Mithical hm?
I assume you pinged the wrong person

7:54 AM
@Magisch sorry, page jump

I don't remember what my thought was at the time I voted. Either I failed to notice the tag, or noticed it but saw that it was added in 2009 when the 2011 crawl was still intrusive.
It was probably this new edit that indirectly resulted in the post getting kicked into close review.
Also, a quick note: the post has been through reopen review twice since the recent closure, and both times emerged with a Leave Closed consensus.

@Stevoisiak I am not really sure I like being told that I am difficult to deal with and that that somehow related to the fact "I happen to be a developer"
It seems too close to "It is difficult to tell developers that the fingerprinting ads are just doing fraud detection"

@BlueSoul i saw that as, we're difficult to deal with because we support and identify with the ideal of stack exchange, not the business goals of the company
so you have someone who is clearly identifying with what you're doing but not with your priorities

We agree with their stated goal, not their actual goal.

not their goal, the ideal behind which the site was (seen to be) founded
the motivation that drives most power users is similar to users of wikipedia: the proliferation and availability of free high quality knowledge to everyone
the company is a VC funded tech startup with 2 overriding goals: 1) growth and 2) revenue
nothing else

9:17 AM
So community to many is numbers and future customers
Community to us is... Well šŸ˜

JAD
@Magisch or, in other words: 1) long-term revenue, 2) short-term revenue. Probably in opposite order in terms of priority

@JAD if you look at today's vc world, there are only two extremes
growth > revenue, because these VCs want the next amazon for developers and not anything less ambitious

JAD
run at a loss now to grow fast
or cash now while you can
you mean that?

making money isn't enough, you need to make billions and billions and control an entire market. The valuations were based on that and the VC firms need that to shore up their returns
the more you look into it the more the entire market looks like a huge confidence trick scheme. You grow and grow at a loss with some nebulous idea of future profitability until someone buys you out or you IPO at greatly inflated prices.

JAD
@Magisch I also think it's a side-effect of the global nature of the internet. "The winner takes all" is a phrase that's uttered quite a lot in my workplace, and they're not wrong
@Magisch sounds like the dotcom bubble all over again

9:21 AM
i mean just look at what wework did
a rental company posing as a tech company, super unprofitable, highly leveraged with tons of risks, bam 25x higher valuation then would be reasonable
or the ice tea company that put blockchain in its name and tripled its value
the entire startup culture is poisoned. Some good things come out of it but it looks like most of it is just cruft upon cruft

JAD
9:37 AM
Not sure if that's necessarily limited to startups

the bottom line is that our (the communities) and the company's aims are at best orthogonal
which is kinda sad but not unexpected.

10:33 AM
@Magisch I never understood this oppression with growth, but I have nothing to do with businesses

@AndrasDeak I posit a simple question
why would you want a steady 100.000 profit when you could have 100.000.000 or even more?
if you don't factor in that you can't simply create value out of thin air then it's easy to answer

@Magisch yes, but I tend to factor in that I can't simply create value out of thin air...
short of a Ponzi scheme, which is exactly what you are saying

I mean the entire concepts of overvalued buyouts or IPOs centers around not being the last one to hold what you have made
the initial investors in wework didn't really think they were gonna make a profitable company. They thought they were gonna make something that sells to the public market for an absolute crapton

@Magisch you can't?
^ try this one, could work.....

hmmm
i have a programming issue I could post on so...
but what's the likelyhood someone will tell me I'm doing it wrong?
I'm not a programmer.

@BlueSoul never heard of toka kokan?
@djsmiley2kTMW depends, are you using jQuery?

@JAD lol no.

Must remember to not post from Azure VM.
there, cleaned up version:
@JAD also... check this.
the circle is the one used by Ed and Al in Fullmetal Alchemist in their attempt to resurrect their mother. The attempt goes very wrong.

@djsmiley2kTMW if you actually are, the right way might be useful

At the time Edward believed that the cost of an human being was just the cost of its components.
> ā€œWater: 35 liters, Carbon: 20 kg, Ammonia: 4 liters, Lime:1.5 kg, Phosphrus: 800 g, salt: 250g, saltpeter:100g, Sulfer: 80g, Fluorine: 7.5 g, iron: 5.6 g, Silicon: 3g, and 15 other elements in small quantities.... thats the total chemical makeup of the average adult body. Modern science knows all of this, but there has never been a single example of succesful human trasmutation. It's like there's some missing ingredient..... Scientists have been trying to find it for hundreds of years, pouring tons of money into research, and to this day they don't have a theory.

@BlueSoul I... am aware. I seen both series multiple times

@BlueSoul well, they became pretty bad-ass. Silver linings and all that ;)

@AndrasDeak python
problem being there is already answers to simular questions, that if I understood enough, I could likely use
but I don't understand enough

1:51 PM
@djsmiley2kTMW you can ask in the python room on chat.SO if you prepare an MCVE or otherwise formulate the question clearly
Read sopython.com/chatroom and sopython.com/wiki/… and you'll be fine

2:11 PM
I think I've sorted it now by asking helpful people on IRC :D

2:41 PM
@GeorgeStocker I wondered, when will Shog's GoFundMe be closed? You never gave any timeframe (not that it was necessary), so I got curious as to when you wanted to end it.

3:08 PM
@Laf-ReinstateMonica Don't know, really.

@Shadow9 It was rolled back because they were never a mod.
They're just a normal user saying they're going to stop using the site.

send help, my touchpad has crashed

Well, if you're operating it with a sledge ...

hmmm rebooting hasn't fixed it, oh dear
the mouse cursor has now just disappeared altogethered
now it's back, but jumping around lke a crazy thing D:
yey it's fixed
cleaning it didn't work, until i kept my hand on it long enough for it to dry :O

5:51 PM
I noticed that sometimes with my laptop as well. Totally arbitraey, usually hard rebootng helped to bring it back (using an Acer laptop).

this is an asus.

This is a certain small city in Greece.

6:59 PM
@djsmiley2kTMW my whole laptop crashed, or at least the bits that were responsible for showing stuff on display.

@rene I once managed to crash my laptop display by falling in it while drunk. Intersting color and moirè effects though :D

On your face?
the color effects I mean ;D

No, just the laptop's display.

Shame :D

7:08 PM
I used it to shore up my fall.

lol

Interestingly after buying a new laptop I gave that broken one to a friend (who was resquesting for it), and he completely repaired it at a fairly low cost installing a new display.

@djsmiley2kTMW I have a function in my .bashrc for if/when that happens
fix_touchpad () {
  sudo modprobe -r psmouse;
  sudo modprobe psmouse;
}

I have 'fix_screens' or fix_desktops' I can't remember which haha

I like to get 30 days of uptime out of my laptop at a boot, so anything I can tweak to extend my uptime after 2 weeks is an improvement. If only I could figure out an equivalent for my wifi router modem?.
The last two meetups I have attended I've had to manually input the SSID and manually select the security settings...

8:36 PM
It's hard to have a shog free happy hour

meh

I take your melancholy response as agreement

30 days of uptime! Wouldnā€™t that be nice. Ever since I updated to a Windows 10 laptop, I canā€™t get more than 2 days worth of uptime without a forced restart for installing updates.
It was driving me crazy until I discovered the bandwidth throttling hack to prevent updates from being downloaded on the first place.

weird
we don't get bothered with updates here very often
i keep my work pc up for weeks at a time

8:51 PM
With Win 10? Cannot repro. Every machine Iā€™ve ever had running Win 10 wanted to update itself and restart every few days.

@CodyGray I call bs, but sure.
At least, not forced windows updates.

We have a bank of laptops set up for live demos of our products, and ever since I updated those to Win 10, I see theyā€™ve restarted themselves the very next time I go look at them, which is only a few days later
@djsmiley2kTMW I would love nothing more than to figure out how to make this stop

do all the updates in one go
boom, done
for at LEAST a week

A week isnā€™t very long. I expect months of uptime

IT manages when updates are pushed out
i imagine that has a lot to do with it

8:54 PM
I donā€™t have an it department

@CodyGray haha you're running windows.
I expect my car to go 0 to 60 in 0.001sec

my home PC, it never nags me

@user400654 nod

but it offers to update when i decide to shut it down or restart it

@djsmiley2kTMW Iā€™ve had easily 6 months of uptime on Windows 7

8:55 PM
i have a win10 laptop me and the misses uses
generally I guess maybe once a month it asks about updates

What the heck. My company is cheap and my laptop runs Win 10 Home, so I thought that might be the problem. But Iā€™ve sat down and ensured all available updates are installed. Then, maybe a week later, it has more and is insisting on a reboot

there's weekly update patches
tuesday is patch day
and lately, there's been a lot of BAD exploits
so I'd expect your IT team to push them out 'right now'

Did I mention we donā€™t have an IT team? Itā€™s just me

So you're blocking updates directly from microsoft, which could put your company at risk?
that's..... not clever.

Hah
Put a company at risk where most computers other than mine are running XP or 7
Yeah. This is not the biggest problem

8:58 PM
RUnning windows for months at a time, isn't clever either unless you're on the server versions
Sure it's not
but the complaint is bs. :D

Win10 does indeed push updates on you and insists to install critical patches after 14 days or so.

Sorry for calling you out on it, I know how everyone loves to go "wah windows 10 updates so bad wah!"

Why would that server versions get different?

Fact is, it's far far far better than the old ways

@djsmiley2kTMW Iā€™m serious as a heart attack here. This is literally breaking my productivity and irritating the heck out of me

9:00 PM
because the server versions generally aren't running as much crap, and I guess MS expects them to be ran by people who read the patch notes and go "yup, we need to reboot for this".

It isnā€™t better than any old ways. The user deserves a choice

No.
Not when the user is negiglent.
/me can't spell.

If you canā€™t figure out how to patch your system without rebooting it, I donā€™t need your patches
Iā€™ll find other ways of protecting the system

@CodyGray Since I started taking classes at CUNY my uptime has gone way down. I think it's because they have wifi everywhere and my laptop tries to connect to every one with the right name... when the wifi goes really bad it won't connect to routers it knows until I reboot.

It isnt up to you as a vendor to decide whether a user is ā€œnegligentā€
@AaronHall Thatā€™s not a bug Iā€™ve ever experienced even on large university networks.

9:04 PM
@CodyGray go to settings > Update & Security > Advanced Settings: Tweak these settings: i.stack.imgur.com/bKbuI.png

Having full control of my system is why I use Linux. Except now I have to know how the Network Manager or whatever it's called interfaces with the GUI, and figure out how to restart it...

Why are people OK with being forced to reboot every 30 days?

Don't make me go find the Group Policy to disable that completely ...

I don't like that either, but it's better than Windows...

@rene Doesnā€™t exist/work on Home, but I found a workaround

9:07 PM
You installed Ubuntu?

For me at least, reboots are extremely disruptive. I have everything positioned, arranged, opened, saved, and whatever just so. I hate starting over. It drains my productivity significantly.

meh
i have my fav tabs pinned, my apps i always start in startup,and they open where i want them automagically every time

@rene I prefer Mint. Ubuntu's default interface is abhorrent, and Iā€™m too lazy to figure out how to install Cinnamon with Ubuntu. But no, I found a workaround with Windows, because I canā€™t run the programs I need on Linux
None of the settings I care about seem to save

i deliberately reboot my work pc at the end of the week
/me shrugs

i prefer to shut it down on friday, but, often i'm lazy

9:17 PM
@CodyGray I suspect there are window managers or extensions that remember your stuff

I wish I had eternities of time to try them out...

1 hour later…
Rob
10:31 PM
@CodyGray Saving Desktop window positions: Linux and Windows.

10:58 PM
@Rob Haha. Sigh. The Windows Q&A doesn't have any good answers. Yeah, I could write a PowerShell script to move the window to the position that I want it, but that position changes over time as I do more stuff, so I don't want to have to keep writing a new script.

Rob
11:13 PM
There are other Q&As, and asking your own (with specific requirements) may result in a great answer.

11:55 PM
@AaronHall heh. Let me count the ways . /etc/network/interfaces , network manager, netplan, DHCP client....
(I might have had a unfun experience with this on a personal project)
