XD I didn't realize it had a toilet...

6:38 PM
@Tinkeringbell Can confirm that that's a worldwide thing. I can see kids handling fireworks during Independence Day here in the U.S., and during Diwali in India

@SonictheK-DayHedgehog Do you like fireworks?

The Indian ones are more dangerous, because there are fewer regulations on what chemicals can be used than on the American ones, so it's typical to see at least a few kids injured there. On the other hand, if an American kid gets injured, it's rare enough that it ends up on the local news.
@Ollie Yep, we do sparklers every Diwali, and I live close enough to an Independence Day fireworks launch site such that I can watch those from my own backyard

> Fireworks were involved in an estimated 9,100 injuries treated in U.S. hospital emergency departments during calendar year 2018.

that's an absurd number, lets ban fireworks!

That's a low number when you compare the overall users

6:45 PM
I think user is going for a bit of Dutch rhetorics ;)

@Sonic Out here, no one does fireworks...so I've been concocting my own out of powdered sugar ;)

mostly being facetious, considering our number of daily covid cases, paired with people pushing against masks

@Ollie The intelligence agencies will want to know your recipe :)

And potassium nitrate. A few questionable other ingredients. They're basically rocket engines.
@SonictheK-DayHedgehog They'll only know if you tell them ;)

> A total of 168 people injured one or both their eyes with fireworks this New Year's, around 30 more than the previous New Year's, according to the Dutch ophthalmic society NOG. 13 people blinded an eye, and five completely lost an eye, NOS reports

The number of patients with eye damaged caused by fireworks has been increasing since 2017, according to NOG. The majority, 65 percent, of victims were injured by legal fireworks. Almost half of the victims were injured by fireworks lit by someone else.

6:47 PM
I used to know a guy who hated fireworks...but he lived next door to a guy who loved 'em.
They didn't get along ;)
So

IMO injuries are increasing because parents arent letting their kids play with fireworks earlier
or generally do anything risky earlier, :p

@user400654 Fireworks are not toys to be played with.

Every July 4th, he'd get a large, galvanized steel bin, fill it with a possibly illegal amount of fireworks, light it an' run.
After placing the bin carefully on the edge of the property...

Perhaps. I think it's also because they're forbidding so many fireworks here that people are getting illegal stuff instead, which is unsafer than the things that were banned...

6:49 PM
most occations we just lit and threw bottle rockets for a few hours
younger ones would light them on pipes

A question:
When you're suspended, are you suspended on the site's Meta?

Ah.

but i haven't really messed with fireworks in... probably 10 years now

(I think! I don't know how it's like for the sites that have 1 rep meta participation, but being set back to 1 would effectively ban you from most meta places anyway).

6:50 PM
@🚽 Then you're overdue.

I was once at a bonfire night in London many years ago. All the fireworks were laid on the kitchen counter ready to be taken outside and lit. Some idiot left the back door open and a rocket came into the kitchen. We were very lucky that nobody was injured ...

@Tinkeringbell Well don't try it on me!

i take that back, family came over few years ago with a box full of bottle rockets to "dispose of"

"Wait a minute. I just lit a rocket. Rockets explode!" - Woody

@Ollie Awww. I just had my labcoat on!

6:52 PM
Save me from chickens in labcoats.
;)

but we have a large backyard to do it in, so all the mess stays in our property
well, except for the noise

@Tinkeringbell What worries me most was that when I lived in NL the older youths would set off fireworks in the street. Followed by much younger kids who would and pick up the ones that appeared to have failed and not gone off (which could of course go off when they were picked up). And not an adult in sight to supervise the little kids ...

yeah... that was basically commonplace growing up

@DavidPostill Ah yes, there have been a lot of campaigns against that. I don't think it happens anymore... A big part of those when I was growing up was focusing on 'strijkers' and indeed never lighting the same fuse twice!
Most of it these days seem to be people combining several illegal fireworks into one to make a bigger boom.

@Tinkeringbell Yeah well, that's even more stupid ...

6:55 PM
idunno. there's just something exciting about holding a lit rocket in your hand then throwing it, and watching it go in a random direction

@user400654 And when it hits someone in the face? Is that still exciting?

hasn't happend to us yet
so idunno

Don't jinx it.

@user400654 statistics say it will eventually ...

most of the time the direction is down range, it's pretty rare for it to come back
it's like throwing a nose-weighted dart

6:58 PM
@user400654 It only takes 1 rocket to blind someone ...

@DavidPostill Yes, that's why you use goggles.

just don't look at oncoming rockets

@Ollie Has anyone else said they are using goggles? No!

I'm using goggles!

i don't, but most of my family wears glasses, so,

6:59 PM
@DavidPostill I never said the people getting hurt were smart. They are either not handling the fireworks safely, are handling illegal fireworks, or are 'innocent' bystanders that 'accidentally' didn't notice the drunk neighbor was lighting up illegal fireworks...

^
most of us have been doin this since we were teens, it's not like we don't know what we're doin

@user400654 Does it say throw the rocket on the instructions? I'll bet it doesn't.

it does not

Note that I know 2 people who have lost an eye through fireworks. That's why I'm trying to educate y'all.

@DavidPostill Safety glasses! 'vuurwerkbrillen' are a thing now and like 'aansteeklonten', they're a mandatory thing to buy with your fireworks at the shop we use :D

7:04 PM
@Tinkeringbell Yeah, but is it mandatory to wear them. Do the politie fine people not wearing them?

my concern is usually more with my hearing, if you get a bad rocket that dislodges from the guide stick, that things gonna hit the ground

@DavidPostill Sadly, no. But then again the police here doesn't do anything really, not even fine people violating corona guidelines by throwing a 300 people party.

> A total of 168 people saw a specialist after a firework-related injury during the recent New Year celebrations, and 13 people have ended up blind in one eye, according to figures from the Dutch eye specialist association NOG.

Almost half the victims were injured by firework set off by someone else and 65% were hit by legal fireworks.

fortunately we don't stand on opposite sides of the yard and throw rockets at each other anymore

That was jan 2020

7:07 PM
Sure. So that's why you wear your vuurwerkbril or stay inside when the neighbor is messing with fireworks!

@Tinkeringbell Let's see what happens 01.01.2021 ...

A spike in COVID cases, probably.

nah, that's gonna go away on nov4th

Drunk people going outside to hug, kiss, and ignore social distancing.

Cigarette smoke is known to spread COVID; perhaps fireworks smoke may do the same

7:09 PM
@user400654 Really.

@SonictheK-DayHedgehog I really really hope not because that smoke and the stench always get into the house no matter how closed I keep my window.
I don't need the neighbors dose of covid along with it.

are we discussing the vuurwerk lockdown?

I'll be going now

that smell is partly why i stopped messing with fireworks.. can't stand it

Ta!
@user400654 Try burnouts.

7:11 PM
it gets in your cloths, hair, shoes, everything

Anyone seen this error before: meta.stackexchange.com/q/355965/158100 ?

@rene Yeah... I'm sorry. I started it by pointing out it was kinda ridiculous to claim the 'vuurwerkslachtoffers' would put extra pressure on the healthcare while it's the covid cases that put on the extra pressure, the vuurwerkslachtoffers would just be regular...

true that

nope, never

So I don't like the politicians that are using that false argument to suddenly get people to feel it's much more reasonable to ban fireworks...

7:12 PM
though i haven't tried to create an account in... well, a decade

@Tinkeringbell yeah, I see some "interesting" moves by "The Hague"
@user400654 I have created one in 2019 I think but I wanted it to succeed so didn't mess with the url

@rene It's definitely interesting...

was gonna ask for clarification, but, the user doesn't have an acct to reply with

7:31 PM
@user400654 Could still ask, they might still register :)

Rob
It was just edited, and I created a new site profile a few days ago; so unless it's a completely new account the bug is new.

8:13 PM
@Tink what incentive would politicians have to ban fireworks?

@M.A.R. populism

getting something done
> see! we care!

8:29 PM
@Tinkeringbell but it won't notify the OP

@user400654 I just repro-ed that message. I left out the last char of the link that I received by email.

@M.A.R. same reasons that in some countries politicians ban abortions. Many people support it, so the politicians tap into this.
@rene so it's the email client fault.
Not much SE can do, and the message does explain the link should be correct.

Rob
Still, it's possible to buy fireworks on an Indian Reservation (in North America, YMMV in Israel and the Netherlands).

Hmm... One thing to check, try text only mode of the email, maybe SE sends wrong link there?

@Shadow10YearsWizard probably, yes.

8:34 PM
@Rob buying isn't the issue, using them is.
@user400654 like sand on a beach... 🏖

Rob
@Shadow10YearsWizard Whatever to do?

@rene you're going to post answer?

@Shadow10YearsWizard I'm looking at the text version now. I'm not ready to comment or write an answer

@Rob keep your legs clean?
@rene even if you can't find the bug itself, worth posting the way to reproduce, will save 6-8 minutes for the dev if/when they'll come to fix it.

Rob
@Shadow10YearsWizard If you run quickly enough the caged monkeys won't hit your legs.

8:47 PM
found it, posting an answer

Rob
🎉

@Rob smell will still stick.
@rene incoming upvotes!
