@Mithical fun. "We don't do that here". It might make new users left out of the joke. Very unwelcoming.

@Mithical Because at the time it was asked, the kbd element was significantly worse (e.g. it had no vertical line padding). Today, however, most of the original problems with it have been fixed (it has vertical padding, for instance), and it's no longer as intrusive compared to what it used to look like.

I don't remember what my thought was at the time I voted. Either I failed to notice the tag, or noticed it but saw that it was added in 2009 when the 2011 crawl was still intrusive.

It was probably this new edit that indirectly resulted in the post getting kicked into close review.

Also, a quick note: the post has been through reopen review twice since the recent closure, and both times emerged with a Leave Closed consensus.

@Stevoisiak I am not really sure I like being told that I am difficult to deal with and that that somehow related to the fact "I happen to be a developer"

It seems too close to "It is difficult to tell developers that the fingerprinting ads are just doing fraud detection"

@BlueSoul i saw that as, we're difficult to deal with because we support and identify with the ideal of stack exchange, not the business goals of the company

so you have someone who is clearly identifying with what you're doing but not with your priorities

We agree with their stated goal, not their actual goal.

not their goal, the ideal behind which the site was (seen to be) founded

the motivation that drives most power users is similar to users of wikipedia: the proliferation and availability of free high quality knowledge to everyone

the company is a VC funded tech startup with 2 overriding goals: 1) growth and 2) revenue

@Magisch or, in other words: 1) long-term revenue, 2) short-term revenue. Probably in opposite order in terms of priority

@JAD if you look at today's vc world, there are only two extremes

growth > revenue, because these VCs want the next amazon for developers and not anything less ambitious

making money isn't enough, you need to make billions and billions and control an entire market. The valuations were based on that and the VC firms need that to shore up their returns

the more you look into it the more the entire market looks like a huge confidence trick scheme. You grow and grow at a loss with some nebulous idea of future profitability until someone buys you out or you IPO at greatly inflated prices.

@Magisch I also think it's a side-effect of the global nature of the internet. "The winner takes all" is a phrase that's uttered quite a lot in my workplace, and they're not wrong

i mean just look at what wework did

a rental company posing as a tech company, super unprofitable, highly leveraged with tons of risks, bam 25x higher valuation then would be reasonable

or the ice tea company that put blockchain in its name and tripled its value

the entire startup culture is poisoned. Some good things come out of it but it looks like most of it is just cruft upon cruft

the bottom line is that our (the communities) and the company's aims are at best orthogonal

which is kinda sad but not unexpected.

why would you want a steady 100.000 profit when you could have 100.000.000 or even more?

if you don't factor in that you can't simply create value out of thin air then it's easy to answer
